Who are... John & Lisa Santos (Duo Santos) John and Lisa Santos — a well-matched pair Duo Santos’ 25th anniversary celebrates the couple John and Lisa Santos, a husband and wife harmoniously linked in art as in life. João Manuel Gomes dos Santos, recording artist with 16 CDs to his credit, founder-manager and musical director of the Amateur Singing Contest, was born in Lisbon and emigrated to Canada with his family at the age of ten. Showing an aptitude and a taste for music, he began playing accordion and guitar at the age of fourteen. During this time, he began his artistic career, doing shows with the Portuguese Association of Manitoba and the local CTV station’s Talent Show. With his parents’ help, he recorded his first work on CD in 1975 and from then until 1977 recorded six CDs. He recorded the first in 1977 in Portugal with Quim Barreiros and the Conjunto Típico de Jorge Fontes. At various points in his career, he performed as accompanist to Frank Sinatra Jr., Tommy James and The Shondells, George Savalas and Nestor Pistor, among others. In 1979, John Santos took up residence in Vancouver and from there went on various gigs throughout Canada and the United States. F r o m 1980 to 1984, he established himself in the Canadian community around Vancouver, both as a solo act as well as in conjunction with Burton Cummings and Ella FitzGerald. In 1985, he met Lisa Arthurs... Lisa Arthurs was born in Duncan, B.C., on lovely Vancouver Island, May 1, 1965, the first-generation Canadian daughter of English parents. From a very early age, she felt the attraction of music and singing. At the age of 16, she entered the Royal Conservatory of Music in Victoria, where she studied singing and, in her school band, learned to play the flute. At 18, with reservations, naturally, on the part of her parents, she left university to dedicate herself to music. Who are... John & Lisa Santos (Duo Santos) of music, she met, then fell in love with, John Santos and in 1985, they joined forces to become the Duo Santos, concentrating on working on the cruise ships of the Princess Cruises line, on the wellknown “Love Boat”. They married on August 20, 1988. In the 90s, they set off on world tours that took them to 302 cities scattered over 42 countries on 4 continents. In Portugal, Lisa was very taken by popular Portuguese songs, singing them in her own style. John harnessed Lisa’s aptitude for and skill in learning the words and sounds of Portugal, teaching her to sing Portuguese songs with him. Thus was born a woman of “Shakespearean” origins giving voice to the language of Camões. Though she still didn’t speak Portuguese, she could sing Portuguese melodies to perfection. Together, they recorded 12 CDs and 3 videos, published in Portugal, Venezuela, United States, Brazil and Canada and marketed throughout the world. The tracks “Ai que bom” and “Ninguém nos detém” made the charts in Portugal and “Desgarrada do Amor”, in Australia and Hawaii. With Lisa’s natural flair for learning Portuguese songs without knowing the language, Duo Santos toured Portuguese communities spread throughout the world and with great success. In Montreal, John and Lisa became friends with portuguese guitarist Artur Gaipo and had the privilege of meeting and working with Amália Rodrigues. Lisa Santos was captivated by Amália, her voice and her fados. She became enthusiastic about Amália’s fado songs, learned them, sang them, initially not understanding their language but responding to their feeling of nostalgia. At the request of a friend, Dinis Paiva and at John’s insistence, she recorded an album of traditional fados —”Também canto o fado”— with its outstanding homage to the Diva, Variety Club Telethon with Burton Cummings John and Lisa in Hawaii José Mário Coelho, John, Lisa and Filipe Neves Duo Santos in Australia On RTP with Marco Paulo Artur Gaipo, Lisa and John www.TheSingingContest.com The Singing Contest 2023 103

“Amália, Mulher e Povo”. From that time on, the fado became part of the Duo Santos’ repertoire, featuring the unmistakable voice of Lisa. The videos of the fados sung by Lisa may be heard at www.duosantos.com, along with other Duo Santos favorites. More recently, John and Lisa spent three years working for Disney, coming away with a Gold Medal for their artistic achievements. Later on, Disney’s agent offered John the position of Musical Director but, given that John and Lisa now had two children, the offer was deferred. Each of the Duo Santos’ recordings is an original, written expressly for them by José Cid, Tó Maria Vinhas, Mike Sergeant, Tozé Brito, José Mário Coelho, Filipe Neves, Fernando Correia Marques, Valdemar Mejdoubi, Hernâni Raposo, Raúl Lucas, José Pereira, Zé da Vesga, João Paulo, Remo, and the singers themselves, John and Lisa. After the birth of James Manuel Santos, their first child, in December 2005, John took part in a short, North American tour with the Trio Odmira. In July 2007, the nuclear family was increased to four by the welcome arrival of a daughter, Kyla. Looking after a family and organising the Amateur Singing Contest have kept John and Lisa very busy but, when they can, they want to act on pending invitations to perform in Portugal, Hawaii and Australia and to record over the next two years. In August 2010, they will tour California. This year, 2010, to mark the occasion of their 25th artistic anniversary, Duo Santos is releasing a double CD with 40 successes, including three new originals: “25 anos”, “Foi a música” and “Papel de Quatro Cores”, in collaboration with Fernando Correia Marques. One of John and Lisa’s most striking attractions is the variety of instruments that they play and their ability to sing in Portuguese, English, Greek, Italian, Croatian, French, Spanish and Hawaiian. John and Lisa: well-matched in art as in life! Very best wishes! José Mário Coelho Toronto, April 24, 2010 Who are... The Coaching We provide contestants with the expertise of a professional vocal coach who has been a part of the contest since Day 1, Lisa Santos. The contestants have the opportunity to benefit from the different perspectives and coaching styles Lisa has been witness to over the years. Influenced by theory from the Royal Conservatory to Vocology to personal experience gained from almost 40 years as a professional vocalist, Lisa helps contestants tweak their performances for the audiences and judging panels, whose expectations she has become intimately familiar with. John also gives his own valuable input, giving contestants a more complete picture of what is needed to polish their vocal and stage performances in order to really shine onstage. The hope is to provide each contestant with tools and techniques which they will still be using well beyond their time with the contest. Throughout the pandemic, we had to be very conscientious about scheduling enough time between contestants in order to assure that physical distancing could be maintained. We used to go over time consistently before and that meant more bodies within the same waiting area. By capping the numbers of contestants to a maximum of 16 per month, we didn’t go over time very often and we were actually able to spend more time with each contestant than we had ever done previously. We found our scheduling sweet spot and we plan to stick with it as much as possible. The experience of having no live audience at all during the lockdowns provided us with the challenge of helping the contestants learn to connect with an audience they couldn’t see or hear. We needed them to find inspiration in an often uninspiring studio environment. In other words, they needed to find it within themselves. Of course, the ability to tune into a song emotionally is precisely what makes an excellent singer anyway. Ultimately, having no live audience in front of them helped contestants learn to dig deeper for their performances and… it also enhanced our coaching techniques. We encourage contestants to include the audience on the other side of the cameras by simply thinking of the camera lens as a portal to the audience at home. Still, there is no a doubt, a live audience just makes everything easier. It generates a special energy which can even help to alleviate stage fright… if you let it! The energy you give out to a good live audience comes back at least two-fold. However, performers always need to know how to access the magic within themselves first and foremost. After all, not all audiences are as great as the ones we usually get! Lisa in a session with Oriana. The see-through barrier is a holdover from the COVID protocol, as is the air purifier in front of the stage. It looks like they’ll staying put for a while longer. Lisa met with all of the Finalists to review video of their performances. Here she is with Catherine. www.TheSingingContest.com The Singing Contest 2023 109

Since September 2012, we have had the pleasure of holding each and every one of the qualifying rounds at Casa do Alentejo Community Centre, even throughout the pandemic. This season, we were thrilled to be able to have our contestants performing downstairs in the main hall, on the fantastic stage, with a live audience for every round. We are grateful to Casa do Alentejo for all the support they gave us during the pandemic and with their co-operation, we were able to set up a fabulous broadcast facility to showcase our contestants and their talent to a wider online audience. After more than 10 years… there’s no place like home! So, what is Casa do Alentejo exactly? It is an organization dedicated to the Portuguese community in Toronto. Through various cultural and social activities, they help Portuguese immigrants and their Canadian families maintain links to their cultural heritage. They recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. Parabens! Alentejo is a province in Portugal famous for, among other things, it’s wine, it’s cork industry (goes well with wine!) and it’s music. To keep their traditions alive, Casa do Alentejo has its own choir, a folk dance group and has continually strived to bring some of the best and brightest artists from Portugal, both nostalgic attractions and rising stars. The centre also provides space for a Portuguese school. The school, Novos Horizontes (New Horizons), is used mainly on Saturdays to teach young students the language of their forefathers. They are located on the 3rd floor, right next door to SCJS Studios. The main hall is an excellent performance venue and it has the added convenience of being able to get a meal and a drink in the restaurant and lounge before the show. Here’s to another 10 years! They would be spending a lot of time together during the Grand Finale so, above all else, it was to be a day for them to get to know each other a bit better. They were picked up by cars from West Toronto Kia and taken to New Casa Abril Restaurant for a late lunch. Many thanks to owner Jesué Eusebio for a fabulous meal with wonderfully attentive service. The Finalists In The Studio The next day, Sunday, March 19, they were each scheduled to record the songs they would be performing at the Final in SCJS Studios. Although many of them have already had experience in the studio, including some with producer Anthony Wright, for most of them, it was their first time recording vocals. After the audio recordings, they took their place in front of Eddie V. H.’s camera to record some video for the Final. Season 17 - The 2023 Finalists Compilation Album is recorded at SCJS Studios. Although most of the contestants just think of it as the rehearsal room for the contest, it is also a professional recording studio. Each Finalist recorded their 2 songs but only one of them would be going on the compilation album. Both recordings are needed in order to create a recap of the performances which is presented at the end of the Grand Finale showcase, just before voting begins. John presented producer Anthony Wright with the 20 tracks he would use for the recordings. Anthony recorded the vocals and then mixed and mastered the final products. On the following pages, under each photo of the Finalists “at the mic”, we have listed the songs they recorded and the name of the artists who originally recorded the versions they sang. Yorkville Sound’s Paraline Series PSA1 active full range loudspeaker system delivers the clarity, scalability and precision of a complex line array system in a compact, user friendly format. Integrated DSP and efficient controls allow ‘plug and play’ simplicity in a scalable vertical array – no additional external signal processing or on site programming required. The heart of the PSA1 design is the high frequency Para-Line lens. This innovative technology transforms a point source into a uni-phase plane wave, allowing multiple high frequency drivers to sum coherently in the vertical plane without self-interference. Ideal for mobile PA applications where complex trussing or roof rigging isn’t practical, Yorkville PSA1 cabinets mount quickly and securely on a typical high quality speaker stand. Up to two cabinets per stand can be arrayed when required. When rigging is available, innovative optional external bolt-on flyware allows up to four PSA1 cabinets to be configured easily in a 60°(v) x 110° (h) array for touring system or permanent install. Rugged injection molded ABS cabinet design, Class-D amplification, and Neodymium woofers minimize overall cabinet weight, ensures system transport and set-up can easily be handled by a single operator. Highly efficient amplifier design means each PSA1 draws less than 3 amps in typical operation allowing up to four cabinets to operate safely on a standard 15 amp service. www.yorkville.com Distributed in North America by Yorkville Sound MADE IN CANADA Versatile, Compact, Scalable Array for the Masses 120 The Singing Contest 2023 www.TheSingingContest.com

The Season 16 Grand Finale The Season 16 Grand Finale was hotly anticipated by one and all. Not only would we finally find out who was going to be writing and recording an 8 song album with Anthony Wright… No, it was much more than that… We couldn’t wait for our Finalists to be able to showcase their talents to a LIVE audience again! This would be the first Finale with a live audience since 2019! We chose to stay at Casa do Alentejo for the Finale, even though it is a much smaller venue than we would normally use for the final round of the season, because we weren’t sure that the pandemic was truly winding down. We chose to stay at Casa do Alentejo for THIS season’s finale because it all went down so well! The beautiful main hall at Casa do Alentejo was filled to capacity as people prepared for a full evening of food and entertainment. During the meal, representatives from multiple levels of government were on hand to offer words of encouragement to the Finalists and congratulatory messages to the event organizers. Former Deputy Mayor for Toronto South, Ana Bailão, was not physically there but she did send a video message which was played for the audience. (Left) Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore and (below, left) Peter Fonseca, MP for Mississauga East-Cooksville both took to the stage to address the crowd. (Below, right) After a wonderful meal, the kitchen staff kicked back and the audience settled in to watch the show. May 28/22 www.TheSingingContest.com The Singing Contest 2023 131

Meanwhile, votes were being tabulated and prizes were prepared. The audience was then treated to performances from the Season 15 first place winners. First, Juvenile winner AJ Manuel sang 2 songs from the album he won. Then it was time for the Season 15 Adult winner, Cassie Acevedo, to sing a couple of songs from her album. Both albums were co-written with and produced by Anthony Wright The Season 16 Grand Finale www.TheSingingContest.com The Singing Contest 2023 139

Showtime Every show requires sound, lighting and a multi-camera video set-up. Plus, a great team of people to run everything. This season, the head of our video crew is Matt Mortfield. The audience generally doesn’t see Matt since he is upstairs in SCJS Studios, which on event nights, transforms into a broadcast studio. From there, Matt directs the cameras and switches the visuals for the live stream. More than a kilometre of cables have been wound through ceilings, down walls and back up again, allowing signals from all of the cameras, monitors and sound equipment to be sent or received as necessary. All of our events are live-streamed to our Youtube channel - TheSingingContest1 . A second signal is sent out to GOliveTV who streams to their platforms, including their own ROKU channel. Diego Del Rio is by Matt’s side in the studio, helping him follow the script and setting up the next video to be played. Matt and Diego also take turns, so that each of them are equally experienced with the equipment set-up and one can cover the other if need be. Diego is shown here manning a camera at another event. We made quite a few changes to the equipment this season and were happy to have Paulo Marques offer his professional advice regarding the best equipment options. Paulo was also on hand to man the wireless camera, which captures some great shots from backstage and beyond. Paulo is a musician in the group Karma Banda and when he wasn’t able to make some of the shows due to gigs, Lorene Santiso stepped into is shoes. She is a great addition to the crew.
