Personification
A figure of speech in which an animal, object, or idea is given
human characteristics.
This shows personification because apples do not have faces which is a human
quality
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words.
This is an alliteration because the sounds at the beginning of the
words sound the same
Rhyme
The repetition of the same or similar sounds, usually in stressed
syllables at the ends of lines.
This is a rhyming poem because there is a repetition of similar
sounds
Rhythm
Musical quality created by a pattern of beats or stresses in a line of
poetry.
This is a rhythm poem because the lines all have the same number
of beats
Onomatopoeia
The use of words or phrases whose sounds suggest their meanings.
The sound of the word boom, for example, suggests an explosion.
This word would mean that it would be an onomatopoeia, for
example it could suggest that someone hit their head
End Rhyme
Rhyme that occurs at the end of lines
This is an end rhyme poem because the words at the end of each
sentence rhyme
Internal Rhyme
Rhyme that occurs within a single line of poetry.
This is an internal rhyme because there is only one sentence and it
rhymes
Stanzas
A group of lines in a poem set off by blank lines.
There's a blank line in between each stanza so that’s how your able
to identify it
Symbol
A person, place, an object, or an action that stands for something
beyond itself.
This is a symbol because it represents the sun and the moon.
Simile
A comparison using like or as
This is a simile because it's comparing jewels to things like blood,
heaven, and grass etc.
Metaphor
Direct comparison between two unlike things. It does not use the
words like or as.
This is comparing a black cat to the night without using like or as
Hyperbole
Figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or
humorous effect.
This is a hyperbole because the boy talks about how he feels like
he's been in timeout forever but it's really only been 5 minutes not
10,000 years
Free Verse
Poetry written without a regular rhyme scheme, meter, or form.
There's no rhyming, scheme, meter, or form so it's a free verse
poem
Imagery
Language that appeals to the five senses---touch, taste, smell,
hearing, and sight.
This would be imagery because its using touch which is one of the 5
senses
Lyric Poem
Short poem that directly expresses the poet’s thoughts and
emotions in a musical way.
This poem shows that its a lyric poem because the writer doesn’t
like being told how she should feel and expresses how she feels
about it
Narrative Poem
Poem that tells a story.
This poem is a little story about how a pebble lasted a long car ride
so that makes it a narrative poem
Rhyme scheme
The sequence in which the rhyme occurs. The first end sound is
represented as the letter a, the second b, etc.
This is a rhyme scheme poem because the same pattern is repeating
over and over
Poetry
A form of writing that uses not only words, but also form, patterns
of sound, imagery, and figurative language to convey its message.
The poem is written to create in image of a person
Sound devices
Techniques used to create a sense of rhythm or to emphasize
particular sounds in writing.
This is part of a sound device poem because the same sounds keep
recurring
Meter
Regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that gives a
line of poetry a predictable rhythm.
This meter poem is easy to identify because the rhyme is
predictable
Figurative language
The use of words to create an image in the reader's mind.
This poem is using a simile which is a type of figurative language
that compares things using like or as. In this poem it's comparing a
tornado to a wrecking ball
Mood
The feeling or atmosphere created by the writer.
In this poem the girl is sad because her friend leaves her. Which is
describing the atmosphere so that makes it a mood poem
Idiom
A phrase or expression whose meaning is different from what the
words say literally.
In this poem its describing an idiom because you can’t talk your
head off nor can you walk your feet off
Symbolism
A literary device where a physical object represents something else.
The poem is using representations about life to describe Spring
Repetition
A technique in which the same word or line is repeated for
emphasis or unity. Helps to reinforce meaning and create an
appealing rhythm.
In this poem the repetition is where it keeps saying “I’m car sick”
over and over
Refrain
Stanza or line that is repeated throughout the poem.
The refrain in this poem is where it keeps saying “Of the beautiful
Annabel Lee” because the line is repeated throughout the poem
Couplet
Rhymed pair of lines in a poem
All of these examples are couplets because they all rhyme
and there all 2 lined
