Disney On Ice presents 100 Years of Wonder is bringing the magic to guests through dynamic moments that take place on the ice and in the air. Father Martin’s Musings To know and to love They included works such as Hamlet, King Lear and Macbeth then her love for the works of Shakespeare never dried up! And I am sure that over time this teacher conveyed this same love to many of her students. There is an enduring and valuable life principle here and that is in life to truly appreciate someone and their works we often need to go beyond just knowing about them to then appreciate what motivates them and then what shapes their words and works. This is the fruit of a process that takes time and perseverance, yet in passing on what they have to offer is often the best way to go. There was a great story where in New York city at a big dinner a great classical actor was asked to recite the famous psalm The Lord is my Shepherd when he finished to a great round of applause an unknown guest also recited the same psalm and when he finished people were stunned. The actor wisely said; “I knew the psalm but this man obviously knew the shepherd!” Jesus of Nazareth makes this point; “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” (Matthew Chapter 15, verse 8) Fr Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic hospital chaplain Only recently I read where a long serving English teacher shared that she gained her great love for the works of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) simply by seeing his works in a library and then deciding to read them. Also the wedding anni- versary of the late Vince Fels Toll Review announces public hearings At the same time, Professor Fels and his deputy Dr David Cousins AM have provided the public with a snapshot of where work by Treasury and Transport for NSW was up to upon their appointment. The previous work undertaken was never released in any form by the former Government, despite a promise to do so by the end of 2022. Govt rules out congestion tax, motorway extension The snapshot provides a number of reform options, including an entry charge to the CBD – commonly known as a congestion tax in other international cities. Another option was to consider extending the Sydney motorway network by placing tolls on previously untolled roads to create a larger, continuous network. The NSW Government is today ruling out both options, as both are contrary to Labor’s election commitments. Roads Minister John Graham said neither option fitted the Government’s pledge to end the era of “toll mania” under the previous Coalition government and take financial pressure off households The NSW Government’s Independent Toll Review led by Professor Allan Fels AO is engaging the public in its task to recommend a simpler, fairer and more efficient tolling system for Sydney, with the release of a discussion paper, a call for public submissions and the announcement of upcoming public hearings. and businesses that have felt the brunt of toll inflation in recent years. “Toll mania is a thing of the past which is why I need to be very clear and say the NSW Government will not support any recommendations to place tolls on previously untolled roads and there will be no charge to drive into the Sydney CBD, as we promised in the election,” Mr Graham said. “The previous Coalition government did not release the tolling options that were being considered by them but we believe this snapshot of work will help Professor Fels and Dr Cousins as they move to the next stage of their Review and engage the public on creating a simpler and more equitable toll network.” “Our tolling system is broken. There are fixed charges, distance charges, mixed access and distance-based tolls, amongst other things. This needs to be sorted out and this government is doing exactly that.” The Fels Inquiry will benefit from the considerable and detailed work done by Treasury and Transport and build on that over the coming months into 2024. “We need to find a simpler and more equitable system for the people of NSW, and the previous government’s work did not go far enough,” NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said. “We are working towards providing financial relief for motorists not only by implementing a $60 weekly cap in the short term but also by finding the best possible solutions for long-term toll reform.” Options canvassed include network pricing that would involve an access charge and a distance-based charge, with all motorways moving to a common pricing structure. A variant to this is a geographic motorway zone system. Professor Fels’ discussion paper will help guide public submissions and the review will then lead three days of public hearings in July to hear from members of the public, businesses and industry stakeholders about the impacts of tolls and ideas for reform. “I need to acknowledge the extensive work done already done in this space however much more consideration and consultation is needed to create conditions for real reform,” Professor Allan Fels AO said. “It is so important we hear from the public and other key stakeholders and I look forward to speaking with many face-to-face.” The Fels Review will publicly release its final report next year with the government to consider its recommendations. The peak body representing councils in Greater Western Sydney, the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of an independent review of motorway tolling in NSW. “WSROC has been advocating for a review of road tolls over many years, urging the government to make toll roads simpler and fairer,” said WSROC President, Councillor Barry Calvert. “The people of Western Sydney are more greatly impacted by tolling issues than other parts of Sydney, due to their greater dependence on private vehicles resulting from Western Sydney’s lack of equivalent public transport coverage and capacity. “Also, on average, Western Sydney residents travel further to access jobs, services, and recreation. “As a result, tolls represent the second largest cost for most households in Western Sydney.” The NSW Government is set to introduce a $60 a week toll cap scheme for household motorists, and a reduction in the truck toll multiplier for heavy vehicles on the M5 East and M8 corridors from the start of next year, for two years. The Public Discussion paper can be found at: nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/toll-review The 2022 Summary Report can be found at: treasury.nsw.gov.au/toll-review Further information about NSW tolls including how and when to make a submission can be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/tolling Cumberland Gang Show is back for 2023! 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 21 June, 2023 Hunters Hill Guest Column Trinity Sunday is a day where the church celebrates the Triune nature of God, the mystery of one God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To The POINT It is a wonderful masterpiece that many theologians have spent years and pages trying to unpack filled with beautiful words and phrases. When I was writing for Trinity Sunday I felt a certain resistance. I am not sure I have much to say. I can’t do this. I don’t want to do this. Then I started to realise the number of times I said I. So slowly putting the ego in its place I found myself more open to the word “WE”. It is this “WE” of God which continues to reach out to us, which opens doors and enables the flow of love to make itself present in our world. I wonder how many times we are even aware that we stop this flow of the WE. A few weeks ago, I sat with an inmate whose mother had died the night before. He recalled that despite his many years of drug and alcohol abuse she never once condemned him. One night a few months ago she said to him, “You’ll only be happy when you make amends with the past and give your heart to God.” So, after 20 years walking in the darkness, he accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to his victims. He was set free. At that moment he realised that his mum had waited for him to cross that path before giving up her last breath. She was the face of Christ to him, loving him back to life. All he needed to do was open himself up to this Trinitarian flow once he stopped condemning himself. *** Pope Francis is working hard for a church that listens. A church that is open to new ways of being and a church that allows the flow of God to be alive. And it is here that the understanding of Trinity may become more relatable. Nicodemus, a Pharisee, and leader of the Jews comes to Jesus by night. He comes asking questions. Jesus reminds him that He did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Perhaps the world Jesus refers to is the one that lives within us, which says we are not good enough or have much to offer. The world within which blocks us off from the never-ending flow of God’s love. Is this the world Jesus wants to save? We seem pretty good at condemning ourselves. Richard J Korkor has played the role of Jesus in the Hunters Hill Way of the Cross Walk. On finding the WE of God HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles Red Shield Appeal This weekend, The Salvation Army will be out in the Hunters Hill Village (Saturday 25 June and Sunday 26 June), collecting donations for the Red Shield Appeal. All funds raised locally will be used by the Salvation Army to support networks of social and community services and programs in our area. Any and all support from the community can make an enormous impact to the lives of vulnerable people and help them out of crisis and to help them recover in times of need. I would like to thank the Salvos for their ongoing efforts to make out community a better place to live. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Youth are key to our success Dear Sir, Young people are the key to success in a thriving community. Political action and participation are needed to start conversations about change. As a Year 11 student and longtime resident of Artarmon, I am passionate about representing my local electorate of Lane Cove in the YMCA Youth Parliament this year. Youth Parliament allows students across the state to debate the topics concerning our generation and present bills to ministers in NSW cabinet. The experience of reaching out and raising the issues faced by people in my amazing community has been an incredible part of my role as Youth MP. During the program’s training camp in March, I was ‘Leader of the House’ by my cohort, a position that allows me to facilitate the voices of my peers in debate. Through exchanging diverse perspectives across my cohort, I am hopeful of the change we can make as young people to help the future progress of our country. I firmly believe in the importance of taking action and the role of our representatives in parliament in making decisions that shape every facet of our lives. The future of climate justice and social equality is the responsibility of my generation. I look forward to the opportunity to debate in Parliament this July. JANET ZHENG Lane Cove Salvos Red Shield Appeal Dear Sir, Winter is here. It’s tax time, and it’s that time of year when many of us seek to hit the reset button as the new financial year rolls around – a fresh start. But for The Salvation Army and the thousands of people we support, it means something very different, particularly this year. We are extremely worried about those who are most vulnerable in our community, who are presenting to our services across the country, some for the first time. With this in mind, we want to simply say thank you. Thank you to the Australian public for thinking of others when it would be so easy to just think of yourselves. One of the greatest traits of Australians is that when the going gets tough, Aussies reach into their pockets and help someone in need. I love that about Australia. But it isn’t over yet. The Salvos are hoping to raise $37 million by June 30 to ensure our services and programs across the nation can continue, so nobody struggles alone. This end of financial year, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal by visiting salvationarmy.org.au or calling 13 SALVOS. MAJOR DAVID COLLINSON The Salvation Army Investment in infrastructure in North Sydney Infrastructure investment is a topic that elicits passionate reactions from people across our electorate. Our community has experienced first-hand the anxiety and devastation caused when multiple projects proceed at pace without community consultation. With the Warringah Freeway upgrade, the renovation of the North Sydney Olympic Pool, the exorbitant cost of the Western Harbour Tunnel, ongoing debate around the Northern Beaches Link, development of new sporting facilities and the restoration of public spaces – we are living among cranes, bulldozers and a diminishing tree canopy. Recently, the role of the Federal Government in the process of designating nationally significant infrastructure projects was a key area of debate in Parliament. This debate united almost the entire crossbench against the two major parties; we called for greater transparency, accountability and ultimately, community engagement. Infrastructure Australia is meant to be THE independent organisation, charged with providing advice on infrastructure planning, policy, and priorities to the Federal Government. For many years now it has been sidelined by governments disinclined to listen to advice critical of the politically expedient projects they wished to pursue. Consider the carpark rorts, the North Sydney Pool upgrade and other “promises” of the last decade and you can see why governments may have wanted to be able to continue to avoid external scrutiny. When in opposition, Labor was critical of government pork barrelling and called for reform. Now they are in government they are refusing to undertake real reform. The views I expressed during the debate were drawn broadly from an independent review of Infrastructure Australia completed a few years ago which the Morrison Government sat on. Labor has actioned only seven of its 16 recommendations. It looks like transparency, accountability and true community engagement are just as elusive with this government as they were with the last. Wednesday 21 June, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 Controversial Montefiore proposal to go before a local planning panel tomorrow A previous proposal by Montefiore was recently rejected because its development agency Urbis had not met required procedural documentation and the new proposal seeks to build 144 apartments with a reduction of 126 beds - from 333 to 207 - from a previous proposal. Independent Clr Jim Sanderson said tomorrow’s meeting is being ‘’rushed through’’ without adequate public consultation despite Urbis recently holding public consultation events. Councillor Sanderson said he shares local residents’ concerns that changes to the local environment plan will set a precedent that will allow property developers to push for other four to six storey buildings in the mostly residential suburb. “I have been listening to residents who live near the Montefiore site and I share their concerns about this planning proposal and in particular the proposed increases to the maximum building height controls,’’ he said. “I am also very concerned about the haste with which this process is being managed when we should be involving our community as soon as possible and utilising all the time available under the legislation to get our responses right.” Councillors are expected to discuss the planning panel’s recommendations during the June 26 Council meeting. Councillor Sanderson said this discussion ‘’does not align’’ with a council resolution to hold a community meeting as soon as practicable after the lodgement of a planning proposal for the Montefiore site but a council spokesperson said ratepayers will be given an opportunity to have their say at a public meeting before any proposal is given a green light, even under a state government backed Gateway determination process. “An important phase following Gateway determination is the public exhibition and assessment stage, engaging with the community,’’ the spokesperson said on the concil website. “This is the stage where public submissions can be lodged and considered and at the conclusion of the public exhibition and assessment stage a report will then be considered by Council.’’ The public exhibition and assessment phase is expected to be from August to October. Urbis has also given a commitment to consult with the community. “Montefiore will continue community and stakeholder engagement through the project approval process including exhibition and determination phases and after the exhibition Montefiore will review its plans and address all submissions from the community, key authorities, and government agencies.’’ its proposal submission states. “This includes providing information about the proposal and updates on the approvals process and enabling the community to seek clarification through two-way communication channels.” Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association spokesman Bob Hayes will speak at tomorrow’s planning panel meeting but expressed concern he’d only been notified about the meeting on Friday. He said Hunter’s Hill residents support local environmental plan height restrictions of two storeys. “What they are now proposing is to build the four storey apartments on the outside of the site and in the centre of the site they will build two six storey apartments, which will be completely out of character with the local area.” Residents had previously expressed concern about traffic and on-site parking but they said Montefiore has since assured them it will build a 260 spot underground carpark. The Local Planning Panel for Hunter’s Hill will meet at 11.30am tomorrow (Thursday) to consider a proposal by the Montefiore Jewish Home in Boronia Park to amend the area’s local environment plan to permit an on-site development of four and six storey independent aged care apartments. ☐ Montefiore’s masterplan for its Hunters Hill proposal Megastar pushes legal case against local mother “This is very vindictive” Katie Perry told The Weekly Times the American singer will appeal against the verdict which found her all Australian fashion label - under her own name - did not breach a trademark of the multinational Katy Perry brand. “I was just so upset when I received news of the appeal, they’ve challenged everything in the verdict and it is now going to be another one to two years in court and I could lose everything,” she said. “What is also upsetting are the trolls on social media spreading some very hurtful lies about me.’’ The appeal will be heard in the Federal Court where two out of three judges must agree the original verdict in Katie’s favour was wrong. Katie said she hopes the first verdict will be upheld because it took 15 months of deliberations and was a substantial finding. “This appeal just seems very vindictive and is about saying I’m more powerful than you and forcing me give up to save the time and expense of going through the court system again.” She said she would continue to fight to save her trademark to set an example to her two young children. “If you back down to a bully what does that teach them?” she asked. “But it does take a toll because I’m all about kindness and I hate fighting with anyone.” The young mum said she has been buoyed by support from the Hunters Hill community and from people coming up to her at The Rocks Markets on Saturdays where she sells her original fashions. “The support I’ve received from the community has been beautiful, it keeps me going,” she said. The Hunters Hill mum who recently won a trademark dispute against American mega star Katy Perry said she’s shocked by last week’s appeal against the verdict in her favour. ☐ Fingers crossed: Hunters Hill mum Katie Perry is pictured at her small stall at The Rocks Markets. The second State Signifi- cant Development Application (SSDA2) will be lodged in the coming months with the NSW Department of Planning and En- vironment. The second planning application seeks approval for the detailed design of the hospital redevelopment including the facade detailing, improved land- scaping, urban spaces and ad- ditional car parking and paves the way for main construction works to begin for the redevel- opment. Health Infrastructure Acting Executive Director, Northern Hayley Bell said the development application is a significant step forward for the project. “This is an important step in finalising approval for the main construction works to transform Ryde Hospital into a state-ofthe-art health facility to meet the future health needs of the grow- ing community,” she said. “Sessions are being held during June for staff, patients and the community. ”The sessions provide the opportunity for the community to learn more about the project, meet with members of the rede- velopment team and ask ques- tions about the latest planning proposal.” Acting General Manager of Ryde Hospital Jennifer McConnell said feedback from staff, clinicians, consumers and community members has been inte- gral to the design for the rede- velopment. More than 245 user group and working group meetings have been held, with more than 120 staff members from around 25 health units and departments involved. “Further consultation with staff and the community has helped shape aspects of the hospital’s design, including the final design of clinical and non-clinical spaces, arts and culture, public spaces and sustainability initia- tives to help create a hospital of the future,” Ms McConnell said. Early works have been under- way for the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment since early 2023 including internal refurbishments and a new modular building to enable the decanting and demo- lition of three existing buildings. This will pave the way for construction works to start following the planning application approvals. The Ryde Hospital Redevelopment will deliver a new and expanded emergency depart- ment and intensive care unit, new operating theatres, a new purpose-built ambulatory care centre, new paediatric short stay unit, more adult overnight inpatient beds and expanded medical imaging. It will make best use of the cur- rent services available, including the Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre and historic Denistone House. The $479 million Ryde Hospital Redevelopment is entering an exciting new phase, with the community encouraged to learn more about the next steps for the world-class health facility at a series of information sessions being held this month. ☐ An artist’s impression of the Ryde Hospital redevelopment; and below, an aerial perspective. Pictured above on Monday night celebrating news of the ‘Koreatown’ grant, are Ryde Councillors, Daniel Han, Trenton Brown and Justin Li; along with Member for Ryde, Jordan Lane; KCCR president Jay Ko; and KCCR secretary, Marie Song. “It is great to see this initiative that started when I was mayor come to fruition, and be recognised as worthy of state government support,” Mr Lane said. “This money from Ryde Council and the State Government will see incredible investment into East- wood and Korea town making it one of the major hubs in Sydney for people to come and experience Korean cultural food, fashion, pop-up events and activities.” City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM, said City of Ryde has welcomed the State Government’s decision to award a $198,200 grant to a local business chamber promoting Eastwood’s ‘Koreatown’, which comes as Council prepares to launch its own exciting activation program for the booming precinct. Koreatown will add vibrancy and character to an already-important economic zone, with Eastwood strategically placed between Sydney’s second city, Parramatta, and City of Ryde’s Macquarie Park – Australia’s original innovation district. “City of Ryde has one of the biggest populations of Korean speaking residents in the greater metropoli- tan area, growing steadily over the last five years,” he said. “The official recognition of Koreatown will help boost the local economy and foster greater harmony and cultural exchange.” It follows a Council resolution in January 2022 that the City of Ryde will partner with the Eastwood busi- ness community, residents, and other appropriate stakeholders to formally establish the Koreatown precinct on Rowe Street East. City of Ryde Councillors Daniel Han and Charles Song – both of Korean descent – are chair and depu- ty chair, respectively, of the Koreatown Working Party which was convened on May 9, 2022 in response to the resolution.

Wednesday 21 June, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 Government rejects affordable housing offer for development In response to local protests that included a rally in Hyde Park on Saturday the Labor government said the standing offer of the 22 apartments - reported to be favoured by planning bureaucrats - did not justify the proposal to turn the publicly owned Franklyn Street Estate in Glebe into the new apartment block. The decision moves the new government away from the previous government position to encourage a token number of affordable housing units to support development applications for proposed private and public mixed apartment blocks. The government now plans to refurbish 35 vacant properties in Glebe for social housing and will increase a public housing site at Wentworth Park Road from 17 to 43 dwellings. Housing Minister Rose Jackson said the Wentworth Park Road site would remain publicly owned and existing tenants would be offered temporary housing while it was redeveloped. She also said the social housing waiting list was growing and it is not just the Inner West that should bear the brunt of affordable dwellings. “We absolutely hear that the community is incredibly concerned, distressed and frustrated about what’s happening in the housing market here in New South Wales,” she said. “We are doing everything we can at the state level, today it’s Glebe but this is just one suburb and we will take every single opportunity, suburb by suburb, across Sydney to deliver more public housing.” Shelter NSW chief executive John Engler welcomed the government’s commitment. “We’re looking forward to hearing more announcements like this,’’ he said. There are more than 57,000 applicants on the list for social housing and applicants can expect to wait between five and 10 years. In a shift in policy, the state government has backed away from a proposed Inner West development that offered 22 affordable, social housing apartments as an incentive to approve 425 public and private dwellings. realeSTaTe&FINaNCe ☐ Franklyn Estate protestors urged the government not to push ahead with a proposed 425 unit development that offered a token 22 affordable housing apartments. This includes the annual rate peg set by IPART but - to address concerns around financial hardship - the pensioner rate concession will increase by $50 to $300 per annum, commencing from the next financial year. The rise was approved last week by NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) after the Shire successfully applied for a Special Rate Variation. Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock AO defended the rise and said his council had consistently worked hard to reduce expenditure and maintain levels of service in an increasingly difficult financial climate where it had to meet a legislated obligation to manage its budget responsibly. “We acknowledge the community would see a moderate rise in our rates, coming at a time when many are feeling financial pressure, so I want to emphasise that we take our responsibility to manage our resources very seriously, ” he said. “As a Council, we want Hornsby Shire to prosper into the future and for this to happen we need a firm financial foundation,’’ He stressed the extra income would be spent on community services. “The community can expect to see a large range of tangible improvements and these include upgrades to public toilets, community centres and sports ground amenities,’’ he said. “The money will also be spent preparing our community for the future through resilience programs, bushfire mitigation and education, and events and activities to build social inclusion.” He said there will be no increase to the Domestic Waste Charges applied to the 2023/24 annual rates notice for all rate payers. Local ladies partner in sport Karen Laing is presented with a framed women’s jersey by Rovers’ Life Member Karen Harrison. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. They said action will be taken pending the outcome of the blood and urine samples as well as for trespassing. In other drug related news, police found cannabis on an 18 year old man in West Ryde around 7pm the same day. Police said they had received reports of anti-social behaviour and searched a group of five people at West Ryde Railway Station. POLICE have arrested a suspected drug driver who allegedly hid from them inside Gladesville’s McDonald’s Restaurant. ☐ Gladesville McDonalds The search located two bags of cannabis weighing 5.4 grams and the 18 year old was issued with a cannabis caution. The other four were issued with a move on order. Elderly woman found dead in Top Ryde fire Firefighters were called just after 10:30am to the unit on the second floor of a three-storey building where they located body of the woman who had sustained severe burns. Experts from FRNSW’s Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) are assisting detectives to determine the cause of the fire. An elderly woman was found dead after a fire engulfed her unit in Church Street, Ryde on Thursday morning. ☐ A fire truck outside the block of flats in Church Street where the fatal fire broke out on Thursday. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the fatality serves as a reminder to others about fire safety in the cooler months. “Winter is usually when our firefighters respond to more house fires, and unfortunately, more fire-related deaths and injuries,” Supt Dewberry said. “Having two fire-related deaths just two weeks into winter is devastating and impacts so many people, including the victims’ families and friends, our firefighters and the broader community.” LETTERS to the Editor Future of Denistone Bowling Club in doubt Dear Sir, I would like to bring to your attention the possible closure of the wonderful Denistone Bowling Club located on Chatham Road be- tween West Ryde and Eastwood. It is an oasis set among the majestic gum trees of Darvel Park. It is threatened to be sold off by its owner, The Carlingford Sports and Recreation Club to prop up its ‘pokie palace’ on Pennant Hills road Carlingford. The gentle exercise and social interaction lawn bowls provides men and women has been proven to fight off depression, dementia, diabetics, and cardio- vascular disease, among other illnesses. The ‘Carlo’ has already devoured and sold off the Brush Park bowling club on Marsden Road and pocketed the riches for its own greedy pur- poses. That site is now dere- lict and awaiting an unknown monstrosity. The Deniston Bowling Club is an integral local facility used by the local Neighbour Watch pro- gram, social card and mahjong players not to mention the hundreds of local and regional bowl- ers. It holds tournaments to support charities such as Life Line and recent- ly held the prestigious Zone 10 Grade 2 pen- nant finals. There have been sev- en bowling clubs closed down in this papers readership area in recent years - please, let’s hope Denistone is not the eighth. GERALD ERICKSON Ryde ACCC toll review Dear Sir, Proposed Changes to Sydney Tollways: The ACCC has been conducting a review into Sydney Tollways, based on a request by the previous Liberal/National Party. Our new State Labor Government is now proposing a “fairer” way to toll ALL Sydney motorists. Rather than solve this city’s “most tolled city in the world” reputation, the State Government will soon be proposing to TRANSFER the horrendous toll mess from the West and South West to the East, North and North West. Also, rather than introduce a CBD Congestion Tax, they may introduce a toll on majors roads leading into the city from the North and North West, such as the Anzac Bridge, Gore Hill Freeway and Warringah Expressway. This will allow them to reduce the costs on the M4, M5, M7 & M8 for our western suburbs neighbours, as the toll companies will not cop a reduction in their revenue targets. Distance tolling has already being ruled out by the new Transport Minister, John Graham. However, Dynamic Tolling (similar to surge pricing) has not being ruled out yet. The cost of living is already bad enough for everyone in NSW and none of us want more tolls imposed on us in the name of “fairness”? Sydney motorists have an opportunity to give their feedback on these proposed changes by visiting the ACCC website and I suggest we all do this before these proposed changes are imposed on us already over-burdened motorists. The event attracted 66 bowlers from clubs near and far, including Avalon, Balmain, Concord, Denistone Sports, Greenlees Park, Lane Cove, Mt Lewis, North Epping, North Ryde RSL, Putney-Tennyson and Willoughby, as well as the host men’s and women’s clubs. After three games of highly competitive bowls played in good spirit, the day was won by the very strong composite outfit of Greg Carroll, Greg Stuart (Denistone) and Jake Stuart (HH), pictured (l to r) being presented with the $900 winners’ cheque by Kym and Olivia of Belle Property Hunters Hill. The runners-up were another Denistone combination of Bobby Carabetta, Ron Court and Dave Linnert, with third place going to John Restaino, Tom La Greca (Greenlees Park) and Tony Beno (HH). It was a fine day out on the greens, including lunch by Lozzi which was enjoyed by all participants. ☐ Belle Property Triples Tournament at Hunters Hill Club Hunters Hill sink Whales Club President Luke McCormack said the match lived up to expectations of being a hard fought encounter. “The first half was extremely tight with both teams scoring tries and being separated only by a penalty goal,’’ he said. “The second half was frantic with both teams operating at full speed as they exchanged tries, but it was ill-discipline from Mosman that presented the Hillies with penalty conversions through sharp-shooting five eight Sam Ryan.” McCormack praised the Hunters Hill defence. “The Hillies used score board pressure to all but snuff out the Mosman attack but a late penalty try from a driving maul created a late game contest,’’ he said. “Hooker James Lynch once again demonstrated his huge motor with a late try off a strong run from Centre Ben ‘Stewie’ Stewart - and the game was over with Hunters Hill running out winners.” This Saturday Hunters Hill play Waverley at Waverley Oval. APIA draw the Italian derby The longest running derby in Australian football - known as the Italian Derby - provided an opportunity for both teams to show why they are at the top of the table. Swibel put Marconi ahead in the 67 minute before Stewart salvaged a draw with a goal in the 89th minute. APIA Leichhardt coach Franco Parisi said he was disappointed to have left Bossley Park with just a point. “I feel that both goals were not from great football and for us we know that we can be better,” he said. “They made it difficult for us and there was a lot on the line for both clubs but no one walks away a winner and for us I will never say it’s a fair result unless we win.” North West Sydney Spirit were defeated by four goals to two at Pluim Park on Sunday. The Central Coast Mariners goals were scored in the 39th, 49th, 72nd and 73rd minute while the Spirits goals were scored by Mitch Davison in the 52nd minute and Lobo in the 57th. Spirit manager David Perkovic was disappointed by his team’s defending. “In my opinion, there wasn’t anything fantastic in them producing the goals, it was just very poor defending. Fantastic finishes, but it shouldn’t have gotten to that stage,” he said. “Two goals away from home will usually get the win, but not today unfortunately.” APIA Leichhardt and the Marconi Stallions shared the spoils in a thrilling one all draw at Bossley Park on Saturday. ☐ Action from APIA Leichhardt’s clash with Marconi (image: Football NSW)
16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 21 June, 2023 Alex Twal breaks his hoodoo It came in the 23rd minute when halfback Brandon Wakeham put a kick up which was batted down by backline bombshell Brent Naden and the loose ball fell into the lap of the Lebanon International legend who pounced to score. Players from both sides rose up to celebrate with Alex and even referee Ziggy Przeklasa-Adamski grinned from ear to ear as he pointed for a try and the Tiger fans chanted Alex’s name. The try was no more than Alex deserved as he’s set up dozens of four pointers for his team mates since he made his debut in 2017 and went on to be a regular first grade Tiger. Tigers coach Tim Sheens last year promised Alex they’d get him a try and break his duck and he and Benji Marshall joined a celebration to be remembered for years to come. Brandon converted the try to give the Tigers a six to four lead. The Tigers enjoyed a strong start to the second period with Westfield Sports High School teenager Tallyn Da Silva (18) making his debut and he fell just short of scooting over for his first try. Tallyn said he didn’t expect to make his debut until 2025 and Saturday night’s game was a dream come true as he replaced injured captain and hooker Api Koroisau. “I grew up wanting to do this and they’ve even given me the largest shoes to fill with the injury to Api,’’ he said. Tim said Tallyn is a good kid - but he’s still a kid - with a great future ahead of him. With Api injured the captain’s armband was worn by second row forward John Bateman who had only arrived from Pommieland a few weeks ago. He led by example and will be a player to watch as the Tigers surge to grand final glory in coming weeks. Now’s the ideal time to bet Ma-InLaw’s pension fund on the Tigers with ten rounds to go and twenty points to collect. We pick up full points this weekend with the Round 17 bye before we travel to Bananabender Land for a rematch with the Cowgirls. SEE YA THERE!
