(1st - 5th grades): Lucy Calkins Units of Study Institute 1.0 - Writing

Come participate in this 2-day session, where participants will learn how to appropriately implement the Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study for the 2019-20 school year. We will dedicate time and resources to help participants understand how to plan 6-8 week units using daily mini-lessons, in order to effectively teach writing in a workshop setting.
Note: This training is geared towards teachers who have not previously been trained in using the Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study/Up the Ladder. If you have received previous training, you are not eligible for this PD. Completion of this training, requires 2 full days of participation.
Follow-up PD sessions will take place during the 2018-19 school year to further support the implementation of this resource.

(9th - 12th): ELA Institute 9th - 12th Teachers

In this 2-day PD session for high school ELA teachers, we will provide thorough training so that participants will be able to use our PUSD Curriculum Scope & Sequence and Unit Overviews to appropriately plan reading and writing instruction for the 2019-20 school year. Using the Understanding by Design framework as our guide, we will collaboratively generate teaching points so that participants can effectively plan their reading and writing instruction in a workshop setting.
Note: Please bring resources you feel would be helpful in planning for the 2019-20 school year.
Completion of this training requires 2 full days of participation. Follow-up PD sessions will take place during the 2018-19 school year to further support the teaching of reading and writing in a workshop setting.


Carnegie Learning (9th - 12th) 9th - 12th Teachers

We will dedicate time and resources to help participants understand how to plan 6-8 week units using daily mini-lessons, in order to effectively teach phonics in a workshop setting.
Note: This training is for 2019-20 Kindergarten teachers ONLY. Completion of this training, requires 2 full days of participation.

Reading Like a Historian

We invite all secondary ELA, History/Social Science, Theatre, and Dance teachers to join us in this day of exploratory learning! We will engage with ways to inspire and support student storytelling as a way to express understanding of content, culture, and the world around us. Integrated techniques in theatre and dance support the development of these storytelling skills and inspire compassionate thinking and empathy in the classroom. The goal is the development of artistic citizens who engage with each other's stories in order to build tolerance and human relations.
Kevin Kane received his Ph.D. degree in Cultural Studies from Claremont Graduate University with an emphasis in Arts Education and Culture & Performance. His doctoral dissertation is entitled “Transforming Teens: Access and Diversity, Identity Exploration, Collaboration, and Community-Building in a Progressive Performing Arts Program for Youth” and functions as a comprehensive investigation of youth transformation through the arts. Kevin is a lecturer in the UCLA department of World Arts and Cultures.
