2 What is the Past Simple Tense ? • The past simple helps us talk about actions that happened in the past and completed actions that took place at a specific time in the past. Examples: • I went to the store yesterday. • She did her homework last night. • We had dinner at a restaurant last week. • He was at the park yesterday.
3 What is Comparative and Superlative adjective? Comparative describes a noun by comparing it to another noun. Superlative describes a noun by comparing it to two or more nouns to the highest or lowest degree. Example of sentences Grasshoppers are small insects. Flies are smaller than grasshopper. Ants are the smallest insect.

5 3. The past continuous tense is often used with the past simple: • To talk about a habitual action that was happening when another action took place. Example: Zaidi was often fishing with his uncle when he came back for a holiday. Here, the past continuous ‘was fishing’ suggest that the habitual action fishing was taking place at a time in the past. The past simple ‘came’ shows an action that took place at a specific time. • To describe an action that was happening when another action took place. Example: Joe was sawing the branches when two birds flew past. Here, the past continuous ‘was sawing’ describes an action that was happening. The past simple ‘flew’ shows another action that took place at the moment. • To talk about an action that was happening in the past when another action interrupted it. Example : I was trimming the tree when a snake slithered by. Here, the past continuous ‘was trimming’ is used to show an action that was in progress. The past simple ‘slithered’ is used to show another action that interrupted it. 4. The past continuous can be used with the past simple in a question: Example: a) Did you lie when the police was interrogating you? b) Were you hiding when your parents came back? 5. Comparisons between the use of Past Continuous Tense and Past Simple Tense: PAST CONTINUOUS PAST SIMPLE • To talk about actions that were in progress around a certain time in the past. • Example: At that time, I was teaching. • To talk about actions at specific times in the past. • Example: I washed the dishes. • To show an action in progress but the action is not emphasised. • Example: 1. Dad was relaxing by himself. 2. I was strolling in the park. • To emphasise the main event/ action. • Example: 1. A police inspector turned up. 2. My old friend showed up suddenly. 7. When we use that past continuous with the past simple, we often use time expressions like while, as, when, before, after, that day/week/ month/year, last night/week/month/year, etc. Example: a) The flood victims were waiting for help. A truck showed up. While the flood victims were waiting for help, a truck showed up. b) It was getting bright. We decided to resume our journey. As it was getting bright, we decided to resume our journey. c) We salvaged whatever possible. We waited patiently for help. We salvaged whatever possible while we were patiently waiting for help.

10 What is an insect? • Insects are creatures that have bodies with three segments that are protected by a hard shell. They have three pairs of legs and a pair of antennae. Most insects have two pairs of wings, too. There are lots and lots of kinds of Insects and they can all be very different from each other.
