4. WWF-Malaysia Project Consultation on Sustainable Retailers Scorecard

In Malaysia, the retail industry continues to gain momentum. Key factors of this growth has been identified
to be robust economic growth, rising population, the growing youth segment, changing consumer trends,
rising purchasing power and the penetration of international players. Hypermarkets such as Tesco, AEON
and GCH Retail (who are the parent company for retailers such as Giant and Cold Storage), account for
43% of Malaysian grocery sales in 2017. Combined, these retailers holds 54% of the Malaysian grocery
retail market. As such, it is important for these retailers to be wholly or more sustainable in their producing
and purchasing practices.

The Sustainable Markets Programme from WWF-Malaysia (SMP) intends to conduct a performance study
on the FMCG retail market in Malaysia, in the form of a Sustainable Retailers Scorecard to analyse the
current state of sustainability in the retail market and in line with government’s effort towards zero single-
use plastics.

Hence, an initial discussion was called upon request by WWF-Malaysia to consult with UM Eco-
Campus Secretariat as one of their strategic partner.

There are 4 key areas of interest on the assessment of this Sustainable Retailers Scorecard:

1. Sustainable packaging (focusing on packaging used for house-brand products)/Responsible
forestry products and supply-chain
2. Waste management and circular economy practices
3. Green initiatives and consumer outreach
4. Sustainable sourcing/sustainability policies and requirement towards suppliers

11. The RIMBA Project: Winged Trees Upkeeping & Maintenance Project

This is part of the initiative taken up by The RIMBA Project, one of our pioneer UM Eco-Campus & UM
Living Labs working on conservation of Biodiversity and Landscape Management in UM

The Winged Fruit Trees: Dipterocarps are some of the largest and most characteristic trees of the
tropical forest, these are slow-growing trees that produce winged fruit, dispersed by wind. With a total
planting area of 3,000 square metres opposite of Faculty of Engineering (next to Samali Tree), a group of
volunteers both from UM and general public came together for these winged trees upkeeping and
‘maintenance’ to make sure its grow healthily over the coming years.

Volunteers are also exposed on mulching method. A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface
of soil. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of
the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area.

TIPS: For an annual bed, remove old mulch before you till the soil and add compost. If you're applying
mulch to a perennial bed, you might be tempted to just add a new layer of mulch on top, but this can

cause rot, nutrient starvation, and plant death. Remove as much of the old layers as possible before
you add more.

Kudos to The RIMBA Project and all volunteers on this initiative.

Date: 23rd February 2019 (Saturday)
Time: 9:00 am to 12 pm

12. UM Attended the Training the Trainers on Green Technology Application for the
Development of Low Carbon Cities (GTALCC) by SEDA Malaysia

Date: 25 February 2019 (Monday)
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Venue: Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), Putrajaya

Malaysia is one of the most rapidly urbanising countries in Asia with more than 72% (as of 2010
Census) and Malaysia’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission levels are relatively high compared to other
countries in the region at similar stages of development.

Recognizing that sustainable economic development is closely tied to the ability of the country to move to
a low carbon climate resilient development pathway, and that cities are natural partners to chart a low
carbon growth path, the Government of Malaysia has formulated the Green Technology Applications
for the Development of Low Carbon Cities (GTALCC) project. The project aspires to transform the way
cities plan and develop so as to promote the application of green low carbon technologies and mobilise
cities to fully contribute to the national low carbon development agenda.

A called for Focus Group Discussion was made by Sustainable Energy Development Authority
(SEDA) Malaysia under the activity of Training the Trainers to review the training curriculum. UM is
represented by UM Eco-Campus Secretariat (Prof. Dr Sumiani Yusoff & Mr M. Fadhli Rahmat Fakri) and
Department of Development & Estate Maintenance (JPPHB - Ar. Sharifah Noor Nazim Syed Yahya, Mr
Kalaivhaanan Chokkalingam aka SK, & Mr M. Ramzi M. Ruslan). UM was invited on this FGD as the sole

representative for Higher Education Institution (HEI) joining other Local Authorities (LAs) across Malaysia.

The FGD aimed to:

Deliberately discuss on Executing Strategy Number 2 - 'Awareness and institutional capacity
development' (curriculum & module development to enhance public understanding and stakeholders
adoption of Low Carbon Cities Framework - LCCF)

Strategies to be considered:

1. In-depth understanding on the concept of Carbon / Low Carbon
2. Incentive mechanism based on institutional level
3. Top Management Endorsement & Support

4. Enhance the content of previous module to be delivered by experts based on field
5. The importance of reporting and mapping of institutional initiatives
6. The importance of recognition mechanism

7. Low carbon leadership is crucial at institutional level - continuous capacity building is needed both at
national & internal

8. Increase public acceptance and participation, e.g: MBPJ - Green Rebate Scheme (for residents fulfilling
green initiatives at their residential area will be rewarded - per registration + on-site audit)

9. Terminologies used in LCCF must be able to be comprehended at all level, inclusive of laymen/general
public

10. MGTC is currently short-handed on trainers to cover the needs at Malaysian-wide level, all respective
representative will soon be provided a platform to undergo a complete series of training and will then be
appointed as certified trainer by Malaysia Green Tech Corporation (MGTC)

11. Specific funding is needed to support the implementation of LCCF at community level/large scale
programs under PBTs / Local Authorities (LAs).

national recycling rate is about 11% and UM have surpassed the national average within the campus. Our
target is for UM to reach a 60% recycling rate, which is the recycling rate in developed countries.

At the UM Intelligent Recycle Centre (IRC), students and university visitors are able to discard
newspapers, aluminium cans and plastic bottles and receive reward points. The points vary based
on the type of recyclable item. Once a certain number of points are accumulated, they can be redeemed
for items such as compost, food discounts at selected canteens on campus and T-shirts.

Inspired by the successful Saving Water Kit initiative by PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, the
hardworking people at CPDM (Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing) Faculty of Engineering,
University of Malaya led by Dr. Raja Ariffin Raja Ghazilla teams-up with JPPHB and Water Warriors to
manufacture an in-house, simple, low-cost device which can reduce water flow significantly from taps.

It is a 4-hole water restrictor which looks like a 'button' just before the aerator in the tap. And it’s been
given the name: Mr. Thimble.

For a pilot project, the team has tested the device in one of the surau (musolla), and the result has shown
that there’s at least 50% water flow rate reduction after installing the thimble on the taps. That’s plenty
of water saved! To date, Water Warriors team have installed Mr Thimble at all respective musolla campus-
wide. We seek your cooperation not to dismantle it as part of your support in reducing unnecessary water
wastage.

Collaborators: CPDM (Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing) Faculty of Engineering UM,
