2 Dear Class of 2023 When you started as Year 11s we could never have predicted that your exams would be cancelled and that you wouldn’t be at school for the last few months of the academic year. As a cohort of students who share a birthday between 1 September 2003 and 31 August 2004, there is probably no other demographic group who have sacrificed what you have sacrificed. You worked so hard for your exams and for the celebrations that should lead on naturally from that, and it was all taken away. You did not get your chance to shine. You have to remember however, that none of what you have done over the last five years is wasted. All the knowledge and skills you have developed and the experiences that you have had have shaped you, and made you the amazing individuals you are. Your exams would have been a tiny snapshot moment in time, of a tiny fraction of what you really are and will be. As a year group you were truly amazing, you coped brilliantly right through to the end and you accepted the situation that you found yourself Headteacher’s Message in. In just the two years that I was privileged to know you, I saw a group of young people that grew in maturity and, for many of you, physically in height too. You were dedicated and committed to your studies, you were kind and you had ambitions, hopes and dreams. My fear for any one I teach is that they will lose their purpose and never actually reach those hopes and dreams; despite all the difficulties you may face please promise yourself to always strive for better and for greater. I truly hope that despite the last 6 months you have gone on to wonderful new experiences and opportunities post 16. I also hope you look back fondly on your time at Carrington School and that somewhere along the 5 years you met a member of staff or two who helped shape who you are today. In the end, life isn’t about numbers, it’s about stories. Grades are important, but it’s the stories we tell each other that strengthen our memories and our sense of community. All the stuff you have learnt here has shaped the wonderful adults you will become. We don’t just teach you the curriculum to get your grades – we teach you that stuff because you have a right to know it and because it’s your heritage and your future and because we want you to be the best you can be. I thank you for your contribution to Carrington School, for making us proud and for giving us chance to see you grow. Just remember that in years to come you will be telling your kids that you were part of ‘that’ year group. I wish you every success and happiness because “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” (Eleanor Roosevelt). Miss Kerry Oakley Headteacher

8 AUSTEN Carrington School Dear 11 Austen, Firstly, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate each and every one of you for the progress you have made, getting to this stage is a huge achievement and you should all be very proud of yourselves. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey this year. It has been a privilege to watch you all grow into the fantastic people you have become. My mornings will not be the same now that you have all gone, I will miss George’s wonderful good mornings, the insane stories you would tell me, and as odd as it sounds even all the moaning about coats, uniform, homework, exams and anything else you could think of! Finally, please never forget that success is not merely defined by grades but also by the character you exhibit and the positive impact you make on those around you. The most important thing for you to remember as you go into the big wide world, is that with enough determination and resilience you really can achieve anything you dream of, and on that note, I will leave you with a poem at the end of this section, written by our very own Euan… Miss Amy Price

You’ve been a great group ever since I started being your tutor in Year 8. Always the smartest looking and most alphabetically ordered tutor group in assembly you are a credit to the school. I did enjoy seeing your induction day photo from your 1st day at school. You have grown so much but your smiles are the same. Good luck in everything you choose to do in the future. Work hard, have fun, and try and keep smiling whatever challenges life throws at you. Please do keep in touch and pop in to say hello every now and then. Best wishes, Dr Cameron Dear 11 Barrow, I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck and success for the future. I could not have asked for better tutor group. You have listened patiently to my stories. My Thursday and Friday mornings have not been the same since you have left. I really do miss you popping in to say good morning and ask how I am. You are a kind and well mannered group. Thank you for making my job easy. You are a credit to the school and really do look forward to hearing about what you will go onto. Stay in touch, Miss Leung

Dear 11 Hawking, I have only known you all for the best part of a year, but trust me when I say it feels much, much longer than that! I have got to know each of you and have shared many laughs during tutor time. Working with you all has been part of the process of me getting to know you all. Together we have overcome any challenges that we have faced and you have all developed into wonderful young people that are about to start the next chapter of their lives. The ski trip we went on in February I don’t think I’ll ever forget! From the coach Journey (all 23 hours), to the food (That chocolate pudding!), to the actual skiing (and me getting lost on the mountain!) So many fantastic memories that I hope you remember for as long as I will. What will I miss about you? I will miss the banter in the mornings, hearing about your lives, and seeing all of you, but I won’t miss telling Jcan to take his coat off (sorry Jcan)! I hope you all stay in contact with me as I would like to hear about how you get on in the future and will always be available if you need anything. Please always try your best and to remember to reach for the stars! Mr Barker

Watching all of you grow and develop over the years has been lovely to see believe it or not and I’m very proud of the young adults you’ve become. You will probably laugh when you read this but I am going to miss you all- your energy, your humour (or attempt at?), especially your unique personalities. As you move on to the next chapter in your lives, I have no doubt that you will continue to accomplish the great things you put your minds to. I wish all of you the very best with all of your future endeavours and we all can’t wait to see/hear what the future holds for you so do keep in touch and let us know. Remember to stay true to yourselves, follow your passions, and never stop learning. Also, remember and don’t forget us if you win the lottery! Oprah Winfrey once said “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.” So with love, goodbye and best wishes for a bright future ahead. Spread your wings and fly 11 Nightingale! Warmest regards, Ms N Messina-Persade

45 Dear 11 Seacole, A farewell is never easy especially for me as I am a sentimental person, and always in a way feel sad. For the past few days, I have thought a lot about all my students. Every day, I have felt a mix of emotions, that range from sadness, but also ends now with gratitude and hope. The sadness comes from the fact that I may never see some of you again. Only the memories of the times we’ve shared has made me feel better. For that, I am very thankful. As I say goodbye to you all, I urge you to be kind to one another and to the new people that are surely going to come your way. I ask that you love and care for the people you have in your lives and that you welcome new people into your lives openly. The world outside of these walls can seem rosy, but it’s not always the case but I am left feeling hopeful about each one of you. You’ll be just fine, and I know that. Good luck, and goodbye to all of you! Mr Alex Muendo Class of 2023 SEACOLE
