WIN a family pass to the Sydney Royal Easter Show Father Martin’s Musings In the American state of New Jersey an 87-year-old lady whose first name is Rose enrolled at the state university to begin studying for a law degree. When Rose was questioned by the selection board she candidly said; “In the twilight of my life I want to round off my education with a degree.” This was all the selection board needed to hear before accepting her. It was not long until Rose became known around the wider university campus, soon the sports faculty approached her to speak at their annual awards night. Rose created a sensation when upon coming to the microphone with her typed notes. She deliberately dropped them and calmly said with a big smile; “Please excuse me, I am nervous as I have had to stop drinking beer and all this whiskey is making me unsteady on my feet!” After the spontaneous laughter and applause died down Rose made this wonderful point; “There is a big difference in life between growing old and growing up as we can all grow up when we use the opportunities that come our way.” “That my friends I have learnt to grow old in body is mandatory but to grow up in life is simply an option.” Jesus of Nazareth knew what Rose meant when he said; “That the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules should be the one who serves.” (Luke Chapter 22, Verse 26) Fr Martin R Maunsell is the former parish priest of St Kevin’s Catholic parish in Eastwood. Eastwood celebrates Harmony Day The concert was hosted by Eastwood’s Differently Abled Peoples Association (DAPA), the Tzu Chi Buddhist charity and local celebrity Joey Chan and featured performers with diverse abilities from many cultural backgrounds. Harmony Day marks the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and aligns with the hosts’ values of social inclusion and harmony for people of all backgrounds and abilities. DAPA was founded by parents and young people who have a disability including autism spectrum disorder. “Our International Harmony Week activity went well and very successfully,” DAPA president Vincent Yu said. ”To our delight, there were also quite a few community leaders enquiring about our organisation’s operation, objectives and history.” The Association aims to develop its clients’ abilities and talents to achieve greater independence as well as developing and encouraging their social skills, creativity, communications and technology skills as well as their vocational skills and their adult education needs. “So often programs and services emphasise the disability whereas our new organisation seeks to take a more positive approach and emphasise the abilities and talents of the individual,” Mr Yu said. “This is reflected in the choice of name for the association and it is the key philosophy underlining our purpose.” The Tzu Chi charity is dedicated to doing good with a kind and compassionate heart, regardless of race, religion and background. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 29 March, 2023 Hunters Hill Guest Column To The POINT The service is delivered jointly by the Hunters Hill Council and the Hunters Hill RSL Sub-Branch. This is not the 100th anniversary of an event 100 years ago – it is the 100th consecutive time this event has been held!! The first service was on 24 April 1923. The origin of the “ANZAC Eve” service, as it used to be known, is not clear but almost certainly another initiative of the Mayor, William Windeyer. When we think of this it should be remembered that the first national ANZAC Day service was held on April 25 in 1927. Prior to that there had been commemorative services held under local State arrangements. As early as 1916 there had been events held in London and some States on 25 April. Mayor Windeyer was very active during and after World War One. Hunters Hill provided more volunteers, male and female, per capita, than any other municipality in Australia, and Hunters Hill provided more money to the Comfort Fund than any other municipality. In 1919 the existing Memorial Hall was built, and dedicated by the State Governor, as “The Soldiers Amelioration Centre”, another Windeyer initiative (and partly financed by him!). Only a lawyer, as was Windeyer, would have thought of calling the hall an Amelioration Centre!! The Hall is now referred to as the Memorial Hall and was accepted into the NSW State list of War Memorials in 2016. William Windeyer tried to enlist but was refused on medical grounds and threw his energy into the war effort. He had a daughter and two sons, one of whom died of wounds in Tobruk, and the other gained the rank of Brigadier. There are no records pre-1978 but we theorise that Windeyer thought of the concept of an ANZAC Day Eve service to allow retired diggers to attend a service and then get into the City on ANZAC Day in time to take part in the march. Public transport in the ‘20’s and 30’s was not at the level or variety that it is today and getting to a dawn service would have required a car. To this day the ferries don’t operate before dawn, and neither did the trams. The modern service takes the form of a short service at the Memorial Wall in the grounds of the sub-Branch Memorial Hall, followed by a short march by serving and retired veterans to the Town Hall where an ecumenical service is conducted around the Cenotaph. The march will be accompanied by the pipes and drums of The Sydney Thistle Highland Pipe Band. The service on the forecourt of the Town Hall is short, less than an hour, to encourage families with small children to attend. There is some public seating but on an important event such as this it’s wise to be early. This year the Honoured Guest will be the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beasley AC KC, and the Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker will be General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC(Mil) CVO MC (Retd) and Lady Cosgrove. Supper will be served in the Hunters Hill RSL Memorial Hall in Alexandra Street on conclusion of the service. All are welcome. The services will commence at 6.30 pm and conclude at 8.30 pm. Rod Stewart is a long serving member of the Hunters Hill RSL Sub Branch. Celebrating a Centenary of Anzac On April 21, 2023 Hunters Hill will celebrate the 100th consecutive holding of the evening service originally held on the eve of Anzac Day. by Rod Stewart With this in mind, Council is committed to delivering and improving our waste and recycling collection services, with more insights into how we treat and process what we collect. We want to ensure our residents can manage their waste as easily as possible, ensuring that it is both cost-effective and good for our local environment. As part of our well-established partnership with RecycleSmart, managing waste for Hunters Hill residents has become much easier. This service is free when you have a subscription or else it costs just $5 a bag; either way, you can have your hard-to-recycle waste and ‘non-bin’ items collected from your doorstep. RecycleSmart has proven to be a very popular household collection service in our local government area. Hunters Hill residents have successfully kept 5300kgs of resources in circulation, we have had 1250kgs of e-waste sent to recycling and 2500kg of clothes donated to local charitieshelping significantly to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. It’s a great community effort from our residents and local businesses and we are looking forward to our continuing work with stakeholders all over Hunters Hill to boost our sustainability credentials and deliver our vision for a cleaner future. RecycleSmart is also assisting Council in renewing our soft plastics collection in Hunters Hill. The collection of soft plastics has now thankfully resumed following the pause in national soft plastic recycling late last year. Along with these plastics, clothes and e-waste, residents can now also have white HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles polystyrene collected from their doorsteps, as part of a collaboration with Foamex, an expanded polystyrene (EPS) recycler. To learn more about RecycleSmart and other ways to reduce, recycle and reuse waste, visit our website: www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/ reduce-recycle-reuse-waste. Learn about clean energy Our Council will be among organisations taking part in a Clean Energy Community Fair on Sunday (2 April) aimed at informing and educating residents of North Sydney. The event will include information stalls and panel discussions aimed at helping residents to lower electricity and fuel costs, reduce carbon emissions and make the switch to cleaner energy. The event will be held at Norths, 12 Abbott Street, Cammeray, on Sunday, from 10am to 3pm for this educational, family-friendly event. For more information and to register, visit events.humanitix.com/clean-energy-community-fair. Clr Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Hunter’s Hill Council is aiming to work with our residents to improve recycling habits and to make sure a greater focus is placed on sustainably both at home and within our local businesses. Recycling Smarter Dear Sir, There was anger and disbelief at a community meeting to discuss a new LEP and DCP for Hunter’s Hill LGA earlier this month. The only thing residents wanted addressed was how the NSW Government and the Council could fail to consult the community about a new SEPP to be gazetted on 26th April which will change the heritage and garden nature of Hunters Hill. This meeting was held only 10 days before the State Election where our local member, the (former) Minister for Planning was asking for another term to represent us. He clearly wasn’t representing us when he introduced the legislation for this SEPP LETTERS to the Editor TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Anger and disbelief over planning matters to Parliament. Nor apparently did he consult with Hunter’s Hill Council, according to the Liberal Party Mayor Zac Miles. This is despite other Councils, like Mosman, getting a heads up about the SEPP that enabled them to make changes for their LGA. The mystery deepens about how Mosman knew and Hunters Hill, part of the (former) Minister’s own electorate, didn’t. ANNETTE GALLARD Gladesville Minns urged to give Hunters Hill time over rezonings The previous government policy is due to come into force at the end of April and the Council hopes the Labor government will grant it time to consult the local community about changes that strengthen its Local Environment Plan and Development Control plan to stop the policy being imposed. Mayor Zac Miles told Councillors at Monday night’s meeting there has already been correspondence on the issue between senior council staff and Department of Planning bureaucrats and he is confident there will be a deferral. Independent Clr Ross Williams unsuccessfully put forward a motion to have the correspondence made available to the public and to other relevant bodies. “I’ve said time and time again that this council operates with a veil of secrecy,’’ Clr Williams said. Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Krassoi (Ind) said councillors had been aware of the government policy but it had been put aside because of a heavy workload on councillors last year. “You think that because you are being kept in the dark, there is something sinister going on,’’ she responded to Clr Williams. Ratepayers who spoke at the meeting stressed the important role of the LEP and DCP to protect Hunters Hill’s character, identity, heritage and building height restrictions. The Council decision to write to the government - not to a new planning minister - reflects concern that a new minister may not be sworn in by the April deadline. Hunters Hill Council will write to the new Minns Labor Government to request an 11th hour stay of execution to a previous government policy that allows multi-storey development, boarding houses and motels to be built next to village shopping centres. Hunter’s Hill pushes on with divisive Figtree Park plan Councillors voted by five votes to two on Monday to pursue a fresh proposal with independent councillors Ross Williams and Zac Miles voting against the idea. The five councillors’ preferred option is to have an amenities block, a picnic area and a playground at the site without the removal of trees or other vegetation. “This is a once in a generation opportunity,’’ Mayor Zac Miles said. “And I will be proud to walk through a new park that will be an integral part of the Hunters Hill Village.” There has been community speculation the new park could be part of a much larger development strategy for the Gladesville Road based precinct but General Manager Mitchell Murphy stressed such speculation is baseless. “There is no endorsed property strategy..it doesn’t exist!’’ he said. Independent Clr Ross Williams said the new park idea is not fit for purpose and wants the money spent on the former Henley Bowling Club or The Priory while ratepayer Maureen Flowers would like to see the money go to wipe out the council’s two million dollar operating deficit. A controversial proposal to build a $4.7 million new park on the site of Figtree Park at the Hunters Hill Village will be pursued despite two proposals being recently rejected by the Hunter’s Hill Planning Panel. ☐ The Defenders of Figtree Park group recently appeared on A Current Affair. Speaking at the Monday night meeting, Defenders of Figtree Park spokesman David Salter said this the new park is not “a consent development but a contempt development” and The Greens’ candidate for Lane Cove Heather Armstrong said nobody in the community wants it. Liberal Clr Julia Prieston disagreed and took a shot at the Defenders of Figtree Park whose cause was featured in TWT and on TV. “We can’t ignore the overwhelmingly positive speakers (for the proposal) just because they didn’t appear on A Current Affair,’’ she said.

Wednesday 29 March, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Labor’s Chris Minns is the state’s 47th Premier Chris Minns has been sworn in as the 47th premier of NSW in a ceremony held at Government House on Tuesday. Presiding over the ceremony, NSW Governor Margaret Beazley encouraged the new government to “savour” the moment before MPs were officially sworn into their roles. “This moment is a unique moment in your life and I’m going to suggest you savour it because premier-elect, ministers-designate, it’s not going to last very long,” she said. “(It’s) a moment that gives us an opportu- nity to just stop and think, as a community, what this moment means.” At the close of the ceremony, she repeated her point: “This is a time to relax and enjoy before the period of really, really hard work starts again.” Senior member of Labor’s interim ministry were sworn in, including Prue Car as deputy premier, Daniel Mookhey as treasurer and Penny Sharpe as Executive Council vice-president. Senior ministers Jo Haylen (transport), Ryan Park (health), and Michael Daley (attorney-general) were also sworn in. Mr Mookhey is the first Australian minister to be sworn in on the Bhagavad Gita, a holy text significant to Hinduism. Ms Sharpe is also the first lesbian minister in NSW. After the ceremony, Mr Minns reiterated that his team were ready to “hit the ground running”. “With the interim government now in place, we know there’s a huge responsibility on our shoulders and work starts today,” he said. Ms Car said it was “an honour” to be sworn in to the interim ministry and reiterated Mr Minns’ comments. “We know that there are seats still yet to be determined, but what we do know is the people of NSW sent us a clear message on Saturday, and they want us to get straight to work on some really important challenges for NSW ahead,” she said. Tuesday’s ceremony gave insight into some of the new ministries under the Minns government, including a portfolio for the Illawarra and south coast that will be held by Mr Park. As it stands, the count has yet to reveal whether Labor will lead with a majority or minority government. The party has 45 seats but needs 47 to govern outright, with Kiama, Terrigal, Miran- da, Ryde, Holsworthy, Oatley and Goulburn still in play. ☐ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with Premier elect, Chris Minns, wife Anna and two of his sons, after claiming victory at the Novotel Brighton-Le-Sands on Saturday night. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) Ryde result remains on a knife’s edge RYDE REMAINED in limbo as The Weekly Times was going to press on Tuesday afternoon, with Liberal Ryde councillor and former mayor, Jordan Lane trailing Labor’s Lyndal Howison by 134 votes. On a Two Candidate Preferred (TCP) basis, Ms Howison had attracted 50.28 per cent of the vote, while Clr Lane was on 49.72 per cent. With several thousand postal votes still to be counted, sources from both major parties told The Weekly Times they expected the contest would go “down to the wire”, with both also understood to have placed significant resources into their postal campaigns. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was an early visitor in Ryde on polling day, suggesting the Labor Party’s intel had accurately identified the seat was in play. Lord Mayor claims Parramatta The seat of Parramatta has returned to the Labor fold after more than a decade in the hands of the Liberals, with City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna Davis winning the seat on the weekend. It’s been more than a decade since the seat was last held by Labor, with Tanya Gadiel the member between 2003 and 2011. Sitting Liberal MP Geoff Lee retired at this election, making the task of keeping the seat in the hands of the party all the more difficult given his popularity and personal following. The Liberals didn’t make it easier, preselecting first-time candidate Katie Mullens just weeks out from the contest. Davis has achieved a swing of more than 20 per cent in the seat an extraordinary result that transforms Parramatta into a safe Labor seat. It comes as Labor prepares to emerge from the political wilderness in New South Wales with its leader, Chris Minns sworn in as Premier. It is somewhat of a landslide victory with the results for the Coalition worse than many were predicting. Ex-Premier retains seat Outgoing Premier and Epping MP Dominic Perrottet has retained his seat as he prepares for a spell in Opposition in NSW. With 62 per cent of the Epping vote counted, Mr Perrottet had attracted 54 per cent of the vote on a TCP basis, with lower profile Labor challenger Alan Mascarenhas on 46 per cent. At the 2019 poll, Mr Perrottet had achieved a 62.4 per cent TCP result against Mr Mascarenhas. Mr Perrottet praised Mr Minns, saying he would make “a fine 47th Premier of NSW”. “I believe he will lead with the same decency and the same integrity that he has led with so far,” Mr Perrottet said. Mr Perrottet said the Coalition had delivered significant change over the last 12 years in New South Wales. “I am very proud to lead by Liberal team, but I stand on the shoulders of those who come before me – Barry O’Farrell, Mike Baird and Gladys Berejiklian,” he said. “Their legacies are strong and New South Wales is a much better place for their leadership.” Perrottet confirmed he would step down as Liberal leader with Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, who came dangerously close to losing his seat but appears to have held on as counting continued, emerging as a contender to succeed as leader. The Liberals’ Clr Stephanie Di Pasqua is around 500 votes ahead with postal votes traditionally favouring her party. As counting continues Stephanie Di Pasqua has 51.2 percent of the vote (14,361) ahead of Labor’s Clr Julia Little on 48.4 per cent (11,922) after preferences. There has been a swing of around 10.2 percent against the Liberals and a swing of 12.7 percent to Labor in the seat until recently held by the Liberals’ John Sidoti with a 13.6 percent margin. The Greens’ candidate and City of Canada Bay Clr Charles Jago has picked up around 10 percent of the vote with a swing to his party of 0.6 percent. The seat has a significant Italian speaking community and includes blue ribbon Liberal areas around St Georges Crescent in Drummoyne, public housing estates between Five Dock and Concord as well as high rise in Rhodes with a large Chinese speaking community. Popular local MP John Sidoti recently resigned in the wake of an ICAC inquiry into shopping centre rezoning in Five Dock. Lane Cove MP claims he was ‘personally targeted Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts has alleged Sydney’s Teal candidates ran a multi-million dollar election campaign that personally targeted him. Speaking on election night, Mr Roberts also said the Teals ran a negative campaign that backfired on them and had no credible policy. “They did have one policy and that was getting rid of me,’’ he said. The Teals were critical of Mr Roberts’ reforms as state planning minister and he said they had run a coordinated campaign despite standing as local independents. “This is a party we are dealing with and if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is probably a duck,’’ he said. The Lane Cove MP also claimed they had brought in campaigners from outside the electorate as part of a cashed up, American style campaign. “They were blow-ins from outside Lane Cove and we caught them out,’’ he said. “You can’t allow billionaires to buy seats and buy democracy.’’ He acknowledged Australia’s richest woman - mining magnate Gina Rinehart (pictured) - was a personal friend who visited the Lane Cove electorate on election day but said she came to hand out pies to campaign workers from all political parties. Mr Roberts has accounted for 55.6 per cent of the vote after preferences despite a swing of 22.3 per cent to Independent candidate Victoria Davidson who was coming third in the contest, behind ALP candidate Clr Penny Pedersen, as The Weekly Times was going to press, with counting continuing. ☐ Labor candidate for Drummoyne, Canada Bay councillor Julia Little, with volunteers on Election Day. ☐ Likely victor in the battle for Drummoyne, Canada Bay Deputy Mayor Stephanie Di Pasqua with volunteers on Election Day ☐ Mining magnate Gina Rinehart hands out party pies in Lane Cove

The upgrades’ new 15-storey tower will be the centrepiece of the most significant redevelopment in the hospital’s 140-year history. Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Dr Teresa Anderson AM said hospital staff were excited to see the stunning new designs. “From expanded emergency rooms to stateof-the-art operating theatres and much more, the health and wellbeing of our patients and their families has been at the forefront of this new design,” Dr Anderson said. Former Health Minister Brad Hazard welcomed the upgrade in one of his last speeches as a minister. “This redevelopment is a once-in-a-generation project but most importantly it will deliver more operating theatre space including a hybrid theatre to facilitate complex surgeries, double the recovery space, as well as deliver a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 30 per cent more capacity,” he said. The bright, contemporary design of the new tower will seamlessly connect to the existing hospital campus and includes a new northern entry from Johns Hopkins Drive to improve community access. Known as R.P.A, the hospital serves more than 740,000 people who live in the local health district and around one million people in the inner city. For more information visit: www.rparedevelopment.health.nsw.gov.au The Inner West’s largest hospital - Camperdown’s Royal Prince Alfred - will get a $750 million upgrade, it was announced last week. ☐ An artist impression of the new tower at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Graffiti blights Blenheim Road says local “The graffiti to the breadshop has been there for over 10 years and despite many emails and phone calls and meeting a Council Officer on site Ryde Council says it is not its responsibility,’’ Mr Brittain said. “The other premises are having sufficient difficulty making their business work and their landlords are not particularly helpful.” Mr Brittain said local police had been contacted about the graffiti “several times over the past ten years” and TWT can confirm police recently apprehended a suspected offender caught carrying multiple cans of spray paint near Macquarie Park. Sydneywide police also have a database that tracks distinctive ‘tag’ style signature graffiti. “Yet it still keeps happening,” Mr Brittain said. GRAFFITI vandalism has blighted the Blenheim Road shops and other North Ryde businesses but civic authorities appear to be powerless to do something about it, local resident Robert Brittain told The Weekly Times. ☐ Graffiti blights the elegant facade of the North Ryde Bread Shop.

Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. OBITUARIES FOR SALE FILING CABINET – 4 drawers with key lock. Councillor Brown described the Purcell motion as a political stunt and said he would pay he own expenses on the trip. “There is no ICAC investigation and it is not likely to be an ICAC investigation,’’ he said at the meeting. “The idea that we’re going to stand down, waiting for years and years, is just ridiculous,’’ he said. Independent Clr Roy Maggio told the meeting the Labor councillors were wasting ratepayer’s time putting up a motion that was never going to pass a council meeting with a Liberal majority. “Labor should realise they haven’t got the numbers but here we’ve got the Labor junket royal family with the junket queen and the junket king wasting our time,’’ he said. But Clr Purcell argues that his motion was ‘’the right thing to do’’ because Taiwan has offered to pay costs for some of the councillor conference expenses and this could be perceived as receiving gifts. “Isn’t this our role, isn’t this our duty, aren’t these against our codes of conduct?” he asked. This month’s trip to the Smart City Summit and Expo in Taiwan includes at least 14 conferences in the capital Taipei and the economic powerhouse city of Kaohsiung to discuss government policy, sustainability, digital technologies, telecommunications, Net Zero targets, healthcare, education and architecture. Council staff recently revealed they held discussions with Taiwan and advised councillors there is a possibility the conference may lead to high tech Taiwanese firms opening offices in Macquarie Park. “Over the past three months, Council staff have been working closely with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to improve the prospects for international investment and discussions have also included prospects for international students to study in Ryde as well as pathways for local businesses to connect with new international markets,” a recent staff report to councillors says. It notes Taipei’s offer to pay costs. “The tour organisers will be covering the cost of accommodation, summit tickets, domestic transport, transfers and tours for the delegation while The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office will reimburse travel costs for the Mayor.” The tour has diplomatic risks because China - which accepts private company dealings with private firms in Taiwan - strongly opposes any government-to-government business that may imply recognition of Taiwan as an independent nation. A Labor motion that called for City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM and Liberal Clr Trenton Brown to stand down to allow the ICAC to investigate their current council related trip to Taiwan was defeated by seven votes to four during last Wednesday night’s Extraordinary Council Meeting. NOW IN SIX LANGUAGES www.weeklytimes.com.au ☐ Taiwan has offered to pay for some conference expenses, a City of Ryde staff report notes. Lepek is a wonderful friend Jonine from Gladesville’s World League of Protection of Animals said Lepek Pussycat is currently available for adoption from the World League showroom on the corner of Victoria Road and Cowell Street. “This fine gentleman is about five years old and still playful but not destructive,” she said. “His foster carer reckons that with him you will have a very devoted companion, who will follow you around and initiate affection.” Jonine said Lepek would suit an adult seeking a companion animal. “He is a little scared of visitors, particularly children, but for his lucky owner he will be a wonderful friend,’’ she said. “He is also reported to be a clean cat who eats well and is healthy.” If you are interested in adopting Lepek or finding out more, please make an appointment to visit, by phoning 9817 4892 or 0409 741414. Like all WLPA cats, Lepek is desexed, microchipped vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed. This week’s Cat Of The Week is a black and white cat who bonds well with adults. ☐ Lepek Pussycat. Socceroos celebrate home coming with convincing win over Ecuador It was Australia’s first home match after the FIFA World Cup Finals and a crowd of 20, 268 saw Australia’s opening two goals come from experienced campaigners Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil in a workmanlike showing against an Ecuadoran side that rarely got going. In the 12th minute Irvine was given the simplest job to tap in a goal although a replay showed Socceroo Mitchell Duke was offside - but with no VAR in use - Australia had the lead. Ecuador can play good football when it gets its act together and hit back quickly with defender Felix Torres rising above Irvine to head a 23rd-minute cross from star player Jeremy Sarmiento past Mat Ryan in goal. Sarmiento’s night ended when he limped off with an injury on the half-hour mark and this allowed the Socceroos to re-establish supremacy and soon after they caught the visitors out at the back. Defender Piero Hincape had a ball snatched off him by a pressing Irvine and the midfielder was able to tee up Mabil in the box. The winger powered the ball into the back of the net and Australia looked certain to win. Duke was at his bustling best and the forward could consider himself unlucky to have not scored. Hardworking midfielder Keanu Baccus played well and so did Wanderers forward Brandon Borrello and Manchester City attacker Alex Robertson. Robertson looked every bit a EPL quality player on his maiden Socceroos outing and it was his intricate build-up play that began a move for Kuol’s goal as a ball to Robertson saw him charge down the left before he found Aziz Behich, whose cross was tapped in by Kuol. The Socceroos have given fans reason to be optimistic about the future of the international side with an impressive three goals to one win over Ecuador at Commbank Stadium on Friday night. ☐ Awer Mabil and Jackson Irvine celebrate a Socceroo goal against Ecuador in Sydney on Friday night.

There were other significant milestones reached in the last week in the space of 5-12-year-olds signing up to play cricket too. A total of 41,868 5-12 year olds, a combination of those who play Cricket Blast and junior club cricket, have registered to play cricket this season, up 8% from last season year to date. Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said the registra- tion numbers were a significant achievement but that the work had only just begun. “It is heartening to see the community supporting our wildly important goal of doubling the num- ber of 5-12-year-olds playing our game,” Germon said. “For Cricket Blast in particular, Cricket NSW is currently providing greater assistance by delivering some programs directly in regions and loca- tions of need to support the work of clubs and as- sociations in delivering the sport at a local level.” Ryde councillor - and talented cricketer in a previous life - Roy Maggio (pictured) was recently recognised for 27 years of mentoring young Ryde Hunters Hill Pirates cricketers during Saturday morning sessions at Boronia Park Oval. CRICKET NSW has announced that more kids are playing Cricket Blast in the state than ever before, while registrations for 5-12 year olds have passed pre-COVID levels (2019/20). APIA in wet weather draw The game was played in drizzling rain and the Wanderers opened the scoring with a Alessandro Lopane strike in the 37th minute. APIA hit back in the 58th minute when Diego Celis latched onto a great pass from Sean Symons and took the lead in the 76th minute when 18-year-old Franco Farinella slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. With the score sitting at two to one in favour of APIA in the 88th minute, the game seemed all but over. But in the 90th minute the Wanderers’ Ariath Piol found a roaming Jar- rod Carluccio in the 18- yard box who equalised. Both clubs had an op- portunity to win it in injury time and APIA can thank goalkeeper Ivan Necevski for a miracle save. APIA coach Franco Parisi said he is proud of how his team came out in the second half but conceded it was three points lost, not one point gained. “We saw some very good football played and we did feel that the second half was very much our game, and there was enough opportunities to score four or five goals,’’ he said. “We didn’t and they found a moment to get an equaliser towards the death and that was the difference of the game.” Parisi said APIA’s build up play has been good in recent weeks. “There’s some consistency of the goals we’ve conceded in the last two weeks, so we were able to identify that, but there’s also some confidence around what we’re doing with the ball and working towards getting some more goals,” he said. Undefeated APIA Leichhardt drew 2-2 with the Western Sydney Wanderers at Wanderers Football Park on Saturday night. Gladesville Ryde Magic FC win Stroke Recovery Cup Magic led three one at half time with goals from Chris Gaitatzis (33) Stefan Baker (38) and Kokhi Hiyaoka just before the half time whistle. Hiyaoka struck again in the 75th minute to give Magic a four goals to two lead but Bankstown made it a nervous few final minutes with a Corey Freeman goal. Chris Gaitatzis won the man of the match award for the home side, judged by three players from Magic’s Under 15 Youth team. The annual match is an initiative by former Putney Public School Principal and Gladesville Ryde Magic supporter John Koletti who is recovering from a stroke he suffered in 2019. Mr Kolleti has since dedicated his time educating others on stroke awareness, how to reduce the possibility of stroke, as well as creating exercise videos focussing on stroke recovery rehabilitation. He said both clubs “jumped at the opportunity” to become involved in this important initiative and this is the third year of the Cup. “Both clubs will use their social media platforms to share important information on stroke with their communities and has become a highlight for both clubs, each year,” he said. “The two clubs are working with the motto: “If we can help one person with their stroke awareness, our combined effort has been worthwhile.” There are also plans for a Stroke Recovery Shield to be played in the younger age groups. More than 445,000 Australians are living with the affects of stroke and it is the third most common cause of death in Australia. Around 55,000 Australiand suffer a stroke each year. “Globally, there are 62 million stroke survivors and a stroke can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender,’’ he said. BY THE ONE EYED TIGER Tigers defeat the Mexicans The Tigers roared in Friday night’s big game against the Mexicans to win the second half by six points to two. The six pointer South of the Border came in the 59th minute when captain and hooker Api Koroisau chased his own grubber kick to score his first try in the black and gold, which fullback Adam Doueihi converted over the black dot. Asu Kepaoa had earlier notched up a try in the 29th minute when English import and second row forward John Bateman pushed off tackles in a passing movement that sent Asu across the try line. Coach Tim Sheens said his strategy was to come out fighting after half time and stop the Mexicans crossing for a try. “I asked them to win the second half and that’s what they did,’’ Tim told me. Tiger legend Steve Roach tells me our English import is going to be our “X-factor” this season as we go all the way to grand final glory. “John Bateman, he’s got a great fend and he’s very strong, you’ve got to get very hard on him because he offloads the football one-handed for a great pass,” he reckons. And if you follow statistics you’ll read that Adam now ranks the most successful goal kicker in the NRL and can convert a try from any position in all conditions. This Saturday the Tigers travel to Brisbane to make April Fools of the Bananabenders. We won the encounter 32 to 18 last season and we’ll win again on Saturday. After that we have the huge away clash against the Jellies on Easter Monday, May 10. Promoted as the Easter Monday Showstopper, this local derby in Swampland is being billed as a possible preview of the grand final and the Tigers are giving children FREE admission and every Tiger fan will be given a free flag. There’s 15,000 flags being put aside and Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe tells me he wants to see a sea of flags at the game. “The whole precinct will be buzzing with the Easter Show next door and this is our chance to show how strong and passionate the support for Tigers is,” he said. For more information about this free ticket offer, please visit the website www.weststigers.com.au With the game expected to be sold out early, you can watch it on the Big Screen at the Tigers Den at Club Ryde, the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club and the Sackville Hotel in Rozelle. The game against the Bananabenders starts at 7.30pm. SEE YA THERE! ☐ Fullback Adam Doueihi has golden boots.
