2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 21 February, 2024 Father Martin’s Musings How great things happen She thought for a moment and slowly said; “Treat people as if they were who they can be and then so often they will reach this goal.” These insightful words came from the renowned German writer and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Another of this man’s quotes that was invaluable in wisely leading others was “In the realms of ideas everything depends upon enthusiasm yet in the real world all rests on perseverance.” With a warm smile this lady made the point that all valuable ideals will still get tested when students, teachers and parents would push boundaries. Experience has shown me that when leaders are positive and life giving in their words and actions then great things can then begin to happen. I well remember a fellow student make this comment about a school principal that we both were blessed to have; “He constantly made us feel as if we were covered in sunshine!” And the coincidence here was this man had to deal with very few behavioural issues from students during his time as principal. Jesus of Nazareth so often believed in the greatness and the potential of people such as when he called the fishermen Andrew and Simon; “Come to me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark Chapter 1, verse 17) Fr Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Sydney. A much-loved, well-respected school principal was asked before her retirement what was the one principle that sustained her over the many years as a school leader. This little cat has a big heart This week’s Cat Of The Week is proof that Love Conquers All. IBeth Pussycat is currently up for adoption at Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals where the team have recently nursed her back to health. “Tiny IBeth was a Valentine’s Day symbol as she is a very loving cat in spite of having had so little love in her life,’’ the team said. “She has suffered horrendous neglect, which may leave her with ongoing minor health issues, but since coming to us her health and weight have greatly improved and all here are rather taken by her.” The team said that - having just turned one - she ☐ IBeth Pussycat is an active indoors cat. “She is here with another cat rescued at the same time but can go to a new home as a single cat,’’ the team said. “If you would like to meet IBeth or some other cats or even rabbits just make an appointment so we can show you around.” IBeth is desexed, microchipped vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed. Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill In praise of Father Kevin Marea De Angelis of Hunters Hill With the loss of the late Fr Kevin Bates OAM SM, we struggle to answer this question. As a young teacher at the age of 21, I first met Fr Kevin Bates at the Marist Fathers seminary in Toongabbie. My first impressions like many I suspect, was “what a talent”. He was a raconteur, a beautiful songwriter and comedian. At that time his hymns, from his albums “Sing it Dance around“and “Whispers”, Fr Kevin could relate the gospels with such meaning and connection to life today. It takes diligence, perseverance, faith, and time to apply God’s word into daily life. Kevin was a master at trusting that God would carry him through his faith journey. Kevin wrote: “We come to learn that the mission of the gospel, is all about our own transformation as well as the healing, support or love that others need from us.” In the 80s Fr Kevin worked in both primary and high schools around Australia with students and staff, giving retreats, conferences and in consultancy work. Marriage preparation and the celebration of marriages and baptisms formed a significant part of his ministry. People came from all over the state and Australia to have him celebrate their marriage or baptise their baby. I called him the “King Of Splash’, a gentle dig at his popularity and demand. Arriving in Hunters Hill as parish priest was a Godsend to our community. He was appointed to heal and nourish our parish and he did just that. He set to work writing to all parishioners introducing himself and offering open dialogue to those who had been lost or hurt by the recent troubled church. His door was always open. He gathered and formed groups for social justice, liturgy, grief support, youth, and aged care, just to How do we honour and remember someone who has left an indelible mark on a community like ours? name a few, that thrived under his guidance and leadership. I suppose the greatest gift for me, was the love of all children and their love of him. I had the privilege of working closely with him across school and parish. He spent many mornings at Villa Maria Catholic Primary school, entertaining, telling stories and singing with the children, -he was one of Gods Whisperers, a shepherd, a rockstar who lived largely and nourished all he encountered. The elderly, the in-firmed and people of all ages called him a friend His impact on the spiritual fabric and the lives of our community is truly immeasurable. Kevin was a shepherd indeed, of peace, love, compassion, humour, truth, understanding and positive activism. He even wrote about it. A shepherd I’ll be to you I know your name, I know the heart of your story A shepherd I’ll be I hope you feel at home, no matter how long since you saw me. In our parish prayer he wrote “May our world be somehow more alive because you have passed this way”- how blessed we have been, how alive we have become, because Kevin passed our way. We will honour and long remember Fr Kevin Bates OAM SM ADVOCATING FOR OUR COMMUNITY By Kylea Tink MP* Following relentless community advocacy, the Government has finally moved to introduce a binding New Vehicle Efficiency Standard by 1 January 2025. The standard will bring Australia in line with international markets, giving us a greater range of car models that use less fuel, and produce less noxious gases and carbon emissions. This is a win for the family budget, a win for the climate, and a win for our community, which has been lobbying for a strong fuel efficiency standard for some time. I’ve continued to lobby for North Sydney’s priorities by asking for funding for our area in the 2024-25 Federal Budget. Based on conversations that my team and I have had with local councils, community groups and residents, I have asked the Government to fund the maintenance and improvement of local reserves and vantage points; invest in local research institutes and performing arts venues; and develop much-needed sporting facilities to meet demand as our population grows. I have also pushed for more support for the programs and organisations that provide help to those who need it, including the Mary’s House domestic violence shelter and youth mentoring organisation Streetwork. And I’ve called more to be spent on cutting both Australia’s carbon emissions and household costs, for example through clean energy incentives and the Fuel Efficiency Standards that we’ve worked so hard to secure. The Albanese Government’s proposed changes to the Stage 3 Tax Cuts have been hotly debated across the country and as always, my position has been shaped by your feedback. Ultimately, North Sydney supports the changes, with just over twothirds, or 68%, of residents supporting the changThe new year of parliamentary sittings is well and truly under way, with some big developments this month in taxation, workplace relations and on the climate front. es and 18% opposing them. The changes will mean that 7 out of 10 of North Sydney taxpayers will now receive an equal or bigger tax cut than they otherwise would have. At the same time, our electorate as a whole will ultimately receive $77 million less, because those who pay the highest taxes will receive less of a discount. Understandably, many in our community feel let down by a government that promised as recently as December that the cuts would go ahead unchanged. I have raised these concerns in Parliament and will continue to demand more transparency and community consultation as we move forward. I look forward to engaging with you further on these and other issues in the weeks to come.‚Ä® (* Kylea Tink is the Independent federal Member for North Sydney) Here we go again Dear Sir, Here we go again. More illegal boat arrivals. Once again we see a re-emergence of filthy people smugglers dumping their high-paying human cargo in remote regions of WA. The Federal Government need to increase surveillance (and spending) in border protection like the previous Coalition Government and send these economic refugees back to their homeland and stop wasting our taxpayer money in Naru. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Different strokes for different folks Dear Sir, About two years ago now a rock must have fallen or was pushed onto the northern footpath of Constitution Road between See and Bowden Streets. This is a footpath that has been in use since Moses was in short pants and as far as I know has caused no one any harm in all that time. Ryde Council engineers however, no doubt primarily worried about possible litigation, decided to take urgent and drastic action. So they blocked off the footpath, put up multiple warning signs, changed the pedestrian crossing and tried to fence off the southern side footpath. The aim of all this was to force pedestrians to walk up and down perhaps 50 or more steps to get to Bay Road and the station. Surprise surprise! Most people don’t want to or simply can’t walk up all those steps, so now simply walk up the road, which of course is a far more hazardous than the minuscule risk of a falling rock. The council became aware of this so then erected flashing electronic signs to demand drivers slow down. I very much doubt in all this time anyone from the council has looked at the footpath to see if any more rocks have in fact fallen down. Meanwhile, in complete contrast to this approach, we have River Rd in Lane Cove with a rock wall several times higher and many times longer with a footpath at the bot- tom all the way just Carlo Sports’ hostile takeover concerning Dear Sir, The hostile takeover of Denistone Bowling Club orchestrated by Carlo Sports is deeply concerning and motivated solely by financial gain. Carlo’s plan to close the Denistone premises and capitalise on its sale proceeds, ostensibly benefiting patrons frequenting Carlo’s establishments, is disheartening. However, our priority should be the preservation of Denistone’s operations for the collective benefit of its longstanding members, who have contributed to its capital accumulation. The capital amassed over the years should sustain club and bowling activities, ensuring members’ wellbeing until resources are depleted. The unanimous resolution by Ryde Council to acquire the Denistone site indicates an intent to maintain the club’s continuity. Therefore, Ryde Council must hold Carlo accountable for the detrimental impact of Denistone’s abrupt closure. Carlo must uphold the interests of Denistone’s members during this transitional period. Treating members as shareholders in a hostile takeover is unjustifiable. The recent resolution by the council at last week’s extraordinary meeting does not adequately convey the urgency to address Carlo’s actions. In line with Councillor Roy Maggio’s proposed amend- ment to the motion, Council should issue a firm ultimatum to Carlo that there must be ongoing access to users of the Denistone site, or they risk termination of the contract for sale. Wednesday 21 February, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Hunters Hill wants planning bureaucrats to front public meeting in coming weeks Hunters Hill Council will hold a public meeting where planning bureaucrats will be invited to explain the impact of the state government’s proposed housing reforms on the heritage municipality. Councillors unanimously expressed concern about the proposed reforms - which could override the Council’s planning controls if they come into force later this year - during Monday night’s Extraordinary Council meeting. The seven councillors also spoke about the need to defend Hunters Hill’s character, environment and road networks from an expected increase in property development to meet the reforms’ targets to build thousands of new homes across Sydney. The reforms specifically aim to increase the supply of housing to provide new homes for thousands of Sydney residents who cannot afford to rent or buy property close to shops and transport hubs because they’ve been priced out of a competitive market. Of particular concern to councillors is the possibility the reforms will allow six storey or higher developments near shopping centres despite these areas currently zoned as Low Density Residential under Hunter’s Hill’s Local Environment Plan. Mayor Zac Miles said he hopes the bureaucrats will also address concerns about over development in heritage conservation areas. “The silence around our heritage conservation areas gives me concern they will spiral out of control,’’ he said. He also said Sydney Water does not have the infrastructure to service a huge local increase in property development. Independent Clr Richard Quinn said the Council’s message to the government should be ‘’short, sharp and to the point’’ while Independent Clr Jim Sanderson said “it would be a tragedy” if the Woolwich Village was reclassified as a shopping area and subject to six storey developments. The Hunters Hill Trust urged the Council “to go hard’’ in its opposition to any reforms that give property developers the power to override Hunter’s Hill’s Local Environment Plan while local Anglican parish minister the Reverend Michael Armstrong told the meeting ‘’more and more community standards are being pushed aside by developers.’’ The meeting empowered the Mayor and General Manager Mitchell Murphy to hold direct talks with State Planning Minister Paul Scully. College students at risk says councillor The concerns were raised in an Urgency Motion during last Tuesday night’s Extraordinary Council meeting by Independent Councillor Roy Maggio. He said the school is the only one in the City of Ryde without a Transport Management Plan. “It is quite simple, a child nearly got run over (last week) - do you want that on the news?” he said. “Because we’re on the news for everything else.” Deputy Mayor Clr Daniel Han (Lib) is a teacher at the College and has asked for a traffic report. He told the meeting he is also concerned for his own safety. “The concern here is about the 300 Year Seven students and with all these Year Seven students being picked up and dropped off it has been chaos,’’ he said. “Part of the issue is a whole load of young people driving to school.’’ Labor Clr Penny Pedersen said a meeting about road safety between staff, residents and councillors had previously been held at the College and she asked Council staff if action had been taken on issues ‘’we spent a lot of time on.’’ She said suggestions had been written on a white board and ranged from street signage to bus zones. The Weekly Times can confirm that former Mayor and Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale successfully introduced lower speed zones around the school but local residents told TWT a shortage of parking forced parents to park in their driveways during drop off zones and this practice threatened the safety of students walking along footpaths. Concerns have previously been raised about students sitting on gutters waiting to be picked up. Hunters Hill High School recently trialled a system where students from different years arrived and left the school at different times to alleviate overcrowding during drop off periods. In a email to all Ryde councillors, seen by The Weekly Times, one concerned resident said the during the last few months, the Ryde Secondary College drop-off in the morning and pick-up in the afternoon have been absolutely horrible and frightening and very unsafe to say the least. “The major concern is that, at times, parents are stopping their vehicle in the middle of the road and letting their own child get out from the right hand side to cross the road while there is ongoing traffic,” the resident wrote. “It’s a very scary sight and it frightens me to see this every morning. It’s only a matter of time before a child will be killed. “We all talk about not speeding and being safe around School zones. Please tell me where is the safety for this school and the parents that think it’s okay to drop kids off like this.” The resident thanked Councillor Roy Maggio for taking “my calls from early mornings to late afternoons” on the safety issue. “I plead to you all at Ryde Council to take this on board and take the necessary actions as childrens’ lives are at risk,” the resident wrote. City of Ryde staff have been authorised to meet with Ryde Secondary College staff and neighbouring residents to urgently discuss concerns raised about child safety during school drop off and pick up times. ☐ Residents have expressed safety concerns due to traffic chaos and risky behaviour in Malvina Street near the entrance to Ryde Secondary College, during student drop off and pick up times. Ferry good news on Parramatta River and Olympic Park services A DECISION to add an extra seven services on the F3 Parramatta River route each weekday and an additional 26 services over the weekend between Circular Quay and Olympic Park, has been welcomed by Member for Drummoyne, Stephanie Di Pasqua, as a win for her Peninsula communities. The change has come following months of pressure on Transport for NSW by Di Pasqua and the community. Thousands of frustrated residents from Cabarita all the way to Drummoyne – and in between – have been turned away for months on end with ferries reaching capacity on weekends. The Drummoyne Electorate includes the communities of Drummoyne, Chiswick, Russell Lea, Wareemba, Abbotsford, Five Dock, Canada Bay, Cabarita, Breakfast Point, Mortlake, Concord, Concord West, and Rhodes. “We are pleased to see progress being made for increased services to the most highly patronised wharves on the F3,” Diane Brown, a local resident and spokesperson for Friends of Cabarita Park and Wharf Community Group, said. “For over a decade, our group has consistently advocated the need for improvement, most recently in meetings with Action for Public Transport and Howard Collins, Coordinator-General, Transport for NSW. “We thank Stephanie Di Pasqua for her representation on this important matter.” Ms Di Pasqua said she was thrilled at the announcement and relieved for her community. “Being a community bordered by the river, many residents rely on the F3 Parramatta River Ferry service during the week to travel to and from work, as well as attend events and attractions in the city on weekends,” she said. “I am pleased this important decision was made which will positively impact my community. “Patronage data is showing demand for the service is only increasing. It is important that timetabling and frequency of services continue to reflect the data.” ☐ Member for Drummoyne, Stephanie Di Pasqua, with local resident and spokesperson for Friends of Cabarita, Diane Brown. Ryde’s population could increase by 83 percent under government’s 43,000 new homes scheme These figures were discussed by Ryde Councilors last week and are part of the government’s Sydney wide scheme to build more homes to address a housing crisis where current market value for available rental and other property has put it out of the financial reach of a growing number of people. An Extraordinary Meeting of the City of Ryde Council was held last Tuesday to discuss the potential 83 per cent population hike with the majority Liberal councillors blasting the government proposal as short sighted and likely to impact on Ryde’s existing low density residential zones. Liberal Clr Trenton Brown said the government proposal - known as the Explanation of Intended Effects, Changes to Create Low and Mid-Rise Housing (EIE) - needs to be opposed in the strongest possible terms. “We need to shout from the rooftops because this is all about community first and this will be devastating to us,’’ he said at the meeting. “We have well and truly exceeded our housing targets and we’re quite within our rights to push back and push back hard.’’ Labor Clr Bernard Purcell spoke against confrontation. “We need options for housing, we need to stay at the table,’’ he said. His Labor colleague Clr Penny Pedersen said Ryde needs more affordable dwellings. “If we are going to be aggressive it will not be productive,’’ she said. Liberal councillors argue the EIE provides no evidence-based plans on how increased housing density would be serviced by existing infrastructure and other essential services. They also rejected the proposed planning controls in the EIE to its R2 – low density residential zones. In a majority vote, councillors authorised CEO Wayne Rylands to “take all action necessary” to implement a resolution that calls on the government to take “a genuinely collaborative approach to working with all councils to resolve the current The City of Ryde’s population could increase by 83 per cent with 43,090 new dwellings and 107,725 new residents under a housing scheme proposed by the NSW Minns Government. ☐ An artist’s impression of the NSW Government’s proposed plans to spectacularly increase residential housing at Macquarie Park (image: NSW DPE) housing crisis.” That includes the delivery of commensurate infrastructure, essential services, open space, and employment opportunities. Councillors also resolved to call on the government to have a larger role in the provision of public and affordable housing instead of incentivising Build-to-Rent options for property developers. Mr Rylands stressed that City of Ryde is still waiting for the government to fund local infrastructure that includes schools, roads and parklands. “We have consistently exceeded our housing targets and will continue to do so, whilst noting the State Government has not delivered on the required infrastructure to support the increased residential density that our City has already experienced,” he said.

Urgency motion on asbestos in Ryde The Urgency Motion was put by Labor Clr Penny Pedersen who wants to find out if mulch used in Ryde is from the same stock of contaminated mulch that closed parks in Sydney’s inner west and the CBD. Low levels of asbestos - possibly illegally dumped - were recently found by council staff at a sports field on the Parramatta River foreshore and the former Meadowbank Public School site was recently cordoned off due to asbestos concerns. Other councils are expected to follow Ryde’s lead as the City of Sydney announced it cancelled the Mardi Gras Fair after traces of asbestos were found in Victoria Park, Camperdown. The State Government confirmed on Thursday all the contaminated mulch found so far originated with the same supplier, Greenlife Resource Recovery Facility. The Environment Protection Authority’s CEO Tony Chappel said homes may have also been contaminated. “There are some private contexts we have identified and we are working through those with the property owners and conducting testing,” he said. He said recalling the mulch was “an option we are still exploring” and that he had asked the Greenlife Resource Recovery Facility to voluntarily recall it. Premier Chris Minns said on Thursday there could be hundreds of asbestos contamination sites in Sydney but the government doesn’t have the resources to preventatively tape off all sites while testing is underway. “Not every projected park or contact tracing park has tested positive to asbestos but to lock every single park up or school or hospital would just be beyond our resources,” he said. Environment Minister Penny Sharpe said 20 new sites had tested positive for asbestos last week and include multiple parks, rail corridors, a school, and a hospital. “This is the largest investigation the Environment Protection Authority has undertaken in recent decades,” she said. She said the number one priority was “contact tracing” down the complex supply chain, and the testing, reporting and management of any positive results. Parks and playgrounds across the City of Ryde that may have traces of asbestos are expected to be investigated by the Council and relevant agencies under an Urgency Motion passed by councillors during last Tuesday night’s Extraordinary Council Meeting. ☐ Victoria Park in Camperdown is one of the asbestos contaminated parks closed by the City of Sydney. ☐ Japanese master film maker Ryuichi Sakamoto. Council to mediate return for Denistone’s booted bowlers Last Tuesday night’s Extraordinary Council Meeting saw councillors unanimously endorse CEO Wayne Rylands and his team to pursue mediation as the Council continues on-going talks to purchase the Carlingford Club owned land which the Denistone club and bowling greens currently occupy. Mr Rylands told councillors the bowlers’ eviction had ‘blind-sided’ the Council, which will try to mediate with Carlingford to get them back on the site while a land sale is being negotiated. “There is obviously some other kind of dispute going on we haven’t been made aware of,’’ Mr Rylands said. Independent Clr Roy Maggio wants the bowlers to return as precondition of the negotiations. “The Carlingford Bowling Club made a decision to kick out the bowlers and our hands are tied by the Carlingford Bowling Club and we need to tell them we are prepared to pull out of the purchase,” he said. No other councillors supported Clr Maggio’s preconditional strategy but councillors from both the Liberal Party and the Labor Party expressed their wholehearted support to get the bowlers back on the site during the mediation process. “We are well and truly on your side,’’ Councillor and Ryde MP Jordan Lane told bowlers in the public gallery during the meeting. The City of Ryde will take on a mediation role between the Carlingford Bowling Club and the bowlers at the Denistone Bowling Club the “Carlo” evicted and locked out earlier this month. ☐ A desk used by one of Denistone Bowling Club’s competition administrators was found in a skip bin behind Denistone Sports Club on Friday night. Peak doctors group urges new Medicare item It comes following the College’s submission to the Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review Advisory Committee’s MBS Continuous Review. RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins said that a new Medicare item would lead to faster treatment and significant government savings. “We estimate that supporting the delivery of iron infusions in GP clinics through a new Medicare item could deliver cost savings to government of as much as $123 million per year. It would also reduce out of pocket costs for patients and keep people out of hospital,” she said. “In 2021-22 alone, more than 60,000 patients were admitted to hospital for severe iron deficiency anaemia and received same day treatment. “Many of these patients could have received their infusions in general practice instead. Advances in technology mean that this is an absolute no-brainer.” She said the Government should act to save money and improve access for patients without delay. Dr Higgins said the new item should be combined with dynamic public health messaging educating patients across Australia about the causes and symptoms of iron deficiency and nutritional information about how to boost iron levels in our diet. “This is a problem that needs fixing right away,” she said. “Iron deficiencies are the most common nutritional deficiency in Australia and remain stubbornly underdiagnosed. “Patients with sufficiently low iron for a long period can develop anaemia and may need to be hospitalised.” She said there were now formulations that could be safely delivered by a GP in their clinic. “So, the technology is available, but what is holding us back is the fact that there are no Medicare items subsidising iron infusions in general practice,” Dr Higgins said. “As a result, many practices charge over $200 to administer them and whilst the practice can bill a standard consultation item, hence lowering the patient’s outof-pocket costs by $41.10 or $80.10 depending on concessions, they cannot bill a longer item as nurse The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is calling on the federal Government to introduce a new Medicare item to increase patient access to treatment for iron deficiency anaemia and achieve massive cost savings. time cannot be included when billing these items.” She said out-of-pocket patient fees of well over $100 were out of the reach for many people, particularly at a time of high cost of living pressures. “The solution is right in front of us – a new Medicare item subsidising iron infusions in general practice so that more patients can get the treatment they need, when they need it,” Dr Higgins concluded. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) was established in 1958 and is Australia’s peak general practice representative organisation. The RACGP has more than 41,000 members working in or towards a career in general practice, more than 9,500 of them live and work in rural and remote areas of the country. Nine in every 10 GPs are with the RACGP.

in an elevated position on the northern edge of the peninsula with unparalleled water views of Drummoyne Bay, out to the harbour and the city’s stunning skyline. The milestone was celebrated with a groundbreaking event, with key project leaders and stakeholders in attendance, including CE directors Wayne Chivas, Shane Smollen and Nathan Chivas; Develotek director John Fernandes; Trescon directors Michael Kounellis and Nick Rodopoulos; and SJB director Adam Haddow. Sydney property developers Central Element (CE) and Develotek officially marked the commencement of construction of their first Inner West project – the once-in-a-generation Bianca Drummoyne. Acclaimed Sydney builder, Trescon will deliver the ultra-luxury offering, consisting of 12 generous house-like proportioned three and four-bedroom waterfront residences. ☐ Pictured, l to r, Adam Haddow (Director, SJB); Nick Rodopoulos (Director, Trescon); Shane Smollen (Director, Central Element); John Fernandes (Director, Develotek); Wayne Chivas (Director, Central Element); Nathan Chivas (MD, Central Element); and Michael Kounellis (Director, Trescon) ☐ An artist’s impression of the Bianca development in Drummoyne (images: Central Element) Boasting an award-winning team, the established iCIRT certified Sydney builder, Trescon will bring architecture and design firm, SJB’s creative vision for Bianca to life. Trescon has strong experience across a diverse portfolio of projects with a passion for high-end luxury residences, notably the revamp of a 1928 Wunulla Road, Point Piper residence led by architect Richard Stanisich and sold for $69 million. “At CE, we seek out exceptional sites in premium suburbs to build luxurious living spaces of the highest quality that establish new benchmarks for their respective areas,” CE managing director Wayne Chivas said. “It is important that we have partners who really share in our vision, and we have no doubt that with Develotek, Trescon and SJB on board, we will create something truly remarkable with Bianca.” Mr Kounellis said Bianca Drummoyne represented a pivotal moment in Trescon’s journey. “Bianca is more than just a project,” he said. “For us, it’s a testament to the shared vision we have for designing and constructing incredible spaces that redefine living in Sydney.” There has been significant interest in Bianca since the project was announced, primarily attracting the interest of local downsizers or empty nesters due to its boutique nature and house-like proportions. With most residences exceeding 200sqm of internal space, buyers have been drawn to SJBs generous layouts, particularly the offer of expansive state of the art kitchens, butler’s pantry and secondary living spaces. Bianca’s rare north-facing position optimises harbour views, with residences boasting 10-13 metres of water frontage, further adding to its unique appeal. The first release of Bianca is now sold out, with the second release featuring a selection of three and four-bedroom residences now selling through McGrath Hunters Hill sales agents Tracey Dixon and Rob Alfeldi. Completion for Bianca is anticipated for mid to late 2025.

Wednesday 21 February, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 19 NSW NPL 2024 season kicked-off last weekend No goals at Christie Park The Sky Blues of Sydney FC had more goalscoring opportunities outside the opening 15 minutes but NWS Spirit had the first couple of chances in front of a passionate home crowd. At the other end, the hosts struggled in the final third with only a few half chances falling their way in the second half. Sydney FC assistant coach Howard Fondyke was proud of his side after the game and said it was fantastic to see so many young boys make their debut and prove they could really compete. “All these guys have potential to play at higher levels and showed glimpses of quality and we could have walked away with a victory tonight,” he said. NWS Spirit FC head coach David Perkovic said he is looking for improvement. “We started well and probably had chances to score two or free goals,’’ he said. “We had some issues with player availability today and the effort was there, but there’s a lot of improvement to come from us.” Blacktown City defeated 2023 Premiers APIA Leichhardt by six goals to three in an exhilarating match at Landen Stadium in Blacktown on Saturday. APIA Leichhardt’s three goals were scored by Jordan Segreto in the 16th minute, Ben Gibson in the 88th minute and Rory Jordan in the 89th minute. The final whistle brought a quality, chaotic and exciting opening match of the round to an end and APIA coach Franco Parisi stressed his commitment to playing sexy football. “The 2024 season provides exciting opportunities for us at APIA in our journey to nurture some of the best local talent to play sexy football,” he said. “With Lambert Park being resurfaced, we will turn to Leichhardt Oval as our home for the start of the season, and then, returning to our Lambert Park by April. “The exciting format of 30 games, which includes mid-week matches, along with the Australia Cup, as well as the potential for Waratah Cup and Finals football, means that there is so much to play for, we are truly excited for the season.” North West Sydney Spirit FC held Sydney FC to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW competition on Saturday evening at Christie Park in North Ryde. ☐ Chances were few at Christie Park on Saturday night ☐ Blacktown City dominated Saturday’s thriller against APIA Matildas star Cortnee Vine pulls out of Olympics qualifiers Already without star striker Sam Kerr (knee), the Matildas have now lost midfielder Vine for personal reasons for the twolegged, home and away battle with Uzbekistan. Vine, who plays for Sydney FC’s women’s team and trains at its centre of excellence at Macquarie Park, pulled out of the squad last week for unspecified personal reasons. Vine has been replaced in the squad by Western Sydney Wanderers forward Sophie Harding, who has scored nine goals in 15 A-League women’s appearances this season. The Matildas meet Uzbekistan on Saturday week in Tashkent before returning home for the second leg at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on February 28. But the disappointment for Vine and Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson was matched by the delight of Harding who was working a 10-hour shift when she got the call she would be joining the squad. “I was very overwhelmed. I just burst out laughing because I was so shocked in a way and then I got a bit teary and then rang my mum and Robbie (Wanderers coach Robbie Hooker) and they were all so excited,” she said. Coach Tony Gustavsson had already turned to 35-year-old striker Michelle Heyman to help fill the void left by Kerr to try and get to Paris. “Selecting this squad has been a challenge with a lot of moving parts, from injuries to some players and reduction of competitive match minutes for other players due to off-seasons,” Gustavsson said. The aggregate winner over the two legs will qualify for this year’s Olympics in Paris. The Matildas’ hopes of reaching the Paris Olympics have suffered a further blow with the withdrawal of Sydney FC star Cortnee Vine from this month’s qualifiers against Uzbekistan. Mighty Moose wins final Jim Juniper from the Club said Peter Musumeci deserved his victory. “By the 5th end it was all square at 5/5, at which point Peter hit his straps to win the next six ends and shoot to a very handy lead at 19/5,’’ he said. “Alan then rallied, staging a fighting comeback to narrow Peter’s lead to 9 shots at 22/13. “However, the margin proved to be just too much as Mighty Moose then knuckled down to gather the required three shots on the last two ends for an emphatic 25/13 Championship victory. “Diligently marked by HHBC President Glen Norris, the game was played in excellent spirit and the high quality bowls was watched by a large and appreciative gallery.” T Peter “Mighty Moose” Musumeci had an impressive victory against Alan McMillan to take out the final of the Minor Singles Championship at the Hunters Hill Bowling Club on Sunday. ☐ Glen, Peter and Alan are pictured at the final. Sydney extend A-League streak with win over Adelaide In-form Sydney extended their unbeaten streak to five games thanks to goals in either half from Robert Mak and Fabio Gomes in humid conditions at Allianz Stadium, where the Sky Blues leapfrogged cross-town rivals Western Sydney Wanderers into fifth place. Javi Lopez did give Adelaide a glimmer of hope in the 94th minute, but it was a mere consolation. The result only heaped further misery on Adelaide, who have won just one of their past eight matches. The struggling Reds also lost Josh Cavallo and Ben Warland to injury, while Japanese star Hiroshi Ibusuki hobbled off clutching his hamstring. Adelaide were already without Nestory Irankunda due to illness. “Our style of play has brought a new identity, a clear identity,” Sydney midfielder Anthony Caceres told Paramount+ after the match. “One that we want to be the protagonist every game. Take charge early with our press and energy and put on a good show for our fans.” Sydney had plenty of possession without making it count on the scoreboard, Sydney FC inflicted more pain on Adelaide United with a 2-1 victory in the Isuzu UTE A-League as the Reds not only tasted defeat but were left with a mounting injury list. ☐ Sydney FC gave its fanatics in ‘The Cove’ at the northern end of Allianz Stadium plenty to cheer about after downing Adelaide United 2-1 on the weekend. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) though they did break the deadlock in the 27th minute. Adelaide, who were forced into an early change following an injury to Cavallo, carelessly gave the ball away and it ended in Mak expertly putting the ball in the back of the net. Fabio Gomes had the ball in the back of the net on the hour. However, it was ruled out for a foul, much to the dismay of the Brazilian. He did get his goal six minutes from the end. Isaias was penalised for a foul inside the penalty area and Fabio Gomes converted the spot-kick. Former Espanyol star Javi Lopez popped up at the back post with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time to set up a nervy finish, but Sydney held on for maximum points. 20 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 21 February, 2024 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Win kicks off the Benji era Three tries were enough to secure victory in the Land Of The Long White Cloud with Alex Seyfarth crossing the line in the 8th minute followed by tries to Aidan Sezer in the 16th minute and Sione Latoa-Vaihu in the 57th minute. All three tries were converted as our Captain Courageous Api Koroisau continued his radar sharp goalkicking where he left off last year. With a 12 to six lead before the Kiwi’s had a man sent off with an hour to go, new recruit Aidan controlled the show in the halves. The first try came after some clever work from Api who set up Alex to scramble over the try line with Stefano Utoikamanu running a convincing decoy that left the kiwis as dazzled as a rabbit caught in a car’s headlights. Alex and Aidan combined for the Tigers’ second try of the afternoon with Aidan getting the ball down after some nice work down the left and some great passing to reverse the attack back inside. The final try came with a pin point accurate bomb caught by rookie Alex Lobb who rose high above two defenders to find Sione on his inside, 23 minutes before full time. The game was very much a trial with Super Coach Benji Marshall fielding rookie players in various experimental roles and positions. Benji will be pleased with the Tigers’ committed defence, safe handling and an ever present threat in attack. What will have impressed Tiger fans is Aidan’s ability to replace Luke Brooks in the halves at the age of 32 and after four years out of first grade football. Tiger fans should be excited about what he can achieve in 2024 and had his hands on everything in the first half and combined well with rookie five-eighth Jayden Sullivan. The former Tiddlies and Faders halfback could be the key man in our Grand Final charge this season. Although the Kiwis have dominated this annual trial fixture at home in previous seasons, the Tigers had the most possession on Sunday and Sione Fainu led the way with ball in hand as he made 149 metres from 11 carries. Next week’s game against the Dragons in Mudgee at 8pm on Saturday will be a thriller with the Tigers set to unleash most of our big names given before the bye in round one. SEE YA THERE! The Tigers started the 2024 season with an explosive 18 to 16 win against the Kiwis in a trial match in Christchurch on Sunday afternoon. ☐ ALEX SEYFARTH dives over for the Tigers first try of the season in Sunday’s trial thriller against the Kiwis in Christchurch to set the tune for the Tigers’ 2024 season. 117 Ryedale Road West Ryde NSW 2114 Tel: 02 9807 2444 www.releagues.com.au www.facebook.com/rydeeastwoodleagues Gig Guide Visit website or scan QR code to book!
