Robert Siegel was the senior host of
National Public Radio’s All Things
Considered, America’s most-listened-
to afternoon drive news program.
He covered stories around the globe, reporting
from Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and
Asia. After 40 years working in radio news, Siegel
signed off on his final All Things Considered
broadcast on January 5, 2018.

Siegel’s many honors include a 2010 John Chancellor Award from Columbia University’s
Graduate School of Journalism as well as three Silver Batons from Alfred I. DuPont-
Columbia University. The first Baton, in 1984, recognized All Things Considered for
coverage of peace movements in East and West Germany. Siegel shared in NPR’s
1996 Silver Baton Award for “The Changing of the Guard: The Republican Revolution,”
for coverage of the first 100 days of the 104th Congress. He was part of the NPR
team that won a Silver Baton for the network’s coverage of the 2008 earthquake in
Sichuan Province, China.

Other awards include a 1997 American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award for the
two-part documentary, “Murder, Punishment, and Parole in Alabama” and the National
Mental Health Association’s 1991 Mental Health Award for his interviews conducted on
the streets of New York in an All Things Considered story, “The Mentally Ill Homeless.”

Siegel joined NPR in December 1976 as a newscaster and became an editor the
following year. In 1979, he was chosen to open NPR’s London bureau, where
he worked as senior editor until 1983. After London, Siegel served for four years
as director of the News and Information Department, overseeing production of
NPR’s newsmagazines All Things Considered and Morning Edition, as well as special
events and other news programming. During his tenure, NPR launched its popular
Saturday and Sunday newsmagazine Weekend Edition. He became host of
All Things Considered in 1987.

from the general manager

A t WUSF Public Media our mission is to produce
meaningful and relevant content that enhances the
quality of life in our community. That’s an ambitious
undertaking for what some think of as a radio station.

A radio station is what we were 56 years ago; University of South Florida students
broadcasting during a small portion of the day reaching an area barely bigger than the
size of the campus. Today, WUSF Public Media is the home of WUSF 89.7, your NPR
station with All Night Jazz; Florida’s Classical Music Station, WSMR; 5 websites; one
podcast; and a free app where you can access all of it including our news reports. Our
radio stations are heard from Crystal River to Fort Myers and east almost to Orlando
and online are heard around the world.

Reporting on issues in Manatee and Sarasota Counties has always been a high priority
for WUSF and thanks to a grant from the Manatee Community Foundation, WUSF’s
Cathy Carter took the position. As a new Manatee County resident she’d love to hear
from you when you have ideas on news we should be covering in education, on health,
sustainability and culture.

This year we’re partnering with the public radio station in Orlando to bring you election
news as part of our I-4 Corridor Election 2020 Project. It’s not the usual horse race
reporting and I hope you look forward to it on the air and online.

We’re also proud to launch WUSF’s Listen Up Luncheon which is our newest Sarasota-
Manatee event. It’s a chance for us to connect with you in support of WUSF Public
Media. I couldn’t be happier that this new annual event kicks off with our special guest,
NPR’s Robert Siegel, whose memorable voice you heard for many years hosting
All Things Considered.

Our media enterprise is thriving because of you and your personal support. We’re truly
grateful. Thank you for being with us today.
