Welcome to the August edition of The Bridge, published just as it
looks as though the weather is about to improve and we may see a
glimpse of sunshine. Our August edition is packed full of updates
from groups such as Churches Together, Age UK, and Friends of
Penistone Church which is a great sign that life is starting to slowly

resemble some normality,

As we see the weather improving slightly, you may wish to get out
and about in the fresh air and entertain children and grandchildren.
Penistone Ladies Circle have created a Rainbow Trail around
Penistone for the whole community to get involved in that might
make your walk in the fresh air fun and challenging. Check out
page 16 for more details. Linda shares more ideas to get us out
and about in her article on holidaying at home on page 20, and the
St Saviour’s Church community may inspire you to seek out some

of the local wildlife with their pictures on page 23.

However you choose to spend your August, we all hope for
sunshine and a feeling of returning to some sort of ‘new normal’.
Although our church buildings are not yet open, it is wonderful to
see some of our congregation starting to meet together in worship
pods, as our new Curate, Jo Twigg, shares with us on page 6,
which gives us hope for more worship opportunities in the future.
As we start to experience this new normal, and perhaps feel
apprehensive about heading out and about, it makes me think of
when Jesus said ‘… do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow
will worry about itself.’ As difficult as that is sometimes, it is
something I will be trying to remember as I head out to enjoy a

hopefully sunny August!

Mission Statement for the
Penistone and Thurlstone Team Ministry

Our Vision:
We are passionate about making connections between church and
community life and for the church to be able to see the whole community as
its parish.

It is important for people of the wider community to be able to get to know
their local church – with its doors open wide, and to feel a sense of belonging.

We are committed to go out through the open doors of the church - to share
God’s love in the world through our words and actions.

We recognise the need to build a culture of invitation, welcome and
hospitality where all may be touched by the friendships they encounter and
come to know the rich blessings of God.

Our Values
We believe in a church which
• Invites, welcomes, accepts and serves people where they are along their

journey of life and faith.
• Helps those who wish to explore the possibility of faith.
• Attempts to be scripturally faithful which means being open to the

possibilities of challenge through study of the Bible.
• Seeks to proclaim and be witnesses to Christ’s risen presence in the world

with the help of the Holy Spirit.
• Is innovative and creative but recognises the importance of tradition
• Helps to equip and resource all God’s people in ministry.

We hope and pray that all who are invited and welcomed may grasp how
wide and deep is the love of God and may grow as followers of Jesus.

In the spirit of invitation and welcome, we believe in a church that does
not discriminate on any level including economic power, gender
difference, mental or physical disability, race or sexuality.

Our Personality
The Church communities of the team ministry seek to be:

• Inviting, welcoming, friendly, loving and hospitable.
• We cater for both modern and traditional styles of worship.
• We expect all members of our community to practise compromise in

relation to taste or tradition in worship and ways of being church.

God is open for business

Around the Country over the past few months we have seen signs such as:
‘Due to the COVID Pandemic, this church/shop/restaurant etc. is closed until
further notice’. We have all wrestled with the ‘what now’ or, ‘I want to help,
but I need to keep a safe distance’. It has been an anxious time and we have
been sailing in un-chartered waters.

I may also venture to say that perhaps we have sensed that our God-given
purpose in life, whatever that may be, has been stripped back or reduced to
‘not much’ as we obey the Government guidance. In other words ‘closed until
further notice’.

We have all missed the gathering together in Church – where the sacred
meets the secular, where we worship God and celebrate Holy Communion,
and also where we enjoy fellowship and encouragement with one another. But
yet, somehow we have seen that although the Church is closed, God is still
open for business and that God is still with us. And therefore, we are not
closed but very much as busy albeit in a different way, by being church, as the
body of believers helping each other out as best we can. For example, once
restrictions eased, Fr David set out to meet
some of our most vulnerable and isolated
within the congregations, by conducting
worship pods in local gardens and garages!

I had the privilege of joining Fr David, and
Revd Anne was also involved separately. We
sensed the sacredness of God being with us
amongst all that He has created: the breeze in
the air, the rushing of the leaves in the trees
and the song of birds, as we celebrated a short
service with Holy Communion in one kind,
with the chalice provided as a visual aid and
got to spend some precious moments
together.

6

There may be opportunities for more worship pods to take place soon,
depending on the weather. However you plan to spend August – whether near or
far, stay safe and be rested. Take
refreshment from the summer weather.
Lastly, be hopeful in the knowledge that
God is with us and is already in
tomorrow!
Jo Twigg—Assistant Curate

Thank You, Penistone Round Table!

A big thank you to Penistone Round Table for volunteering
to cut the grass in the churchyard. During lockdown, the
grass was unable to be attended to by BMBC, and had
become rather wild. While the wildlife enjoyed it, it was in
need of a little taming. Penistone Round Table have done an
excellent job of tidying up the entire plot, whilst leaving one
small area to develop as a wildlife haven. A wonderful
example of the Penistone community spirit.

Children’s Church

Sunday the 19th July saw our last online Family Church Service until
September. The services have been wonderfully organised by some of

our congregation, and greatly appreciated by the children.

Our last one focused on the Parable of the Weeds. The children
shared plant finds or photographs and tried to decide which plants

were weeds and which were not, learning from this that sometimes
people who seem bad to us can also do things which are good.
Sometimes people who appear good, can do things which hurt other

people. It is not our job to decide who is good and bad. God wants us
to try our best to love all people. Even if it feels there are a lot of bad
things going on in the world, we know that God will make things good

in the end. Victoria Elves

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PENISTONE
AND DISTRICT

As we are all aware the lockdown restrictions have been easing
over the past few weeks. This was expressed last month with our
friends at St. Mary’s Church starting to hold their midweek and
Sunday Masses. We continue to uphold them in prayer as through
the celebration of the Eucharist they focus upon the ‘Heart of the
Gospel’.
In the meantime many churches in our area are deciding when the
time is right to open up our church buildings. This to a certain
extent is dependent upon how individual churches are governed
and processes that they may need to follow when seeking to
adhere to Government guidelines. I think it is good to reminded of
two words Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury used on
Songs of Praise a few weeks ago we need to PRAY and PREPARE.

“Pray and Prepare”

It was during lockdown though, all the different churches have
discovered new forms of worship and how to share the ‘good
news’. I just wish to express my deep appreciation, along with
many more, how some people have found it possible to use their
God given gifts to communicate the Christian faith in new ways.

12

I hope these new forms will not cease, but become part of a new
’normal’, discovering afresh what does it mean to be the Body of
Christ in this place, at this time.

As you will be aware Stephen Cottrell is our new Archbishop of
York. What impressed me was how, on the steps of York Minster,
before the waiting media, he declared that he was in the business
of sharing the Good News about Jesus, working alongside other
churches.

Within the United Reformed Church, the Yorkshire Synod, of
which St. Andrew’s Church is apart, with it being a Methodist/
U.R.C. Local Ecumenical Partnership, we have a new Moderator. It
is Jamie Kissack, who is based at Morley near Leeds. Prior to his
appointment he was one of three ministers that form the Sheffield
Group of U.R.C., of which St. Andrew’s is a part.

The Methodist Conference was not able to meet physically this
year, but managed to complete its business virtually through the
use of modern technology. You will be pleased to hear that it was
noted Fr. David our Team Rector was recognised as an Authorised
Minister of the Methodist Church, having been formally welcomed
in January of this year at St. Andrew’s Church . I would encourage
you to go on line and see in particular
the Addresses of our President and
Vice Presidents for 2020/21.

Finally, at some point in the future we
might be able to complete the Alpha
Course that we started at St. Mary’s at
the beginning of Lent 2020. In the
meantime let us uphold one another in prayer as together we
discover what it means to be the United in Christ and how we can
share the Good News about Jesus.

If you are looking for something to entertain the children or grandchildren
(or indeed the adults of your family) you might want to take part in the
Penistone Ladies Circle Rainbow Trail throughout August 2020!

The Rainbow Trail is being held to raise money for The Children's Heart
Surgery Fund and is something that all members of the local community
can get involved in!

A map has been uploaded to the event page on Facebook (seen opposite)
ready for the trail going live on 1st August. You can see the event on their
Facebook page, or shared via the St John’s page. Simply download the
map, or print it from here, then follow the trail to find all seven rainbows
hidden around Penistone! Each rainbow has a corresponding letter or
symbol, find all of the rainbows to reveal a hidden message!

Once you have found all the letters and unscrambled the hidden message,
visit their Just Giving page via this link https://tinyurl.com/y7ka4hhl to
make your donation and send a private message to them via their
Facebook event page to receive your certificate of participation. The
suggested donation is £1 per person, or £3 per family, but any amount is
gratefully received.

Your donations will allow them to support The Children's Heart Surgery
Fund in helping children and adults born with congenital heart defects
across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. You can find out more about
The Children's Heart Surgery Fund by visiting their website at

St John’s Friends

Burial Ground Project update July 2020

The AGM and the last meeting of the Friends’ committee was
cancelled as I am sure you are aware due to the ongoing crisis. I
was concerned that the projects which we had in hand might be
delayed or lost altogether but with the help of a friend, Richard
Galliford, I can now update you on our progress to date.

Our main project at the time was the Burial Ground Project.
We had already completed the survey of the graveyard through
the company Atlantic Geomatics and they have produced an
interactive map of the location of all burials in our graveyard.

The next part of the project, which we were about to begin,
was to populate the digital map will all the information from all
the graves such as photos, locations, names, dates and whatever
other information might be
found on a gravestone. At first
sight this would be an
enormous task first to collect
the information and then to
input it into the database. I
visited the site alone for a few
days and found it impossible to
work on. I mentioned my
problems to Richard who put
me in touch with people down
at Wortley who were
undertaking a similar project
and after meeting with them
we planned a way forward.

18

I held a meeting at Church for those interested in where we
might be able to have volunteers help and then the lockdown
started. So we came up with an alternative plan where Richard
would take a photo of every grave (pre 1930) and then upload
them to the database; I would then, in the comfort of my own
home, work through them and input what could be found on the

gravestones.

I can assure you we ‘We have made some
have made some quite amazing
quite amazing
discoveries in our
churchyard.’
discoveries in our

churchyard and I
expect there are many stories still to be found. And it is with

this in mind that if you have any story or memory which would

be linked to a family grave here please contact me so that this
resource can be enhanced by your experiences. Further – if you

can help with working on a more detailed information collection,

please let me know.

My following articles in the coming months will take a look at
some of these but for now let me tease you with just a few of
the subjects linked to fascinating stories which are a part of
Penistone’s rich history: poetry; mathematics; fellwalking;

football and local and national history.

Please contact me for any reason regarding this fabulous project.

The Staycation

Much has been muted in the media that this year, because of the
perils of the pandemic, a staycation will be the only option for
most people in this holiday month of August. A staycation to
some means having a holiday in the U.K. but I think it means
staying at home and exploring the world around your home.
A staycation can be fun but probably needs a little bit of planning
and forward thinking. We do not want to stay at home (we have
had enough of that in lockdown) but our home is our hotel for
this holiday! The first thing, if you can, is swop your bedroom.
We did because we were having a new carpet in ours so went into
the spare bedroom. It was different and I did feel as if I was on
holiday. I know not everyone can do this but if you change
something and think its a 4* room - you are on holiday!
We have had one staycation already due to being in a vulnerable
age group and the need to protect ourselves as we come out of
lockdown. The virus is still out there, yet we wanted to meet
family and friends again safely and do
something different like you do on holiday.
We are very fortunate in Penistone because
we have so many places around us to visit
that are Covid friendly, and we have a
good transport network which links us to
Sheffield, Barnsley and Huddersfield.

20

We are members of the National trust so we have had days out
meeting friends with a picnic at Fountains Abbey, Clumber Park
and Nostell Priory. You must book your place the Friday before
you go, as numbers are controlled so you are not in any danger of
being swamped by hordes of others. Some houses are now open,
but the grounds of these places are lovely to walk in, are ideal for
socially distanced picnics, and they have toilet facilities.

Other places nearby are Thoresby Park, Cannon Hall, the
Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the museums in Sheffield, and the
Trans Pennine trail. There are so many “safe places” to go that in
everyday life we haven’t had the time to visit, so we can now
discover them and more in our next staycation. Again, to make it
special, have something different for your picnic and evening
meal. Treat yourself - after all you are on holiday! But remember
to bring your litter home and avoid touching gates, walls and
doors, and take your sanitiser. The new normal.
Enjoy.

“Wild-Life”

23

It has been a very strange and difficult time for everyone during this
Coronavirus lockdown period and we at Age UK Barnsley have been
working hard to maintain a support service to the older people living in
Penistone and the surrounding villages.
We have been supporting the more vulnerable older people in this
community with a shopping service and collecting prescriptions. Our
volunteers have also been maintaining contact by making phone calls
on a regular basis to make sure that our service users have been coping
well and to ensure that they have a phone call to look forward to and a
chat with a friendly person at the other end. We would like to say a big
thank you to all our volunteers, including the new volunteers who
came forward to help when lockdown restrictions were first imposed.
We couldn’t have done it all without you.
Since the beginning of April we have made 81 wellbeing phone calls;
completed 93 shopping requests; delivered over 60 care boxes and
collected 8 prescriptions.
The care boxes contained essential groceries and household products
together with a few treats and a puzzle book. The Probation Service
provided volunteers to help deliver them out into the community to
service users on our vulnerable list.
We also set up an activities club to enable our service users to take part
in a range of activities without having to leaving their homes; this was
especially welcomed by those people who were self-isolating and
shielding due to having underlying health conditions. We have
provided 95 activity packs in the Penistone area and these covered a
number of themes such as Foodie Club, Wild Life in your Garden and
Write for Fun. There were 10 activities to choose from in total but it
gives you an idea of what was available and it proved extremely
popular.

24

We have received positive feedback from people we have supported:
Activities Club: “Well, I can’t believe it, what a
fantastic thing you are doing, these activities will keep
me going for ages, thank you”.

Wellbeing phone call: “It’s just so lovely having
someone to talk to, since lockdown I don’t see
anybody and the days can be long. I’ve now got
something to look forward to because I know
someone is going to call me, thank you, it’s made
such a difference”.

We have been able to continue providing our Information and Advice
service during this period, although it has been via phone calls only.
Between the beginning of April and the end of June there has been a
total of £31,378.16 of estimated gains – this is the total value of
benefits that service users have been able to claim as a result of using
our service.

The Community Car Scheme has not been able to operate since the
middle of March but we hope to resume this service as soon as
Government guidelines allow us to do so. The Men in Sheds
(Penistone) project has also been on hold due to all events and
activities being suspended. We will provide an update as soon as we
are able to start meeting again along with the other activities and
groups which we usually run on a regular basis.

If you have any queries please give us a call or send an email and we
will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Lent 2020

As part of my Lenten observance this year (it does seem a lifetime
ago) I decided to recycle cat food pouches. I became aware that it
was possible to recycle cat/dog food pouches from a coupon in a
box of cat food announcing that “Whiskas has partnered with
TerraCycle to launch the first European Pet Food Recycling
programme.” Encouraged by The Archbishop of Canterbury, Lent
provoked me to Google “TerraCycle”.
It turns out that TerraCycle is world leader in the collection and
reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste. TerraCycle reuses,
upcycles and recycles waste into new items instead of incinerating
or land filling it. Have a look for yourself, if you’re concerned
about eliminating waste it will excite you.

The used plastic pet food packaging is sorted, shredded and
washed. Food residue is composted. The material is processed to
be converted into hard-granulated plastic granules. The granules
are then extruded to be incorporated into the production of
different plastic products such as fence posts and benches.

To recycle you are asked to: make
sure all excess product has been
removed (i.e. leftover product) from
the packaging, and rinse the wet food
pouches thoroughly and let them dry.
You can send the cleaned pouches via
UPS, full details on the TerraCycle
website, or even easier take them to
Silkstone Common Methodist
Church, Ben Bank Rd, Silkstone
Common, S75 4PA. They have an
outside bin (take the path to the left
of the main gate) and leave them
there. A Lenten observance that has
become a habit.. Sharon Unsworth

The Tale of Tilly Wadham

Tilly Wadham is a strong female. She lives alone in a detached
residence, surrounded by well tended gardens. During the winter
months she prefers somewhere a little warmer. She is rather coy about
her age, but those who know her believe she came to live in the U.K.
in the early 1980's. How she ended up in Surbiton, Surrey is a
mystery.
Her needs are simple, she enjoys the odd dip in the pool and a daily
delivery of fruit and veg. Also regular visits from a cleaning lady.
Oh I must mention a very important fact that Tilly is a tortoise!
Tilly belongs to my friend Mary. We both worked together in an Infant
School near Kingston-upon -Thames. One of our activities was a “Tilly
Day”. Mary would bring her to visit the class, and we wrote stories and
poems about her, did wonderful drawings and other art work.
I had a catch up with Mary recently and of course I always ask after
Tilly. Well, it appears that Tilly is not only very much still alive, but
she had recently laid 11 eggs! Can you believe that?! One was broken,
but the rest were fine. Sadly there won't be any baby tortoises because
up to now she hasn't met Mr Right. That asks the question - where do
tortoises go to meet other tortoises? Speed dating would be a definite
no no!
For a week or so before the event she was off her food, but once she
had produced the eggs she was ravenously hungry. If any of you have
heard of this happening elsewhere I would be so interested to know.

30

“Her needs are simple, she enjoys the odd dip in the
pool and a daily delivery of fruit and veg.”

The biggest event of her life occurred a few years ago when she went
missing for 36 hours. Mary searched everywhere for her. Finally she
was found submerged in the garden pond. After a quick dash to the vet,
all she needed were eye drops to clear an infection. The vet thought
that the cold water probably sent her into hibernation mode.

When the colder weather arrives in Surbiton, Mary makes sure Tilly
moves to her winter residence in the garage. She sleeps the winter
away, and emerges happily in the Spring ready for who knows what
adventures.

So that is the tale of Tilly. She still goes into
school, because Mary's granddaughter is
now a pupil. A new generation of children
are learning all about her. Don't know about
you, but life as a tortoise sounds quite
appealing in the current climate.
