Surrey Secondary Heads’
Residential Conference

Confident
Creative and
Compassionate
Leadership

23-24th September 2021

DoubleTree by Hilton
St Anne’s Manor, Wokingham

Berkshire RG40 1ST

Welcome to the
Surrey Secondary Heads’
Residential Conference

2021

‘Confident, Creative and

Compassionate Leadership’

On behalf of Secondary Phase Council, we are delighted that you can join
colleagues at this year’s Surrey Secondary Heads’ Residential Conference.

After the turbulence of the past two years, we are excited to see you
here today. If you are a returning Head who has previously attended our
residential conference or are a Head that is new to our Surrey secondary
community, the welcome is equally warm!

Conference time is your time: for you to listen, reflect, engage, challenge
and learn. We know how many colleagues have subsequently drawn on
the informal connections made at our conferences, which have provided
invaluable support across the school year. Now that we are able meet in
person once again, we invite you to make the very most of this significant
and valuable opportunity to collaborate with like-minded colleagues, and
to take time away from the intensity of the school day.

We also look forward to welcoming our speakers, all of whom have a
clear brief to engage with us, to inspire new thinking, and to facilitate
meaningful discussion. Please therefore take the opportunity to fully
engage with our speakers during the formal and informal sessions that we
have scheduled across the programme.

If you have any questions whilst at conference, please do not hesitate to
ask Cassia or Sarah who will be able to assist you.

ways to support children, families and communities, keeping pupils learning,
and innovating at a pace we’ve never previously seen.  We can take pride in
the work of our teams and the di erence it has made.  But we’ve only just
begun.  As much as we’ve mitigated the e ects of the pandemic, the real
work starts now as we look to repay the national service young people have
o ered in giving up a significant part of their youth or childhood.  So what
do we need to do and who do we need to be in this most important of years?

Agenda

14:30 Setting Goals For a Brighter Future St Anne’s Suite
Nicky Forster, Goal Setting Coach
Synopsis: Having a clear vision is essential for any individual, a clear mission,
supported by strategic aims and objectives, will give us a better chance
of long-term growth and success. Some people are born with a natural
inclination to set goals and work intentionally toward them. Others derive
life- changing value from having someone as a role model or mentor, teaching
and helping them on how to develop and work toward their own life vision.
When students have vision, they make decisions in the context of how their
choices will a ect their future desires. Without vision, every decision is a coin
toss where thoughts about the potential consequences or ramifications aren’t
present, and obviously cannot be weighed.
With so many societal influences now facing adolescents and teenagers every
day, vision gives them a filter. If they can visualise a happy and successful
future for themselves, and they understand what it takes to get there, it helps
them to improve decision making in the midst of daily peer pressure. Success
is not by mere chance, it’s the result of a clear vision and a plan.

14:45 Refreshments St Anne’s
Foyer

15:10 Confidently Towards The Future St Anne’s Suite
Allister Frost, Digital Optimist

Synopsis: Accelerating technological progress ensures that fresh challenges
hurtle towards us faster today than ever before. So perhaps we can be
forgiven for sometimes feeling a little ba ed, bewildered, and behind the
curve. But if there is one thing we’ve learned from our recent ‘coronacoaster’
ride, it’s that introducing bold changes is rarely as di cult as we once
imagined, and the results can sometimes be truly life-enhancing. Join Allister
Frost for a conversation about technology, disruption, and developing
future-proof leadership skills that make positive change a way of life.
