How time flies. It doesn’t seem possible that it was almost 9 years ago that I put pen to paper for my first letter to the ‘Village Voice’. In those days the publication was produced ‘in house’ in St John’s by a small team aided by a much From the Vicarage.... New Life larger set of villagers who distributed it around the village. The latter has not changed but following the sad death of Bob Charlton, who did so much in the village as well, it was apparent that a new production approach was needed. So, we took the large, and costly, step of getting the Village Voice professionally printed each month. The printing quality improvement was massive. There must be few, if any?, villages of our size in this country who manage to produce and distribute something of the standard of the Village Voice to almost every home within their parish boundaries. This is something we can all be proud of. Remember it remains our Village Magazine so please forward articles and suggestions to the Editor, Anne Robinson. Over the last 9 years I have written over 80 Village Voice reflections. This will be my last as I retire (again) in June. My final Sunday at St John’s will be on June 16th. It would be lovely to see many of you there at the 10am Service. It has been my privilege to get to know many of you over the years – at events in the church and in the wider community. Many were joyful, some were sad. I have officiated at far more funerals than weddings, with Christenings coming somewhere in between. On each occasion it has been my honour to be besides you at those precious times. As a village we all went through the dark Covid times together, when it was truly wonderful to see the response so many made to the needs of others around them. It is a strange fact that of all the funerals I have taken, only two were the direct result of Covid and one of those was long after the lockdowns was over. St John’s remains a church and place of quiet and reflection for all villagers – whether you have faith or not. The new garden area in the churchyard is already proving to have an important role in all this. We

live in a scenic area, Dormansland is a well kept secret, as is the beauty of the St John’s building. I have been so fortunate to spend time here and with Ros’s grave in the churchyard you may be sure that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. St Paul spent several years of his missionary life in the city of Ephesus. When he left for the last time he left them some words. I leave them to you all. ‘Now I commend you to the care of God and to the message of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you the blessings God has for all his people.’ (Acts 20: 32 Good News Bible). May God bless you all. Nigel Hinton LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH 3.30-5PM ST JOHN'S CHURCH, DORMANSLAND IN THE CENTENARY ROOM. A SNACK IS PROVIDED. Dormansland Parish Council On the 25th April the Annual Parish Assembly was held at the Dormansland Community Memorial Hall. The Annual Parish Assembly is an opportunity for members of the public to learn what activities the various organisations’ in the village carry out during the year. It is also an opportunity for residents to raise any issues with the Parish Council. We were delighted to welcome Mr and Mrs Vasey representing Fair Trade and they bought many goodies including chocolate, coffee, olive oil and dates to the meeting which were available for purchase. Fair Trade will be holding an event in mid-September at the Lingfield Community Centre so do watch out for further details. Bill Stevenson, Chairman of the RH7 history group entertained us with an informative and very interesting talk on the history of Dormansland. This included the Jutes, the Vikings, the areas of common land, iron smelting, a history of the two world wars, the coming of the railway, and the ‘nonconformist’ attitude of Dormansland residents. Bill and the history society will be bringing their latest exhibition to the Dormansland Community Memorial Hall later in the summer, do watch out for it. Cllr Richard Dandy led proceedings and a report was issued and can be found on the website show casing the village clubs and organisations’. If you are part of a club and want to be included in next year’s report please contact Jacqui, our Clerk. It was good to see so many residents present, including a past Parish Council Chair and there was plenty of time to chat and enjoy refreshments prepared by Cllr Cheryl Roux. Dates of upcoming Meetings: Full Council Meeting 5th June 2024 at 18.30 Full Council Meeting 3rd July 2024 at 18.30 Both meetings will be held at The Dormansland War Memorial Hall, Plough Road, Dormansland, Surrey RH7 6PS.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN UPDATE: The Dormansland Neighbourhood Plan is in the process of being brought up to date by the Parish Council. As the District Council has now formally withdrawn its Local Plan 2033, it would be prudent for the area to have some additional planning policies in place to ensure the unique character of our area, its open spaces, and buildings of character, are protected with polices specifically for Dormansland. The planning consultants who produced the first draft of the neighbourhood plan, have been commissioned to produce a design guide, which has been partly funded by government grant funding. It will provide polices that will need to be followed by applicants to ensure their proposals are in keeping with the rural character of the area. In addition, the Parish Council are proposing to recommend some additions to the Tandridge List of Buildings of Character, as this provides additional planning protections as set out in the national legislation. It is for buildings which don’t quite meet the criteria for Listing by English Heritage but are important locally, architecturally, or historically, and are valued by the community. The working documents will be available for everyone to see through a link on the Dormansland Parish Council website and a public consultation will be provided for you to comment on later in the year, when they are finished. Thanks also to friends who helped set up in the morning, helped with advertising and those who donated and propagated plants. THE RETURN OF A DORMANSLAND CARNIVAL FAVOURITE! Many older residents in Dormansland may recall the days when the local carnival had a Carnival Queen, a marching Brass Band, a tug of war competition (between neighbouring pubs and public services) and a rather difficult horse to ride called Betsy. Slowly but surely these regular attractions have disappeared or been replaced, well that is until now …. as Betsy has been found! Betsy is a unique and very popular attraction - a revolving horse, made by Ford Manor carpenter Fritz Parkes who lived in Ford Manor Cottages in Hollow Lane. His wife Win was especially well known, a lifelong resident of the village she worked in the post office from leaving school to when she retired. Sadly, Betsy disappeared from our village many years ago – loaned to another village close by she never returned. Well that is until now! She was offered back to the Carnival earlier this year and the committee are glad to have Betsy back nearly as good as new. Following a quick tidy-up and a lick of paint, and all decked out in this year’s Sci Fi theme, our revolving horse will be making her return appearance. Do you dare to try and ride her! However, Besty certainly hasn’t been idle during her time away and indeed has quite a story to tell. After years in storage and general decay, an ex-Dormansland resident (who works for British Airways (BA)) agreed to take Betsy on. The rotating mechanism (that makes up her middle section) was broken so Saturday 13th July from 1pm Sci-Fi

Colin Gane (a now retired BA Engineer experienced in composite repairs and cabin refurbishment) brought her back to full working order, and decked her out in BA carpet livery. Renamed Dobbin, our trusty horse has spent the past 10 years raising money for charity:- The BA corporate charity ‘Flying Start’ raising funds for Comic Relief Has been involved in special fund raising events in the BA hangar at London Gatwick (LGW) – e.g. Blind cricket, with that red nose! Has supported the siblings of children registered with Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, all decked out in tinsel. Appeared at the Hickstead Arena Polo where Dobbin raised funds for ‘Dreamflight’ which supports young children across the UK aged between 8 and 14, all of whom either have a serious illness or disability. Each year in October the charity works with British Airways to take these children on a truly memorable holiday. Many of the children that flew to Florida have never experienced a holiday or even a trip abroad before due to the complexities involved with their illnesses. Hickstead Royal International Horse Show. Once again raising funds for ‘Dreamflight’. Here celebrities, and their children, joined in the fun! Alistair Stewart’s son (the ITV News Reader), Shane Breen’s children (a top International Show Jumper), Charlie Dimmock with Tameeka (one of the Dreamflighters) and many more. However, with storage once again proving a problem, Dobbin was offered back to the Dormansland Carnival who are extremely happy to welcome him home.

We think he/she must be around 60 years old, but if you know better then please get in touch at the address below! And if you have any historical pictures we would really love to see them. We Need Your Bright Ideas! And to mark this third (rather Dr Who) regeneration we are looking for a new name, so can you help? Entries should be submitted in writing - placed in the box at the foot of Dobbin on Carnival Day - and do remember to include your name, age and contact details, along with a brief description of how/why you have chosen the name so we can get in touch/credit the winner. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible try to ride this trusty steed at Carnival again. All funds raised go to support local groups and associations, and anyone who is successful will have that added satisfaction of joining an elite group of people who have managed to get across! Dormans Evening WI “DEWI” www.dewi.chessck.co.uk 1964 to 2024 Our May meeting was taken up with a discussion on the WI National Resolution "Dental Health Matters" and the arguments were debated for and against this. Our delegate was then given a mandate to vote on our behalf at the NFWI's Annual Meeting to be held at the Royal Albert Hall in June. After business, the game Room 101 was played and members put forward their suggestions for entry – these included road signs which are either badly situated and those left behind long after the work has taken place. Many adverts were included plus makeover programmes which leave the recipients with possible future challenges. To celebrate its Diamond Anniversary Tandridge Photographic Society is holding a free exhibition of printed and digital images on Saturday 20th July 10am – 4pm at Oxted Community Hall. Photography, literally “shaping light” is the art of freezing time that transcends mere images - it captures emotions, stories, and truths. Through the lens, photographers paint with light, composing narratives that can inspire, provoke reflection, or maybe amuse. Tandridge Photographic Society (TPS) has been helping its members create images with impact for 60 years. Formed in 1963 in Caterham as Caterham Community Camera Club, it became Tandridge Photographic Society in 1999. After about 50 years in Caterham, the meetings moved to Over 60 years the technology of photography has developed dramatically from film to digital, from the darkroom process to computer editing. Yet the art of photography has remained constant – to tell a story, generate an emotion, ask a question or capture light and colour in a way that draws the viewer in. Godstone & more recently to Oxted, with c70 members. The aim is to help all members enjoy and improve their photographic skills – whether beginner, enthusiast or expert. The exhibition will showcase the recent work of its members across all genres – wildlife or portrait, landscape or street, abstract or still life there is something for everyone. You can also see some of its members’ images and find out more at www.tandridgeps.org.uk or contacting chair@vtps.org.uk Chris Fenton. Chair.

At the YWI Dormansland this month, we opened our doors to the ladies of Dormansland to join us for a First Aid educational session, led by a volunteer from St Johns Ambulance, and his ever-obliging assistant Resuscitation Annie. Did you know that in addition to dialling 999 in an Emergency, you can also use 112 anywhere in Europe, or that 911 works in the real world as well as in the movies?! The most important things that we learnt: in an emergency situation, call for Emergency help and give them as much information as possible about your location, co-opt a helper where possible, talk to the patient, ask them questions, make them comfortable and keep them calm and don’t be afraid of a defibrillator unit – inside they have pictures that show you what to do, plus once you switch the unit on, it talks to you and guides you through each step as required. Dormansland is fortunate to have several units located around the village At our next meeting on 11th June, we will be having our Annual Ramble. This will start from Dormansland and will end up at a local hostelry where liquid refreshment, and maybe even some chips, will be available. A fair reward for all that walking effort! Meanwhile, the Sole Sisters have been out and about a couple of times ending up at the DBC Community Brunch for awesome ‘build-yourown’ muffins, and The Old House at Home for coffee. Another group also enjoyed a slightly slower paced, but very beautiful, stroll around the Bluebell Walk at Heaven Park, again followed by hot drinks and some gorgeous cakes. Is anyone else spotting a pattern here…? Our full meeting schedule and more information about our subgroups (which are exclusive and free to all members) are available on our website.
