I speak here from experience! Yet I also know that he has readily apologised to people who he may have treated harshly. What I most admired about him was that in many ways he was a great priest. To be with him is to be aware that he was very prayerful and that he readily upheld and defended church teaching when it was necessary. In these ways for me he was a role model. Sadly, in many quarters he was unfairly ma- ligned within and beyond the church. A case in point was The Melbourne Response of offering ex-gratia payments to alleged abuse vic- tims, the logic here was that these people would be spared the trauma of a civil case. Anyone was still free to take their complaint to be resolved civilly. Also, it needs to be remembered that the High Court quashed his own charges of abuse, and this is quite distinct from overturning a conviction. This judgement meant that in this case he was an innocent man who suffered unfairly a prison term. I have every confidence that he will hear these words from God; “Well done good and faithful servant.” Father Martin R Maunsell is the former parish priest of St Kevin’s Catholic Church in Eastwood. For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love. Member for Ryde, Victor Dominello, said he was delighted to share the new designs with the community. “These designs follow a significant amount of engagement with the local community, clinicians and key healthcare stakeholders as well as feedback from staff and consumers,” Mr Dominello said. “The feedback has informed key design considerations such as heritage, the environment and green space to create a welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.” Liberal candidate for Ryde, Jordan Lane, said the unveiling of the latest designs and upcoming commencement of early works brought the Ryde community a step closer to accessing innovative, outstanding healthcare. “As someone who was born at this very hospital, in Denistone House, I am genuinely excited about how this investment from our Government will deliver the great health services for our community, while also preserving its unique heritage,” he said. Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said the redevelopment will futureproof healthcare in the local area. “Once complete, the Ryde Hospital redevelopment will deliver a new and expanded emergency department and intensive care unit, new theatres, new purpose-built ambulatory care centre, new paediatric short stay unit and expanded medical Imaging,” he said. The redevelopment would also include more adult overnight inpatient beds, improved landscaping, urban spaces and car parking for patients and workers. Central to the design is connections with existing onsite heritage buildings such as Denistone House and The Stables and the Blue Gum High Forest as well as green spaces to create a welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors. In response to feedback from the local community and key agencies, changes have been made to the carpark plans to include a new multi-storey car park off Denistone Road and ground-level parking off Ryedale Road. The updated plans are expected to be placed on public exhibition in the coming weeks. A final State Significant Development Application (SSDA) will be submitted in mid-2023, seeking approval for the final design and main construction works for the redevelopment. HPAC has been appointed the early works contractor for the redevelopment and will commence works in the coming weeks, with main works expected to begin in late 2023. The NSW Government announced in November 20212 that the existing Ryde Hospital campus was the most suitable location for delivery of service. That announcement followed extensive consultation with hospital staff and the local community to consider whether the hospital should be relocated to the Macquarie University North Ryde campus. The $479 million redevelopment of Ryde Hospital has reached another major milestone with the designs of the new precinct unveiled and early works set to commence next month. ☐ NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard, Premier Dominic Perrottet, Liberal state candidate for Ryde Jordan Lane and Ryde MP and Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello at Ryde Hospital on Friday for the release of the upgraded hospital designs. 4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 18 January, 2023 Our Council is grateful for the work of volunteers, service providers, clubs and so many others. On 26 January, we will formally recognise these outstanding contributions through our annual Citizen of the Year Awards. A citizen, young citizen, sportsperson and community group will be named from the nominations received through public submissions. On this occasion, we will also welcome new citizens to Hunters Hill in our Australia Day Ceremony. Australia Day is a time to celebrate what it means to be an Australian. We will be holding a free community event at Bedlam Bay, from 12pm to 4pm, for our community to enjoy a relaxed family-friendly afternoon of food and fun, through stalls, activities and performers. In hosting this ‘Australia Day at the Bay’ event we are assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council. Check our website for more details: www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/events. Action on inclusion In Hunters Hill, one in nine people live with a disability. We also have a rapidly ageing population. Making our area a more accessible and fairer place for people living with a HUNTER’S HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor Zac Miles disability is a constantly evolving process, assisted by a Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). A draft of our renewed DIAP is on public exhibition until 31 January. The plan outlines our Council’s commitment over the next four years to making our local area a better place to live, work and visit for people living with a disability or health condition. Representatives of service providers, people living with disabilities, carers, interest groups and staff from our Council provided valuable input into the creation of the draft plan. To view the plan and find out how to share your feedback, visit our website www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/diap or phone our Customer Service team on 9879 9400. My invitation must have gone astray in the mail. Season’s Greetings. ROBERT ALLAN Hunters Hill Culpability of our youth Dear Sir, Neurologists have revealed to us that 21-year-olds’ brains are still not fully formed - ie they are not yet adults. For this reason and because of his apparent genuine remorse, I think Dominic Perrottet deserves to be excused for a serious breach of social ethics. This raises a second issue: the charging and imprisonment of children as young as TWT welcomes letters from our readers. You can submit yours at: weeklytimes.com.au/letters Full name, address and telephone number MUST be supplied for letters sent by mail, even if not for publication. Send to: TWT PO Box 123, Ryde NSW 1680 Missing invitation by Hunter’s Hill Clr Richard Quinn To The POINT It also provided the opportunity for our community to review and articulate what we treasure about our locality as we envision the future and says.. “Hunters Hill is renowned for its well-preserved heritage buildings, sandstone walls, magnificent tree canopy and bushland, surrounded by its pristine waterways and sandstone seawalls.” We have an extraordinary natural and built heritage which I hope will never be taken for granted. From time to time, some of us have the opportunity to get wonderful views over our magnificent local government area from the heights – either from a window seat on a flight coming in to land at Sydney airport or maybe from the tower at St Joseph’s College, the highest physical point in our local area. Personally, I never tire of those spectacular views. In November, some other Councillors and I were able to view the resplendent lilac canopy of Jacaranda blooms that are a striking visual feature across our local area in late Spring each year from the Joeys tower. It is definitely a sight to behold! Having been on the staff at Joeys, I have also had the opportunity to view photos of our local area in the College archives taken from the tower over the years since the early 20th century. What is most striking is how green our local area has become over more recent decades, having been previously cleared by early settlers in the late 19th century. Even photos taken in the 1970s and 1980s show a more sparse tree canopy than is evident today. And those photos also reveal the intensification of building development that has taken place over time. Many of the sandstone and timber homes in earlier photos are gone, but several still remain, in some cases surrounded or partly hidden by more recently constructed buildings. And whilst we must be people of our time with a mind for the future, it is also important that we always recognise and celebrate all that is good about our past and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy our natural and built heritage. Hunters Hill Council is known for its prescriptive planning controls, which seek to give due regard to our natural and built heritage whilst also responding to current community needs. I also note that there are similarly tight planning controls in Arrowtown in New Zealand, in the Cotswolds and Yorkshire Dales in England, in Santa Barbara and Carmel in the USA. These are places that generations of travellers love to visit to enjoy the natural and built environmental heritage that distinguish these localities. As we begin the second year of our 10- year Community Plan, let’s all continue to “enjoy and embrace the lifestyle, restaurants and cafes, and quiet ambience that complement Australia’s oldest garden suburb”. Richard Quinn is an independent councillor and former Mayor of Hunter’s Hill. Australia Day 2023 Australia Day bursts into life across TWT Territory with celebrations in the City of Ryde, Hunters Hill, Epping, Hornsby, Lane Cove, the City of Parramatta, the City of Canada Bay and Sydney Harbour. Year 12 HSC accelerant shows no sign of slowing down Benjamin Sestanovic (pictured), who is at the beginning of his Year 12 HSC journey, has not only completed four HSC subjects as an accelerated student, but has also earned formidable state rankings across 2021 and 2022. He is also heavily involved in debating, public speaking and service learning opportunities. Benjamin’s achievements to date include: • French Continuers 98 (when in Year 10) – top 10 in the state • Mathematics Advanced 100 (when in Year 11) – 9th in the state • Mathematics Extension 47 (when in Year 11) • French Extension 46 (when in Year 11) – 3rd in the state The accelerated programs at Joeys provide an opportunity for boys who are motivated and ready to stretch themselves and their skill set. This year 47 students across Mathematics, Studies of Religion 2 Unit, Business Studies and French Extension participated in one or more subjects. “Congratulations to Benjamin, a young man who is equally adept at writing prose with flair, conversing fluently in French or solving the most challenging mathematics problems,” Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Mr Michael Blake, said. Director of Teaching and Learning, Mr Matthew Bookallil, said the school believed in the power of accelerating students. “Our role is to open the door for Benjamin and others to explore and excel,” he said. Benjamin is testament to the emphasis Joeys places on tailoring education to fit the individual. His academic talents have been able to flourish unhindered at the College. The school said Benjamin was the embodiment of its motto: “Strive for better things.” A student from St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill (‘Joeys’) has participated in accelerated HSC subjects and achieved impressive results, reflecting well on the College’s capacity to encourage and promote high-level learners. The 72-year-old was elected as a federal sen- ator for NSW in 2019, following two years serv- ing within the state, be- fore being re-elected in May 2022 to a six-year term in the Senate. When does the Year Of The Water Rabbit start ? The Year of The Water Rabbit starts on January 22 in 2023 which is the first day of the first moon of the Lunar Calendar. On the 19th of January, Chinese people like to carry out a thorough cleaning of the kitchen. This cleaning is called Worship the Kitchen God and represents a wish to put away old things and welcome the New Year with a fresh start. What’s your prediction for the Year Of The Water Rabbit? The general prediction for 2023 is not so good especially for those born in the Years Of The Rabbit, Dragon, Horse, Chicken, and Rat. These stars are very powerful and may be unstoppable. They tend to be pessimistic and stubborn with a tendency to barrel ahead to a dead end. Can it be a lucky year for some people? It depends on the individual’s own zodiac year, and whether or not they are compatible with the Year Of The Rabbit. The most compatible zodiacs are Goat, Pig and Dog. For those born in the Year Of The Goat, regardless of wether you are a salaried person or a business owner, as long as you work hard you will be able to achieve good results in the Year Of The Water Rabbit. What is your prediction for businesses in the Year Of The Water Rabbit? The Year Of The Water ☐ Eastwood’s Chinese Astrologer Hugh Lee OAM is pictured with his lucky Water Rabbit. VictorDominello MP State Member for Ryde Happy Lunar New Year Wishing you good health and happiness P: (02) 9808 3288 E: [email protected] Mail PO Box 736, Ryde NSW 1680 Ground Floor, 5-9 Devlin Street, Ryde NSW 2112 ☐ Tame a lion for Asian Lunar New Year in the City of Ryde, the City of Parramatta and the City of Canada Bay. Rabbit could be a good year for some businesses with many looking ahead after the pandemic during the Year of the Tiger. Businesses should recover from this once in a life time crisis this year. What are the characteristics of people born in a Year Of The Rabbit? Those born in the Year Of The Rabbit are considered gentle people with an amiable personality and able to adjust to any situation. Rabbits in general are patient and responsible, though they may have a tendency to daydream and be at times, quite shy. THE RABBIT 2023

The NSW Government recently announced it will be providing $500 million in funding to help repair flood-damaged roads across the State. With 320 kilometres of road network extending across the City of Ryde, this is a welcome announcement. While Council staff have been working tirelessly and proactively to fix our roads, this funding provides a boost to potentially help us do more and, in some cases, sooner. I look forward to receiving more detailed information from the NSW Government on the allocation of funding. In the meantime I encourage our residents to continue to report any potholes so that Council has all the information we need to respond as quickly as possible. Residents can report potholes and other issues online at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/ report, call our Customer Service Centre on (02) 9952 8222 or visit us in person at 1 Pope Street, Ryde. LAST year’s Gladesville-Hornsby soccer season saw a new sponsorship agreement in place between local business Lady Anne Funerals and West Ryde Rovers soccer. Karen Laing, Director of Lady Anne Funerals, is well known in the Ryde district for her commitment to the community through sponsorship, fundraising and networking activities. Based in West Ryde, Karen and her staff of compassionate and caring women provide professional and personal service and support to grateful families coping with the loss of a loved one. Appropriately, the sponsorship assisted with the provision of a new playing strip for Rovers’ top senior women’s team. West Ryde Rovers is a not for profit organisation run by volunteers, providing opportunities for local women, men, girls and boys to be involved in community sport. It is through the generous support of local businesses that the club continues to grow and thrive as it enters its 57th year. Wednesday 18 January, 2023 THE WEEKLY TIMES 15 Gutsy young Epping tennis star, Rinky Hijikata, triumphs in five set thriller It took Hijikata four hours and 25 minutes to wear down 128th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann, but his efforts in winning his first singles match at a major were recognised by the vocal court-eight crowd, who gave the young Australian a standing ovation. Hijikata will next face Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, a three-time semifinalist in Melbourne. “I couldn’t have done it without the support today. I’m so grateful for everyone coming out,” Hijikata, 21, said in his on-court interview. “That is the most fun match I’ve ever played in my life.” Hijikata, a former student of The Kings School, shot to prominence at last year’s US Open when he took a set of Rafael Nadal in the first round. He relished the crowd support on Monday night, consistently revving them up as he manufactured a seemingly impossible comeback after losing the first two sets. Hijikata, ranked 169 in the world, burned his first two match points on serve but sealed his third, before falling to the ground and then punching the air as he celebrated. He joined two other Australians, Jason Kubler and John Millman, in progressing to the second round of the men’s draw. Kubler beat Argentine Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to continue his incredible resurgence, while Millman outlasted Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-7 (8/10), 7-5, 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 6-3 on the same day countryman Nick Kyrgios was forced out of the tournament with a knee injury. Just like Hijikata, Millman repaid the faith of Australian Open organisers with his Melbourne Park wildcard, delivering a typical five-set marathon victory in four hours and six minutes. It is the sixth time Millman has reached the second round at his home major. In the women’s draw, Olivia Gadecki made the second round but fellow Australians Talia Gibson and Storm Hunter both made early exits. Gibson bowed out with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to French qualifier Clara Burel and Hunter lost 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 to China’s Xinyu Wang. Anthony Stavrinos Wildcard and former Epping resident Rinky Hijikata has repaid the faith shown in him by Australian Open organisers with a remarkable come-from-behind win at Melbourne Park. ☐ Rinky Hijikata collapses in celebration after taking out a five set thriller against No. 128-ranked German, Yannick Hanfmann; and below, Hijikata in action. Hunters Hill Sailing Club has safe sailing months The club will host TRY-SAILING and LEARN TO SAIL classes to teach young sailors the basics of safe sailing and how to respond to emergencies on the water. “Wind and water are constantly changing as the young sailor adapts to tactics, strategy, rules, self-reliance, self-confidence and team work,’’ a Sailing Club spokesperson said. “Sailing is also physically and mentally demanding, while sailing a boat well in a competitive environment takes many years, all valuable experiences for life.” The Club website - www.huntershillsailingclub.org.au - has details of complimentary sailing lessons. “Sailors continue to enjoy the use of a club boat and we look forward to your child joining us for our complimentary session,’’ the spokes- person said. The VAR technology is used in the ALeague and most major football leagues worldwide after it was introduced several years ago to assist referee decisions and eliminate referee mistakes. But like many fans, Mr Raciti believes it is interfering with the passion of the game as players score goals only to anxiously wait for a VAR verdict before celebrating. “Some players are definitely hesitant, fans are hesitant,’’ he said. “It ruined the World Cup and everyone hates it, clubs, managers, players, fans and you don’t see anyone jumping up and down saying how good it is.’’ Many English Premier League fans also deride VAR appeals as the modern day equivalent of whinging players hassling a linesman to challenge a referee decision. Nor is VAR infallible according to Mr Raciti. “The VAR is making mistakes, referees make mistakes, so what’s the difference?’’ he asked. He said it is only used the A-League because only the A-League can afford it. “This would be way too costly for us,’’ he said. APIA LEICHHARDT Honorary President Tony Raciti is fed up with the video assisted referee VAR system and would love to see it scrapped. ☐ Crystal Palace fans protest against the VAR system. ☐ Tony Raciti. More than 500,000 tickets sold for FIFA Women’s World Cup And you don’t need to worry about missing out - more tickets are on the way. As preparations for the tournament reach their final stages, fans from 129 countries have bought tickets to the inaugural 32-team tournament, with fans from the two co-hosting nations leading the way, followed by the United States, England, Qatar, Germany, China, Canada, the Republic of Ireland and France. The most-sought-after game is the final on August 20 at Stadium Australia in Sydney, while FIFA is aiming to move the Matildas’ opening group match against the Republic of Ireland from the smaller-capacity Sydney Football Stadium (capacity 42,500) to the venue of the final (83,500) due to high demand. It’s understood no games have been completely exhausted, and FIFA has scheduled more and that more sales phases before the tournament’s opening games on July 20, including to all three Matildas group games as well as the final. More tickets have been sold to this year’s tournament than were sold in the first six months of the previous World Cup in France in 2019, although it is difficult to draw direct comparisons due to 2023’s expanded format and the rapid cultural and financial shifts in the women’s game over the past four years. Three of the five-most-attended women’s football matches of all time occurred last year, with Barcelona’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg setting a new record of 91,648 at the Camp Nou, breaking the record previously set by the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the USA and China at the Rose Bowl, which took place in front of 90,185 people. This past weekend in English FA matches involving Aussies, Sam Kerr’s Chelsea faced Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley’s Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in London where a total of 46,811 tickets had been sold. The 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada reached a record attendance level of 1.35 million people, with an average of 26,028 fans per game, while France totalled 1.13 million people at an average of 21,756. At least five nations will make their Women’s World Cup debuts in 2023 — including Morocco, Zambia, the Philippines, Vietnam and the Republic of Ireland — with three more a possibility after the final inter-continental play-off tournament in New Zealand in February, for which tickets are now also on sale. That play-off tournament will feature 10 teams — Portugal, Cameroon, Thailand, Chile, Haiti, Senegal, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, and Panama — competing for three remaining spots in the finals. Tickets to the 2023 Women’s World Cup can be bought via FIFA’s official website: fifa.com/fifaplus/en/ tickets World football’s governing body, FIFA, has announced that more than 500,000 tickets have already been sold for the 2023 FIFA Womens World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

By the one eyed Tiger Luke prepares for a grand final Local legend Luke Brooks is ready to win a grand final this season and reckons his game will benefit from a new coach and new signings. Tim recently signed established representative forwards Api Koroisau, John Bateman, Isaiah Papali’ and David Klemmer who give Luke more firepower to work with in attack and significant defensive coverage to allow him more time and space to weave his magic from dummy half. As most of my readers would know, twenty eight year old Luke is a local Holy Cross College graduate who has won the Dally M Half Back Of The Year Award and has been compared with league legend Andrew Johns. Such a comparison has led to some ridiculous speculation in the Daily Screamers that Luke would join Johns at The Frights but I can tell all Tigers’ fans that Luke is a one club player and is as loyal as they come. He’s been working hard to overcome a leg injury as well as training with Benji Marshall in the off season. Api and Benji are particularly influential, Luke tells me. He says Api really gets the forwards going for us and when the halves want the ball he’ll get it to them. A great player, Luke says he’s excited to play alongside Api. Luke played alongside Benji for several seasons and he reckons Benji is keen to share his knowledge. “Not much has changed, he’s still the same bloke,” Luke says of Benji. “Just to learn from such a smart footy brain, it can only be good for my footy and I’m really e n j o y i n g l e a r n i n g under Benji.” Luke says pre-season so far has been hard but fun. He said there have been a lot of smiling faces and he’s really enjoyed it so far. “It’s a credit to the coaches coming in, making it a fun environment and all the new players we’ve got too have given us a real spring in our step,” he said. And make no mistake about it, it is the right time to raid ma-inlaws’ pension fund and bet the money on a grand final finish for the Tigers. “It’s everything, that’s what we play for and we want to go all the way, that’s our main motivation,’’ Luke says. “We know where we’ve been the last few years, so it’s a massive goal for us.” ☐ Luke Brooks (centre) will be cel- ebrating more tries for the Tigers this season.
