LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Students,

You have come to a very important point in your school career.
Up until now you have experienced a wide range of subjects,
but the time spent on each has been limited and you have had
little choice in what you have studied. In Key Stage 4 you will be
preparing for external examinations with more time allocated
to studying subjects you have selected. In accordance with the
requirements of the National Curriculum, you will continue to
study core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science, PSHCE
and Physical Education, but, for the first time, you will also have
an element of choice about your learning pathway.

It is important that you think carefully about I hope you find the information in this
your option choices as they will have a direct booklet useful when making your option
impact on your post-16 pathway, university choices – please do seek advice if you are

What is the English Baccalaureate?

In 2010, the government announced its intention to recognise individual student achievements
across a core of selected academic subjects. They call this the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).
The aim is to offer students the opportunity to study a broad range of academic subjects up to the
age of 16.

What subjects are in the English Baccalaureate?

The English Baccalaureate is not a qualification in itself. It is a measure which recognises students’
achievements across a core of selected academic subjects:
English
Mathematics
Two good Sciences*
History or Geography
A Foreign Language**

Why have the government chosen these subjects for the English
Baccalaureate?

The subjects the government has included are designed to ensure that all students have the
opportunity to study a broad range of core subjects, ensuring that doors are not closed off to them
in terms of future progression. For example, for students hoping to go to university, The Russell
Group*** guide on making informed choices for post-16 education identifies ‘facilitating
subjects’ at A-Level. These are subjects most likely to be required or preferred for entry to degree
courses and ones that will keep the most options open for students. The subjects they identify are
those included in the English Baccalaureate – Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry,
Geography, History and Languages (classical and modern).

* Either Combined Science or two from: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science
** The languages covered are wider than those offered in the School Curriculum (French). If any student has the
skills and knowledge necessary to sit a GCSE in an additional language it may be possible to arrange for the student to
take the examination. Students will need to be able to read, write and speak in the chosen language to a high standard.

The subjects you choose in Year 10 will affect what you can do in the future. You should go for a
good balance of subjects to keep your career options open. Choosing subjects that suit you and
your abilities is very important.

What Are Your Future Career Aspirations?

The writer Annie Dillard said we spend on average 90,000 hours at work in a lifetime. We want you
to end up doing a job that you find interesting and rewarding. You may already have a very clear
idea of what career interests you, but don’t worry if you have no idea at all.
Being a working adult may seem like a very long time in the future but the option choices that you
make may affect the choices available for you in the future, so it is important that you start doing
some research now.
It’s really important that you give some thought to the bigger picture when selecting your options:
• What are the different types of career pathways / jobs available that link to different subjects?
• Have you researched what qualifications are considered good preparation for these careers?
• Will the courses you are choosing link or help you with your chosen career or next steps?
• Are you good at the subjects you have picked and are you prepared to work hard?
• Do your option choices compliment each other?
• Does it help you to keep your future options open?

Where You Can Get Help And Advice?

When it comes to choosing subjects and careers, you will find there are many people ready to help
you, but it is important for you to do as much research as you can to look at all the options before
you make your final choices.
Your subject teachers know exactly what studying a subject in KS4 will involve and can advise you
whether it is right for you.
The staff around you will all have had personal experience in making these choices - so talk to
them as they may have some personal insight they can share.

• You will be emailed your own options form which will show you directed curriculum. This is for
you to use when considering your choices. You may wish to cross out those subjects you are
sure you do not want to study, use a ? for those you are not sure about, and tick those you are
very interested in studying.

• A second copy will be completed during your 1-2-1 options meeting; this will take place
virtually during the week of Monday 1 - Friday 5 February 2021.

• This copy will be emailed home so your parents or carers can see the choices you made at your
interview.
