2 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 28 February, 2024 Father Martin’s Musings Giving priority to people The priest who was conducting the wedding heard about this news and immediately offered the massive foyer area in the church as an alternate venue. The family of the bride were especially delighted with this invitation and readily accepted the option. The priest was a good hearted yet also a very rigid man and he made it very clear that no alcohol was to be served as it was too close to the house of God. The father of the bride was both a wise and confident man and he approached the priest and said very politely; “Father, did not Jesus of Nazareth the Son of God and of Mary, when he attended the wedding ceremony at Cana have no problems with the serving of wine in his presence?” To the credit of the old priest, he could now understand the wider picture and allowed alcohol to be served in moderation! This story made me further appreciate how the needs of people always need to be a priority over the rules of any institution. Jesus of Nazareth was consistently good in this regard and that is why he said, “The Sabbath is made for man not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark Chapter 2, verse 27) Fr Martin R Maunsell is a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Recently I heard of a story where a soon to be married bride and groom just a few days before their wedding were given the terrible news that their reception centre was declared to be structurally unsound. Magic, Mystic New Age kittens Two adorable New Age kittens are our Cats Of The Week. Magic Pussycat and Mystic Pussycat are ready to be adopted from Gladesville’s World League for Protection of Animals where the team hopes they can be adopted as a pair. “Magic and Mystic are gentle souls and sweet sibling kittens,’’ the team said. “They are delightfully easy to handle and cuddle while you hear them purring and the preference is they stay together, but if there is a magnificent family out there for just one of them they can go their separate ways.’’ The kittens are five months old, desexed, microchipped and vaccinated. They are healthy and easy to please with food, while adapting to your life style, the team said. “If you’re looking for easy-going balls of warmth, then look no further and if you would like more information or to visit please contact us on 0451 614 821 or email us at [email protected],’’ the team said. Okay you may not have been born but you can get a taste of the fashion, décor (lava lamp anyone?) and humour of that decade at Hunters Hill Theatre’s first production for 2024 – Boeing Boeing. First performed in London in 1962 the play centres on bachelor Bernard, who has a flat in Paris and three airline stewardesses all engaged to him without knowing about each other. It all boils down to juggling timetables and a reliable maid who never forgets to change the photographs. Bernard’s life gets bumpy, though, when his friend Robert comes to stay, and complications such as bad weather and a fast new Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning. Soon, all three stewardesses are in the city simultaneously and catastrophe looms. Angelina Bonifacio, Curator of A One-Way Ticket Publication along with President of Lady of Grace Fraternity, Vince Murdocca and Treasurer Dominic Olivieri donated this valuable resource to the school library. Angelina presented the teachers and students a brief outline of the contents covering the italian migration and history of the early days living in the agricultural City of Ryde. The students listened attentively and were ready with questions. It is no surprise that the recently published book on the history of Italian settlement into the City of Ryde would find its way in the Italian Bilingual School Library. ☐ Year 5 and 6 students of the Italian Bilingual School in Meadowbank with, back l to r, Angelina Bonifacio, curator of the ‘A One-Way Ticket’ publication; Vince Murdocca, President and Dominic Olivieri, Treasurer, of Lady of Grace Fraternity; and Patrons of the project, Cristina Pisani, Deputy Principal, and Sara Villella, Principal, of the Italian Bilingual School. TWT On-the-Spot PHOTO (A. Stavrinos) Angelina was amazed at the maturity of the students and their knowledge on migration and of knowing where their family origins lay in Italy. Curious students asked... How long did it take to put the book together? Where did you find the information? Were Italians treated better by the English or by their own countrymen? Was it hard going to school? Why were the italians interned? It was pleasing to hear, this generation understand who they are and have knowledge of their family origins and connect with thier italian culture through learning the italian language. It was a morning of reflecting on their own family history and listening to others migration experiences. The talk ended with a sense of familiarity and belonging. Eastwood Uniting Church hosts a World Prayer Day “This is a timely day of prayer,’’ the team at the Uniting Church said. “We hear from the women themselves via story and video and a short talk will be given by a woman who speaks Arabic and lived and worked in the Middle East for 12 years, and so has a good sense of women’s lives there.” The prayer service will be in English and the presentation slides will be translated into Korean and Chinese. The event has an ecumenical focus and TWT readers from all cultural backgrounds are invited. “Every year around the world, churches come together to prayer on the first Friday of March and for about 40 years the churches of Eastwood have combined for a 10am service and are doing so again this year,’’ the team said. “The churches take turns to host and this year it is at Eastwood Uniting Church which welcomes everyone to this multilingual church.” In the evening, at 6pm, there will be a time of discussion and reflection. The Uniting Church website - https://uniting. church/world-day-of-prayer-2024 - has details of other Uniting churches hosting Palestinian women speakers. “The Palestinian Christian women invite us pray for justice and freedom and commit ourselves to the task of repairing what has been damaged or destroyed,’’ the website says. “It is a privilege to receive this offering of hope from our sisters in Palestine who know suffering and hardship.” The Christian women of Palestine will share their stories during the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 1 at the Uniting Church in Eastwood. ☐ Team members at the Eastwood Uniting Church invite TWT readers of all cultural backgrounds to the upcoming World Day Of Prayer.

Zac Miles is Mayor of Hunter’s Hill Boronia Scouts repair project Carrie Hamilton of Boronia Park Every home has one – that stash of things that are broken, outgrown, or torn - things you’re not currently using because you’re too busy to figure out what to do. How can I fix this? Who can I donate this to? How can I find the matching piece? A group of our Scouts and parents wanted to share hacks to deal with those dormant items that pile up higher and higher until the dam breaks – when we’re all dismayed to see kerbside piles of good items that the rubbish truck will just crunch. 1st Boronia has run two REpair+ REuse Fests this year at our Farnell St hall to share ways to mend, fix, service, sharpen, reconstruct, season, remake, match and swap things that are simply too good to go in council clean-up. Now, thanks to a community grant from Hunters Hill Council, we’ll be able to host more RE+RE fests this year! These aren’t fundraisers – sure, Scouts will sell you a sausage and a coffee – but the driver is to help our neighbours: We invite a knife sharpener to hone your kitchen and garden tools, Parents run a Repair Café to try to diagnose and fix your small household items, One Scout leader runs “Roadside Rescue” teaching how to sandblast rust off and re-season portable barbecues. Another demonstrates bike repair, and another focuses on lawnmower maintenance. Everyone loves ‘Container Tinder’ which started at Henley HENs markets. You know those single, unmatched lids and containers in your tupperware drawer? Throw them in the paddle pool and make a MATCH – many people have! Our Trendy Mending workshops teach you to patch, sew or repair clothing, 1st Boronia Scout Group thanks everyone who joined our RE+RE Fest last month to learn how to deal with those tricky items in your home’s “too-hard basket.” Plant swaps and free worm wee from compost keep our gardens beautiful, Scouts teach you how to wrap gifts with fabric, make lip balm or wraps from beeswax, and blend your own household cleaners, Unwanted gifts, decorations, and kids’ things get traded in our hall’s permanent Sharing Shelf, and we demonstrate you can now recycle your soft plastics, polystyrene, e-waste, and more straight from your door for free when your council joins RecycleSmart. Do you know how to fix something? Or better yet, do you have a child age 5 – 17 who would like to join our Cub, Scout, or Venturer units? Get in touch at [email protected] and keep your eye out for our next event around Earth Day in April. Our community spans both sides of Pittwater Road, and welcomes everyone who wants to share some expertise, some plants, or just a cuppa. We’ve loved meeting everyone at our volunteer-run RE+RE Fests - imagine if every neighbourhood had a permanent hub for repairing, borrowing, swapping, and sharing? How much smaller would your home’s ‘too-hard basket’ be? Carrie Hamilton is a supporter of the 1st Boronia Park Scouts Poor allocation of police resources Dear Sir, I often drive south across Ryde Bridge towards Concord and it always perplexes me as to why there is usually a Mobile Speed Camera set up on Concord Rd, outside McIlwaine Park. At most times of the day the traffic is “bumper to bumper” and no one could speed even if they were tempted to. Wouldn’t it be better to have the camera on places where speeding occurs, such as Epping Rd or better use the funds toward saving the PCYC now facing the axe by this State Government? It would be also preferable to allocate more funds to Highway Patrols on country roads where the horrific road toll continues to climb. Such poor allocation. JANINE ORBAN Eastwood What will save more lives on the roads? Dear Sir, The NSW Government has recently hosted a Traffic SUMMIT to figure out the growing road toll. Now, before we start introducing new 30 kph speed limits. Like they mistakenly did in Big Street, Liverpool, next to a 40kph zone! What a disaster that was until they reversed it. In a recent Police blitz, they tested 114,000 drivers and 17,000 recorded drug (not alcohol) readings and were issued with fines and demerits. So in NSW you are more likely to be hit by a druggie than a drunk. This blitz recorded 15% of people (drivers) effected by pot, ice or cocaine or a combo of drugs. So will 30 kph zones save more lives or will an increase in random drug testing save more lives on the roads? CHRIS PIKE Ryde Councillors expected to back Gladesville Road parking ban “Students at risk” says Deputy Mayor Councillors at Monday night’s meeting unanimously endorsed staff to prepare a report on the ban which has the College’s in-principle support. It responds to concerns of parents unable to find space to park beside curbs at entry points during College drop off and pick up times as well as obstructed views of students stepping off the footpath to cross the road. Councillors were informed around a dozen non-motorised vehicles - including boats - are habitually parked there. The proposal that had been put to the meeting was to ban them from the one section of the road. “It would not be a good idea to deal with the Southern side without dealing with the Northern side because you’ll be just transferring the problem from one side of the road to the other,’’ Independent Clr Ross Williams said. “Therefore I support this provision on both sides of the road.’’ Deputy Mayor Clr Elizabeth Krassoi fears a Gladesville Road ban will transfer the problem somewhere else. “Where will these trailers go, will it be Mary Street outside the primary school where you have primary school children crossing the road?’’ she Hunter’s Hill Council is expected to ban boats, trailers and caravans from parking on both sides of Gladesville Road near the gates of St Joseph’s Catholic College. ☐ Curbside boat parking - like this one in Lane Cove - is a concern for councillors and motorists. ☐ The area next to the gates of St Joeys College on Gladesville Road attract curbside boat and trailer parking. asked. Mayor Zac Miles said this is a municipality-wide problem and that some trailers and boats are from Drummoyne and Russell Lea. “I can think of a few areas of Hunter’s Hill that might warrant this restriction,’’ he said. Although councils can enforce school safety bans through signage and ranger surveillance, Independent Clr Richard Quinn said current state legislation gives trailers and boats 28 days to move on from most council roads. “This is the problem with the current legislation we have to work with,’’ he said. Joubert Street has also been identified as having a non-motorised vehicle parking problem. Council staff are currently in discussion with Transport for New South Wales staff about the issue, which is also expected to be referred to the local traffic committee before a report is brought back to councillors. The State Government and several councils recently expressed concern with a growing number of camper vans and caravans being parked in beachside parking areas where they provide shelter for homeless people.

Wednesday 28 February, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5 JB’s 92 and just getting started! As you can see from the photo, JB is in absolute heaven, not only surrounded by tiger-themed imagery, but the kind of cake that serves as a pretty bloody good incentive to get to 92! The glowing smile says it all - JB had a wonderful day, but has already touched down again in Vienna on Tuesday morning to continue his rehab, which I’m sure our readers will agree, looks to be working. We wish JB a belated Happy Birthday - and here’s to the next dozen annual milestone celebrations. THE WEEKY TIMES’ fearless leader John F Booth AM is in Europe at the moment, mainly in Vienna with wife Ulrike but last Friday he popped into London - as you do when you’re jet-setting the globe - to visit cherished members of the family. Tours offer rare opportunity to see church preservation The tours leave from the front door of the church each 30 minutes from 9am, 10am and 10:30am and are free. “We would love to share more about the work we are doing, and the story of All Saints’ Church and the preservation,’’ Reverend Armstrong said. The parish is also seeking to raise money to finance the restoration. “Emergency work commenced in January 2024 on the East window of All Saints’ after the discovery of significant cracks in the stonework, and breakages in the stained glass,’’ he said. “The window has currently been removed as work is carried out to restore it and, more significantly, the stonework that holds the window in place.” He said it had previously be removed to save it from a potential threat during World War Two. Hunters Hill’s Anglican parish minister, the Reverend Michael Armstrong will host “Walk-A-Bouts” on Saturday, March 2nd and March 16th to inspect what needs to be done to restore the beautiful All Saints Anglican Church. ☐ All Saints An- glican Church in Hunters Hill Where have all the lanterns gone? Only twenty lanterns were installed as council staff revealed that poles designated to be used to hang the lanterns did not have (safety) approved anchors and this would require an engineering assessment that was not feasible in the short time they were given to prepare for the festival. Around $15,000 was budgeted for the festival and Deputy Mayor Daniel Han told last Tuesday night’s Extraordinary Meeting of Ryde Council he is ‘disappointed’ with the outcome. “It was quite pitiful, in my personal opinion,’’ he said. “This is a cultural issue and we need to get it right.” Liberal Clr Trenton Brown conceded the Lantern Festival was not a gold medal performance. “It is not a gold medal but I’ll accept a bronze medal given it is the first time,’’ he said. Labor Clr Charles Song said the community doesn’t want a gold medal, just more lanterns. “We are talking about a Lantern Festival and having a small quantity of lanterns just doesn’t do the job,’’ he said. Independent Clr Roy Maggio acknowledges the risks of affixing lanterns to poles that are not approved by engineers. “Let’s not blame the staff, they are under the pump and are doing a great job,’’ he said. Labor Clr Penny Pedersen proposed future Lantern Festivals have smaller, solar powered lanterns hung on trees. “They don’t need to be massive and they don’t need to be hung on smart polls,’’ she said. Mayor Sarkis Yedelian OAM said next year’s Lantern Festival will be better. “Any festival succeeds if locals are on board and I’m sure next year’s will be more successful,’’ he said. Around one hundred of the one hundred and eighty Lunar New Year lanterns - that could have been publicly erected in Eastwood by the City of Ryde for the February 2024 Lantern Festival - are being distributed to local businesses instead. ☐ Fireproof, solar powered tree lanterns could be a low maintenance and inexpensive alternative to larger lanterns hung on specially anchored street poles.

Tripling the Medicare Incentive to doctors has meant that bulk billing rates across the country are increasing, with more than 180,000 additional trips to the doctor in Australia are being bulk-billed each month. Jerome Laxale MP, Member for Bennelong, said that cost of living pressures meant that strengthening Medicare was important. “Under the Liberals, the cost of seeing a doctor soared. Cracking the 80% mark is a small step, but welcome progress,” he said. “More bulk billing and cheaper medicines will New data compiled by the Department of Health and Aged Care for December 2023 shows the bulk billing rate in Bennelong has now increased to 80%. ☐ Dr Brendon Wong of Maxim Street Medical Centre celebrates the Bulk Billing milestone with federal Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale mean that more people won’t have to defer a trip to the doctor or skip filling out their prescriptions. “These changes are part of a broader range of commitments to help ease cost of living pressures.” Dr Brendon Wong of the Maxim Street Health Hub West Ryde said the government’s recent bulk billing changes have allowed medical professionals to provide increased services, including bulk billing to West Ryde and the wider community. “Any changes that allow us to better support the local community are always welcome and positive,” he said. Combined with initiatives to make medicines cheaper, Australians saved $250 million on 21 million cheaper prescriptions last year. According to the latest available figures, Bennelong’s residents have saved more than $1.8 million thanks to our historic reductions in the PBS copayment, reducing out-of-pocket costs from $42.50 to $30. Researchers have found vaping is a greater and faster acting threat to oral health than smoking, with damage appearing ten times sooner. By tracking the effect of vaping on the microbiome of the mouths of former smokers who now vaped and individuals who both vaped and smoked, it was found that vaping had a far more pronounced impact. Changes to cell composition within the mouth and in the keratin layer that would take five years to manifest in smokers appeared after just six months of vape use. Professor Purnima Kumar, the principal investigator of the Oral Microbial Ecology Laboratory at the University of Michigan, conducted the research initially and presented her findings at the World Dental Congress at the International Convention Centre in Sydney on Tuesday. Professor Purnima Kumar found that vaping could have negative oral health effects ten times faster than smoking cigarettes “The mouth actually provides a huge amount of protection to the body … it is the first organ of impact,” Dr Kumar said. “The mouth sits at the intersection of the environment and human physiology, and sits at the gateway to the body.” If you’re worried about your oral health or that of your child, call Beecroft Elegant Dental Clinic on 9157 9089 to book a check up and get professional advice or book a consultation online at: beecroftelegantdental. com.au/book-online/ Vaping worse than smoking for Oral Health ☐ Professor Purnima Kumar

Wednesday 28 February, 2024 THE WEEKLY TIMES 9 This means Marist College Eastwood was the sixth best performing school across Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS), the third highest ranking boys school and 2023’s second most improved school, recording 107 Distinguished Achievers and two All Rounders, together with a Band 6 rate of 17.7 per cent. Marist College Eastwood Principal, Ms Silvana Rossetti, congratulated Year 12 on a fantastic effort. “Upon seeing our school’s results, I was absolutely elated! “The key to our HSC successes involves a strong emphasis on aligning each student with the right course, unwavering commitment from our dedicated HSC teachers and a shared responsibility across our entire staff from Year 7 to Year 12”. “We understand that the journey to the HSC starts early and demands consistent practice, coupled with targeted intervention”. “What impressed me most about the Class of 2023 was their exceptional work ethic and collegiality. Their readiness to accept feedback and implement it for improvement was commendable”. “This cohort demonstrated remarkable collaboration among themselves and their teachers, showcasing a spirit of cooperation that truly stood out,” she said. “One particular student, I believe, represents what Marist College Eastwood is about. Despite his learning disability, he never wavered from his commitment to his studies, always doing his very best and taking on board the recommendations of his teachers. His work ethic not only earned him a very respectable ATAR, but also five early entry offers. 2024 sees him start his degree in Commerce/IT at Macquarie University. An amazing 66% of our Year 12 students received early offers and every single one of our boys left our College with a pathway, whether it be university, TAFE or employment. This is an outstanding achievement and reflects on the dedication of our staff to the wellbeing of our students”. Marist College Eastwood soared into the top 100 in The Sydney Morning Herald rankings, climbing an astonishing 50 positions and placing 93rd in the State. Tran met Ms Pelegrini - who has an eight year old daughter - in February 2020 when he became a client at the massage parlour where she worked before it shut down due to the COVID pandemic. He told Ms Pelegrini he loved her and sent her hundreds of “harassing” phone calls and text messages. The Brazilian student repeatedly rejected his advances. “You have a problem, really, no is no!’’ she texted him. She also contacted the police but on the day of the murder, Tran broke into her unit where he waited in her bedroom with a kitchen knife. When she and her boyfriend arrived home, Tran attacked her while the boyfriend ran out of the unit to call police. It has been reported that he stabbed her 20 times and when police and paramedics arrived, Ms Pelegrini could not be saved and Tran was arrested at the crime scene. Tran told police she begged him to call an ambulance but he did nothing to help her. “The terror and agony she suffered must have been immense,” Justice Lonergan said. He later pleaded guilty to murder and using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. Mr Tran’s lawyer Nicole Carroll said her client was mentally ill when the murder was committed. “He could not cope with her rejection of him,” Justice Lonergan told the court. Prior to her murder, Ms Pelegrini had been studying nursing at the University of Western Sydney while working at The Residential Gardens Aged Care in Rooty Hill. Her former husband Marcelo Antunes de Ataide said she had devoted her life to their daughter. ‘She was a really good mother, she was the best mum and would do anything for her,” he said. Tran’s family described him as a student who kept to himself. He will be eligible for parole in February 2042. A 28 year sentence was handed down earlier this month to 29-year-old Sydney man, David Tran, who was found guilty of stabbing to death 33-year-old Brazilian nursing student Daiane Pelegrini in her Oatlands home on August 3, 2020. ☐ Daiane Pelegrini

Sydney FC coach Ufuk Talay said the local derby is an opportunity for the Sky Blues to stamp their identity on the game. “You can see that the boys are getting fitter and stronger and we’re creating an identity of what Sydney FC looks like,’’ he said. “We are going to go there to try and win the game, we’re not going to sit back and defend, we are going to go and attack their goal.” Neither club has come out on top in the local derby in recent action with the Wanderers winning three and Sydney FC winning three. This Saturday night’s local derby between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC could be a goal fest with both teams boasting an aggressive, attacking style with question marks hanging over both defences. Matildas’ Olympic qualifier tonight The 8pm match is the second leg of a qualifying round against Uzbekistan with the Matildas taking a crucial 3-0 lead from the first match in Tashkent. The Matildas expect to gain a spot as one of the two teams representing the Asian Football Confederation at the 2024 Olympics and are highly fancied to win this second game against Uzbekistan, which is currently ranked 47th in the world. If the scores are level at full-time in Melbourne, extra time will be played. In a post match interview after the win in Tashkent, Matilda vice-captain Ellie Carpenter (23) said the team intends to put its foot down against Uzbekistan and seal Olympic qualification in style. “Getting three goals there was very important for us to come here and hopefully finish the job,” she said. “We’re three goals up but we don’t go into the game any different and we want to put out a very solid performance and seal Olympic qualifying. “We’ve done it so many times now, we’re very prepared and we need to bring 100 per cent.” Carpenter will become a three-time Olympian in Paris after making her Games debut as a 16-yearold in Rio in 2016 and finishing fourth in Tokyo five years later. “Being an Olympian is such a great achievement and it’s everyone’s dream to go to another Olympics,” she said. Sam Kerr’s injury has left Steph Catley to take the skipper’s armband for the Matildas, with Carpenter elevated to the vice-captaincy. The Matildas are ready to celebrate reaching the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as they head into their final Olympic qualifier against Uzbekistan in Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium tonight. ☐ Olympian Ellie Carpenter celebrates a goal for the Matildas. Golf Club champion’s bunker beating shot Jackson’s skill enabled North Ryde to draw in last week’s round robin format with the highly rated Bonnie Doon Golf Club and saw him pull off an amazing shot over a bunker on the 17th hole. Veteran golf enthusiast Steve Ravallion told The Weekly Times the 24 year old former Epping Boys High student and North Ryde were ‘’a few holes down’’ when he thrilled the crowd with his shot. “He hit the ball at a 45 degree angle with pinpoint accuracy so it rolled down towards the hole on his third shot, so he only needed one more shot as his opponent three putted to see Jackson win the hole,’’ Steve said. “The 18th hole was then halved, bringing the overall match score to 3.5 to complete an awesome back nine comeback by the North Ryde lads which was watched by an enthusiastic local crowd. “If you are Club Champion, you are Club Champion for a reason.” Despite an impressive Plus One handicap, Jackson said his work commitments don’t give him an opportunity to put in the estimated eight hours a day practice needed to turn professional. “And there are many good professionals around,’’ he said. Jackson’s team comprises: Joseph Lin, Tom Crockart, Matt Gordon, Luke Cincotta, Ali McKie and Alex Sghabe with reserves Daniel Fazzolari, Fletcher Thompson and Michael Hooper. The Manager is Ben Brown, the coach is Alex Emmerson and the Club’s General Manager is Anthony Ryan. The North Ryde Golf Club recently landscaped the course. “It is a decent design with interesting holes and some stunning water features,’’ Steve said. The North Ryde Golf Club hosts Long Reef Golf Club in an upcoming contest. North Ryde Golf Club’s Club Champion Jackson Fennell continues to impress with more outstanding individual performances. ☐ Jackson in action at North Ryde Golf Club ☐ Sydney’s local derby is often aggressive and controversial - a plus for fans!

He was assisted by a superb pass from 18 year old rookie Lachlan Galvin from St Gregory’s College in Campbelltown.
