ANNUAL REPORT 2018
Letter from
the Chairman of the Board
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” - Henry Ford. Just as our
Armed Forces work together every day to keep us safe, we must work together, here on the homefront, to provide the
programs and services our military so heavily rely on.
In 2018, USO of Illinois focused on growth. Growth of our community of supporters, of our programs and services and
of our footprint in Illinois. With the support of our Board of Directors and corporate partners, we silently launched
our $3 million Answer the Call Capital Campaign. The campaign focuses on three key areas of growth: improving our
centers, launching USO Pathfinder for military in transition, and strengthening our USO of Illinois team and facilities.
Campaign funds allowed us to re-establish a USO of Illinois headquarters in downtown Chicago and to develop
additional resources to ensure our programs are delivered at the level of excellence our military has come to expect.
These resources include hiring three new staff members for our new USO Pathfinder Program. An estimated 200,000
plus service members transition out of the military each year. Further, more than 650,000 military spouses are
constantly transitioning. USO Pathfinder helps transitioning and Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, National Guard and
military spouses seamlessly tackle an often complex journey from military to civilian life.
Today, we are thrilled to announce that, just a year into our fundraising effort, we have raised more than half of our
campaign goal. The Answer the Call Campaign is by far the largest fundraising effort in the history of USO of Illinois, and
we are confident that with your help, we will reach and even exceed our ambitious goals.
As the Chairman of the Board of Directors, I look back on my years of service to this organization with pride. The
growth and development of our programs and services, staff, and community outreach has allowed our organization
to serve more than 326,000 service members and their families, annually. As I transition out of my position as the
Chairman of the Board, I look forward to seeing USO of Illinois continue to grow and meet the needs of our ever-
changing military. As members of our Armed Forces answer the call to serve our nation, I invite you to continue to
support USO of Illinois and become part of the Force Behind the Forces.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018
Letter from
the President & CEO
Since 9/11, service members in Illinois have reported to boot camp, trained, deployed, come home and
transitioned, thousands of times. USO of Illinois has responded without fail and expanded programs and services
to meet needs, challenging ourselves to provide nothing short of the very best in support to our service members
and their families. These years have been extraordinary for the USO of Illinois, but in 2018 we reached a defining
moment.
The tempo and breadth of our service delivery demanded growth, and maintaining our level of excellence
required us to address the state of our USO Center facilities, launch new programs that support the changing
needs of our military, and relocate our home base in order to stabilize our operations and ready ourselves for
future generations of USO of Illinois. We launched the Answer the Call campaign to directly address these needs,
and progress has been exciting.
As our 2017 - 2018 Chairman of the Board, Joe Silich, referenced in his note launching, the Answer the Call
campaign has been a defining moment. The mark of our success is the quality of support we extend to our military
at every, single visit to a USO Center or experience at a USO Military Youth & Family and Community Connection
Program. With the help of our American public, and hundreds of dedicated USO Volunteers, we are able to do just
that. Thank you for your support and we extend our sincerest gratitude to the men, women and families of our US
Armed Forces who so bravely serve.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018
USO of Illinois is thrilled to announce the formal launch of Answer the Call, a $3 million fundraising campaign to strengthen USO of Illinois,
modernize our Centers, invest in new programs and provide outstanding services and facilities to military service members in Illinois. Just a year
into our fundraising effort, we have raised more than half of our campaign goal. The Answer the Call Campaign is by far the largest fundraising
effort in the history of USO of Illinois, and we are confident that with your help, we will reach and even exceed our ambitious goals.
Over the last two years, we have developed a vision for USO of Illinois to become a stronger, more nimble organization. This is an unprecedented
campaign for us, one that will enable USO of Illinois to anticipate and respond to a rapidly changing environment for our military.
Renovating and modernizing USO Centers
$2 million
Our highest priority is modernizing our Centers — the heart and
soul of the USO of Illinois — that serve as restorative gathering
places for troops and their families. The USO Center experience
should reflect the honor due to our military and their families.
However, sustained heavy traffic and infrequent improvements
have resulted in conditions that send the opposite message.
The 12,000-square-foot USO Great Lakes Center on Naval Station
Great Lakes — home to the U.S. Navy’s only boot camp — has not
been renovated in more than 15 years. This Center is our largest,
serving 55,000 service members and families each year. USO

and it was great to see the friendly, familiar faces.
In our four other Centers — two at O’Hare International Airport,
one at Midway International Airport, and one on Rock Island
Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois — philanthropy will provide new
furnishings and layouts, creating a high-quality, consistent user
experience for military, their families, and the volunteers who so
7 proudly and humbly serve them.
ANNUAL REPORT 2018
Answer the Call is not a campaign to simply continue what has come before. USO of Illinois seeks these funds to respond to
and anticipate a rapidly changing environment for our military.
Investing in new program delivery
$500,000
USO PathfinderSM is a new program we are launching to support service members
making the challenging transition from military to civilian life. USO Pathfinder will help
them create comprehensive transition plans for their employment, education, housing,
health, family relationships, and legal needs. Using established networks in USO of
Illinois Centers, and with military units and communities through our Military Family
Programs, we will build organizational capacity and support the development of an
enduring transition program for USO of Illinois.
Establishing a new headquarters and service center
$500,000
USO of Illinois serves more than 326,000 military and military families. From its
Chicago Loop headquarters, our staff of 15 hardworking professionals coordinate
658 volunteers contributing nearly 50,000 service hours per year and serve a diverse
and a highly-engaged Board of Directors. Campaign funds totalling $500,000 over
several years will support the relocation of our headquarters in downtown Chicago and
develop our resources to ensure our programs are delivered at the level of excellence
our military has come to expect.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018
Will you join us and answer the call?
Philanthropy is essential to our future and our ability to serve. USO of Illinois has a rich history of service for more than 77 years. And since the
first USO of Illinois club opened in 1942, a robust culture of giving has supported, honored, and comforted our troops. This support — moral
and financial — has strengthened our society’s understanding and appreciation of those who serve. We have accomplished so much because
of the caring and generosity of our donors in Chicago and throughout Illinois. With your support, we can answer the call to provide more quality
programs and services for our military members and their families.
“I answered the call to give

my father and grandfather

difference the USO made
in their lives. I honor their
legacy by supporting those
“who continue to serve our
country.
