Ph.D Programme
(a) A Master’s degree in related fields from any of the institution of

higher learning recognised by the University Senate; OR
(b) A ny other equivalent qualification recognised by the University

Senate.

Ph.D (by Publication) Programme
(a) A Master’s degree in engineering with at least five (5) years

experience in related fields;
(b) An executive summary of the publication showcasing the results

of research;
(c) A compilation of most recent research (not more than five (5)

years);
(d) Curriculum vitae and list of publications.
(e) Applicants must be a Malaysian citizen.

Industrial Ph.D Programme
(a) Applicants must currently be an employee in industry in

Malaysian as an engineer, researcher or equivalent.
(b) Possess a Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent from

university by the Malaysian government or an equivalent
qualification recognised by the University Senate of UniMAP.
(c) Applicants must be a Malaysian citizen.

M.Sc/Ph.D Programme
(a) A Bachelor’s degree in related fields or other equivalent

qualification recognised by the Univerisity; AND
(b) Attained a minimum CGPA of 3.30 or equivalent; OR
(c) Attained a minimum grade of 75% or equivalent for international

applicants.
(d) Applicants must register in full-time mode.

Master’s Programme - Research and Mixed Mode
(a) A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related fields with a minimum

CGPA of 2.75 from a university recognised by the University
Senate; OR
(b) A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related fields with a minimum
CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, can be accepted
subject to rigorous internal assessment;
(c) A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related fields not meeting

IMMIGRATION INFORMATION

Student Pass Application
Every International Student is required to have a valid
identification document and student pass for purpose
of study in Malaysia. With effect from January 2014,
all foreigners who want to enter Malaysia to study are
required to obtain the Visa with Reference (locally known
as VDR) or calling visa before entry. VDR will be issued
by the Malaysian Representatives Office abroad to a
non-citizen to enable individuals to enter Malaysia after
the Visa is approved by the Immigration Department of
Malaysia.

Effective from 1st October 2016 a new online Student Visa
application system was launched to provide convenient,
fast and professional services to international students. In
line with the new development, the Centre for International
Affairs (CIA) administration has agreed that all new
candidates who have received an offer of admission must
apply for Student Visa directly through the EMGS Student
Visa application system. Please note that the online EMGS
Student Visa Application system is only applicable for
candidates who are residing outside Malaysia at the
time of their application. For candidates who are residing
in Malaysia and are currently enrolled at other Malaysian
higher institutions and are holding valid visa and passes
please refer to CIA for further instructions.

IMPORTANT:
Only application with complete documents shall
be processed. Completed applications from and
all documents are to be sent to: CENTRE FOR
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA
PERLIS (UniMAP), Student Centre, School of
Mechatronic Engineering, Pauh Putra Main Campus,
02600 Arau, Perlis.

We will email to you the VDR upon approval, after which
you can proceed to the nearest Malaysia Embassy/
Consulate Office to stamp the visa in your passport. The
VDR approval takes about 2 until 4 months (working
days).

DO NOT Purchase your flight ticket until you have obtain
the VDR approval. The Immigration Law of Malaysia DO
NOT ALLOW foreigners entering Malaysia on a special
pass or tourist/visa to apply for student pass.

Traveling to Malaysia
To travel to Malaysia and to facilitate entry into Malaysia,
you are requested to bring with you the following:
• A valid International Passport.
• Original copy of the offer letter.
• Approval letter from the Malaysia Immigration

Department

Entering Malaysia
Please take note that most international flights arrive in
Kuala Lumpur and you will need to do the immigration
clearance in Kuala Lumpur before departing for your
domestic flights. Cer tain airlines do operate flights direct
to Penang and the immigration clearance will be at Penang
airport.

If you are traveling by road from Singapore, the
immigration clearance will be at Johor Bahru Immigration
Check-Point. If you are traveling by road from Thailand to
the main campus, the immigration clearance is at Bukit
Kayu Hitam Immigration Check-Point or at Padang Besar
Immigration Check-Point.

Irrespective of your port of entry in Malaysia, you will
have to go through the immigration and passport control.
Please present your passport together with Immigration
Approval Letter to the Immigration Officer, who will
provide you the entry pass.

SUPPORT SERVICES

University Library

The University Library provides access to reaserch materials
including books, journals, theses and dissertations, research
reports in both printed and electronics format. We also
provide facilities and services related to information access
covering:
• References service, Document supply, Borrowing, Remote

access to electronic resources, Self-Services including
self-check and book drop station and many others.

Access to e-Resources

User may have access to electronic books and journals either
on Campus Network or remotely from their home and offices,
local or abroad. This is possible when individual users are
connected to the resources via EZproxy server.

Self-access Lab

Postgraduate students are provided with research and
computer laboratories to assist them in completing their
research.

ACCOMMODATION

UniMAP provides hostel facilities for postgraduate students
and they should apply through the Residential Principal Office
(RPO). Hostel units for postgraduate students are limited.

Centre for International Affairs (CIA)

The Centre for International Affairs (CIA) is a one-stop
centre which will help you to settle down quickly here in
Perlis and at UniMAP. CIA offers a wide range of services
to international students and staff members. The services
