LGBTEACH National
Day of
Silence
Day of Silence, a student-led
demonstration where
LGBTQ+ students
and allies take a vow of
silence to protest the
harmful effects of
harassment
and discrimination.
History
Started in the mid-'90s by a
University of Virginia student,
Maria Pulzetti. She felt that
LGBTQ+ youth were
consistently silenced and
erased by parents and
administrators. So, Maria
created the Day of Silence as
a one-time event. She
believed by surrounding folks
with silence they couldn't help
but notice.
Maria's one Day of Silence went
national, and students at all levels
participate on this day. Every
April, stories of persecution are
followed by a series of quiet
echoes. In the end, we will break
the silence with a rally. We will
reclaim our silence and erasure
against hatred from campus,
legislation, social media, etc.
We will find our voices!
