Beads, mirrors and light. A kaleidoscope is a simple toy, but one that creates complex
colorful patterns. It’s a theme that you’ll find throughout these pages and one that we,
at Four Oaks, understand deeply.

Every year, we see the children that come to Four Oaks have more challenging cases than the year
before. They have experienced significant trauma of some kind. Their lives are complicated, and the
struggles they have are multifaceted.

We realize this at Four Oaks, but recognize from
that complexity can come splendor, but not without
hard work and a commitment to each child’s
individual success. Over the past year, we have
undertaken multiple initiatives to help children and
families heal, simplify solutions and get long-lasting
results.

As you read through this publication, you’ll get

family. We empower children and families to achieve stability, self-sufficiency and permanency.

achieve stability, self-sufficiency and permanency.

TotalChild IMPACT

TotalChild enrollment reached and
exceeded 1,000 children in 2016.
Our goal is to serve 1,400 children by 2018.
The TotalChild approach resulted in 97%
of those children maintaining
stability. Stability means their lives are
not in chaos and they’ve achieved success in a
checklist of areas which include basic needs,
education, employment, housing and family
supports.
60 TotalChild youth have reached age 18 and gone onto college,
jobs and successful adulthood. They are our future.
Expanded TotalChild into 2 communities: Mason City and
Davenport.
Presented TotalChild to industry leaders at Harvard University.
Received state funding to help comprehensively support children through
TotalChild.
Continues to build lasting community impact thanks to our collaborative spirit
with over 200 community partners throughout Iowa.

CLIENT STORY

Linda and Malik, her 15-year-old son,
were homeless when they entered the
TotalChild program. Starting off in a
temporary shelter, they transitioned to
their own apartment in a complex owned
and operated by the Affordable Housing
Network, an affiliate of Four Oaks.
Through TotalChild, Linda and Malik
connected with a number of different
services. In Linda’s words, “If it hadn’t
been for TotalChild I couldn’t have gotten
out of the shelter.

“It was like a big old circle that enclosed
me and my son and made sure we were
stable.”

Recently, Linda sat down and reflected on the last few years and how their lives have changed. With tears
running down her face Linda said, “I explained to them that I needed to be in charge of my life and my son’s
life… They provided for me the foundation to get that power back. I didn’t have it during that period of being
homeless and in the shelter… Now in this present day, I am where I am at because they provided a way for me
to get my power back.”

Malik listened quietly to this from the next room. He just started his senior year not having to worry about
where he will sleep tomorrow night. With the all-embracing work of the TotalChild Success Manager, this
three-sport athlete attends one of the best high schools in the state, has good friends, and has hope for the
future. He is remarkably resilient, with a quiet confidence and a personality that draws others to him.

Thanks to Four Oaks, his mother says, “He doesn’t have anything to worry about, he can live his life.”

“I’m not used to people just coming to my aid.
I’m used to being the one that goes to everyone else’s aid.

And to have someone come to my aid and support me,
it’s just done my heart good. I can never ever forget
the people who were there for me.”
