Pritilata Waddadar
91
Against the backdrop of the Civil Disobedience
Movement, mobilization of women for direct
revolutionary activities was witnessed in Bengal for
the first time. It started with the inclusion of Pritilata
Waddedar (1911-1932) in the Surya Sen (Master
Da)-led revolutionary organization. She played an
iconic role in the revolutionary movement and
encouraged others to emulate her bravery. Pritilata
Waddadar, a real embodiment of flaring devotion
and dedication was born in a culturally advanced Figure : A potrait by Dr. Akash S
middle-class family at Darlaghat Village of Chittagong district in undivided Bengal.
Her parents Sri Jagabandhu Waddadar and Smt. Pratibha Waddadar - arranged for
the best possible education for their daughter and put her into Dr. Khastagir's school,
a renowned school for children, directly in class III, where she was awarded
scholarship that proved her brilliance. She passed the Matriculation Examination in
1928 and was admitted to the Eden College in Dhaka. After that, she came to
Calcutta for her graduation in English and was admitted to the famous Bethune.
College and came out with flying colours in the B.A. examination. After this, she was
appointed directly as the Headmistress ofAparna Charan Girls' School in Chittagong
(Chattogram). In class VIII, she witnessed Master Da Surya Sen being arrested by
the British police on the charge of looting money that was of the Railways. Her
patriotic spirit lashed out against this oppression. She began to collect books on
revolutionary philosophy and biographies of great revolutionary leaders. When she
was in Dhaka for her studies she associated herself with a secret revolutionary
women's organization, the Dipali Sangha. The organization would collect money for
revolutionary groups and secretly circulate and read material that the British termed
seditious.
92
She was asked by her revolutionary group to collect bomb casings from a secret
factory in Calcutta and to send these to Chittagong. She was helped by Kalpana
Dutta, Sarojini Pal, Kumudini Rakshit, Renuka Ray and Kamala Mukherjee in
securing many such cases. These were used in the memorable events of our
revolutionary-nationalist history, like the Chittagong Armoury raid, the bombing
of the telephone and telegraph office, the take-over of the Reserve Police Line and
the Jalalabad battle.
Although initially there was reluctance in accepting her membership in Master
Da's revolutionary group, Pritilata's bravery and sincerity appealed to the great
revolutionary so that Master Da himself relaxed the conditions for her entry into
the group. In 1929, with his permission, she organized a women's conference in
the district in which women working in different secret societies of Bengal
participated. After the success of this conference she was given more
responsibility in revolutionary activities by Master Da. She started meeting
imprisoned revolutionaries pretending to be their kin and collected critical
information for Master Da.
Her final act of valour and sacrifice came with the attack on the European Club in
Paharthali. She led a team of fifteen revolutionaries dressed as Punjabi men and
torched the club that had a signboard saying - “Dogs and Indians not allowed”. She
was injured in the ensuing police firing but in order to avoid arrest, she consumed
cyanide and died on the spot. She was all but 21 years old.
There are halls, colleges and schools that have been established to remember her
contributions. Happily for the younger generation, there are numerous films on the
freedom struggle that have her character. The spot where she died has a bust to
commemorate this courageous woman and her act of supreme sacrifice that
inspired many women and men alike in the years to Independence.
