December January

GODSTONE
GARDENERS’ CLUB

Well, what a fabulous evening we
had in November! Andy Thomas
came along and spoke on “Crop
Circles”. He promised at the beginning of his talk that it would
be controversial and that we would still have as many questions
when he had finished as we had before he started - and he was
right! His presentation was seamless - great photography, no
script – he just spoke. I haven’t heard our audience so quiet in a
long time and, guess what,
no one, just no one fell
asleep, not even the Parry
James - sorry Bridget.
There were countless
questions at the end and so
much chatter. It has been
voted our most interesting
talk of the past few years.
Don’t know how we are
going to follow that, but we have no need to worry/wonder as
our next meeting is the A.G.M. - whoopee! This is for Members
only on the 7th December, so remember to bring along your
buffet type nibbles, together with glass and plate. The Club will
provide Festive Drinks. The A.G.M. is at 8pm which hopefully
won’t be too long and then we can socialise. There may be a
quiz…(who knows?) or even Bingo (perhaps not).
Next year is 2023. Can you believe it? The Committee has
decided the Club will not meet in January or February, so
Wednesday, 1st March we all get back together again at the
White Hart Barn.
We will announce our full Programme at the A.G.M. and then
publish it in the February edition of this magazine. So, on behalf
of the Chairman, Jean Jones, and all of us on the Committee,
have a Good Christmas and see you all in 2023.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

EAST SURREY RSPB GROUP

Bohemian waxwings breed across northern
Scandinavia, east across Northern Russia and
normally winter across Eastern Europe and parts of
Asia. Waxwings are known as an irruption species, a
name that is given to a type of intermittent
movement by a large number of individuals of a
species, resulting in their exceptional and unexpected appearance
outside their normal winter range. Generally these irruption
movements in the case of waxwings are caused by poor berry crops,
particularly rowan berries, in their normal after breeding areas. In the
winter of 2015/16 we had good numbers of waxwings arriving in this
country, and in the winter of 2012/13 we had very large numbers of
these beautiful birds arriving.
Early indications this year are that we may have good numbers of
waxwings arriving in this country over the next month or so. October
6th saw large numbers of these birds in southern Finland, being much
larger than normal, and on October 30th reports of the lack of rowan
berries in Sweden and Norway saw large numbers of waxwings in the
southern and eastern coasts of these countries. Here in the first week
of November reports of up to ten waxwings were seen in Northern
England and in Scotland up to forty were reported. Should this trend
continue, and as the winter progresses, these birds may well be forced
south, thus by the New Year waxwings could well be seen in our area.
The group indoor meeting in December is on Wednesday 14th at
the White Hart Barn, Godstone starting at 8pm. This meeting is our

GARDEN JOTTINGS - LOOKING AT BARK

All woody plants have bark on their trunks and stems and it is so
ubiquitous that we often ignore it. However, to a tree it is extremely
important. All trees receive their nutrients from the roots and these are
transported upward just underneath the bark - damage it, and the
consequences are disastrous. The tree will perish if the bark is removed
all around the stem. Grazing animals can do this and kill a tree by
ringing it completely. A tree also uses its bark to protect the inner
wood from boring insects and disease. Pines will exude a sap if the
bark is damaged. This seals the wound and prevents further infestation.
A lot of trees have spectacular bark and this is what makes many so
attractive for the gardener. The shiny mahogany bark of Prunus
serrula glows in winter when the sun is low. Touching this smooth
bark is irresistible and so keeps it nicely polished. Also look out for
Prunus maakii, the ‘Manchurian Cherry’ which has the same shine but
a lighter hue. In contrast, the rough copper coloured flaky bark on Acer

continued over page
43

griseum is best left where it is, as the peeling flakes will catch the
sunlight and glow. It is tempting to peel off flaking bark but do not be
too enthusiastic because if too much is peeled off then it damages the
inner wood and ugly scarring will marr the tree. Betula utilis
‘Jaquemontii’ is a fantastic peeling variety with snowy white bark.
Excellent for winter as it shows up well in the low light. Eucalyptus
have smooth bark which peels in long strips. This is a curious feature of
the tree and accumulates at the base making a pile of very flammable
wood that will burn if started by a lightning strike and burn away all the
competing undergrowth. The tall eucalyptus is often too high to be
damaged by the fire. Look for the Snow Gum E. pauciflora with its
striped, creamy white bark, a twist in its pattern adds to its charm.
Most amazing is the Rainbow Gum E. deglupta which unfortunately is
too tender for the UK. Native to Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New
Guinea, the bark is a range of rainbow hues from purple, maroon, neon
green, blue and many other shades, all arranged in a striped, streaky
fashion.
Japanese Maples are often grown for their colourful leaves but a few
have decorative bark. Pinkish red is found on A. palmatum ‘Sango

Kaku’ (‘Senkaki’) [left] or bright yellow
on A. pal. ‘Bi Hoo’ with more vigorous
varieties such as Acer ×conspicuum
‘Phoenix’ showing up as red and white
stripes, this being one of the Snake Bark
Maples. There are many forms of these
Snake Barks with ‘Viper’ showing very
white streaks, A. pensylvanicum
‘Erythrocladum’ changes colour from
dull yellow to vivid pink in winter.
A quick look at some of the colourful
shrubs gives us the Dogwoods: Cornus
sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ vivid orange and yellow; C. flaviramea
‘Budds Yellow’ bright yellow; C. ‘Sibirica’ bright red; C. kesselringii
deep plum or black. Also Salix vitellina ‘Yelverton Red’ red tipped and
S. irrorrata – white stemmed. All are excellent for winter displays,
although the best colours come from the new growth so cut them to the
ground either every year in the case of willows or every two years for
the Cornus.
Next month: Planting for wet places

EAST SURREY WALKERS
An enjoyable walk in fresh air provides a perfect
antidote to the excesses that many of us will indulge in
during the festive season. ESW offer guided walks on
various days. Please see our web site where you will
find a walk suitable for your ability and maybe help
keep you fit.
Following the article on Sergei Stepniak I was grateful to receive some
information regarding the circumstances in which he and his wife came
to be short term residents in Limpsfield.
May I begin with a puzzle? What is the connection between Stepniak, a
tortoise, a Roman General, Limpsfield and Scotland Yard? The answer
is The Fabian Society. This is a British socialist organisation whose
purpose is to advance the principles of democratic socialism. It was
founded in 1895 at The London School of Economics. One of the
founder members was Edward Pease.
The Society was named in honour of the Roman general Quintus Fabius
Maximus Verrucosus whose military tactic was to win conflict by
wearing down the opposition as opposed to battle confrontation. Hence
his nickname the Cunctator meaning the Delayer. This chimes with the
Fabian Society principle of non-revolutionary change which is
exemplified by their logo, a tortoise.
In spite of his revolutionary history Stepniak joined the Fabian Society.
In 1890 Stepniak founded the Society of Friends of Russian Freedom
and Edward Pease became the Secretary. Pease lived in Limpsfield. It
appears that he was the catalyst for The Stepniaks presence in the
Limpsfield area. An interesting aside is that The Garnett family were
also residents of Limpsfield and members of The Fabians. Stepniak
assisted Constance Garnett in her translation of Russian works into
English. Constance was the first person to translate the works of
Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chekhov into English.
The Scotland Yard connection? Robert Fabian (Bob) was a well-known
and successful Scotland Yard detective. On retirement he wrote a book
entitled “Fabian of the Yard” this led to a TV series of the same name
which dramatised the true stories in Fabian’s book. Sorry for this clue –
I acknowledge that it may only mean something to readers of a certain
age. Bob Fabian retired in 1949!
My thanks to Tony Pearson, ESW member and Limpsfield resident, for

45 continued over page

his valuable contribution to this article. Please note Tony occasionally
leads interesting local history walks, details of which are posted on the
ESW web site.
ESW wish you happy walking and an enjoyable festive season.

RAMBLERS WELLBEING WALKS
EAST SURREY

Leading the Way
We are currently recruiting for volunteers to train
as walk leaders. We are looking for people who
enjoy the outdoors, have some time to spare, and
who are aware of the social and health benefits that walking brings.
Ideally, walk leaders will commit to approximately 4 – 8 hours a
month, depending on the walk. Half a day’s training and ongoing
support is provided.
Our walks which operate in Tandridge and Reigate & Banstead, are
between 30 - 90 minutes, accessible by public transport, and start and
end at points where refreshments are available. This role has a degree
of flexibility and can sometimes be shared with other leaders.
So, if you have a reasonable level of fitness and are looking for
something different to do, please get in touch for a chat and more
information.

Ancient Anglo-Saxons noticed that mistletoe
often grows where birds leave droppings, which
is how mistletoe got its name: In Anglo-Saxon,
“mistel” means “dung” and “tan” means “twig,”

hence, “dung-on-a-twig.”
Fancy a kiss under the dung on a twig?

HELLO GODSTONE & SOUTH GODSTONE!

I am Sami, the new owner
of Blossoms Brunch &
Coffee in Godstone. We
opened our doors on
Saturday, 6th November to
the wonderful public. The
overwhelming support and
lovely comments we have
received have been
incredibly positive.

I am a mother to my 7 year
old boy, Harvey. We have
two dogs, Ragnar and Loki
(Marvel fans!). As a dog
lover, dogs are more than
welcome into Blossoms
Brunch and Coffee. Your
furry friend(s) will find a
‘gravy bone’ treat waiting
for them after a lovely local
walk in and around
beautiful Godstone.

I have worked in Sami and the Blossoms Team
hospitality for a little over a
decade. My introduction to the industry began at aged 18 whilst
backpacking in Australia where I worked as a waitress at hotel in
Darwin.

I grew up living in Bletchingley and have always loved Godstone. I
have fond childhood memories of visiting my Gran who lived in
Godstone. We often visited Bay Pond and attended Christingle at St
Nicholas’ Church.
Stop in and choose from our selection of hearty brunch options,
delicious hot coffee, a slice of cake or a sweet gelato…whatever
tickles your fancy. We source much of our produce locally and from
other small businesses.

We look forward to welcoming you here at Blossoms Brunch and
Coffee.

riotous adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel by John
Nicholson (Hound of the Baskervilles, Peepolykus) was originally
