Hi Boys and Girls, This week we will be taking the Life Education van to West Ryde Public School. See you in class... WIN, WIN, WIN with TWT! ☐ Hunters Hill Theatre’s last production of the year, The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race, which premiered on November 17 at Club Ryde Father Martin’s Musings People of self interest I well remember a former Australian Prime Minister say these words based on his acquired experience; “I have learnt that if you ever want to implement a policy make sure that it contains a lot of self-interest for people as I reckon then it is a sure winner!” There is a story where two mothers were at the school bus stop and they both sent their sons away for a two week excursion. In as many words the younger mother said to the older experienced mother how she just wanted her dear little boy to respond to the letters she was planning to send him every day. The older experienced mother casually said: “I can assure you that you will get a quick response if you send him a letter and tell him that there is $10 in the letter and then “accidentally” forget to include the money. I did this and the next day I got a letter back mainly to tell me what I forgot to include.” This could well be the point that Jesus of Nazareth is making when he once said; “that the children of this world are more astute in dealing with their own than are the children of light.” (Luke Chapter 16, verse 8) Father Martin Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain in Sydney. For many years, it has been a tradition in Australia that the first Tuesday in November sees the running of the Melbourne Cup it’s often called “the race that stops the nation”. Abandoned cat needs love Mateo Pussycat is currently available for adoption from Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals, which recently rescued him. “This sweet, happy fluffy kitten was probably adopted on impulse during lockdown and when he grew up to be a handsome, but not quite so cute cat he was just put out in the garden,’’ the team at the World League said. “He languished there for a while and now the humans don’t even want to look after him there so he has come to us frightened, brokenhearted and in desperate need of a loving home to give him back his life. “Are you the person who could shower him with love while being patient as he recovers from his past disappointments?” To adopt Mateo phone 9817 4892 or email [email protected]. “Mateo needs you and can go on to be a marvellous companion and addition to your life,’’ the team said. This week’s Cat Of The Week needs love and affection after being abandoned by his owner. Penny upsets the potato cart when she learns the prize money is $1,000 for men and just $200 for women! The play is inspired by real events in the Southern Highlands - you can guess where! Local mums hold weekly vigil The mums say their demonstration is not political or religious and is driven by a shared sense of responsibility to protect innocent lives caught in the conflict. They said their only aim is for Mr Albanese to back the ceasefire call which last week gained more than 40,000 signatures from Australian medical professionals and was tabled in Federal Parliament on Thursday. “We are uniting our voices with millions of mothers worldwide who refuse to accept the perpetuation of these horrors and believe the time for a ceasefire is now.” – Paz Roman from Mums for Palestine said. Dulce Munoz from Mums4Refugees said more mums and children from the Inner West and Canada Bay are welcome to join the vigil, which will be held at 10am each Thursday. “We cannot remain silent in the face of this tragedy because every child lost is a profound and irreparable loss to humanity,” she said. The local mums’ vigil coincides with community vigils that call on the terrorist group Hamas to release the Israeli hostages, including a children’s kite flying event in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs on the weekend. A group of young mums and their children from across the Inner West and Canada Bay are holding a weekly vigil outside the Marrickville Office of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to urge him to support worldwide calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. ☐ Aniela Pepe and Paz Roman are among mums hosting a peace vigil outside the Prime Minister’s Office. Eastwood parish donates loaves and clothes to Ugandan children Recent aid includes more than 200 loaves of bread, clothing and two computers. “Parishioners, friends and family donate once a year to buy maize flour and (the children) get maize porridge,’’ Marisa Pongan from the parish community said. “Some parishioners gave children’s clothes and the poorest of the poor each got a new outfit, it was very moving. “Two hundred toys also came that had been discarded and left sitting in Vinnies stores and we hope they will be set up in a new Toy Library.” Aid for the Ugandan children comes from the sale of “Cuppa” books written by Catholic hospital chaplain Father Martin Maunsell, who contributes a weekly column in this newspaper. “The proceeds from the sale of Cuppa3 books will go towards renovating two nursery rooms,’’ Marisa said. More than $6000 has also been raised through sales of Fr Martin’s books for classroom renovations and a new toilet block. The schools’ founder, Fr Fabius Kisembo Bainakanaama has developed close ties with the Eastwood parish and his school now has 650 students. This week we have no problem choosing who heads This Week’s Birthday Honours List only how to name this week’s recip- ient turning 104 years today because he was christened Kevin at birth but changed his name to Ken when he enlisted in the RAAF during World War Two because there were too many Kevins! ☐ Ken celebrating a century at Putney Tennyson Bowling Club in 2019 and, below last year, proudly wearing his bowling club gear. So let’s call him Ken to please him! Ken came to prominence in TWT Territory when he started playing lawn bowls at Gladesville Sporties at 92 and then at Putney the last eight years until both clubs closed bowls. Many of the Putney bowlers have chosen to go to North Ryde RSL Club. Ken played in Putney’s top grade 4’s as a lead in 2017 and still enjoys playing twice a week. His wife Iona passed away three years ago at nearly 101 and Ken now lives with his son Warren at Tennyson Point. Ken has been an avid surfer and windsurfer, life saver, snorkellar, scuba diver, at up to 80 years of age. He has an interesting history of flying as a Squadron Leader in World War Two with the RAAF in the Middle East and Malta, and later Papua New Guinea versus Japanese and later in Korea. Ken became one of the RAAF’s most experienced instructors at Point Cook, Victoria and has remained an active pilot. Described on aviation blogs as “Albert Einstein in a spitfire” the octogenerian flying ace who served in World War Two as a fighter pilot and in Korea as a squadron commander is still very active. Ken retired from the RAAF as a Group Captain, joined the civil aviation sector teaching and examining student pilots for the past 40 years. He is now an honoured member of Gladeville RSL.

4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 22 November, 2023 HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Revamping our street signs Council has needed to update our signs for many years and I am happy to report we have now completed our Street Sign Renewal Project, with the installation of around 350 newly-designed street name blades. Not only do the new black and white blades compliment existing public spaces, they also provide a fresh easy-to-read look, helping to enhance accessibility and wayfinding throughout Hunters Hill. This project also helps to address any discrepancies or outdated signage, creating a visually appealing and consistent signage system. With this initiative, residents and visitors can have a safer and more pleasant experience while on our local roads. We look forward to delivering many more of these projects that improve and enhance our public spaces. Save the Date for Carols A perennial favourite and a staple in the Hunters Hill community’s calendar is around the corner – Carols in the Park! Carols in the Park will again take place on the first Sunday in December, so set aside 3 December from 5pm at Boronia Park in your diaries. There will be entertainment from local acts, live music, food trucks and market stalls on offer, as well as a visit from Santa and his helpers. The night will be capped off with our fireworks display – the finale to this ever-popular community event. Our Carols is always a great way to kick off the Christmas holidays and relax with family and friends. So, make sure to save the date for this fun and family-friendly event! Be Asbestos Ready Exposure to asbestos poses serious health risks to both our community and natural enviStreet signs are an essential local amenity that we very seldom think about in our day-to-day lives. Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT ronment. Although not in use for many years, it is not uncommon to find the remnants of Asbestos in unlikely places around your property - walls, bathrooms, ceilings, floors, laundries, kitchens, roofs, fences gardens and garages. National Asbestos Awareness Week, which is being held 20-26 November 2023 reminds tradespeople, home renovators and DIYers to Be Asbestos Ready when completing home renovations or maintenance, and provides vital information on how to safely manage asbestos. If you’re intending to renovate or make repairs around the home, it is important to plan ahead and start by contacting a licensed asbestos professional to protect your health and the people around you. For more information on managing asbestos safely, visit www.asbestossafety.gov.au. An urgent appeal for donations Some of their best work is seen in All Saints’ Anglican church, Hunters Hill, a church designed by colonial architect, Horbury Hunt. The east window (the Te Deum), installed in 1889, had been Lyon & Cottier’s main exhibit in the Centennial International Exhibition of 1888 in Melbourne; it was greatly admired and the design was adapted for Grafton Cathedral (also by Hunt). The stained-glass window was given in thanksgiving for the life of Shepherd Smith, who was the General Manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Sydney, and a prominent member of the Parish. During the windows 134 year history the window has been in place for all but a short period of World War II when it was removed and placed in a basement for safe keeping. The window has had some minor restoration in 1988. In the 1990’s some “protective glass” was added to the exterior to try and assist in its preservation. This year, as part of the restoration of the stonemasonry of the Eastern Wall, it was discovered that the window is on the verge of failure. Parts of the stained glass have buckled, and the window lead has separated from the glass. It appears that this is the result of one or two of the significant supportive stones in the window having failed, and twisting slightly. There are cracks and gaps in the stonemasonry, that only became obvious when scaffold was in place to clean and repoint the surrounding wall. The window has been urgently “pinned” to prevent further decay as we seek to raise funds, and as we schedule urgent works for January. At that time the window will be removed to be taken off site for repair by specialist heritage glazier, Rick Allen. Once the window is removed the stonemason and engineer will also assess the stonework, and determine a plan for repairs which will need to be conducted while the glass is removed. It is hoped the work can be achieved by March. The Parish needs to raise up to $250,000.00 for this work, based on conservative estimates. We have been most blessed to receive the gift of a painting from Mr Ian Hansen, local marine artist, which is valued at over $10,000.00 as a raffle prize to assist with this goal. Tickets are $50 each and limited to 200 tickets in total. They are only available at www.trybooking.com/CMZRQ. If you need assistance to purchase, please call my Parish Office (02 98172167 Tues to Friday from 9:30am to 1pm) and Clarissa will be happy to assist you to purchase online using your credit card. Donations are also possible via the National Trust (Tax Deductible), and deposited to “All Saints HH”, (Westpac 032044, Account: 683946). An email sent to [email protected] with your details will allow us to return a tax-deductible receipt. There is also further information about the overall restoration of All Saints at www.aphh. com.au/all-saints/. Michael Armstrong is the Reverend of Hunters Hill’s Anglican parish. By Reverend Michael Armstrong of Hunters Hill John Lamb Lyon and Daniel Cottier established the firm of Lyon, Cottier & Co in Sydney in 1873 where they produced stained glass that can be found in churches and homes across Australia. Movember has a very worthwhile message Dear Sir, ‘Movember’ is a timely reminder for all of us to speak openly about men’s health. A touchy subject it may be, but a serious one. I can only speak from my own perspective and I am sure many men may agree. We are all invincible until we are not! The simple message I have to impart is this: In order to maintain your sense of invincibility, one needs to be on top of their health. My short story is this. For the past few years I have been having my regular health checks, including my PSA tests. (For those unfamiliar with the PSA term, it refers to Prostate Cancer Markers). I heard nothing back each time from the medical centre I was attending (not based in the Sydney area) and it was only by chance, after yet another check up last June, that I asked my doctor, “what were the results of my PSA last December?”. My question was met with a short silence and a referral for another PSA test. At that stage I was not overly concerned as I had faith in my doctor. The following day, the doctor rang me and sent me a referral to see a specialist. The penny dropped. The result has been three surgeries and now I am in recovery awaiting the results of a secondary biopsy taken from my lymph nodes. I will know the result in December. My simple message to you all, when you have your blood tests (men, particularly your PSA), ask your doctor to have the pathology send you a copy. NSW Health provide a great service as they will provide this to you. You will note that at the end and of the report there is a warning indicating potential outcomes depending on your PSA result. You have the opportunity to act, so speak to your doctor and have the matter dealt with before it is too late. Each year, 3,500 men die from Prostate Cancer, one of the most common cancers. I told my story to a very close friend of mine when I received the results of my first biopsy; he went out and got his PSA done. He is having his biopsy this December. We are not all invincible! Keep well. JOHN (SURNAME WITHHELD) Ryde LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Let our physicists and engineers solve our economic problems Dear Sir, Einstein said that if you keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome you are mad. But that is exactly what we are doing with our interest rate rises. In my view economics is an attempt to explain the systems of the past and apply those lessons in the future, but what happens if society changes? Are the lessons then valid? I realise that it is important not to let inflation go rampant. It would be tragic if the price of bread became equivalent to a day’s wages. Where is the evidence that the inflation rate should be kept between two and three per cent? Why not between two and five per cent, or two and six per cent? We, in times past, had an up and down hilly society but now it is the Great Dividing Range. So much of the effect is felt by those people that have large mortgages and no excess money to spend. They cannot rein in the country’s general spending. This policy of 14, 15, 16 per cent interest rate rises is dividing society for minimal advantage. Are Economists the right people to solve these problems? Take a fresh look at our problem, the best problem solvers are Physicists and Engineers; so lets put 20 or 30 in a building separated from any economists and task them to solve the problems and find a more reasonable way forward. PETER ALWAY Hunters Hill Save children’s lives by being watchful around home pools! Parents are being urged to keep a constant eye on kindergarten aged children around backyard pools this Summer. Royal Life Saving Chief Executive Officer, Justin Scarr said on Monday the drowning risk triples following a child’s first birthday and 40 percent of all child drownings involve children under the age of five. “Parents need to be aware of this heightened risk and stay vigilant,” Mr Scarr saidd. “The drowning risk triples when children turn one and as they become more mobile, they are curious and unpredictable so it is vital you keep constant watch and restrict access to water.” Royal Life Saving’s Keep Watch Campaign kicked off this week with new research that shows drowning risk for young children peaks in summer, with 38 per cent of all deaths occurring between December and February. “This is the time of year to check your pool fence and gate” Mr Scarr said. “If there is a lapse in supervision, a correctly installed and regularly maintained pool barrier can prevent your child from drowning. “It is important that pools gates are not propped open for any reason, so always check you’ve locked the pool gate behind you and restrict children’s access to outdoor areas without adult supervision” The Royal Life Saving Keep Watch program promotes four actions to keep children safe around the water; Supervise, Restrict, Teach and Respond. For more information about Royal Life Saving’s Keep Watch campaign, visit www.royallifesaving. com.au/keepwatch Travellin’ Man Dear Sir, We see him here, we see him there, In Paris, Beijing, everywhere! Our Albo’s never coming home, Now that he’s got the itch to roam. I understand that the High Court ruling meant that these 84 Asylum Seekers/Non Citizens had to be released from our Detention Centres, but to release them into our Western Suburbs and into WA, without any monitoring was outrageously irresponsible and dangerous for us all. Wednesday 22 November, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 New bridge spans Parramatta River The new $19 million bridge is a 4.5 metre wide and 200 metre long structure that spans the Parramatta River between James Ruse Drive and Gasworks Bridge and is Australia’s first true diagonal arch bridge. It shifts in orientation curving from the east at the Alfred Street entry to the west at the Baludarri Drive end and gives people the opportunity to enjoy the experience of moving through the arch whether they are on the deck or passing underneath on a ferry. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said it will provide the City’s growing population with scenic connection over the river. “The Alfred Street Bridge is a distinctive new landmark for our City that will make it safer and faster for our growing community to travel throughout Parramatta,” he said. “It will cut down commute times and make it easier to connect to public transport and travel to the CBD. “It’s also an important link that will connect the community to more than 20 kilometres of pedestrian and cycling paths.” New South Wales Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said the bridge is an important connection for the Parramatta region. “I’m proud the Government could play a role in bringing this project to life, ” she said. The community will have the opportunity to name the bridge with community consultation planned for 2024. Parramatta’s Alfred Street Bridge was opened this month. Young artists receive awards The exhibition featured solo and group works created by students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and the young artists and their teachers were praised by Mayor Zac Miles for their creativity and quality work. “Hunter’s Hill Council congratulates all who have been selected to have their work hung in the Young in Art exhibition and the winners,’’ he said. Young in Art is a free-entry event that celebrates Hunter’s Hill’s commitment to art, design and creative partnerships. This year’s Junior Overall Winner is Abigail from Boronia Park Public School for her work titled: Canine Colours. Hannah from Riverside Girls High School was the Senior Overall Winner for her work titled:Watching TV on a Friday Evening The Junior Group Prize (Highly Commended) for the work titled ‘Peace’ was awarded to the Year 4 Group Project from Villa Maria Catholic Primary School. The Senior Group Prize (Highly Commended) was awarded to the Year 9 Visual Arts Class from Hunters Hill High School for the work titled:- House, Home and a Sense of Peace. Students from eight local schools across the Hunter’s Hill Municipality received awards for their art works at the Town Hall this month as part of the annual Young In Art exhibition. ☐ Some of the young artists are pictured with their awards at the Hunter’s Hill Town Hall. ☐ The new Alfred Street Bridge. Decision to cut funding for busy Eastwood Balaclava/ Blaxland Roads intersection upgrade blasted THE ALBANESE Labor Government’s decision to cut $7 million in essential funding for the Blaxland Road/Balaclava Road intersection upgrade in Eastwood, cancelling the project, has been condemned by Senator Maria Kovacic and Ryde MP Jordan Lane and their Ryde Council Liberal Party colleagues. But Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale said that while it was disappointing to lose some local funding, “two mega infrastructure projects” in the area - the Epping Bridge Widening and Macquarie Park Bus Interchange - would be going ahead. In a joint statement titled ‘Road to ruin: Labor cuts drive Bennelong to a dead end’, Senator Kovacic - who is expected to soon be announced the Duty Senator for Bennelong - and Mr Lane, slammed the federal government’s withdrawal of funding for the intersection upgrade. “This decision is part of broader cuts affecting numerous critical infrastructure projects across New South Wales, which has suffered the most significant cuts to its state infrastructure program compared to any other state in Australia,” the statement said. “After 200 days of the Albanese Government’s so-called ‘short and sharp’ 90-day Infrastructure Review, Labor has taken the axe to 17 projects in New South Wales, including significant interchanges in Western Sydney and upgrades vital to the Bennelong community. “The decision has been met with disappointment and criticism amongst local residents. The Blaxland Road/Balaclava Road intersection upgrade was a crucial project for Bennelong, designed to alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety, and get families to work and home faster.” They said the site’s exclusion from federal funding was a substantial blow to local infrastructure development at a time when the Minns Labor Government was rapidly planning more high-rise apartments in Ryde. “It beggars belief that in the same week the Labor Government is announcing 8,000 new apartments in Macquarie Park, the one road improvement project they had planned for our community is now being axed, Mr Lane said. “The residents of Ryde deserve better. We demand an immediate reassessment of this decision and a reinstatement of the promised funds for the Blaxland Road/Balaclava Road intersection upgrade.” Senator Kovacic said families deserved to drive safely and efficiently through their commute, without finding themselves stuck in the gridlock of government neglect. “Cutting funds for this vital road upgrade is steering Bennelong into a dead end,” she said. “This decision is a clear sign of the Albanese Labor Government’s disregard for the urgent infrastructure needs of our communities. “The Member for Bennelong’s lack of action on this funding cut made by his Government is a clear sign he’s not in the driver’s seat when it comes to fighting for our community.” She said Labor had been “dragged kicking and screaming” to reveal the full list of cancelled projects, but had failed to hand over the list of delayed projects, which would not be made available until December through the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook. By Anthony Stavrinos ☐ Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale, left, and Ryde councillor Bernard Purcell give the ‘thumbs up’ to a project that has retained its federal funding - the Macquarie Park Bus Interchange. (Image supplied) “This means further cuts and delays are yet to be revealed, leaving local councils, communities, contractors, and construction workers in the dark on whether their projects are going ahead any time soon,” she said. But Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, confirmed “with great relief” that two “mega infrastructure projects” would be proceeding with funding from the federal government. “Both the Epping Bridge Widening and Macquarie Park Bus Interchange project will continue to receive federal support,” he said. “The Federal Government inherited an infrastructure mess and responsibly ordered an independent review into promised projects. The independent review found that the Infrastructure Investment Program we inherited from the Liberals could not be delivered.” He said building nationally significant infrastructure involved more than issuing a press release and to ensure projects were delivered sustainably and successfully, the review recommended withdrawal of federal funding for some projects. “Unfortunately, the independent review recommended the withdrawal of funding for a state government road project in Eastwood,” Mr Laxale said. “This project was announced six years ago by the former NSW Liberal Government. “In their time, and in the Morrison Government’s time, construction did not commence.” He said he was still hopeful the project could be funded through another level of government or at a later date. Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said he was disappointed by the Federal Infrastructure Minister, Catherine King’s decision to axe the long overdue upgrade of the Eastwood intersection. “This much needed work, which was scheduled to take place in 2023, would have reduced congestion, improved accessibility to Eastwood’s town centre and improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists using this busy throughfare,” Mayor Yedelian said. But comments made by the Mayor to a television news channel on the weekend were slammed by Mr Laxale as “misleading” and “unacceptable”. “It was pretty disappointing to see the Ryde Liberal Mayor get his facts wrong on the news about the findings of this independent review,” the Bennelong MP said. “He said that ‘the only infrastructure project promised by the Federal Government was canned’ when three of the four projects promised for Bennelong are set to continue.” He said he shared Mayor Yedelian’s frustration at losing local funding, “but misleading comments are just unacceptable.” ☐ Cyclists using Eastwood’s busy Balaclava/Blaxland Roads intersection. 6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 22 November, 2023 New name proposed for Eastwood’s ‘Chinatown’ Councilor Li proposed the mostly Chinese cultural precinct be renamed - 145CT - which is the nickname given to it by many locals because it sounds similar to the way the name Eastwood is pronounced in the Mandarin language. He also spoke against using the name “Chinatown” because Sydney already has a Chinatown district. “I support a creative approach, not just copying Haymarket,’’ he told The Weekly Times. “I think people will be curious about what 145CT means.’’ A promotional campaign could be a year away and may include a promotional colour scheme and a mascot. Councillor Li’s proposal coincides with the recent creation of The Eastwood Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and Council backing for the eastern side of the Eastwood shopping precinct to be renamed Koreatown. Both shopping districts could be jointly promoted under a slogan of bringing the best of the East to the West. “Eastwood beckons locals and tourists alike and we should get behind our local businesses,’’ Clr Li said during the most recent council meeting. Independent Clr Roy Maggio said the Council should also consult the Italian and Armenian speaking communities about cultural promotion opportunities while Labor Clr Bernard Purcell has advocated for Church Street in Top Ryde to be marketed with a Persian cultural identity. Under the Li proposal, the council will partner with the Eastwood business community, local residents and other appropriate stakeholders to establish a working party which he will chair. The working party will also develop a masterplan for appropriate and inclusive signage, decorations and other public art in consultation with the community. A budget will be considered by councillors in February and there will be an official launch of the promotional project early next year. EASTWOOD’S WESTERN shopping precinct is set to get a new name under a proposal by local Liberal Clr Justin Li. Forgotten WWII medals found in Epping home John Lindley of Sheffield UK found the medals of Flight Sergeant John William Houseman which include the 39/45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal and the Australian Service Medal. Mr Lindley believes the medals had been passed on to his sister - Betty Estelle Houseman - who married the late Jim Richman and had been hidden in the house, which he purchased in 1999. “I was just stunned when these medals turned up during the renovation and I assumed they were for Betty’s husband,’’ he said. “One of the first things I thought when I found them was that it is unusual for an Australian to receive these types of (British) medals.” Mr Lindley sought advice from John Curdie OAM of the Epping RSL Sub Branch who is known to many readers for his research work at the Sub Branch Museum. Mr Curdie found that it was unusual for an Australian to receive these medals, which were awarded to Flight Sergeant Houseman who was a rear gunner in a Lancaster bomber which was shot down over Belgium in 1944. An Epping man hopes The Weekly Times can help find a family member of a World War Two bomber crewman whose medals were discovered during recent renovation work on his home in Albuera Road. ☐ A Lancaster bomber. ☐ Flight Sergeant Houseman’s medals were discovered in Epping. He was the only crew member killed. Mr Curdie discovered that Flight Sergeant Houseman was born in Clovelly in 1922 and was part of the Bomber Command in 626 Squadron. He was one of hundreds of RAAF personnel seconded to the RAF. “This would account for his France and German Star Medal,’’ Mr Lindley said. Official war records reveal Flight Sergeant Houseman’s Lancaster LM633 took off from Wickenby on the night of July 20, 1944, to attack Courtrai, Belgium and crashed with two crewmen taken prisoner and the other four evading capture. In statements from the survivors, the Lancaster was attacked by a JU 88 night fighter which caused fires in the fuselage and starboard engines. The aircraft wreckage was at Zietenacy ou Zoetenasie, approximately eight kms north west of Diksmuide. Flight Sergeant Houseman is listed as having no known grave. He was 22 years old. Rear gunners had a lesser chance of escaping a heavily damaged Lancaster and had life expectancy of only five missions. Of the 7,377 Lancasters built, 3,736 were lost during the War. John Lindley hopes a family member will read this article and collect the medals. They should contact Kathy at The Weekly Times on 9807 6666. Grant provides vital upgrades for North Ryde Library NSW Arts Minister the Hon John Graham joined City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM, Councillors and staff for a cake-cutting ceremony before a great program of entertainment, highlighted by a special performance by ARIA Award-nominated kid’s group The Vegetable Plot. Attendees also enjoyed slices of the celebratory cake, as well as stories and songs, a weavers and spinners demonstration, and drop-in activities like facepainting and kid’s craft. The State Government grant, which was awarded in March 2023, was invested into replacing the ageing bookshelves with new fit for purpose shelving, including shelving on castors. The funds also allowed for the installation of new lighter weight tables with wheels. The new shelving and furniture allow a greater flexibility and smarter use of the library space by being able to change the layout to accommodate the many different events and activities hosted throughout the year. “As you can see, this grant has provided the City of Ryde community with a refreshed and flexible library space that will greatly enhance the user experience of those who visit,” said Mayor Yedelian in his speech thanking the State Government. “Libraries are vitally important to our community and provide a wide array of services that fulfill our recreational, leisure and education needs.” City of Ryde CEO Wayne Rylands said Council was committed to creating spaces that encouraged active lifestyles and social interactions. North Ryde Library celebrated its exciting new look in style on Saturday with the official unveiling of the new shelving and layout flexibility made possible by a $100,000 NSW Public Library Infrastructure Grant from The State Library. ☐ NSW Arts Minister John Graham joined City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM; Ryde councillors and staff; and Ryde MP Jordan Lane at the cake-cutting ceremony at North Ryde Library. Our implant expert is here to work with you LIVE A HEALTHIER, HAPPIER AND BETTER QUALITY LIFE THE WEEKLY TIMES Health and Wellness BROUGHT TO YOU BY A permanent solution for missing teeth By Dr Armeen (Al) Yousef* The problem with popular options for replacing missing teeth, such as dentures and bridges, is that they are not permanent solutions. They result in further problems and damage over time. Dentures are uncomfortable for all-day wear and their bite strength is less than normal teeth which means that despite replacing the missing teeth, patients still struggle to eat their favorite foods. They constantly worry their dentures will become loose while speaking or enjoying a meal. Meanwhile, tooth-supported bridges require grinding down healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Grinding down healthy teeth compromises the overall strength and exposes the teeth to more problems in the future.‚ All-On-4 Dental Implants All-On-4 dental implants are a cost-effective and advanced technique where only four implants support an entire arch of teeth. All-on-four implants provide the most natural-feeling alternative to dentures for those suffering from loose or missing teeth. With All-On-4 dental implants, you can receive your brand new set of permanent replacement teeth in just 24 hours, not the three to four months you’d often require for conventional implants. The procedure involves placing implants into the anterior maxilla, a jaw region with higher bone density. Allowing the surgeon to angle the implants to up to 45 degrees increases support and can help overcome some bone deficiencies. Additionally, it lessens the need for a bone grafting procedure. Because of this, All-On-4 dental implants provide the highest success rate for dental implants. They are inserted directly into the jawbone and mimic the stimulation that the root of a natural tooth would provide to the jawbone and keep the bone strong and healthy. Just like a natural tooth, they avoid the bone loss that can accompany a less permanent option. For more information or for a free consultation to find out how dental implants can benefit you, call Beecroft Elegant Dental Clinic on (02) 9157 9089 or see the advertisement on this page. * Dr ‘Al’ Yousef is an experienced and highly-qualified dentist with extensive post-graduate training. The consultation involved service pro- viders and recipients, carers, community groups and residents. “It is recognised that the consequences of the demographic change will be far reach- ing and Councils need to plan and advo- cate for different needs in areas such as housing, service provision and transport,’’ a Council spokesperson said. Jock Cunningham from Putney Tennyson Bowling Club said the winners were worthy of their success. “Following the closure of our Putney Tennyson Bowling Club on October 31, we were lucky enough after the invite from NRRSL to join as a Putney Team as one,’’ he said. “In what was expected to be a close game according to the book makers turned out to be a very one sided game as right from the start Pat Davidson as lead was consistent throughout the game with some outstanding form putting Billy Jazz under pressure. “Jack Hanna followed as did Rick Marrins and finished off in style with skipper Peter Joint. “Although disappointed we agreed that the winners were worthy champions and congratulations on winning our last fours event as Putney Tennyson.” ☐ Finals Winners Peter Joint, Rick Marrins, Jack Hanna and Pat Davidson are pictured with Runners Up Billy Jasprizza, Richard Rees, Andy Rodger and Jock Cunningham. Hunters Hill’s Josh Hazlewood says World Cup cricket victory better than 2015 Australia has won its sixth ODI cricket World Cup after Travis Head’s phenomenal century delivered a six-wicket victory. Hunters Hill resident Josh Hazlewood said the victory was even sweeter than the Trans-Tasman victory over New Zealand on home soil in 2015. “I think this is bigger. Obviously, we weren’t at home in front of our home fans but I think the challenges we’ve been through (and) the last sort of couple of months coming here playing in these conditions against India… a pretty special team and getting the win on a day like this is amazing,” Hazlewood said post-match. “It’s such a great crowd, Indian fans are a second to none. “A couple (of fans) started leaving there towards the end, but an amazing crowd.” Captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl in a surprise decision, but his men backed up the call, bowling out India for 240. After a shaky start when they were 3-47, Head and Marnus Labuschagne combined for a 192- run partnership to steady the ship and get Australia over the line. Head finished on 137 while Labuschagne scored 58 not out. Glenn Maxwell hit the winning runs after Head was caught with two runs to win. “Look what it means to these players,” Ricky Ponting said in commentary as Australia’s players and staff swarmed the field. “From the very first two games of this tournament, they weren’t at their best, nowhere near their best, they had to dig deep and haven’t they done that. “The legacy of Australian teams continues in World Cups.” Head’s century came off 95 balls in a stunning attacking display, making him the third Australian to score a ton in a World Cup final, joining Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting. “What a year it’s been for Travis Head and I dare say India are probably sick of seeing him,” Mark Taylor said. “He made 163 earlier this year in the World Test Championship final to help Australia win that match and win that trophy and he’s on the verge of doing the double. “Playing beautifully, he’s not your conventional player as the commentators are talking about, he stays legside of the ball but he has a simple technique.” At 3-81 after 10.2 overs, India looked as if they could potentially put a decent score together. However, Pat Cummins dismissing Virat Kohli for 54 and making it 4-148 sent India into disarray as they managed to be bowled out for the first time in this World Cup. KL Rahul was India’s top-scorer with 66 while Mitchell Starc finished with the best figures of 3-55. Australia was off to a strong start when the first over went for 16 but there were big concerns as David Warner (7), Mitch Marsh (15) and Steve Smith (4) all fell quickly. Labuschagne and Head then swung momentum in Australia’s favour, leading the side to another World Cup victory. 16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 22 November, 2023 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers welcome more Leichhardt HQ home games - but no Sunday arvos! But not one of the Leichhardt HQ games will be played on the family favourite Sunday afternoon timeslot, long cherished by our fans. Instead we will play two Thursday night games at HQ, two Saturday afternoon games and one Saturday night game. It is the first time we’ve had no Sunday afternoon games at HQ since 2013 and only the second time in our 25 year NRL history. New Supercoach Benji Marshall said “it is a pretty tough draw, but we’ll get on with it” and he’s thrilled our regional home game will be in Tamworth - where we have a huge following - and 16 of our 24 games will be played in Sydney. The Tigers will also start the season on top of the NRL table with a bye in the first round followed by a trip to the hot air capital to play the Faders at 3pm on Saturday March 16 before our first game at HQ against the Gummies on Saturda March 23 at 7.30pm. We will only play teams who finished in the top four this season once next season but our games against 2023 Grand Finalists the Panther Pets and the Bananabenders come in consecutive weeks in Round Seven and Round Eight. The Hush Puppies, Tiddlies, Mexicans, Bondi Chicks, Kiwis and Silvertails are the other teams we’ll play once in 2024. Benji said playing this year’s top four teams only once is not the advantage it seems. He said he’s ‘’not a big believer in what happened last season will happen again” and stressed that players who “go into matches thinking they will be hard games or easy games are going to get beat.” The Frights will be the highest-ranked 2023 opponent the Tigers face in a home and away format and we’ll have two matches against the Jellies, Bennie’s Boys, the Sinners, the Bunnies, the Cowgirls, the Faders and the Gummies. Being one of only four teams which have five-day turnarounds, two will be against Bennies Boys and the Cowgirls away from home with our third short turnaround between home games at Cameltown and Leichhardt Oval against the Bunnies and the Luke Brooks’ return with the Silvertails in Round 24 and Round 25 respectively. The Tigers’ website has chosen our clash against the Gummies at HQ in Round Three as the “Can’t Miss” game of the season. Benji kicked a field goal to beat the Sharks back in 2012 and it’s also the same opponent which marked Robbie Farah’s final game five years ago. The Tigers start the 2024 season with a pre-season challenge game against the Kiwis at Apollo Projects Stadium, Christchurch on Sunday, February 18 at 2pm. On Saturday, February 24 the Tigers play the Sinners at Glen Willow Stadium in Mudgee at 8pm. Benji says the support the Tigers get from fans cannot be overestimated and can be enough to get the team over the line in tight matches - so now is your chance to become a club member, bet the MaIn-Law’s funeral fund on the Tigers to win grand final glory and reserve your copy of TWT every week. Tigers Members have until November 30 2023 to reserve their seats for the 2024 season. Phone 8741 3300 or email at membership@weststigers. com.au Our beloved Tigers will play ten home games next season with five of these home games at Leichhardt Oval HQ under the official 2024 season draw just released. ☐ Benji says the support from Tiger fans cannot be underestimated. ☐ This Tamworth family is among our many supporters in the regional township.
