THREE LUCKY readers can win double passes to the the May 29 opening night of Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society’s production of ‘The Sound of Music’. One of the most beloved musicals of all time is coming to Eastwood…. all the way from 1938 Austria, when an exuberant young governess brought music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis came to power. The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. Winners names The Sound Of Music double passes Parramatta hopes culture will entice SBS to migrate The City of Parramatta is keen for SBS to join the many multi-national organisations based in Parramatta and Lord Mayor Donna Davis this week called on the multilingual broadcaster to move its headquarters there. Lord Mayor Davis said that by locating in ParraThe Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) is undertaking a feasibility study to consider a move to Western Sydney and has been granted $1 million dollars by the Albanese government to fund the study. ☐ The Indian community is one of Parramatta’s largest and fastest growing communities. Father Martin’s Musings The loneliness of aged care The person invited ideally should not be a total stranger but just be enough of an outsider to offer some valuable insights. I recently heard of a Catholic Missionary Sister from India visiting an aged care home and after an hour being there, she made these poignant comments; “There is severe emotional poverty in this place as I notice whenever the door opens heads of the residents look towards the door hoping that the person coming in will be their visitor. This is a Western world reality as we rarely see this type of reaction from the people in aged care facilities in India.” Sadly, in Australia this observed reality from this Indian lady is a growing reality as it is reliably reported in aged care facilities on average 40 per cent of residents rarely if ever have anyone have regular visitors. I often see the same situation in a hospital situation where some patients never have anyone who comes to visit them. I vividly remember conducting a funeral for an elderly lady and the funeral directors and I were the only people present! Jesus of Nazareth makes the point; “As you wish that others would do to you, do to them.” (Luke Chapter 6, Verse 31) Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain So often the best way for someone to appreciate what they have is for someone from a different place and environment to come over and just observe and then comment what they see. Water colour talk The meeting will be held this Friday, May 12 at 10.30 to noon at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club, 117 Ryedale Rd, West Ryde. The visitors’ fee is $5. “The properties of Yupo paper and techniques used will also be explained,’’ Group President Priyani Kaneshalingam said. Priyani can be contacted on 9808 1125. The Friends of Art Group will hold its meeting in May with a demonstration of a water scene in water colour on Yupo paper by accomplished artist Judith Mc Creadie. Hunters Hill’s Learning for Leisure team will host a fashion parade titled Golden Girls at Boronia Park Uniting Church, Pittwater Road, on Wednesday May 24 at 11am. The Rotary Club of Hunters Hill Celebrates 65th Birthday The Birthday celebration also included a fundraiser for a worthy cause, the raising of funds for victims of Hurricane Gabrielle around Napier in New Zealand. The Black tie function was held at the Baytree in Greenwich which included entertainers organized for the gala evening. With over 70 members and friends of the Hunters Hill Club the function raised over $6,000 for the victims in NZ. Cyclone Gabrielle struck the New Zealand North Island on February 12th. “The NZ Prime Minister Chris Hipkins called Cyclone Gabrielle NZ’s biggest natural disaster this century. A state of emergency was declared in NZ’s North Island. At least 11 people died and hundreds of people are missing. The scale of the clean up and rebuild in the wake of the cyclone is massive and in some cases will take years.” On Wednesday 26th April, The Rotary Club of Hunters Hill Celebrated it’s 65th Birthday. The Club was chartered on Anzac Day in 1958. ☐ Christine Owen, Rotary District Governor, left, with Charles Amos, President Rotary Club of Hunters Hill cutting the 65th Birthday Cake matta, SBS will have access to all that the area has to offer and the communities it hosts, as they continue to grow and evolve. “We have all the elements to enable success and Parramatta also boasts the second-highest number of PhDs per capita in the Sydney area and this means SBS will have direct access to a local talent pool through Parramatta’s strong culture of education,” she said. Lise Joubert was the wife of French-born, naturalised (from 1849) New South Welshman, Didier Numa Joubert, a 19th merchant, shipping agent, property developer, sugar plantation owner, businessman, mayor and people trader who resided in Hunters Hill. While her husband’s transnational, far-flung, high-seas and somewhat slippery business activities have been the subject of scholarly interest, particularly my own, Lise has remained in the background, a shadowy figure, leaving but a scant trace in the colonial archive. Until now, little was known about her life and personality. Her diary, written in her native French in her 38th year, the year that France took possession of New Caledonia, opens a fascinating window into the domestic life of the Joubert family and into Lise herself, revealing her mores and attitudes and demonstrating her industriousness and semi-independence as a woman managing her farm and business while her husband built his empire. At the same time, it gives us a tantalising glimpse into early Hunters Hill colonial society. In 1847, the Jouberts purchased former convict and successful businesswoman Mary Reibey’s expansive property, Figtree farm, on the Lane Cove River in Hunters Hill. This was Wallumedegal land but by the 1830s, when the first white settlers began setting up homes in Hunters Hill, they, like most of Sydney’s Aboriginal clans, had been driven from the area, victims of smallpox and other European diseases and deliberate genocidal activity to “clear” the land. While it was no longer the rough and dangerous hideout of bushrangers and escaped convicts, the Hunters Hill of 1853 looked very different from how it would a decade or two later. This was a crucial time in the development of Hunters Hill, the end of an era, a turning point, the very beginning of the period of rampant construction that would radically transform the landscape. The diary recounts daily life for Lise – the running of the farm, social events and visits, and family activities and news. Lise’s use of language is telling of her attitude towards non-white others. She dehumanised the men, seeing only their skin colour, referring to them as “noirs” (blacks). As for her children, Lise registered only a slight interest. In 1853, there were three Joubert children – 13-year-old Numa, 12-year-old Ferdinand and Louise, aged ten. The youngest, Rose, would be born in 1855. The children appear now and again in the diary but they did not seem to be a focus of Lise’s attention. Even her husband seemed to have a bit part in Lise’s world with a mere six mentions throughout the year, in one, on his birthday no less, Lise referred to him simply by his initials “DNJ”. A translation of The Joubert diary can now be viewed on Hunters Hill Historical Society’s website: huntershillmuseum.org.au Associate Professor Karin Speedy writes for the Hunters Hill Historical Society. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 10 May, 2023 The week-long program is an initiative of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, supported by Transport for NSW, to raise awareness of road safety across the country. National Road Safety Week 2023 also coincides with the work our Council is doing to help promote road safety within our municipality. One of these initiatives is the latest round of our free child car seat safety check vouchers. Vouchers entitle recipients to have car seat inspections and adjustments conducted by an authorised restraint fitter, with a mobile service now available. You can contact our Road Safety Officer via [email protected]. gov.au or (02) 9911 3536, to access a voucher, which is valid until 14 June. For those residents responsible for teaching learner drivers how to safely get behind the wheel, we are hosting a free online workshop at 6pm on 18 May. The session aims to support parents and supervisors of learner drivers to be confident and effective teachers. The workshop will cover information about licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, tips for using the learner driver log book, a refresher on road rules and the importance of providing constructive feedback. HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Registrations are available through Eventbrite: teachingyourlearnerdriver. eventbrite.com.au. Walk Safely to School Day (19 May), which promotes health and pedestrian safety messages to children, their parents and carers, will be followed by Fatality Free Friday on 26 May, a campaign that aims to have a fatality free Friday on Australian roads and to encourage long-term community change. All these campaigns - at local, state and national levels - also serve to remind us that road safety is a shared responsibility; please remember to take care and travel safely. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill As many in our community have now returned to their school routine following the recent holiday break National Road Safety Week (14 to 21 May) acts as a timely reminder to take care on local streets, particularly in and around our schools and villages. It is eleven years since our Inaugural Concert, “A Taste of Nations”, held at St Joseph’s College in May 2012. Our Concert on Sunday May 28th will showcase three Australian composers. Raffaele Marcellino, a local Ryde composer, offers four short works including a World Premier piece written expressly for the Orchestra. Australian Composer Percy Grainger will be featured with a selection of traditional Irish tunes beautifully depicting the gentle life in County Derry. The Orchestra will perform the theme music for the movie ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’, composed by our multi-award winning former Deputy Mayor of Ryde, Christopher Gordon. A concert not to be missed! GEORGE PAPALLO OAM Deputy Chairman, RHHSO Opera House snub won’t be forgotten Dear Sir, One of the worst political decisions not to honour the Coronation of King Charles the Third was made by our new NSW Premier, Chris Minns, in the darkened Opera House decision. This landmark is owned by everyone in NSW and is NOT the plaything of a politician. If we can light it up for some random horse race, some revellers on St Patrick’s Day , then the historical coronation of a King is just as significant, if not more so. This bad decision that was reported around the world will be remembered by millions of future voters. As for the cost, $80K, how many thousands of dollars are paid to politicians who nominate themselves for state government, committees, like the recent Ice Committee. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that no government was going to legalise Ice as a “recreational” drug as recommended by this left-leaning Committee. The positive promotion of the Opera House is broadcast around globe and attracts millions of dollars (not $80K) in tourist revenue to NSW and Australia. CHRIS PIKE Ryde Hunters Hill Guest Column Rare Joubert diary discovered The recent discovery of Lise Joubert’s 1853 diary in the Hunters Hill Historical Society archives is a significant find for historians and others interested not only in local history but in the private sphere of Australian colonial society, women’s histories, histories of the home and domestic pursuits, social histories and Franco-Australian connections. Wednesday 10 May, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna Davis resigns Her resignation on Monday comes weeks after the appointment of new CEO Gail Connolly and Clr Davis will continue as a Labor Party councillor until the local government elections in September 2024. The election of a new Lord Mayor will be held at an Extraordinary Meeting of Council at 5.30pm on Monday, May 22, prior to the Council’s Ordinary meeting. “I wish to thank all Councillors and the Council staff for their support during my term as Lord Mayor and I wish the next Lord Mayor all the very best for a successful term in office,” Clr Davis said. Councillor Davis recently survived a motion to step down with Epping’s veteran independent Lorraine Wearne saying it is physically and mentally challenging to give 100 per cent to both roles. “You cannot do two full-time jobs fulltime, that’s really what it’s about,” Clr Wearne said. Independent councillor Dan Siviero, from the Our Local Community group said there would also be a conflict of interest if Clr Davis held both roles. “It doesn’t sit right with the community,” he said. Labor holds seven out of 15 positions on the council and The Greens hold one position. Donna Davis won last year’s TWT Footy Tipster competition and is a die hard fan of the Parramatta Eels. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) Budget allocates millions to save Cockatoo Island Located next to Woolwich and famous for its convict and industrial heritage, Cockatoo is the harbour’s largest island and a world heritage site that has been largely shut for safety reasons. The Federal Government has agreed to fund a““critical backlog” of maintenance work which Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek said needs to be done before it is too late to save the site. “What we’ve seen is that history, that heritage, literally slipping into the harbour and this spending is absolutely vital,’’ she said. “We have to protect it now or it won’t be there in 10 years’ time to protect.” Harbour Trust Executive Director Janet Carding said a priority is to save the Fitzroy Dock, which has historic links with Sydney Ferries and needs urgent work. Ms Carding said the Fitzroy Dock is the only convict-built dry dock surviving in Australia. “It is one of the primary reasons why this island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site,” she said. “We’ll now be able to carry out those maintenance works over the next few months.” In the 19th century, Cockatoo Island operated as a penal establishment and convicts quarried sandstone and built the barracks that still stand on the island’s plateau. They also built the southern hemisphere’s first dry dock, which took them 10 years to dig. “The heritage on Sydney Harbour belongs to all Australians,” Ms Plibersek said. Also called Wareamah, the island was a meeting place for Indigenous clans and during both world wars it was used to repair and build ships. Shipbuilding continued until the 1990s when the refit of a submarine was the last project. A sign says a tunnel is closed to the public and areas are fenced off to the public because cliffs are crumbling and wharves are rotting. Around 200,000 people visit the remaining open of the island each year, many of them school students. The budget has allocated more than $45 million to sites managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust with around $20 million going to Cockatoo Island. ☐ The Fitzroy Dock on Cockatoo Island will be saved by the Federal Government grant. ☐ The South Steyne under repair at the Fitzroy Dock. POLICE NEWS Bungling thieves caught on film Police alleged the theft took place on Tuesday, April 18 when an unlocked Mitsubishi Triton was parked in Gladesville with the keys in the ignition. “The vehicle is utilised for traffic management and is fitted with a sign board on the roof to provide visual direction aids to road users approaching the work site,’’ police said. “In addition, a dash cam is installed inside the vehicle with audio and video capabilities.” It is alleged the dash cam recorded the theft. “A male and female are seen on dash cam to walk to the front of the vehicle with the male telling the female to jump in,’’ police said. “Upon entering the vehicle, the female seated in the front passenger seat is heard saying ..oh my god, I think this is a bad idea.. do you know how to drive this thing.” The victim contacted Police who were able to identify the offenders and they have since been charged with stealing the vehicle. *** POLICE have caught two suspect burglars in Epping. The capture was made through the use of CCTV at a block of units in Epping where the male and female suspects are alleged to have stolen a parcel around 3am on Wednesday, December 7. “The male offender is seen to reach over the gate and open the locked gate from the inside,’’ police said. “The offenders then enter through the side gate into the complex and approach the main entrance of the ground lobby and the female is then seen to reach down and steal the parcel which was situated outside the main entrance door.” The alleged theft was reported to Police and both were charged with stealing. *** A MOTORCYCLE driver was charged with four offences in Eastwood around 5pm on Tuesday, May 2. Police report the learner driver was stopped by a police patrol for not wearing a helmet and not displaying his Learner Plates on the Kawasaki motorcycle. “He was also carrying a pillion passenger which is not permitted and further to that he had not updated his residential address with Service NSW within the required 14 day timeframe,’’ police said. *** A CANNABIS CAUTION was issued to a driver in Carlingford whose erratic behaviour caught the attention of police. “A white Audi was spotted parked in a service station that was closed and police officers observed this vehicle to be parked in an obscure position and (the driver) was continuously starting and shutting down the vehicle,” police said. “Upon speaking to the driver, police officers could smell an overwhelming scent of Cannabis emitting from the vehicle and a search of the vehicle locating a black container with cannabis inside.” Two bungling thieves have been charged with stealing a car in Gladesville after they were filmed on the stolen car’s dash cam.

Independent Ryde councillor, Roy Maggio, is the driving force behind Cork & Fork by the Riverside, after first proposing the concept several years ago and championing it ever since. First held in 2017, the showcases boutique wine from the Mudgee and Hunter Valley regions, as well as locally made spirits, craft beer, food trucks, gourmet food products, bespoke items, and great music. City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said Cork & Fork by the Riverside is the perfect day out for residents and visitors. “Winter isn’t far away, so this may be one of the last chances to get outdoors and enjoy a day in the sun in one of our most scenic parks while it’s still warm,” he said. “And with such a mouth-watering range of food and drink available, there’s no excuse to stay at home.” Food trucks include The Kraken Squid (the best salt and pepper squid), Fish and Lemonade (selling fresh seafood, including freshly shucked oysters), Let’s do Yum Cha (dumplings), American BBQ Kitchen (slowcooked meats), and The Gnocchi Way, to name a few. Beverage suppliers include Elbourne Wines, Molly’s Cradle, Iron Gate Estate, Savannah Estate, Peterson’s Wines, Mr Black, Unexpected Guest Distillery, Akasha Brewing Co, Six Strings Brewing Co, plus many more. There’s also plenty of fun for the whole family, including kids’ craft activities, pony rides, face painting and IT’s TIME to eat, drink and be merry as Cork & Fork by the Riverside - one of City of Ryde’s most anticipated annual events - returns to Kissing Point Park, Putney, on Sunday 21 May from 10.00am-4.00pm. Wednesday 10 May, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7 /CityofRyde www.ryde.nsw.gov.au Customer Service Centre 1 Pope Street, Ryde (within Top Ryde City shopping centre) Locked Bag 2069, North Ryde NSW 1670 P: 9952 8222 E: [email protected] Your City News AUSLAN STORY TIME Last week it was my great pleasure to meet our new partners Deaf Connect ahead of a very special new program for Deaf and hard-of-hearing (HoH) children in our community that’s going to be trialled at North Ryde Library from July. Council is working in collaboration with Deaf Connect to establish the Auslan Story Time trial program which will enable groups of children to have books read to them in Auslan, the primary form of communication for Deaf and HoH people in Australia. Auslan interpreters will team with our library staff to bring specially chosen books to life, giving these children an experience that’s both educational and joyful. This trial program is an excellent fit with the guiding principles of City of Ryde Libraries where we provide inclusive and welcoming spaces that inspire social, recreational, creative, and learning experiences for our diverse community. VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARDS I’m looking forward with great anticipation and delight to the 2023 City of Ryde Volunteer Recognition Awards, which are being held on Thursday night, 11 May. This is a terrific opportunity to salute our community’s many unsung heroes – those who give their time, their resources, and their labour simply for the joy of helping other people. I was proud to be part of the judging panel and, believe me, it was not an easy task to find winners in the individual, group, and young volunteer categories given the extremely high calibre of each and every entry. NET ZERO TRANSITION There is an urgent need to act now to reduce the impacts of climate change and City of Ryde is part of the push for a sustainable future. Developing a Net Zero Emissions Pathway and adopting a Net Zero target by 2035 for corporate emissions and by 2040 or sooner for the community proves our commitment to reduce emissions. As part of that commitment, Council is hosting a free breakfast seminar at Macquarie University Incubator on Tuesday 16 May between 8.00am - 9.30am for businesses to learn from industry leaders about how to accelerate their transition to net zero emissions. There will be discussions about how an effective engagement and transparency across the whole value chain supports achieving strategic sustainability goals and lowers business climate risk profiles. Kim Toyer-Uttley P 9816 8105 M 0408 439 837 HAPPY For those who cannot spend special day with mum A mother leaves an indelible mark on their daughters and sons and Mother’s Day should include opportunities to honour and remember those who have died. It was the reason the first Mother’s Day was first created by Anna Jarvis in 1907. Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) is encouraging everyone who will experience the joy of spending time with or speaking to their mum this Mother’s Day to think of those who can’t. MDA Co-Founder and Manager of Community Engagement, Eloise Baker, says a small gesture can make a big difference. “Grief cannot be fixed, and no one needs to try to,” Eloise said. ”Reach out and send a message or give someone an opportunity to say their mum’s name and perhaps share a memory.” This year MDA is proud to have created the Mother’s Halo Cyclamen label – A plant that symbolises femininity, devotion, and ever-lasting love, featured in the paintings of Leonardo DaVinci. The Mother’s Halo Cyclamen will be widely available in independent supermarkets, garden centres and online – with 20 cents from every plant donated to Motherless Daughters Australia. Co-founder and Executive Officer of MDA Danielle Snelling says the bright, robust blooms are a wonderful alignment with all mothers. “The Mother’s Halo Cyclamen is a beautiful way to honour a mum. Gift one to yourself, or a friend and if you’re lucky enough to be able to give one to your mum, know that you are supporting someone else missing theirs,” Danielle said. Mother loss has a life altering impact particularly on girls and women. ABS data reveals that 3.9 million Australian women have experienced mother loss; 1.2 million of those have experienced mother loss before the age of 44. MDA is a not for profit, national organisation that offers programs, connection and a space that allows them to share their grief, happy memories, and bittersweet milestones. Tips on how to find or offer comfort on Mother’s Day can be found at: www. motherlessdaughters.com.au ALL MOTHERS wear halos, many also have angel wings and Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) believes all of them should be celebrated – especially on Mother’s Day.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. ALEXANDRA BRADBURY GYMNASTICS Alexandra (Lexie) began her ca- reer at Five Dock Leisure Centre in 2016 at the age of seven, before moving to Gladesville Gymnastics in 2018. She displays natural talent in her discipline of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, but is also hard-working and self-motivated, according to Gladesville Gymnastics Club coach Kris Ironfield, who nominated her for a Sports Star award. “Lexie enjoys the comradery of her teammates and encourages them to strive for their personal best,” Ms Ironfield said. “She is a role model for our younger gymnasts and willingly assists them whenever possible, especially at in-house competitions and special events. “Lexie trains 10 hours per week and has managed to juggle the challenge of transitioning to high school last year.” She said that with Lexie’s own high expectations and commitment to both her academic and sporting pursuits, it was a challenge for her. “She reduced her training load to assist with this, as well as to help manage an ongoing back injury,” Ms Ironfield said. “Throughout her injury Lexie displayed determination and self-motivation, often working independently through her exercise program when specific training skills weren’t achievable.” Despite the challenges, Lexie enjoyed success in the 2022 season, competing in Level 6. This was all the more impressive after her previous two years of competitions had been cancelled due to COVID restrictions. At the NSW State Championships - where 160 gymnasts competed from the two Metro Zones and the Country Championships - Lexie finished third overall, placing first on floor, 3rd on bars and 4th on vault. The top gymnasts from the trials were selected to be part of ‘City’ or ‘Country’ where in age-based pairs, their scores were combined to find the top pairs. “Lexie and her teammate won gold and assisted ‘City’ with being the overall champions,” Ms Iron- field said. “This year, Lexie has moved into Level 7 and she is looking forward to competing ‘optional’ routines, as she continues to work hard to progress her skills. “We are very proud to have Lexie in our Senior Squad and are hop- ing that she has another successful competition season.” ETHAN MOOS WHEELCHAIR RACING TWENTY-YEAR-OLD Ethan Moos is a rising star in wheelchair racing and has been selected in the Australian team to compete later this month at the ParAthlet- ics Grand Prix 2023 at the Sport Arena Nottwil, Switzerland. He was nominated for his Sports Star award by athletics coach Glen Lebeau at Wheelchair Sports NSW, which is based in the City of Ryde. Born with his disability, Ethan later in his life discovered wheel- chair racing and hasn’t looked back. He was on a remarkable progression trajectory, until he needed major surgery in 2021 (spinal fusion). “When he came back after near- ly one year of recovery, he had to face adversity, challenges and a race crash, but he never gave up,” Mr Lebeau said. “The last 18 months have been very hard and challenging for Ethan: his chair position has changed and his equipment need- ed to be adapted. “However, his commitment and training ethics are now seeing him return to top form with, for exam- ple, a 5th place in 100m event at the 2023 Australian Open Cham- pionships.” He’ll be competing in his first international event in Switzerland alongside some of the best com- petitors in wheelchair racing, inBy Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Wheelchair racers Ethan Moos ☐ Alexandra Bradbury shows off her winning medals cluding Paralympic dual gold medalist and TWT Ryde Sports Foundation (RSF) Sports Star of the Year 2019 Madison de Rozario or Marcel Hug. “In terms of community, Ethan mentors the young athletes coming to the wheelchair racing program and is on his way to become a bigger star,” Mr Leb- eau said. NICHOLAS PLATONOV JUDO FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Epping Boys High School student and Marsfield resident Nicholas Platonov is a junior star in the sport of Judo. A member of the Budokan Judo Club Australia, he was nominated for a Sports Star award by the Club’s Head Coach, Kerrye Katz. 2 times Australian National Judo Champion (2019 and 2022) and NSW Junior Boys Competitor of the Sydney FC live to fight another day in A-League Finals Series Wanderers’ Morgan Schneiderlin notched a penalty in the 39th minute after the ball deflected into the armpit of Alex Wilkinson to lead at the break. Le Fondre forced Thomas into a fantastic save early in the second half as the Steve Corica’s Sky Blues dominated proceedings. Robert Mak levelled for the Sky Blues in the 70th minute controlling a Wanderers defensive header before drilling the ball into the corner off the post. Ten minutes later Le Fondre struck the decisive goal heading home Robert Mak’s left wing corner, to send Sydney FC through and the Wanderers crashing. In a bit of post-match controversy, midfield maestro Milos Ninkovic - who defected from the Sky Blues to join the Wanderers last season - entered the Sky Blues dressing room to congratulate his former team mates, but was physically removed by coaching staff after an exchange with Corica. Corica downplayed the incident as an issue that was just between him and Ninkovic. The Sky Blues now progress to the Semi Finals and as the lowest-ranked finalist, they’ll face Premiers Melbourne City across two legs on Friday night at Allianz Stadium and then away on May 19 at AAMI Arena on May 19. Sydney FC have extinguished the Championship hopes of cross-town rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, outplaying and defeating them 2-1 in the first ever A-League Finals Series clash between the two clubs. ☐ Milos Ninkovic being physically removed from the Sydney FC dressing room after Saturday night’s match Adelaide United cruised past Wellington Phoenix with a 2-0 win at Coopers Stadium on Friday night and will face second-place finishers Central Coast Mariners over two legs. BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers on track for Grand Final Glory! It is the second week in a row the Tigers proved too hot to handle after we dispatched the reigning premier Panther Pets last week and we’re in top form to roast the Bunnies at Olympus Stadium this Saturday. Tim Sheens has every player fired up for the Grand Final charge and the side is the real deal in every position on the field. But the most impressive part of the Tigers’ victory was the massive and vocal ten to one turnout of Tiger fans in Bananabender Land. We are the best supported rugby league team in the world and our passionate fans know this is our year to win the Grand Final. This Saturday’s classic game against the Bunnies - arguably the second best supported team - is already a sell out and if you can’t make it to the game the next best thing is to enjoy it on the Big Screen at the Tigers’ Den at Club Ryde, the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club or the Sackville Hotel in Rozelle. It pays to get there early as our fans were on their feet cheering after only five minutes on Sunday when five eighth Brandon Wakeham opened the scoring with a penalty goal. Just seven minutes later a line-break from winger David Nofoaluma set up half back Luke Brooks’ for a cross-field kick that landed in the waiting arms of the versatile Starford To’a for our first try. David then scored a try of his own as he received a great pass from rookie fullback Jahream Bula and ran over three Sinners’ defenders to score in the 22nd minute. Brandon converted the try from the sideline and David, Jahream and Junior Tupou put paid to any chance of a Sinner’s comeback with several try-saving tackles.. More individual brilliance from Brandon and Luke put the Tigers on the attack throughout the second half when prop forward David Klemmer sent Jahream through the defensive line backed up by a strong run to the try-line from Junior to seal the win with just 15 minutes of the match remaining. In their post match conference Tim and captain Api Koroisau named Jahream Bula as the outstanding Man Of The Match and Api said the brilliant young fullback has given the team new confidence and a match winning edge. Tim is especially thrilled by Jahream’s ability to make try-saving tackles on opponents twice his size as this inspirational youngster has all the hallmark qualities of a future NSW representative player. .For the second consecutive week, the Tigers completed an impressive 90% handling rate with nine players running for over 100 metres. Veteran Alex Twal led the tackle count with 44 hard hits that a number of Sinners will feel for weeks to come. Saturday’s match against the Bunnies kicks off at 3pm. SEE YA THERE! THE TIGERS campaign for Grand Final Glory is right on track after a magical Magic Round 18 points to 16 win over the Sinners in Brisbane on Sunday. ☐ JAHREAM BULA the Tigers inspirational young fullback was acclaimed Man of the Match, pictured above, and below the huge crowd of mainly Tigers supporters and fans at Brisbane’s Magic Round on Sunday.
