2 A FEW WORDS FROM THE CHAIMAN 2024 As snow drifts down from the cold and grey January sky it is a perfect moment to stay snug and reflect on another busy and successful year for your Society. Following our AGM in March, May saw us take our annual ‘trip out of the village’ to a rain sodden Goddards Green Garden which we thoroughly enjoyed though we were all glad to get inside the 500 year old Clothiers Hall for delicious tea & cake. -It was though, a dry May day for the open garden event at Pogles Place which saw 200 visitors enjoy more tea & cake whilst being serenaded by the Green Street Blues. The event including match funding from The Cazenove Association raised £3500 for Hospice in the Weald and in response to this donation, it was pointed out that KHS had raised over £18,000 for Hospice over the past few years….we are immensely proud of this achievement. The summer and autumn shows were both well attended with new entrants among the prize winners whilst in October we were delighted to support the flower festival with our own display, ‘All is Safely Gathered In’. November we held our annual and raucous Quiz night in the village centre which amongst much hilarity raised £400 for Children in Need. A sad fact about Horticultural Societies in Kent is that many have closed over the past few years due to dwindling membership. Your Committee is very alert to this trend and in addition to promoting all we do we are also beginning a liaison with Halstead Horticultural Society to offer mutual support and shared events….more on this as matters develop. And so to this year where our first event will be the AGM at 7.30 on Friday March 1st which as always will be supplemented by Cheese & Wine and a talk by Hazel from Castle (Lavender) Farm….do please join us. At the AGM I will be stepping down as Chairman having relished the task for the past 11 years. It will be for the membership to select my successor on the evening but in advance may I wish them every success. I would also wish to thank my Committee and all the members of the Society for your unstinting support during my tenure. Clwyd Roberts

5 SHOW REGULATIONS 1. Up to three awards may be made in each class. 2. No more than one prize may be awarded to an exhibitor in any one class but exhibitors may submit a maximum of three entries in any class. Should an exhibitor, having received one prize in a class, merit, with a further entry, an award, the Judges may recognise this by awarding a “Highly Commended”. 3. The Judges may, at their discretion, withhold any prize, in any class or “Best In Section” if, in their judgement, the standard of the exhibits is inadequate. Highly Commended awards or awards of merit or recognition may be made by the Judges when an exhibit justifies this. 4. Any complaints regarding the exhibits shall be made in writing, be specific and handed with a £5 deposit to the Society Secretary before 3.00pm on the day of the Show. The deposit shall be returned if the protest is upheld by a Committee appointed for this purpose. 5. It is a rule of the Society that exhibitors must be members of the Society. New membership may be accepted on the day of the Show. The only exceptions to this will be Floral Arrangement classes, where members from associated clubs and societies are welcome to exhibit, and for children of Knockholt Village for the children’s classes. Trophies however cannot be awarded outside the Society. 6. All exhibits must be left in position until after prize giving. JUDGES The Committee would like to thank the Judges who generously give their time and contribute to making the Shows a success. AWARDS All cups and trophies remain the property of the Society and are held for one year only. Points will be awarded on a 3, 2, 1 basis for each class over the year.
