It would be just more happy chaos for the busy actress, who has por-
trayed Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the hit ABC medical drama since 2010.
In addition to starring on Grey’s and raising her family (she shares all
three daughters with musician-writer Rob Giles, from whom she filed
for divorce earlier this year), Scorsone, 39, has also found her voice as
an advocate. The Toronto native says having Pippa, who was born with
Down syndrome, triggered a transformation that touched every facet
of her life, prompting her to learn about and fight for those with cogni-
tive differences and disabilities. This year Scorsone was awarded the
Global Down Syndrome Foundation’s Quincy Jones Exceptional Advo-
cacy Award, and while October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month,
Scorsone says the lessons she learns from Pippa and others about com-
passion and authenticity continue every day. After Pippa’s birth, “people
in the Down syndrome community told me I’d hit the jackpot,” she recalls.

Here, she writes about her earliest moments with the little girl who
changed everything and how her daughter might change others. “My hope
now is that people might see my daughter and be reminded of their own

perfect uniqueness,” she says. “That they
might see her and feel free to be loved for
every cell in their irreplaceable body.”

Tikey laughed at me. Then, as kindly
