E ven in our advanced
digital age, scrapbooks
and journals haven’t lost
their importance. The ability
to document daily stories
and to remember bigger
occasions is still important.
Today, it may just take
different forms. Instead
of leather bound journals
and black photo corners,
it may be a family blog
or digital scrapbook.
Looking at Four Oaks’ journal over the past year, it is filled with exciting,
organization changing events such as completing two capital campaigns, the
$6 million TotalChild campaign and the $3 million Assuring Success campaign
in Mason City, welcoming Family Resources in the Quad Cities into the
Four Oaks family and reaccreditation by the Council on Accreditation.
But, more importantly, Four Oaks’ journal would be filled with thousands
of pages of our kids’ stories, with pictures taped in the margins. These
stories start with complex introductions and move through periods of
trying circumstances, but also include pages upon pages of unconditional
love. And, because we never give up on our kids, a theme of expecting
success runs throughout each.
Some stories within Four Oaks’ journal are complete, while some are still
being written. No matter where the story is, please know, that child’s
story wouldn’t have been written without your help. Thank you for allowing
the opportunity for our children’s stories to have a happy ending.
Your care, compassion and support are integral to expecting success.
We encourage you to leaf through the next few pages and
to read a few of our children and families’ stories.
They will leave you inspired.
Best regards,

Seth admits that a few years ago, he wasn’t hanging out with the best people
and he was doing things he shouldn’t. Fast-forward three years, and Seth has
graduated from high school, is in his second year at Kirkwood Community College
and plans to finish his four-year degree at Upper Iowa University.
What happened to Seth? Why did his path change so drastically? Thanks to
individuals like you, TotalChild became the answer that helped Seth achieve success.
Over the years, it’s become clear that for a child to achieve success, every
aspect of his life needs to be healthy and stable…and stay that way. TotalChild
is the comprehensive approach for helping children – staying with the child through
the twists and turns of life – ensuring the child does not fall back onto a
negative path.
Nearly five years into infusing the TotalChild approach into everything the Four
Oaks family of agencies does, results are being seen in those children who are
now beginning to enter the adult world. Seth is one of those kids.
By bringing a team of support to the table, TotalChild worked closely with

Seth, his family, his counselor, and high school to
help the teen succeed. It was during this time
that Seth’s love of being outdoors and wildlife
was discovered. “When we started talking about
his future and career, he lit up. The key was making
sure there was a team of people supporting him and his
family,” shared Seth’s TotalChild Success Manager.
Recognizing this spark, Seth’s Success Manager helped connect the teen with
Kirkwood’s Creating Futures program, coaching him through phone calls and
applications. Then it happened. Seth’s dream of working in parks and recreation
came true with the opportunity for an internship at Squaw Creek Park in
Linn County this past summer.
Seth is grateful for Four Oaks and credits TotalChild with getting him through
high school and into college. “It’s gotten me on the right track…helped me change
and realize I wanted to change. I honestly don’t know where I’d be right now.
I probably wouldn’t be in college.”

our family.” Children who come from complex backgrounds,
–Bethany, like the three sisters, often cope with trauma
from their past. Four Oaks has worked with the
mother girls and their family through the ups and downs
of their early lives. All in all, a total of six
different Four Oaks services have supported the
girls, their two brothers and their parents, helping
to provide them with additional skills and tools to
ensure the entire family succeeds. This includes
enrollment in TotalChild, which will continue to
follow the girls and their parents throughout their
childhood, offering assistance when needed.
The depth in which Four Oaks’ programs
continue to help and strengthen families —like
Layla, Kaydee and Lilith’s— is thanks to both
public and private support. It’s because of that
support that the three sisters are approaching
their one year adoption anniversary, and, just as
importantly, the girls and their entire family are
walking down a path of success.

For Cassie, stability in her children’s lives was
the one thing she cared about most. With
circumstances causing her children to enroll in
four schools in just two years, she was looking
for some way to create a constant in their
lives. She felt strongly that the stability would
play an important role in their ability to succeed.
With her goal in place, Cassie enrolled her oldest
three children: Natasia, Camryn and Zariana in
the Jane Boyd Achievement Academy Summer
Camp. The program provides a culturally and
educationally enriching environment that ensures
children are academically prepared to start the next school year with
their peers. The Achievement Academy is supported completely through
donations, with each dollar helping a child on his path to success.
Over the summer Cassie watched as her children, particularly 8-year-
old Camryn, blossomed through the program. Before starting at the
Achievement Academy, Camryn was shy and reserved. In fact, he didn’t
speak until he was three. By the end of the summer Camryn had come
out of his shell and now enjoys talking and playing with other kids.
He has grown in large ways academically as well. At the beginning of the
summer, Camryn struggled with reading. Now, thanks in large part to a
focus on reading at summer camp, Camryn has become the expert on all
things concerning animals (his topic of choice when selecting books to
read each week).
On a recent car trip, Camryn’s younger brother was doing what little
brothers do best and asking question after question to his big brother.
Camryn didn’t skip a beat and answered each question while his mom
watched in amazement. When Cassie asked her son how he knew all of
the interesting facts, Camryn promptly replied, “Mom, I read books.”
Cassie has seen growth in her other children as well and looks forward
to seeing further growth in all her children as they continue into the
Achievement Academy Afterschool program.

Planting roots, Josh and Alyssa and their two young children moved into
their new home in Wellington Heights just in time for the holidays.
The young couple’s home is the first of five new single-family homes in
an 18-block area of Wellington Heights, a core neighborhood in Cedar Rapids,
in more than 50 years. Four Oaks, Affordable Housing Network, Inc. and
Skogman Homes have partnered together through the TotalChild program, to
build the new homes as part of an effort to make families, neighborhoods
and the community stronger. It should be noted that none of the fundraising
dollars donated to the TotalChild campaign have been or will be used for
buyer assistance.
While watching their dream of owning a new home become a reality was
monumental to the family, it marks a key point in the progression of the
Wellington Heights neighborhood. Young families – like Josh and Alyssa’s
– moving to the neighborhood and putting down roots is key to accomplishing
the greater goal of revitalizing Wellington Heights. City and national statistics
further reinforce the importance of increasing the number of single-family
homes in achieving long-term neighborhood stability.
Since The Affordable Housing Network began work in Wellington Heights
in 2012, 66 homes have been renovated and 4 homes have been built. Of
the completed homes, 14 have been sold to families. The Affordable Housing
Network also manages an additional 70 properties in the neighborhood.
Josh and Alyssa and their young children are a symbol of great things
to come for the historic Cedar Rapids neighborhood.

Four Oaks welcomed Family Resources, based in
the Quad Cities, into the Four Oaks family in
July 2014. Working together creates opportunities
to enhance both organizations’ missions, increase geographic reach and create
efficiencies. The new affiliate also expands the ways in which families are helped.
Family Resources SafePath Survivor Resources is a community based program
that serves the need of all individuals and families affected by domestic or
sexual violence, human trafficking or other violent crimes. The program works to
create a community free of violence through education, counseling and advocacy.
Julie* is now in a safe and secure home thanks to SafePath. Julie came to the
Family Resources SafePath shelter with her young children after fleeing from
an abusive relationship that had become increasingly threatening to her and
the children. Upon entering the shelter, the staff connected her with
resources that helped her family to stay safe and find stable housing.
Weekly meetings were scheduled to address housing barriers and
resources, such as legal aid and state benefits, were located. The
team coordinated with each other to ensure Julie and her children’s
needs were met. Julie is now hopeful about her future.
In the coming year, Four Oaks and Family Resources will
continue to expand the collaboration between the two
organizations. This includes growth of TotalChild into the Quad
Cities, enabling even more families in need the opportunity to
discover their paths to success.
