CHINESE NEW
YEAR

Chinese New Year is the
Chinese festival that
celebrates the beginning of
a new year on the
traditional Chinese
calendar. Chinese New Year
is associated with several
myths and customs. The
festival was traditionally a
time to honour deities as
well as ancestors.

light. Celebrated by millions of
Hindus, Sikhs and Jains
across the world. The word

Sanskrit word deepavali,
meaning “rows of lighted
lamps”. House, shops and
public places are decorated
with small oil lamps called
Diyas.

CHRISTMAS

Christmas is celebrated to
remember the birth of
Jesus Christ who Christians
believe is the Son of God.
The name ‘Christmas’
comes from the Mass of
Christ (or Jesus). A Mass
service (which is sometimes
called Communion or
Eucharist) is where
Christians remember that
Jesus died for us and then
came back to life.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat
Festival (Duanwu
Duanwu Festival,
Duanwu Jie, Double
Fifth, Tuen Ng Jit) is a
traditional holiday that
commemorates the life

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CELEBRATION?

CHRISTMAS

MAIN ACTIVITIES

1. Opening present
with family.

2. Leaving cookies
and milk for Santa.

3. Writing
Christmas wish list.

4. Build a
snowman.

CHRISTMAS COSTUME

The colour red is
used at Christmas to
represent the blood of
Jesus when he died on
the cross. It’s also
reflected in the color of
holly berries, which also
had pagan symbolism
during the winter
solstice celebrations in
ancient Rome. The
colour green signifies
everlasting light and life.

TRADITIONAL FOOD

A tray of hot chocolate is paired
with Christmas-themed ginger
bread cookies.

Turkey with stuffing, mashed
potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and
vegetables such as carrots , turnip,
parsnips, etc.

Mince pies are tiny pies that are filled with fruits such as
raisins, cranberries, and sultanas, as well as chopped
nuts and spices such as cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg.
Once they are baked, they are dusted with a little icing
sugar and ready to eat – perfect with a cup of tea or a
glass of wine and a nice finish to a delicious Christmas
dinner!

TRADITIONAL FOOD

Use of spices, a combination of
dried or candied fruit, and some
liquor or wine. Fruitcake is filled
with all three and is moist and
chewy.

These are small sausages that
are wrapped in bacon and often
surround the turkey when it is
served. In Scotland, these are
called kilted sausages.

PRESENTS

Christmas Presents. One of the main reasons we have the
custom of giving and receiving presents at Christmas is to
remind us of the presents given to Jesus by the Wise Men:
Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. Gold is associated with Kings
and Christians believe that Jesus is King of Kings.

What did I learn from this PBL?

Firstly, I have learned how to use PowerPoint.
Secondly, I have discovered so many different
traditional celebrations, beautiful and unique
costumes with many different traditional
foods. Finally and more importantly, I have
learned to enjoy and respect others’ cultures
and traditions.
