Father Martin’s Musings Revealing who we are He was also a devoted husband to Annie for 73 years and a loved father to John Junior and Carolyn. What a life! In his memoirs he revealed that when he was an astronaut, he was requested to answer a 20-question personality profile. He wrote that the first few questions were easy as it asked about his gender, nationality, family status and occupation. Then the questions became more challenging as they asked about his life reactions, motivations and values. John Glenn, I thought made an astute observation when he said that we best know ourselves when we need to reflect on things like our life priorities and our reactions to sudden things that confront us. This is so often seen in life milestone events such as when our life changes with the birth of a child, a job promotion or demotion and the death of a loved one. How someone has nurtured their thoughts, habits and character is so often suddenly bought to the surface in these moments. He also makes the point that it’s often significant how a person immediately reacts to seeing us after a prolonged absence can reveal a lot. The psalmist had something to say about the above realities; “You know when I sit down and rise up and you understand my thoughts from afar.” Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital chaplain WIN, WIN, WIN with TWT! from, Happy HealthyHarold Best regards Vic Tagg Chairman, Ryde Hunters Hill and Canada Bay Life Education Hi Boys and Girls, This week the Ryde Hunters Hill & Canada Bay Life Education van is at Rydalmere East Public School and next week we’re headed to All Hallows Catholic Primary School at Five Dock. Hunters Hill exhibition opened The Museum is located at the Town Hall and the Mayor praised the Historical Society for finding rare photographs of transport in the heritage municipality. ”This exhibition shows aspects of Hunters Hill that will be new to everyone,” he said. Dean Letcher from the Historical Society said the exhibition has a strong focus on the waterfront. “Rare historical photographs and maps have been taken from the Society’s archives showing how the geography of Hunters Hill forced its people to use ferries and other water craft for travel because there were no Harbour bridges between The Heads and Parramatta until 1881,’’ he said. “This meant a trip to the city meant 20 miles of rough track or just two miles by water. “At weekends, ferries carried thousands of merrymakers to riverside pleasure grounds along the Lane Cove river even up as far as Killara and industries were sited on the harbour foreshore because it was cheaper and easier to bring heavy materials by boat.” The exhibition also depicts the changes from horses to the first cars and trucks and the effect of the electric trams. It is open weekday mornings. Hunter’s Hill Mayor Zac Miles opened the Hunters Hill Historical Society’s exhibition “Landau to Lexus – A history of Hunters Hill Transport” at the Hunters Hill Museum on Thursday night. ☐ The Lady Denman docks at Hunters Hill in 1925. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Hunters Hill Guest Column HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Secret wartime headquarters of Sir John Monash revealed There, in September 1917, battles of Polygon Wood and Hellfire Corner are decisive victories for the allies. Soldier, Tom Johns, states: “It is providence how a man got away without being blown into eternity.” I discovered this second Anzac Ridge in a Great War letter to a grieving mother whose son is killed on the Ridge, when assigned to the wrong regiment. Further letters, including from Sir William Birdwood, reveal events at the height of the conflict. A soldier stands reminiscing on Anzac Ridge as stretcher-bearers handle the aftermath around Hellfire Corner. I’d never heard of Steenwerck, but this town proves to be synonymous with secrets. Situated a few miles from Anzac Ridge, Steenwerck appears just another village in the path of the advancing German army. No references exist about any significant military importance. Soldiers, resting from the battlefront, even remark about living a charmed life in Steenwerck. This town has flown under the war radar for years, hiding in plain sight until the dramatic events of April 1918. One of Steenwerck’s major secrets is being the secluded headquarters of Sir John Monash, in charge of five Australian Divisions in Flanders. Here strategic war councils held with other Australian and Allied generals, see battle plans devised and implemented to break the Hindenburg Line. ‘Loose lips sink ships’ is a phrase wellknown during the war. If German spies discover Steenwerck’s secrets, one well-directed bombing raid would wipe out the upper echelon of several nations’ military might. The loss of their brightest generals would Anzac Ridge and Anzac Cove are names synonymous with Gallipoli in 1915, but there’s another Anzac Ridge near Steenwerck in Flanders. cause absolute chaos within the ranks who await, and rigorously follow, specific orders issued by the chain of command. Such an outcome could change the course of the war. It is vital that Steenwerck retains its anonymity. Top secret correspondence falling into the wrong hands proves disastrous when not destroyed as ordered. No wonder censors strictly forbid place names being used. The only permitted address is Somewhere in Flanders. Thousands of letters never reach their destination, ending up on the ocean floor, when submarines sink allied ships. These events are from chapters in a forthcoming book titled The Secrets of Anzac Ridge: Flanders 1917, compiled from war records and the diary of James (Jim) Armitage, last surviving war veteran on the Central Coast. Jim died, aged 100 years, at Kincumber Retirement village in 2000. On his eighteenth birthday, Jim and seven mates enlisted straight from Sydney Grammar school upon graduation. Their adventures, under Sir John Monash in 8th brigade, 3rd Division Artillery, make dramatic reading. Jim, fluent in French, is tasked to sell their surviving horses after the war. Letters from doctors, nurses, soldiers, and authorised Monash diary entries reveal their story. “The Rest Is History.” Hachette plan to release Patricia’s book on Anzac Day. Maintaining our local roads As part of our increasing efforts to maintain our road standards, we will be commencing a program of road repairs, which will cover more than 20 sections of local roadway, stretching from Ryde Road through to Franki Avenue, Woolwich. The program is expected to run for around eight weeks. This will involve heavy patching and crack sealing to repair our roads for the benefit of drivers, riders, cyclists and pedestrians. To support our program of repairs and maintenance, the NSW Government has awarded our Council a grant of more than $500,000 under the NSW Regional and Local Roads Repair Program for the delivery of these essential items. In addition to our roads program, our pavement rehabilitation works are set to commence next week, along sections of Boronia Avenue, Collingwood Street and Windeyer Avenue. This will help us improve the safety of cycling and vehicle travel across our municipality. Council has also undertaken work to help improve road and pedestrian safety around school campuses. These include new line markings for the pedestrian crossing on Mary Street near St Joseph’s College and Villa Maria Catholic Primary School. Council knows that improving the conditions of roads is a high priority for our community, and is pleased to be delivering these critical improvement programs. As a Council, we are committed to ensuring our roads are maintained to a high standard and that they are safe and functional for all in our community. Sporting facility upgrades kick off A project to improve recreational facilities at Buffalo Creek Reserve has kicked off with upgrades to its sporting infrastructure. As part of the upgrade, we are transforming the existing basketball space to a three-point hardstand court, which will provide a new and exciting dimension for games and an important training facility for local players. The upgraded basketball court will provide a safe, modern and practical space for players of all ages to boost utilisation of the reserve. Works are expected to be completed by the end of August. Stay tuned to the notifications page on our website to stay up-to-date with works happening across our municipality: www. huntershill.nsw.gov.au/notifications No room for superstars in our Matildas team Dear Sir, The Matildas played like a strong team to overcome France on Saturday and progress to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup semi finals after a thrilling and nail-biting penalty shootout which left the whole of Australia mesmerised. The previous Monday, in the Round of 16 clash with Denmark, they won 2-0 in impressive style, with or without Princess Mary’s support! Individual sports teams may need “superstars” to become successful in their local competitions but in World Cup competitions, you need a strong team to go all the way. So forget about any “superstars”, the best players have been chosen to represent Australia and every player is there to help the team win games all the way to the Final - go Matildas! MANUEL COELHO Lane Cove Natives restless over Epping Bridge proposal Dear Sir, Since time immemorial, the state seat of Epping, which forms part of the formerly safe seat of Bennelong, has been and has remained safe Liberal even after the last election. But these loyal folk are not happy about the proposal to add two lanes to Epping Bridge increasing the count from five to seven largely for the benefit of people who are just passing through. Epping station sees 12 trains an hour and much of the traffic crossing the line is suspected of coming from Macquarie Park which has three metro stations but the amount of traffic queueing for space on the three contested intersections continues to grow with the increased apartment building in the north west. The cause of the unrest is the fact when the third westbound lane is added, there is no room on Beecroft Road for the traffic to go. In the absence of the Epping state member, the former premier now on the opposition bench, Jerome Laxale, the Labor member for Bennelong will be addressing the community at the next meeting of the Epping Civic Trust at 7.30 on Tuesday 15th August at the Epping Church of Christ in Bridge Street. For the last few years, Epping’s “activation” has been at the cutting edge of the emerging vision our new premier has for much of the rest of Sydney’s stations. Politicians are inclined to see a pot of gold emerging by allowing more intensive land use, but it is not that easy when the real costs are considered. RICHARD URE Epping Fees at the new hospital car park Dear Sir, We are happy to note via The Weekly Times that the Concord Hospital is getting a new multi million dollar carpark. We sincerely hope parking fees are kept reasonably low so that average Joe citizen can park there without fear of losing hard earned money. The Hospital administrations in certain Sydney public hospital carparks charge fees thinking as if they have come to buy expensive jewellery there. I bet cardiologists around the country would have been very busy for a few days after that game!! I have - as both a player and coach been involved in penalty shootouts - they don’t get any easier to participate in or watch whether at under-12 level or in a professional league. They are nerve-wracking and unpredictable, especially for those waiting on the halfway line to be the next one to take a penalty. I have witnessed first hand some of the best and toughest players turn to jelly and refuse to take one. But I love them and it takes skill and plenty of practice to master them. They are a necessary part of our great game and it adds to the theatre. Australians once again tuned in in record numbers to cheer our magificent girls. There were record television ratings, previously unheard of in our sport. The game against France was a special moment watched and shared by our nation. People tuned in whilst travelling thousands of feet in the air. Live sites, sporting clubs, pubs and restaurants were packed with fans cheering on our Matildas. Talk about uniting our nation! (Pic: Seven News) Ryde and Hunter’s Hill expected to join Hornsby waste levy campaign Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock put out the call during last Wednesday night’s council meeting where he warned of a “looming waste capacity crisis” which will require costly additional landfill, numerous organics processing facilities and effective transport options. He said the state government’s Waste Levy brings in around $800 million dollars a year - with only seven per cent of the income allocated to local waste management services - with the rest of the cash spent other government projects. “We urge the NSW Government to support us by investing the revenue from its Waste Levy to build the waste infrastructure needed to meet the growing pressures of population growth, loss of landfill capacity and a lack of competition in the sector and to educate and support communities to reduce waste,” he said. “We also invite our fellow Sydney councils to work collectively with us to reduce waste, improve environmental outcomes during waste process- ing and finding sustainable solutions for residual waste.” City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM told The Weekly Times he will back the Hornsby campaign. “We will support Hornsby one hundred percent,’’ he said. “That Waste Levy is a big problem for us and we can’t continue to pay that much and get so little in return for it.” Hunters Hill Mayor Zac Miles has previously expressed concern that his council is paying the Waste Levy and the Emergency Services Levy - with little or no return - at a time when his council is cutting costs and making productivity savings. Confronted with the similar challenges, Lane Cove Council recently made the controversial decision to introduce a Sustainability Levy for 2023 and 2024 that brings in $1,024,137 in extra rates of which $74,700 is specifically earmarked for waste services. The City of Parramatta is funding a long term, multi-million dollar Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy - that encourages recycling and better management of waste disposal - but even it acknowledges The Mayors of Hunters Hill and the City of Ryde will back a call from the Mayor of Hornsby to lobby the state government to pay some of the councils’ waste removal costs from the Waste Levy it charges them. ☐ Waste removal in the Hornsby Shire is a massive financial burden and needs state government funding says Mayor Philip Ruddock. the problem won’t go away. “We are generating more waste than ever before,’’ the City of Parramatta website warns. “This process of consume and dispose is not sustainable and is having increasingly negative impacts.” Despite support from other councils, Hornsby’s campaign might not be enough to convince the state government to reinvest the Waste Levy locally. “Local government alone will not solve this fast-looming crisis and it is time to get all three levels of government dedicating the required attention and actions to ensure our communities waste is adequately managed,” Mayor Ruddock said. Vic Tagg is re-elected as Eastwood Chamber of Commerce President Anthony Ching was elected Vice President, Steve Colquhoun was elected Secretary and Treasurer, Marina Moscato was elected Publicity Officer and Hugh Lee, Dr Felix Lo, Luke Coles and Gavin McCutcheon were elected as Committee Members. At the meeting, City of Ryde Councillor Bernard Purcell gave a report from the Council and Vincent Yu spoke about the DAPA fundraiser and its 10th anniversary dinner. Edna Wilde OAM also provided an update on the Ryde Eisteddfod, while Dr Felix Lo informed the meeting of his plans to lead a campaign to petition Ryde Council for a new toilet in the Eastwood Plaza. 8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 16 August, 2023 Religious procession will open Ferragosto festival Ferragosto is Sydney’s largest Italian community festival and will be preceded by a religious procession. “Following the Italian tradition, this year’s festival will be preceded by a procession to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption along Great North Road,’’ City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said. “We are thrilled to invite our Italian community to take part in this procession, which begins at the corner of Lyons Road and Great North Road at 9:30am and will be led by Bishop Daniel Meagher.” The festival will feature free carnival rides, spectacular dance and music performances across three stages, a petting zoo, competitions, street performers and a FerraCinema, which will screen Italian movies. “Ferragosto is also a great day out for the whole family with plenty of traditional Italian food and entertainment on offer,’’ Mayor Tsirekas said. “Last year’s festival attracted record crowds and we’re expecting an even bigger turnout this year.” To find out more visit ferragosto.com.au. More than 100,000 visitors are expected at Five Dock’s Ferragosto Festival this Sunday, August 20 from 10am to 5pm. Unanimous support sought for shopping village safety audits Labor councillors will propose a motion for the safety audit at an upcoming meeting and hope their city wide safety audit appeal will be supported by the majority of Liberal councillors, who did not vote to support Labor Clr Bernard Purcell’s recent appeal for safety bollards at the Flinders Road shopping village carpark. Councillor Purcell told The Weekly Times he hopes Flinders Road shops and the Watts Avenue shops (near Midway) will be a priority of the proposed city wide audits which he wants to see focused on pedestrian safety. “To start with these bollards are a great idea to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians and they are not expensive,’’ he said. The proposed safety audits would look at council owned footpaths and parking zones as well as driver behaviour. “There are plenty of pedestrians being knocked and I’m surprised there haven’t been more pedestrians being (significantly) injured,’’ he said. “This includes pedestrians walking in front of cars and particularly pedestrians and reversing cars.” Children’s safety should also be considered, he said. Safety audits are normally recommended to councillors by local traffic committees to address a specific problem but Clr Purcell wants the city wide audit of the small villages to be a pro-active and preventative measure. “Problems come to us as a request from our traffic committee but there is so much going on it doesn’t need to look for problems,’’ he said. “I would like to see the small shopping village safety audits come back to council with recommendations from our staff.” A recent safety study of the Boronia Park shopping village identified the risk of pedestrians being hit while running across Pittwater Road and led to mid-road barriers being installed to force them to safely cross the road at the traffic lights. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM has previously stressed that safety issues should be the first and foremost priority of the council and Independent Clr Roy Maggio has previously called for a citywide audit of dangerous trees. Unanimous councillor support is being sought for safety audits of around a dozen small shopping villages across the City of Ryde. ☐ Reverse parking is a common cause of carpark accidents. ☐ Councillor Purcell would like child safety to be a focus of the wider, proposed pedestrian safety study of shopping villages. ☐ Ferragosto will be held in Five Dock on Sunday. 1. which is close to North Ryde Railway Station and Cox’s Road shopping district - is one of around three thousand Sydney sites being considered by the state government for housing, alongside a speculative target of 7,650 new homes in Macquarie Park. Councillor Jordan Lane MP gathered more than A proposal to build housing on the North Ryde Common must be smashed before it gets the go-ahead from Premier Chris Minns, Ryde MP Jordan Lane and Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said on the weekend. ☐ Ryde MP Jordan Lane and Ryde councillor Sophie Lara-Watson with locals at North Ryde Common on the weekend, giving the proposed plans for housing on the site the ‘thumbs down’; and left, with the petition against the proposal 2,000 signatures on a petition against the proposal last weekend and said he would personally present it to the Premier and introduce a motion in NSW Parliament in coming weeks. “We want to save the Common and the Hospital from development,’’ he told The Weekly Times on Sunday. Minister for Land and Property, Steve Kemper said finding new sites for housing is the government’s “top priority” but availability, suitability and compliance checks still have to be made on suggested locations. A government planning department spokesperson confirmed last week that no decisions have been made about new sites but more information will be made available at a later date. Jordan Lane said a decision NOT to build on the two North Ryde sites needs to be made immediately. “That this is even being considered is bad for Ryde,’’ he said. “Just two moments in government and Labor is already looking at more overdevelopment in Ryde, despite what it said in the election campaign.’’ The Common is maintained by The City of Ryde and is the venue for community and multicultural community events that include the annual TWT/Rotary Carols On The Common each Christmas. It gained its name from a TWT readers poll and while it is used as common land, it does not have the same traditional and legal protection that local community owned “Commons” have in England. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said Labor proposed building on the Common thirty years ago and was defeated by a community campaign. “This is unacceptable but the idea is not new,’’ he told The Weekly Times. “When Ivan Petch was the State Member for Gladesville, Labor tried to do the same thing so he headed the community opposition to it and got re-elected. “Now, again, this is a very dangerous development and we should stop it.” New South Wales Property Council Executive Director Katie Stevenson has not commented on individual sites but nonetheless praised the state government for “looking creatively” to solve the housing supply and affordability crisis.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. SOLICITORS DIRECTORY RONALD S. CZINNER & CO. The game was played in the true Putney spirit of a final with sportsmanship and a competitive attitude. A slight cross wind condition came into play as Kingsley got off to a early lead half way through the game on the 15th end leading 14/11 before Jock pegged back the last seven ends gaining 14 shots to Kingsley’s one for a final score of 25 to 15. APIA Leichhardt could clinch the the title with win at Christie Park The three nil win puts APIA four points ahead of second placed Rockdale Ilinden with just two matches remaining and with APIA odds on favourite to win against the 11th placed Spirit FC at Christie Park in North Ryde on Saturday. Rory Jordan scored two goals for the home side in the 32nd and 66th minute with fan favourite Jason Romero hitting the third goal in the 83rd minute. APIA coach Franco Parisi conceded the title is not in the bag yet, as North West Sydney Spirit play its best football at Christie Park in front of its home fans. “We look forward to North West Sydney Spirit this week and we know their qualities at their home ground,’’ he said. “They’ve proven to be one of the sides to beat at their home territory with some incredible last minute winners. “But I’m totally proud of all the (APIA) players and our club has really dug in most when it counts.” If North West Sydney is to deny APIA the title it will need to pick itself up after Sunday’s two nil loss in Rockdale. Few chances fell to the away side although it almost scored from a Matthew Cahill header just before half time. In the 70th minute a free-kick from Luiz Lobo just flew over the crossbar as the visitors desperately tried to force a way into the game. The local derby at Christie Parks kicks off at 5.30pm this Saturday. APIA Leichhardt defeated Sydney FC by three goals to nil at Lambert Park on Sunday ahead of this week’s local derby against North West Sydney Spirit FC where a win will give the Italian community club the NPL NSW Men’s Premiership title. Roy and Glen win Championship Jim Juniper from the Hunters Hill Bowling Club said it was a closely fought game. “In a gripping finish on the last end, Roy Gledhill and Glen Norris held their nerve to edge out Val Moscato and Tony Beno,’’ he said. “Roy and Glen had leapt to a 14/4 lead by the 9th end but Val and Tony fought back strongly, surging to the lead at 18/14 on the 15th. “Next it was 18-all with the lead changing twice more before Roy and Glen steadied the ship, claiming five shots on the last two ends to earn an impressive 25/22 victory in a nail-biting finish.” Jim said the game impressed spectators. “This was a scintillating game of high quality bowls that had the large gallery enthusiasti- cally involved throughout,’’ he said. The final of the 2023 Hunters Hill Bowling Club Pairs Championship was played at the club on Saturday. ☐ From left, runners-up Tony Beno and Val Moscato with Pairs Champions Glen Norris and Roy Gledhill. ☐ Hunters Hill Ladies Bowls champions Kay Saggers and Kaye Stewart. In the Hunters Hill Ladies Bowls, Kay Saggers and Kaye Stewart defeated Pam Hirst and Lyn Stephenson in a very close match to be worthy winners. Hunters Hill win Minor Premiership The title was clinched in this season’s final home game at Boronia Park with a tough fought 25 to 19 win over St Patrick’s Strathfield. Club President Luke McCormack said both teams are arch rivals and traditionally play a hard fought match. “On a day that was put together to hon- our our Life Members, Saturday was no different,’’ he said. “Hunters Hill opened the scores with a well worked try to Lewie Parfitt and a penalty goal soon after gave the Hillies a 10 point buffer.” But St Patrick’s Strathfield hit back with two tries from driving mauls and took control of the game. “A try from full back Eddie Gregory had the Hillies with their noses back in front, but not Hunter’s Hill won the Minor Premiership of the Sydney Kentwell Cup suburban rugby competition on Saturday. ☐ Hunters Hill Winger Lewie Parfitt burst down the left wing for the match winning try. (Pic: Pete Kenny/ Framing Life, Boronia Park) for long as the visitors then acted again to lead 19 to 17,’’ he said. “It was that man Lewie Parfitt who again burst down the left wing with his electric pace, scorching the St Pats defence and scoring a critical try. “This put the Hillies ahead and a late penalty pushed the margin out to the final score.’’

The young baseball player was recently been awarded the Marist College Eastwood Dili- gence and Effort award as he balances school life and a possible career in sport. “Being in Year 12, it can be challenging to balance my studies and training requirements and while I want to play as much baseball as possible I know that my education is very important.” He said Marist College Eastwood has consistently stood as one of his most ardent supporters. “My school and teachers have been so understanding and make sure I’m still engaged with my studies to keep me on track, wherever I might be in the world,” he said. Marist College Eastwood Principal Silvana Rossetti said Baden also captains the College’s AFL, Touch Football and Netball teams. “We are very proud of Baden’s achievements,” she said. “He is a wonderful role model to the younger students at the College, setting a wonderful example of hard work and dedication.” For those looking to follow in the steps of Baden’s sporting success, he has this advice. “Perseverance is key, you can’t always be at the top of your game but if you fight through the tough times and train hard, you will always get back up on top.” ☐ Baden makes a catch.

Tigers ready for grand final glory ☐ Luke Brooks scores a try off a miraculous reverse pass from Daine Laurie. Following an incredible performance by captain Api Koroisau last week, Tigers five-eighth Daine Laurie had the best game of his two year career against the Kiwis in the Land Of The Long White Cloud on Saturday. Daine superbly created two tries in only two minutes with the first coming for centre Starford To’a in the 16th minute. Moments later Daine threw the best dummy of this year’s NRL competition to split the Kiwi defence before he let loose with an incredible reverse flick pass inside to surging halfback Luke Brooks who skipped through an ankle-tap to race in and score a try in the 18th minute. BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Put Ma-In-Law’s pension fund on grand final glory for the Tigers as yet another Tiger emerged as the stand out player in last weekend’s NRL competition. Our brilliant five-eighth then scored our first try of the second half, breaking down the right side of the field in the 57th minute with young fullback Jahream Bula backing up his electrifying run. Twenty four year old Daine also made several try saving tackles around the ruck and seems to have found himself right at home in the halves after playing most of his games in the black and gold as a fullback. Supercoach Tim Sheens reckons the Tigers have found an ideal halves combination with Daine and Luke and said they are playing with “a great intensity’’ that will lift the team in the remaining six rounds. Luke described Daine’s effort as a Man Of The Match performance and said he enjoys playing alongside him in the new combination. New fullback Jahream Bula had another outstanding game as the Tigers racked up 22 points - against a team known for its defence at home - with captain Api on the money again with his pinpoint accuracy as a goal kicker. Tim also praised the Tigers Never Say Die spirit which saw Starford use his speed, power, intuition and ball handling skills to score his second try three minutes from fulltime. The Tigers played Saturday’s home game away from home because Leichhardt HQ is being used as a training venue for the Women’s World Cup and our supercoach said the decision to play the match in The Land Of The Long White Cloud earned the club the respect and admiration of people throughout Kiwi Land. But our Supercoach told me that he can’t wait to return to Leichhardt HQ next year as the Tigers build a team to win grand final glory. “With the Women’s World Cup finishing we’ll want to go back to Leichhardt a lot more and that’s the plan,’’ he said. “And we are putting together a team that will stand us, big time!”

1 BUSINESS’ NIGHT OF NIGHTS! Northern Districts businesses on show H OLLYWOOD has the Oscars and the music industry has the Grammys – but for Northern Districts businesses, the annual night of nights is Wednesday 23rd August. That’s the date of the 2023 Northern Districts Local Business Awards. Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe said: “There’s no doubt that local business owners and their staff work hard to provide the best possible service to their customers. “That’s why the annual Northern Districts Local Business Awards presentation night is always such a popular event. “It’s a glittering event that gives finalists a chance to dress up and take a break so they can enjoy an evening of entertainment, good food, relaxed chat and celebration with their colleagues and people from other businesses from around the district.” Mr Loe said being a finalist at the Northern Districts Local Business Awards presentation night was an enormous achievement. “It’s also a chance for businesspeople and their teams to reflect on their successes with a fun night out,” he said. “Making it to the finalist presentation is a great reflection on their efforts and everyone is always extremely proud to be there. “All finalists in each category are announced, with their picture shown on the big screen. “It’s heart-warming to hear the deafening cheers from the crowd as everyone celebrates the achievement of all the businesses in the room.” Today is the day when nominees for the 2023 Northern Districts Local Business Awards discover if they have made it as a finalist. Mr Loe said the high quality of all nominees had made the job of judges incredibly difficult. “The Weekly Times, which has supported the awards as media partner for many years, will announce the finalists in each category with a special feature in today’s paper,” he said. “This is a chance for customers and clients to see if the businesses they nominated have become finalists.” The Northern Districts Local Business Awards are only possible with the support of major partners, City of Ryde and NOVA Employment and support partners, The Epping Club, Macquarie Park Ryde Business Chamber, White Key Marketing and Cornerstone. “It’s with great pleasure that I congratulate all the finalists on their achievements, on behalf of the Northern Districts Local Business Awards,” Mr Loe said. “I would also like to thank the Northern Districts community for the huge support that they continue to show for their local businesses through the Awards every year. “Without them, these outstanding businesses would receive the recognition which they deserve.” For more information about the Local Business Awards, visit www.thebusinessawards.com.au.
