Bishop Barron shared several insights that I would now like to share. Some of the people mentioned who he considered to be great leaders included; Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King and the now Saint Teresa of Calcutta. The bishop made the point that each of these leaders started off with having a vision as to what they saw needed to happen in life. Then he said these people after having a vision were not discouraged when they met resistance from people who did not have or believe in their vision. Finally, each of these people would be the first to admit they were not perfect yet in their vision they did live with an obvious sense of integrity. A case in point and this concerned the former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln after the terrible American Civil War he was seriously asked; “Now what are you going to do with your enemies?” This great man immediately said; “I will make every effort to befriend them as I believe this is the best way to destroy an enemy.” I am sure his words were remembered because he lived his message! Jesus of Nazareth endorsed the above principles when he said, “So whatever you want others to do for you do to them.” (Matthew Chapter 7 Verse 12) Father Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic Hospital Chaplain in Sydney. Recently I heard an insightful discussion about some traits of great leaders, it featured a current American Catholic bishop whose name is Robert Barron. Wednesday 30 August, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 3 A minute’s silence for the Late Joy Piotrowski Last Tuesday night’s City Of Ryde Council Meeting honoured her with a minute’s silence and a tribute. “Joy Piotrowski (nee Wood) was a true Ryde local who lived on Epping Road since it was a single lane, unsurfaced road,’’ the tribute declared. “She married Jan Piotrowski, a Polish refugee who had managed to survive the Nazi occupation in his homeland and they lived a long and happy marriage until Jan’s passing in 1996.” The tribute noted that Joy’s story reflects the history of North Ryde and its community. “Joy and Jan built their house on Epping Road when surrounding blocks were orchards,” it recalled. “She developed a large group of friends in the war services homes that were built in North Ryde post World War Two and she selflessly helped many of them in their later years with shopping and cleaning.” Joy was a long-time member of the Macquarie Branch of the Labor Party and her letters to this newspaper reflected her strong commitment to social justice, workers’ rights and equal opportunity. “Her devotion to Ryde and The Labor Party is the Prolific TWT Letter To The Editor writer and Ryde Citizen of the Year 2016 - Joy Piotrowski - passed away on August 4, aged 89. ☐ The late Joy Piotrowski receives her Ryde Citizen Of The Year Award from former Mayor and Bennelong MP Jerome Laxale. essence of her work as a volunteer and she should be remembered for her tireless efforts to make our city a better place,’’ Ryde Labor Clr Bernard Purcell said. “Even in her later years she still demanded to hand out at elections, even if it was from a wheel- chair.’’ In being named as The City Of Ryde’s Citizen of the Year in 2016, it was noted that Joy lived in Ryde for 59 years and was active in the environmental fight for the Peter Board High School site as well as the community based rezoning of Lachlan’s Line. “She was a member of the Grey Army for a number of years, in contact with both Ryde and Willoughby Bus Depots to provide advice on bus timetabling, bus stops and requirements for bendy buses,’’ her award citation noted. Joy also served on the City of Ryde Committee for the Status of Women in 2010. “She was closely involved with Marist Sisters College Woolwich and Holy Cross College in Ryde but was also strongly supportive of public education,” her award citation noted. Joy is survived by her three children, John, Jim and Julie, two grandchildren, Daniel and Alison and a great granddaughter Francesca. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 1 is special to us at The Weekly Times because it is our 102nd birthday, having been established on September 1, 1921 by Charles Halliday Engisch in Gladesville as THE TIMES changing name to THE WEEKLY TIMES some years later. JB acquired The Weekly Times on May Day 1979 as just the second proprietor when it unfortunately had fallen on hard times following the death of founder Charles Engisch and was on the verge of closure and down to four pages. Unfortunately things are not much brighter today! Mainly because of the dreaded Covid 19 scam which closed most community newspapers Australia-wide because of cancellation of major advertisers, the lifeblood of all “free” local newspapers, JB has been losing thousands of dollars every week for nearly three years. Murdoch and Fairfax were sensible enough to close all their print publications. Every time JB considered it was time to cease somebody would come up in the street or elsewhere and wanted to shake my hand and say “Thank you.. our club or society would have closed without your support!” I have been forced to sell my assets and the cash can is empty. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 New pathways for Alzheimer’s Disease The major feature of AD is the build up of amyloid deposits in the brain which is found outside brain cells as amyloid plaques and within neurons as neurofibrillary tangles. The major protein within the amyloid plaques is a small protein termed beta amyloid. Beta amyloid is considered to be central to causing the pathology of AD. It is released by enzymatic cleavage from a larger parent protein, the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Beta amyloid is produced in the brain by everyone but when its levels are elevated it leads to AD. Strong evidence in support of beta amyloid playing a causative role comes from genetic studies where mutations in the APP gene and the presenilin gene leads to early onset familial AD. Individuals with Down’s Syndrome who have an extra copy of the APP gene develop early amyloid deposition and an associated early onset form of the disease. After several failures, effective drugs for lowering beta amyloid in the brain have been developed with the two most recent drugs Lecanemab and Donanemab showing the most promise to date. Lecanemab has recently received FDA approval and is likely to be available in Australia towards the end of this year. How effective these drugs are in actually slowing down cognition remains to be determined although a recent presentation in July 2023 at the International Alzheimer’s Congress in Amsterdam showed that cognitive decline was reduced by 40% with Donanemab. More recently another drug Remturnatug has been shown to most effective in reducing amyloid deposits in the brain within three months as opposed to 12 to 18 months for the previous drugs demonstrating that effective drugs for treating the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s will be in Australia by next year. It is highly likely that these anti amyloid Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia affecting over 50 million people worldwide. drugs and other drugs in development will be most effective with early diagnosis. Brain PET amyloid imaging has demonstrated that diagnosis of AD pathology can be identified 20 years before onset of symptoms. A relatively cheap and accessible blood test for AD is needed. Recent evidence has shown that protein biomarkers in the blood have been identified that accurately reflect brain AD pathology and hold promise of an early diagnostic blood test in the near future thereby allowing for the anti amyloid drugs to be more effective. Our team at Macquarie University together with collaborators at Flinders University have generated novel antibodies against Alzheimer proteins to develop a blood test for the early diagnosis of AD. This blood test is urgently needed to screen high risk individuals for eligibility to receive the anti amyloid treatment. Lifestyle approaches to reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s may benefit all individuals with negligible side effects. In Australia the AU-ARROW is being conducted to evaluate whether this multimodal lifestyle approach will apply to reducing cognitive decline in high risk Australians. Community meeting over Montefiore plan Dear Sir, A packed community meeting held on 24/8 by Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association Inc. (MRCAA) discussed proposed Montefiore rezoning for redevelopment. Sixty people attended. Montefiore wants Hunter’s Hill Council (HHC) to rezone its massive site from residential two storeys to SP2 Infrastructure to allow six or more storeys, accommodating 144 independent living units for over-65s while 126 aged care beds will close. The meeting agreed: 1. Development scale should match local low density residential. 2. The zoning sought would severely harm local areas. 3. Rezoning sets a strong precedent for ALL Hunters Hill (seven other aged-care facilities and other developments). 4. Only residential zoning is appropriate - not infrastructure. 5. Redevelopment must comply with residential housing development laws. 6. Unanimously resolved that Council reject this Planning Proposal and invite Montefiore to resubmit an alternative proposal consistent with a resiRyde mayor warns of new ‘genocide’ in an urgent humanitarian aid appeal Millions of Armenians died in the genocide of 1915 and Mayor Yedelian OAM told last Tuesday night’s council meeting that Armenians in the enclave of Artsakh could perish in a new humanitarian crisis caused by a blockade by neighbouring Azerbaijan. “The Armenian community is concerned by the real risk of genocide,’’ he told Tuesday night’s City of Ryde Council meeting. “Since 2022, Azerbaijani authorities have illegally blockaded The Lachin Corridor, the only land corridor between Armenia and the independent Artsakh Republic preventing the 120,000 indigenous Armenian population from accessing food, medicine and basic necessities, resulting in a humanitarian crisis. City of Ryde Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM has warned of the imminent risk of a new genocide of Armenians and proposed a successful motion to immediately send humanitarian aid to Armenia. ☐ Ryde MP Jordan Lane, Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM, councillors, clergy and Armenian community members recently raised the flag of Artsakh in Putney in solidarity with its campaign to break the Azerbaijani blockade. The matter goes to HHC Extraordinary General Meeting on September 12. BOB HAYES President Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association What about the working poor? Dear Sir From November 1, 2023 the Medicare Rebate is increasing for doctors when they bulk bill under 16 year olds and Concession Card Holders, but what about the working poor? The AMA has just calculated that there have being about 400,000 fewer doctors appointments this year. When these lost customers get sicker they will strain the Public Hospital system even further than it is at present. CHRIS PIKE Ryde “On the 22nd of February 2023, The International Court of Justice called on Azerbaijan to open The Lachin Corridor and ensure unhindered movement in both directions. “As Councillors are aware, the City of Ryde is home to a large Armenian-Australian community made up of descendants of the Armenian Genocide who are deeply concerned by the International Association of Genocide Scholars assessment of the real risk of genocide by this deliberate, manmade, humanitarian catastrophe.” Azerbaijan denies the claim and insists The Lachin Corridor is the site of a protest by eco-activists. Mayor Yedelian OAM said Australian councils set up a relief fund for Armenians in1915 and has said that Ryde has a special obligation to help because Artsakh’s capital city - Stepanakert - is Ryde’s Sister City as well as being home to more than 120,000 Armenians. He successfully recommended: (a) The Council set up a ‘Mayor’s Appeal for Artsakh’ to provide much needed humanitarian aid to the Armenians of Artsakh and Artsakh refugees, through the Armenian Relief Society of Australia. (b) Donate $1,500 to launch the appeal which will be open for Australians to make a contribution between the 1st of September until the 15th of September 2023. (c) Call on the Federal Government to support an immediate end to the blockade and for the urgent delivery of Australian humanitarian aid to the region.

Independent Clr Jim Sanderson moved an unsuccessful motion to have all Specialist Technical Reviews - sought by se- nior council staff in June - uploaded when received by the senior staff but General Crucial incoming technical reports on the Montefiore Aged Care proposal will not be urgently uploaded onto the Hunter’s Hill Council website, despite a motion by two independent councillors at Monday night’s meeting. Manager Mitchell Murphy warned that uploading reports “willy-nilly” and without summary reports and reviews by staff could be misleading. Mr Murphy said staff are still waiting for reports to come in and Montefiore might opt to bypass the Council and seek Gateway planning approval from the Depart- ment of Planning. Former Mayor Ross Williams (Ind) was the only councillor to vote for Clr Sanderson’s motion and expressed concern that critical reports being used to make deci- sions on this important planning issue are not being released to councillors and the community in time to have a fully informed debate. A screening mammogram is one of the most important things women in this age group can do for their health. “It is anticipated the new permanent site on Cox’s Road will screen approximately 5,000 women every year,” Mr Park said. “Previously, women living in the area had to travel to Northern Sydney or further away Local women will be able to access life-saving breast cancer screening services closer to home, with a new BreastScreen NSW service officially opened in North Ryde last week. ☐ Pictured l to r, BreastScreen NSW Northern Sydney Central Coast director, Meredith Kay; NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park; NSW Chief Cancer Officer & Cancer Institute NSW CEO Professor Tracey O’Brien; and Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jodie Harrison. BreastScreen NSW services are for eligible women with no breast cancer symptoms. Any woman experiencing breast changes, like a lump, should see their GP without delay. Councillor offers to pay for lakeside seats after compassionate spending deferred Liberals cautious after Civic Centre disaster His astonishing offer was made during last Tuesday night’s heated council meeting where his motion for the seats and another motion - by Labor Clr Penny Pedersen - to fast-track a safety handrail on a steep hill in East Ryde were both pushed into deferral land by the majority Liberal councillors. Councillor Maggio said he will spend his councillor allowance on seats for patients and carers despite Liberal councillors voting to defer a Council purchase of the seats, pending budget and works schedule advice from senior staff. The sole Independent councillor was asked to vote with the Liberals and he refused. “No way! No way will I accept this!’’ he said. “There are hundreds of people who use that park by the lake next to the Royal Rehab, including people who have spinal injuries. “We have seats just laying around at our depots and we’re talking about people with significant disabilities who just want to sit around in comfort by a lake. “And I’ll use all my funding as a councillor to pay for this.” Deputy Mayor Shweta Deshpande (Lib) blasted Clr Maggio’s offer to pay for the seats out of his councillor allowance. “That fifty thousand is not your money, it is the ratepayers’ money and you should not put your name on this .. it is not your money to spend,’’ she told him. In a prior motion put forward by Clr Pedersen, the Liberal councillors used their numbers to defer the proposed safety rail and footpath work on Elliott Avenue and Melba Drive in East Ryde. The safety rail debate revealed the City Independent Clr Roy Maggio will pay up to $50,000 out of his own pocket for parkland seats for Royal Rehab patients, visitors and residents next to the adjoining lake at Lardelli Park in Putney. ☐ Independent Clr Roy Maggio is pictured by the lake at Lardelli Park in Putney where he has offered pay for seats for residents and patients and visitors from the neighbouring Royal Rehab. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO of Ryde is sitting on a $24 million dollar surplus and the cost of the handrail and footpath repairs would cost no more than $45,000. It was further revealed (by council staff) the steep gradient on the site (with no disabled support) fails to comply with a Disability Act. Councillor Maggio said he’d received numerous requests for the handrail and footpath repairs and Clr Pedersen threatened to write to East Ryde residents to tell them why they won’t get the handrail and repairs in the near future. “This is the only way for older people to get to the only bus stop to visit the only doctor,” she said. “And it is such a steep gradient it borders on being illegal. “Those who live in East Ryde know it is an ageing community and I plead with you (Liberal councillors) not to bring this down to make a petty political point.” Councillor Lara-Watson (Lib) objected. “It is outrageous to say this is political,’’ she said. “We just can’t recommend seats here, footpaths there and then to suggest it is politically motivated is outrageous.’’ She said “money is tight” and further advised councillors to focus on the budget and their ‘’financial responsibility’’ to Ryde’s 140,00 residents as New video series has a taste for multicultural Parramatta Parramatta restaurants will feature in a new video series that highlights the City’s cul- tural culinary diversity. The video series is hosted by food connoisseur Andrew Levins and explores the world of dining at iconic local restau- rants, cafes and cultural food shops. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Sameer Pandey said the video takes us on a tour of the City of Parramatta from Carlingford and Epping in the north through to Harris Park and Winston Hills. “Our food scene is vast and we want to share local treasures and stories with visiting foodies from all over the world,” he said. Levins has called Parramatta home for 10 years and said the City has one of the most diverse food cultures in Australia. ”From high-end restaurants to street food and a vibrant café culture, Parramatta has everything you need,” Levins said. The deferral motions also reflect Liberal concerns that fast tracking both deferred projects would lead to other projects being put back although staff gave no indication this would be the case. However, The Weekly Times can reveal the Liberals are being cautious in regard to suggested major projects after financial concerns linked to the multi-million dollar plan for The New Heart Of Ryde Civic Centre were recently sent to the ICAC for investigation. Labor Clr Pedersen nonetheless laboured her point about politics. “They (Liberals) have brought their pet projects to this council and we have a twenty four million dollar surplus paid for by people who’ve just had their rates put up,” she said. “So why can’t we have seats where people can sit in front of a lake or help elderly people who want a handrail? “I’m finding tonight incredibly difficult and I’m going to write to people and tell them what we fought for.” SEE ALSO P14 - RYDE COUNCIL NEWS

8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 30 August, 2023 Incoming from Eastwood …. This is how my Dad would start his almost daily emails to me and a lot of other friends and family. You could say he was a serial emailer, but we loved it and we loved him. Dad was a well known figure around Eastwood. He always said hello to everyone and most people knew him if not by name then by recognition of a familiar smiling face. We moved to Eastwood as a family back in 1971, at a time when Eastwood had a movie theatre, a Westfield Shopping Centre and many other long gone shops. At that time Dad owned a milk run and also worked at Eastwood Brickworks firstly on the brick pressing machines and then later as a fork-lift driver. When he sold the milk run he bought a brick truck and started to deliver bricks, but driving a truck around the streets of Sydney was not an easy task, and he eventually sold that and went back to fork-lift driving. As the years went by he took on a management role, but didn’t care much for “telling people what to do” so decided to be a burner, one of the blokes that makes sure the bricks are cooking at the right temperature. He even went to India to help a brick company start their new brick business. Being a burner meant that he worked shift work, which was a great job for a grandfather. It meant that he could spend time with his grandchildren and one of his joys was to do the school run down to Eastwood Public to either drop off or pick up his grandson, always talking to everyone along the way. After retirement and many trips abroad, he never found anywhere he loved more than Eastwood. Australia was his country and Eastwood was his home. He embraced the continual changing landscape of Eastwood and continued to make many new friends including the staff at Lim’s Hot Bread and Harry at Eastwood Centre Newsagency, just to mention a few. His wish was to pass away peacefully at home, and he got that wish on 14 August 2023. He loved and was loved by all who met him and he will be greatly missed. As per the Master Plan adopted in July 2021, Hornsby Park will become a major recreation destination - which will be delivered in stages - and work has already started on building access tracks, a drainage system and retaining walls. “We have also been working to stabilise the quarry walls and work to regenerate the site has also commenced,’’ a Council spokesperson confirmed. The area features approximately 60 hectares of bushland and open space and is home to several features of historical and community interest, including early settler relics, the State Heritage listed Old Man’s Valley Cemetery and remnant buildings of the quarry crusher plant. For further information about the Hornsby Park project visit hornsbypark.com.au. Action group warns of a Montefiore precedent in suburban Hunter’s Hill The Montefiore Redevelopment Community Action Association this week distributed a leaflet to more than one thousand Hunter’s Hill residents that urges them to support its position. “If Hunters Hill Council rezones the Montefiore site and allows apartment buildings up to 26 meters in height (with 144 apartments for premium seniors’ housing) seven other aged care sites in the Municipality could seek the same zoning,’’ the Association leaflet warns. It names the seven aged care sites as The Heritage in Gladesville Road, Twilight Aged Care in D’Aram and Ferdinand Streets, the Hunters Hill Lodge on Gladesville Road, Wurley Court in Passy Avenue, St Anne’s Aged Care in De Milhau Road, St Joseph’s on Gladesville Road and IRT on Gladstone Avenue. “These services would be entitled to seek the same zoning and building heights if Montefiore’s proposal A residents action group opposed to a current proposal by Montefiore Aged Care to build multi-storey independent apartment living blocks at its current site in Boronia Park has warned that granting it the necessary Council rezoning approval will set a precedent that will impact on residential streets across the Hunter’s Hill Municipality. succeeds,’’ Association President Bob Hayes said. “The construction of 26m high apartment buildings would change the character, identity, safety, amenity and environmental quality of our suburb forever.” The Association met at the Uniting Church in Boronia Park last week and stressed it was not anti-development. “The Association is not denying Montefiore’s right to redevelop but asking that any redevelopment be consistent with residential housing development policies and principles,’’ a resolution passed at the meeting states. The meeting nonetheless unanimously resolved that Council should reject the current Planning Proposal and invite Montefiore to resubmit an alternative proposal consistent with a residential site zoning. The issue comes before an Extraordinary Meeting of Hunter’s Hill Council on September 12 at 6pm after Mr Hayes recently described a recent independent planning panel review of the current proposal as a “favourable outcome” for residents. “The planning panel advised Council to allow adequate time for assessment of the proposal and wider community consultation prior to Gateway Determination,’’ he said. “Montefiore’s current zoning only allows buildings up to 8.5m high, which is two storeys, by increasing the height to 26m would allow up to roughly eight storeys.’’ Montefiore says its proposed development will range from two to six storeys. “Planning is sensitive to the concerns of local residents, including locating taller buildings away from street frontages towards the centre of the site,’’ the Montefiore website says. “Buildings are sized and located to allow more trees and open space.” It has not confirmed the Association’s claim on the loss of aged care beds but stressed it responds to a need for more seniors’ housing options and will protect and preserve on site heritage for the enjoyment of residents and their visitors.

Ryde’s rate rise baffles the mayor A two-fold increase in some rates across the City of Ryde has baffled Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM). Residents were hit with the rates rise earlier this month in response to the Valuer General’s estimate of land values and Mayor Yedelian OAM stressed it was not endorsed by the council. “It is very strange that land which was worth one million dollars is suddenly two point two million dollars are some people are paying thirty percent more, it is a mystery,’’ he said. Last Tuesday night’s council meeting recorded councillor concerns the Valuer General’s land valuation has “negatively impacted residents across Ryde” despite Council support for a “below inflation rate” increase. How your council is spending your money Liberal Clr Sophie Lara-Watson said although the Council can’t control the Valuer General’s estimates, it is important to ensure ratepayer’s aren’t hard done by. Councillors voted to authorise Mayor Yedelian OAM to write to the NSW Government calling on it to review the Valuer General’s estimates and to extend the objection period due to a fall in local housing prices. * * * Ryde Labor Clr Penny Pedersen has expressed concern with end of financial year budget figures she says reveal a $2.7 million dollar drop in employment costs at the City of Ryde. While it is known that many staff are working from home due to the COVID pandemic, CEO Wayne Rylands said the drop reveals vacancy rates. “Our staffing costs vary and there were positions that weren’t filled and in the new financial year some of them will be filled,” he said during Tuesday night’s council meeting. Labor Clr Bernard Purcell said he wants to see staff provide residents with more updates on on-going council works. Mr Rylands assured him that signs are being put up at work sites as well as updates on the council website. * * * In response to a residents’ petition requesting an upgrade of the pedestrian bridge that links Vimiera Road and Essex Street, councillors have authorised staff to work with The City of Parramatta Council to investigate the feasibility of replacing or upgrading it. In other news, the Council will assist West Ryde Public School’s principal with the installation of a shelter by granting access to the footpath on Mons Avenue, signposted as the Kiss and Ride section for the school. Meanwhile, Rowe Lane in Eastwood: Council will get painted islands on Railway Parade on either side of Rowe Lane as well as a ‘Give Way’ sign and holding line 1.7m from the kerb. Subject to funding, a roundabout at the intersection of Charles Street and Parry Street will be installed and will incorporate a raised central island and traffic calming devices on Charles Street and on Parry Street. In See Street, Meadowbank a raised pedestrian crossing will be installed south of Stone Street. A 50m long ‘No Parking 8.00am-9.30am – School Days’ zone will be established on the western side of Vimiera Road, north of Epping Road. * * * Staff will provide a report to Council by the October 2023 meeting that explores the opportunity to emulate planning changes adopted by Waverley and Parramatta Councils to achieve all electric new residential and commercial development across the municipality. Staff will give a report at the October 2023 Council Meeting that explores Council-owned and commercial EV charging already available to ratepayers and the assets in Council’s existing EV fleet. The report will also detail Council’s current plans for providing new Council owned EV chargers and details of any expressions of interest from commercial EV charging providers in building new charging infrastructure in Ryde. It will further investigate Federal and State funding opportunities for Council to increase its provision of public EV charging and growing Council’s EV fleet as well as a plan for Council to mandate that EV charging provisions be made in all new multi dwelling developments. The shock images - part of a bstreetsmart campaign - are an initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital and aim to reduce the fatality and injury rates among young people on our ☐ A shock image from the new campaign. ☐ Students from Holy Cross College in Ryde and from Epping Boys High took part in a wheelchair basketball game at this bstreetsmart event last week. roads. One image depicts young people inside a moving car and discussing a party they had just attended. The driver is heard saying he’s fine to drive (despite consuming alcohol) before one of his passengers is seen unclipping her seatbelt to show him a text message. This dangerous behaviour results in a fatal crash with a bike before a dramatic rescue operation plays out with paramedics treating the injured and police interviews with witnesses before they arrest the driver. It ends with an undertaker removing the body of the deceased. Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Assistant Commissioner – Community Safety, Dave Felton said the images need to be shocking because drivers aged 15 to 30 are disproportionally represented in road trauma. “The crash simulations are shocking but they’re designed to be because too many young people ignore other road safety messaging and aren’t alert to the dangers,’’ Acting Assistant Commissioner Felton said. “This bstreetsmart initiative is critical to developing good drivers, riders and passengers, as it demonstrates to young people how quickly and easily things can go wrong on our roads.” The annual bstreetsmart road safety awareness event - funded by Transport for NSW - was held at Qudos Bank Arena last week. Students from Holy Cross College and Epping Boys High attended the three day event and played a game of Wheelchair Basketball which was hosted by Putney-based Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT. Over 25,000 Year 10 and 11 students from across the state also participated. Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT run a road safety program for years K-12, with content aligned with the NSW Dept of Education syllabus. Presenters living with a disability also talk to students about road safety.

The opening of the Centre of Excellence will also allow Sydney FC to create an elite female development squad as a pathway to the club’s A-League Women’s squad for the most talented young female footballers. Sydney FC Chairman Scott Barlow joined NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper unveiled a plaque to officially open the facility last Tuesday. The opening of the Centre of Excellence will also allow Sydney FC to create an elite female development squad as a pathway to the club’s A-League Women’s squad for the most talented young female footballers. Sydney FC Chairman Scott Barlow joined NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper to unveil the plaque at the official opening ceremony of Sky Park. “Sky Park is finally here. It is a world class facility that we have been working on for many years,” Barlow said. “It brings together our entire club under the one roof for the first time in our history. We now have a home, in Sky Park, to be very proud of.” NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said the state-of-the-art Sky Park Centre of Excellence would provide a world-class, high-performance training and community facility. “The NSW Government is committed to breaking down barriers in women’s sport, and Sky Park features dedicated female facilities that will produce more Matildas to do us proud on the world stage, just like the ones wearing the green and gold at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” he said. Sky Park is based at Macquarie University’s Sports Fields and will also lead to expanded collaboration opportunities with the University. “It is Macquarie University’s pleasure to welcome Sydney FC’s Centre of Excellence to its campus,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton. APIA Leichhardt coach Franco Parisi paid tribute to his players, fans and club officials. “I am super-proud of this team but behind the scenes there are a lot of good people who do a lot of good things for this club so we can now celebrate and enjoy this moment,” Parisi said. “It started a long time ago with this group of players and to achieve what we have is amazing. “We talked about it last November and here we are at the end of August where we can celebrate.” “The first-class facilities and the activity they will attract, will add to the vibrancy of our great campus, and create opportunities for meaningful collaborations between Sydney FC and the University.” Vine signs Meanwhile, Matildas Women’s World Cup penalty shootout hero Cortnee Vine will remain with Sydney FC playing in the Liberty A-League. The 25-year-old World Cup winger notched the decisive penalty in Australia’s quarter final shootout win over France catapulting her to instant national hero status. Vine will help Sydney FC defend their Championship and Premiership winning double. “I’m excited and thrilled to be staying with Sydney FC and playing in the Liberty A-League for this season,” she said. “I can feel the Women’s World Cup has ignited a real passion for the women’s game in this country and given it real momentum. “We are heading into an exciting new era for Australian football and I’m incredibly happy to be a part of it.”
16 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 30 August, 2023 BY THE ONE EYED TIGER The former NSW Waratahs representative swivelled his way through several Roosters defenders after halves Api Koroisau and Daine Laurie combined with fullback Jahream Bula in a slick passing move close to the line. Fullback Jahream (21) keeps having class games as a Rookie Of The Year contender and captain Api converted his three shots at goal. The Tigers finish the season with a trip to play the Silvertails at 6pm on Friday night with doubts on whether or not Tigers legend Luke Brooks will play his last game for us against his future club. Luke has struggled to complete training in recent weeks due to a calf injury and coach Benji Marshall on Saturday paid tribute to his 11 years as a first grade Tiger. “We want to send him off the right way, because he’s played 200 games at the Tigers and he’s given his heart and soul and showed a lot of loyalty to us,” Benji told me. And while Luke didn’t get to enjoy a roast chicken dinner after this week’s game, the Tigers presented him with a $1,000 Beefeater Bigg Bugg barbecue inscribed with a message thanking him for his contribution. For the record, Brooks favourite is rump steak. Luke is one of the highest profile players to appear in my One Eyed Tiger column and was Dally M Half Back Of The Year in 2018. He has won countless Man Of The Match awards, scored dozens of brilliant solo effort tries and is one of the best attacking halfbacks to pull on a black and gold jersey. The only one of the so-called Big Four to stay with the Tigers after Aaron Woods, James Tedesco and Mitchell Moses left in 2017, he has been a mentor and friend to a generation of emerging rookie Tiger players. Just as importantly, Luke has been an outstanding ambassador, often representing the club at Anzac Day functions, awards nights and schools’ events. A true Balmain talent, he played his junior football for the Holy Cross Rhinos and Leichhardt Wanderers before being signed by the Tigers in 2012 to play in the Balmain Tigers S.G.Ball Cup Grand Final win over the Faders. His mum Michelle is the Principal at Putney Public School and his family - many of whom live locally - are avid readers of The Weekly Times. Thanks for the memories, Luke.
