Introduction

I n the early years, either in nursery or preschool, children begin to learn
phonics (the method of learning to read). Once children begin learning
sounds, these sounds are used orally to identify and make words. They will
then start to understand the letters that make each sound used to read and
spell words. Children need to learn letter-sound relationships because
English uses letters in the alphabet to represent sounds. Phonics teaches this
information to help children learn how to read. Children learn the sounds
each letter makes and how a change in the order of letters changes a word's
meaning. 

For this reason, the rst initial sounds taught are 's,' 'a,' 't,' and ‘p'. These
can be blended immediately for reading to make simple CVC words
(consonant, vowel, consonant), e.g., sat, pat, tap. Children then develop
segmenting for writing skills, breaking the word into sounds to spell it out.
Year 1 pupils are eager to learn and explore the world. This module is
designed to develop the following skills:

• Identifying the beginning and ending consonants.
• Identifying consonant blends and vowel sounds.
• Recognizing sight words—and more. 

In  English Phonics Module for Year 1, students practice tracing and
writing letters and pronouncing letter names and sounds. Many activities
connect physical hand and arm movement with hearing and saying sounds
and words.

The activities in this module are intended to supplement other
reading or language-learning instruction. Decoding words is just one of
several skills that go into becoming a skilled reader. Additional work in
vocabulary, reading uency, and reading comprehension is necessary.
Thank you for using the  English Phonics Module for Year 1. I have been
delighted by the results while testing these activities with my students in my
