The Stockdale Mill, a 158-year-old water-powered flour mill and dam located just within the county’s western border, is a tribute to not only craftsmanship, but the recognition
of locals to preserve a special part of the area’s history. Stockdale, located on the Eel River precisely on the border of Wabash and Miami counties, is an unincorporated
community located just west of Roann, sharing land in both counties. According to the book “Wabash County History Bicentennial Edition 1976,” Stockdale was platted in
October 1839 by Thomas Goudy, a few years after Col. John Anderson from Ohio traveled up the Eel River with his family from Logansport. During the Civil War, the mill supplied
flour and meal to the Union Army.

Mary Hettmansperger is a fiber and jewelry artist who has been exhibiting and teaching
across the U.S. and abroad for 35 years. SOFA, the Bead & Button Show, national and
regional fiber conferences, basketry, jewelry, and beading conferences, art and craft schools,
private guilds, galleries, and art shows are some of the venues to which she lends her
instruction and artwork. Mary authored and illustrated 4 books: Fabulous Woven Jewelry,
Wrap, Stitch, Fold and Rivet, Mixed Metal Jewelry workshop, and Heat, Color, Set, and Fire,

all published by Lark/Sterling.

Her artwork and designs have been published in numerous books including 500 Baskets,
Fiber Arts Design Book 7, The Gourd Book, Fabulous Found Object Jewelry, Teapots -
Makers and Collectors, Beading with Crystals, and Creative Beading Volume 2. She does
segments for the PBS programs Beads, Baubles and Jewels and Quilting Art, and she has

had her work published in many magazines, including Art jewelry and Bead&Button.

Growing up on a farm in Indiana is what first inspired Penny French-Deal to begin the lifelong
pursuit of capturing her surroundings. Traveling throughout the United States and Europe only

further stimulated the artist within, leading Penny to create works of rhythmic depth with an
emotional stake.

Working primarily in oils, the depth of her images is masterfully created and full of color and
texture, giving Penny’s work a wondrous, emotive energy. Her loose, impressionistic style
offers the perfect combination of shapes, colors, and contrast to allow the viewer mind’s eye

to fill in the detail that completes the compelling visual story she tells in each piece. Her
resume of competitions, selected exhibits, and solo shows include (among others) the
International Painting and Mixed Media Competition, Sofia, Bulgaria, American Impressionist
Society’s Annual Juried Show, Indiana Artists, Inc., Hoosier Salon, (Indianapolis, New
Harmony and Wabash galleries), Indiana Heritage Arts, Hilbert Circle Theatre, Indianapolis,
Hoosier Women Artists awards (2009 and 2016), Manchester University (Gallery G and

Wabash resident Kristy Church is a self-taught artist who finds inspiration from
landscapes, animals, and the people in her community. Her interpretive style is
expressed through a variety of mediums. Her latest works are primarily a cold wax and
oil and stick medium. This style allows a surface to be layered and then parts of the
pieces excavated exposing prior colors and textures. “The process of discovering and
allowing the piece to dictate what it wants to be is mysterious and exciting,” said Kirsty.
Her next venture will be owning a yoga studio that will feature her art that will be for

sale. Look for The Abstract Studio, opening Spring 2019.
Candie Cooper is a jewelry designer with a passion for combining unique materials
and color combinations, inspired by extensive travel and her years living in China.

Candie is the author of Necklace-ology (Lark Books 2012), Metalworking 101 for
Beaders (Lark Books 2009), Felted Jewelry (Lark Books 2007), and Designer Needle
Felting (Lark Books 2007). Candie has appeared on the PBS television show Beads,

Baubles, and Jewels and hosts daily Facebook live shows focusing on living a
creative lifestyle. She also runs an Etsy shop out of her small cottage house that was
built in the 1800s. Candie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education and Fine Arts

from Purdue University. Make sure to follow Candie Cooper on Facebook and
Instagram, and you can also purchase her jewelry at etsy.com/shop/candiecooper.
“A storyteller I will always be. This trait echoes back to my deep Indiana family and

farming roots. My choice of subject matter depends totally upon the spark of
inspiration. It could be anything from a rusty abandoned truck to beautiful reflections

of light.”
Watercolors, oils, and pastels are Susan's favorite mediums. Her watercolors
express a love of drawing and detail. Color and motion translate vividly through her
oils and pastels. Ring's paintings have been displayed three times at the Indiana
Statehouse for the Hoosier Women Artists Competition. She has also had artwork
displayed at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Hoosier Salon, and many local

businesses. She has also won numerous awards at juried shows.
Ring’s work and note cards are for sale at the Visit Wabash County Welcome Center.
Her beautiful notecards are also available at the Peabody Unique Gift Shop in North
