2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 14 June, 2023 WIN, WIN, WIN with TWT! Too small to be homeless Mimi pussycat was recently rescued from a col- ony in outer western Sydney and is being cared for by the team at Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals on the corner of Victoria Road and Cowell Street. Mimi got her name from Rudlofo’s opera aria to Mimi and the line “your tiny hand is frozen”. “Our Mimi had a tiny frozen paw in the recent cold weather and she needs a home because she is too tiny, timid and tame to live in a colony,’’ the team at the World League said. “She is a small and cute cat who enjoys head rubs and affection, though she is still a bit scared when you pick her up.” Mimi is desexed, microchipped vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed. To meet Mimi contact the World League on 9817 4892 or [email protected]. A little kitten who wouldn’t survive this winter in the wild is our Cat Of The Week. Father Martin’s Musings Justice for The Holy Land It’s a land that is holy and sacred for many Jewish, Islamic and Christian people. Some random observations that I learnt is that the school system here has been very effective in teaching most people to speak English and or Hebrew. As an Australian tourist not once was it a problem being understood. Another observation is that obesity was not a widespread problem as most people did not have access to heavily sugar saturated food, the diet was mainly fruit, cereals, eggs, yoghurt, fish and meat. Smoking was widespread in public spaces - mainly by men of all ages - but very few women smoked openly. There are strong border barriers with large walls between The West Bank, The Gaza Strip and the territories of Israel. Security surveillance seems to be a strong occupation especially for the many young men and women who are expected to do at least two years of national service. What I learnt is that territory possession between the Arab and Israeli people is complex, ambiguous and is a constant work in progress. The words of Saint Pope Paul VI who visited this sacred land in 1964 are worth remembering; “If you want peace in this world then you need to work for justice”. Fr. Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital Chaplain One of the immediate lessons I was given during my recent visit to this part of the world is not to call the place either Israel or Palestine but simply The Holy Land. Elderly women helped by 2023 Winter Appeal The Saint Vincent de Paul Society has launched its 2023 Winter Appeal with money raised to fund services for older women in crisis. The Winter Appeal is being supported by local Catholic churches and donations can also be made through the Vinnies website: www. donate.vinnies. org.au “For many older women who are relying on their pension as their only income, they’re at a severe disadvantage when competing against double income earners in the rental market,’’ the St Vincent de Paul Society website says. “If they dedicated their lives to raising children, women often have much less in superannuation or savings than men, so if anything goes wrong, they’ll have no financial safety net.” Support will also be given to older women who suffer elder abuse. “Sadly, this is likely to happen easily, when an adult child is the main carer for their elderly parent,’’ the website says. “Donate now and you’ll help make sure older wom- en in crisis have a safe place to sleep, food, clothing and a chance to rebuild their lives.” VIC TAGG from, Happy HealthyHarold Best regards Vic Tagg Chairman, Ryde Hunters Hill and Canada Bay Life Education Hi Boys and Girls, This week Harold will be taking the Life Education van to Putney Public School for the next two weeks. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 14 June, 2023 Hunters Hill Guest Column As our lives seem to become more and more fast paced, and our cities change around us to keep up with this pace, there is something rather wonderful to have spaces that are set aside for the “sacred”. To The POINT By Reverend Michael Armstrong “Sacred” of course can mean many things to different people, and can include many different spaces and places, but I am using it in terms of a spiritual place whose purpose from the outset was for us to connect with God and one another. All Saints’ Anglican Church in Hunters Hill has been such a space since 1888. It is not only a place where worship occurs each day, and where we celebrate the ups and downs of life, but a place where people come and sit, pray, chat with a friend, have their lunch, play with their children (or the dog) or simply walk about the grounds and the church while admiring the gardens and beautiful architecture. As our world changes, and as our communities become more and more built up, there is a need for such spaces to be maintained, not only for now, but for the future. The cost of maintaining such places is extraordinary and as a congregation it is beyond us to do so. We don’t receive funds from the government, nor from the Diocese – only what we raise ourselves. So the task of restoring All Saints’ Church is upon our shoulders, but we cannot do it alone. We are therefore appealing to our community to assist us to keep this sacred space. *** Restoration work has commenced on the South and East sandstone walls of All Saints’ Church which have been damaged by water and pollution over the last 130 years. The cost is approximately $150,000.00, which has already ben raised by the Parish, on top of a previous $400,000.00 to make the building water tight again. We need a further $150,000.00 to complete the West and North side of the walls of the church, and a further $175,000.00 to restore the famous Eastern Stained-Glass window. There are cost savings if we can do the West and North sides at the same time as the South and East, and so there is a sense of urgency. We also hope to commence the East window restoration in January when the master stain glassman is available. The window is currently buckling and is in danger of breaking. Refugee Week Refugee Week is an annual celebration of the diversity and culture that refugees bring to our community and a great opportunity to recognise their resilience and the significant contribution refugees have made, and continue to make, to Australia. As part of Refugee Week (18 to 24 June), our Council will be holding a Citizenship Ceremony at Town Hall. As Mayor it is a privilege for me to preside over these ceremonies and to receive pledges from members of our community in their final step to becoming an Australian. The ceremony will be held on Tuesday 20 June at 6:30pm. We welcome participants, their family and friends and the broader community to take part in the ceremony and in this year’s celebration of Refugee Week. Community Bushcare Our natural environment here in Hunters Hill is an integral part of our urban landscape, providing habitat for many of our native flora and fauna and is a wonderful space for our community to enjoy. Hunters Hill is incredibly fortunate to have bushcare volunteer groups who dedicate their time and effort to ensuring these areas are carefully managed and conserved. If you are interested in helping protect and enhance our urban bushland or would like to learn more about the bushcare program, visit www. huntershill.nsw.gov.au/bushcare-volunteers or email Michael on [email protected]. gov.au. All ages are welcome and no experience is required as Council will provide all of the training and tools you will need. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill The Waste Wise Festival of Sustainability is just around the corner – it’s on this Saturday. TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Stop blaming the NSW Govt Dear Sir, The Mayor of Hunter’s Hill, Zac Miles, would have us believe the Council is so strapped for funds it might have to delay scheduled roads and footpath maintenance in the municipality (TWT 7 June). This is the same Zac Miles who recently voted to give $1.73 million of ratepayer funds towards the build cost of a sports & recreation facility at Boronia Park after the Council had previously resolved not contribute a cent to the project. This is the same Zac Miles who voted to demolish the cottage at No.48 Gladesville Road that had been returning the Council around $20,000 per year in rental income. This is the same Zac Miles who heads a Council that has failed - for a month now - to repair the dangerous kerb damage at the corner of Tarban Street and Manning Road (see pic provided). Rather than blaming the State government for his purported financial problems the Mayor might do better to review his Council’s own performance. DAVID SALTER Hunter’s Hill

Men’s Health Week focuses on not just physical health, but also men’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. International Men’s Health Week is celebrated every year around the world in the middle of June. ☐ The four goals of International Men’s Health Week. ☐ Looking out for your mates is a key message of International Men’s Health Week. It also concentrates on the health challenges faced by men and includes events and advice to improve the physical, emotional and mental health of men and boys. Men’s Health Week is coordinated by the Centre for Male Health at Western Sydney University. “Our close connections with community and government organisations across Australia enable us to develop the kinds of networks and partnerships that bring together people who care about better health for men and boys,’’ the team at the Centre for Male Health said. “Men’s Health Week works on the understanding that the best people to improve men’s health in Australia are those who live, work and engage with men and boys in communities around the country.” The theme of Men’s Health Week 2023 is Healthy Habits. “It is about focusing on encouraging men and boys to build healthy habits by identifying small changes they can make that benefit their health and wellbeing,’’ the team said. Men’s Health Week was started in the United States by the US Congress in 1994 to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Since then, Men’s Health Week has gained traction, with organisations and community groups across the world celebrating the contributions men and boys make to our society. In Australia, Men’s Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men’s health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country each June. “Our approach celebrates the strengths of men, the contributions they make, and the important roles they play in society,” the team said.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. On arrival, officers from Ryde Police Area Com- mand found a 14-yearold boy suffering a stab wound at a nearby railway station. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Police allege the injured boy was involved in a fight with a group of teens at the park before fleeing to the railway station where he was allegedly stabbed by one of the teens. A crime scene was es- tablished at both locations and an investigation com- menced into the circum- stances surrounding the incident. Following inquiries, five boys were arrested at Cherrybrook Train Station a short time later and were taken to Ryde and Castle Hill Police Stations. The 15-year-old and 13-year-old boy were charged with affray and possessing a prohibit- ed drug. They were both granted conditional bail to appear before Surry Hills Children’s Court on Mon- day, June 26. Cannabis found in Boronia Park Police were conducting proactive patrols in the Hunters Hill area at about 11:30pm on Thursday, June 1 when they noticed a Silver Toyota Camry parked on the side of a road outside Boronia Park reserve. Police noticed one pas- senger on board in the driver seat. Police en- gaged in conversation with the male occupant who was situated in the front driver seat. During conversation with this male, police could smell the scent of can- nabis inside the vehicle. Police formed reason to search the vehicle where a clear resealable bag of Cannabis was alleged- ly located in a backpack Five teens have been charged over an alleged stabbing in Macquarie Park on the weekend. ☐ Wanted by NSW Police: Toplace Group managing director, Jean Nassif inside the vehicle. Police weighed the bag of Can- nabis totalling 4.3 grams. The male was issued with a Cannabis caution for the possession of a prohibited drug. Knife, prohibited weapon and tobacco products found A male was driving his black BMW - past the scene where Police were dealing with a stolen vehicle that had crashed on Belmore Street, Ryde - at such a slow speed, he almost came to a stop alongside a crashed sto- len vehicle. Police thought this was suspicious and as a result, followed him and pulled him over nearby and trough conversation, the man’s explanation for his behaviour raised further suspicion, resulting in a search of his vehicle. Police allegedly found 14 cartons of cigarettes, $5,000 in cash in denom- inations of $50 notes and numerous mobile phones inside the vehicle. A search of the man’s shoulder bag also allegedly located a knife with a blade measuring 16cm in length and an extendable baton. Assault Police and affray in West Ryde Police were patrolling West Ryde Railway Station at about 1.40pm on Wednesday, June 7 when they were alerted by the public to an altercation between two males. One male was wearing red hoodie and the other, a black hoodie. Police approached the male in the red hoodie, who they said immediately became hostile towards police officers. When police spoke to the male in the black hoodie, he said the male in the red hoodie had punched him in the head. Police placed the male in a red hoodie under arrest for assault. The male in the red hoodie allegedly became aggressive when told he was under arrest, stating: “I’ve done nothing wrong”. A male police officer attempting to get hand cuffs on the offender was allegedly spat on by him. In the footage, the male in the red hoodie can be seen walking behind the male dressed in black. The male in the red hoodie allegedly used his left hand to nudge the backpack of the other male, causing him to step to his left. The male dressed in black then allegedly used his right hand and pushed the male in the red hoodie in the back as he was walking down the stairs in front of him. Police allege the male in the red hoodie then turned around and aggressively pushed the other male in the chest. Both males then allegedly engaged in a physical fight while bystanders watched. Police have since charged the male in the red hoodie with affray, while charges are pending for the male in the black hoodie. Raptor Squad seize two firearms during ‘Operation Patch’ targeting OMCG activity Raptor Squad has seized two firearms fol- lowing two-weeks of action targeting outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members and their asso- ciates under Operation Patch. Operation Patch was carried out from Wednes- day 24 May 2023 to Thursday 1 June 2023 in suburbs including Five dock, Westmead, Earl- wood and Wiley Park. During the operation, officers attached to Rap- tor Squad served four firearm prohibition orders, searched 26 vehicles, and completed 13 compli- ance checks at homes of members and associates attached to the Hells An- gels, Finks and Coman- chero motorcycle gangs. During the compliance checks, detectives also seized two firearms, suspended one firearms licence and issued 36 consorting warnings. Commander of Raptor Squad, Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis, said illegal OMCG activity is not welcome anywhere across the state. “Raptor Squad remain dedicated to stopping the activities of OMCG members and associates before it escalates in any suburb,” Det Supt Koutsoufis said. “Operation Patch is a proactive tasking to ensure our targets know if they put a foot wrong, we’ll be making sure they feel the full force of the law. “This is no knee-jerk reaction, rather it’s routine practice. If you are a member or associate of an OMCG, you should always expect a visit from the Raptor Squad.” NSW Police launch Operation Snow Safe NSW Police are urging the community to plan their journeys and stay ‘Snow Safe’ following the commencement of the 2023 ski season last Sat- urday. Police said ski resorts are expecting crowds, despite less-than-ideal conditions, and addi- tional police have been deployed to the Snowy Mountains region from across the state as part of the high-visibility police operation. Visitors can expect to see officers from gener- al duties, the Traffic and Highway Patrol Com- mand, Southern Region Enforcement Squad, li- censing police and other specialist officers – in- cluding trained Alpine Op- erators – throughout the season. Southern Region Com- mander, Assistant Com- missioner Peter Cotter APM, said while the slopes are yet to see heavy snowfalls, police will be out and about throughout the snow sea- son targeting road safety, anti-social behaviour and personal safety. “Our officers will be tar- geting any risky behaviour on local and arterial roads and alcohol-related crime in the local venues, as well as ensuring those on and around the mountain have taken the right precau- tions,” Assistant Commis- sioner Cotter said. NSW Police are also urging hikers visiting the region to ensure their per- sonal safety by submitting a Trip Intention Form and hiring a Personal Loca- tor Beacon (PLB) before heading out into the na- tional park. PLBs are free of charge by way of a refundable de- posit from one of the Na- tional Parks and Wildlife Service centres located at numerous locations, in- cluding Jindabyne, as well as Perisher and Thredbo resorts. It follows several recent close calls where three rescues took place over five days last month within Kosciuszko National Park. Police are reminding ski- ers, snow boarders and hikers to wear appropriate snow gear, carry enough supplies and have some form of communication device on them at all times. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 14 June, 2023 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER TIGER fans will anxiously await the result of surgery on our captain courageous hooker Api Koroisau whose jaw was shattered in a brave charge towards the Tiddlies try line in the opening minutes of Thursday night’s blockbuster. Fans will also await scans on halfback Luke Brooks who broke down with a hamstring injury while chasing an intercept and was forced to leave the field. Coach Tim Sheens said he fears Api will be out for more than six weeks but Luke could be back after four weeks. Inspired by Api’s example to put his life on the line for the Tigers, his replacement Jake Simpkin stepped up to the task right away, with a short pass that sent forward David Klemmer over for his first try as a Tiger in the 20th minute. David has now scored six tries in his NRL career with three against the Tiddlies and his surge towards the try line is a move supercoach Tim has been practicing in training. Fullback Jahream Bula had another brilliant game with his lightning pace and great tackling ability running down an intercept before he later skipped across the field, fended off five Tiddlies’ tacklers and slid across the line for a sensational solo try in the 65th minute. Jahream also made 226 metres, six tackle busts and two line breaks. English forward John Bateman was immense in midfield and made an incredible 56 tackles. After two games where the Tigers crossed the line three times in five minutes, Tim has his side primed for a surge to grand final glory in coming weeks with games against the Mexicans, a bye and then two eagerly awaited clashes against the Cowgirls and the Gummies. In other news, the Tigers farewelled Balmain legend Billy Bischoff Jr last week. Billy Junior made his debut at Leichhardt HQ in 1957 and played 151 first grade games in nine seasons to score 34 tries in several positions that included halfback.
