3. Initial Strategic Discussion with UM Faculty Sustainability Report Card 2019

UM Living Lab LL041-18SUS (The Faculty Sustainability Report Card) Team led by Dr. Norizah
Hassan (Faculty of Languages and Linguistics UM) have conducted an initial strategic discussion between
the team and UM Eco-Campus representative in particular area of UI GreenMetric World University
Rankings (UIGM), Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) and Times Higher Education University Impact
Rankings on Sustainable Development Goals (THE SDGs).

Objectives of this project:
1. To produce a common indicators of sustainability practices for use in the faculties/academies and
institutes in University of Malaya

2. To communicate and create awareness of the University initiatives in sustainability

3. To address each of the three major areas of sustainability (Environment, Social and Economic) in the
development and formulation of the Report Card

4. UM Living Lab - Water Warriors:

Public Lecture on Place-Based Method (PBM)

as an Approach in Sustainability Science Research
Special thanks to UM Living Lab - Water Warriors, the Department and Science and Technology
Studies, Faculty of Science and Sustainable Places Research Institute (PLACE), andCardiff

University (Led by Dr Sara MacBride-Stewart) for organizing this seminar. Thanks UM Living Lab - The
RIMBA Project and RIMBA Ilmu for hosting the venue.

This public seminar on "Place-Based Method as an Approach for Sustainability Science Research" is part
of capacity building activity under a Newton Ungku Omar Advanced Fellowship Grant. This seminar
combined the presentations by three experienced researchers and practitioners from PLACE on the
theoretical and practical value of place-based methods as an approach for sustainable development.

Seminar abstract:

Despite claims that globalization and technological innovation result in the ‘transcendence of place’, place
persists as a constituent element of social life and of historical change, but approaches needs to pay
attention to spatial and temporal scales. Based on these understandings, these presentations consider
concepts, methodologies and practices for the study of place, that address the ways in which place can be
incorporated into sustainable development practice and policy.

5. Initial Discussion on UM Living Lab Green Procurement

In Malaysia, Government Green Procurement (GGP) is defined as procurement of products, services
and works that take into account environmental criteria and standards for protecting the
environment and natural resources and minimize or mitigate the negative effects of human
activities.

In UM, one dedicated project entitled UM Living Lab - Embedding Shades of Green in UM’s Reporting
Practices led by Dr Zarina Zakaria (Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Business and Accountancy
UM) is the caretaker of UM Eco-Campus Core Area 06: Green Procurement.

Aims of the project are as follows:

1. To collate relevant information in developing Carbon Management Plan for UM

2. To produce Environmental Sustainability Report for UM (Year 2017) by incorporating relevant elements
within the Global Reporting Index (GRI) which will eventually contribute to 'Education and Research'
Criteria of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (UIGM).

3. To promote awareness on benefits of Environmental Sustainability Report and transfer the knowledge
of its preparation to UM's community.

Hence, an initial discussion was called upon request by the team represented by Mr Shamsul
Rizwan Ghazalli (Senior Assistant Bursar, Payment & Staff Financial Management
Division, Bursary Department UM) with assistance of Mr. Yeamin Jacky (Research Assistant) to consult
with UM Eco-Campus Secretariat as one of their strategic partner.

6. Initial Discussion on Sustainable Transportation System
with ORide Micro Mobility Solution

ORIDE (M) Sdn. Bhd. is a company focusing on micro-mobility solutions, specializing in Electric Bicycle
and Bike Sharing. They are currently very proactive in assisting Universities in achieving "Green-Campus"
status with dedication in integrated urban mobility solutions. ORIDE (M) offers a Public-Private-
Partnership (PPP) as their sustainable business model.

Hence, an initial discussion was called upon request by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development)'s Office
for a project proposal presentation by ORIDE (M) to UM Campus Sustainability Team (Sustainable
Transportation) which consists of:

7. Strategic Discussion between UM Living Zero Waste Campaign (UM ZWC)
with CIMB-Bank Foundation

UM Living Lab Zero Waste Campaign have attended a strategic discussion session with CIMB-
Bank Foundation as part of long term planning in order to initiate and extend a strategic partnership
between these two parties in particular within the areas of sustainable waste management and organic
composting initiative that is unique to UM Zero Waste Campaign.

8. UM Eco-Free Market by UMLL Imarah Green Project

(Transformation of the Role of Eco-Surau Academy of Islamic Studies UM)

Imarah Eco Friends Club, Academy of Islamic Studies with University of Malaya Living Lab Imarah
Green Project and its strategic partner NGO’s Eco Free Market, PPR Kerinchi community, and
Masjid Jamek al-Khadijiah, Pantai Dalam have organized UM Eco Free Marketwith the
theme ‘Nurturing the Goodness for Man and Nature’ where valuable items or even second used items
with good condition are not traded or sold, rather given to visitors and people in-need to take home any
item for free.

The objective of the event was to create a good community engagement (CE) and networking in
sustainability aspect and encouraging people to be involved in preserving the environment
through the concept of reuse. Other aims of this event were to introduce the Lestari Shop; one of the
outputs of Imarah Green Project UM Living Labs: serves as a collection center of used goods such as
variety of textiles, books, shoes, electronic, and home decorative items.

The programme started with a greeting speech delivered by Mr. Sabri Yaakob (Chairman of Block A,
PPR Kerinchi), followed by a speech regarding Eco Free Market concept by Mr. Rahmat Bayudi(Co-
Founder of Eco Free Market), he emphasized the way of interaction during Eco Free Market among visitor
and contributor. Miss Hidayah Hamdan (President of IEF Club) as an event emcee from Imarah Eco
Friends Club, APIUM shared about the Imarah Eco Friends Club under the auspices of UM Living Lab
Imarah Green Project. In the middle of this event, the programme was then continued with a speech
delivered by Miss Aishah Hassan (Research Assistant of Imarah Green Project Surau
APIUM) shared with visitors about the Implementation of UM Eco Campus initiative through UM Living
Lab Imarah Green Project Surau APIUM which emphasis on transforming research into action for the
benefits of community at large.

The pinnacle highlight of the event was the UM Eco Free Market itself visited by more than 215 people
of PPR Kerinchi and people of Lembah Pantai with support from 20 contributors from varies
background. The visitor especially children were very happy with the UM Eco Free Market and they really
hope it could be repeated in the future. The programme ends at 12.00 pm with the photo session of
contributors and volunteers of Imarah Eco-Friends Club.

Concurrent with this event, Imarah Green Project also co-organized another program on Eco-Surau with
collaboration of Surau of 8th Residential College (KK8) UM. The program was handled by Dr. M.
Alihanafiah (Co-Researcher of UM Living Lab Imarah Green Project).

9. Strategic Discussion with HEPA UM - UM Eco-Surau Capacity Building









































Mr. Mizra Hilmi Abu Bakar, Head of Student Affairs Division, Department of Student Affairs and
Alumni (HEPA) UM have called for a strategic discussion with UM Eco-Campus team on the collaborative
proposal of UM Eco-Surau Capacity Building Program Phase I: Residential Colleges' Surau in UM.

Among highlights of the discussion:

1. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) and HEPA UM are in consensus to fully support
the initiative to transform all surau at respective 12 Residential Colleges into Eco-Surau Model

2. Capacity Building Program on UM Eco-Surau will be conducted by UM Eco-Campus & UM Living Lab
Imarah Green Project as mentors

3. All respective representatives of 12 Residential Colleges will be invited to attend the training session to
be held in April 2019

4. Only attending RCs (Capacity Building Program) will be considered for a seed funding of RM500.00 per
college to initiate or enhance sustainability elements/practices/initiatives at their surau

5. The Best Eco-Surau Model (based on site-audit and assessment by judges) will be awarded at the
annual gathering of Maulidurrasul commemoration in UM

10. Initial Discussion with Bukit Kiara Sunrise Rotary Club: UM Eco-Campus Initiatives





























































The country’s only Sunrise Rotary Club, use a very hands-on and down-to-earth approach to
their projects and activities. Every project involves the participation of members as doers. Most of the
club’s projects are cost-efficient and generally self-supporting. The club has also built up an extensive
network of ‘partners in service’ by tapping into the contacts of their own members to develop effective
working relationships with outside parties to promote Rotary and community service. Their community
projects promote education, health and relief for the needy. Recently, Bukit Kiara Sunrise Rotary Club is
interested to explore and adopt sustainability practices as part of their activities. Hence, an initial
discussion was made to initiate sharing of experience and best practices model between the two
parties.

11. Strategic Discussion with DHES Alam Flora: 3R on Wheels Project









































Established in 2013, DRB-HICOM Environmental Services Sdn. Bhd. (DHES) is a fully-owned subsidiary
company of Alam Flora Sdn. Bhd (AFSB) under DRB-HICOM Berhad Group.

A team from DHES Alam Flora have responded to UM Eco-Campus proposal for collaboration on
sustainable waste management initiative. Hence, DHES Alam Flora suggested to launch 3Rs on Wheels
project in UM campus vicinity. Some of the 'perks' for participating in this program hopefully will entice
more individual and community to practice 3Rs: Petronas Mesra Reward Card mechanism on which
points collected are redeemable at any Petronas Mesra Shop.

12. Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP)'s Visit to UM Eco-Campus

UM Eco-Campus Secretariat & UM Living Labs would like to extend our appreciation to our special visitors
from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).

This visit was part of the #projeksemaianbudi Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP); aims to learn best
practices from UM campus sustainability model in charting a good track record in UI GreenMetric World
University Rankings (UIGM) and other relevant campus sustainability assessment. UM Zero Waste
Campaign (UM ZWC) team led the briefing session and site visit.

UM was part of the site visit locations beside International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and National
Zoo Malaysia.

13. 1st ATRIUM@20 by Associate Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation)

Professor Dr. Shaliza Ibrahim (Associate Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation UM) have
initiated a session called 'Atrium@20' to all residing members of the Research Management and
Innovation Complex (RMIC), University of Malaya. This session is part of the initiative aims to promote a
healthier working culture and environment and to promote better engagement among staffs from
different units or centres.

ATRIUM: In architecture, an atrium (plural: Atria or Atriums) is a large open air or skylight covered space
surrounded by a building. Atria were a common feature in Ancient Roman dwellings, with the aims to
provide light and ventilation to the interior.

@20: 20 minutes-break to all staffs on Wednesdays from any official works to gather at the common
space located at 6th floor of the RMIC.

Specific time allotted for Atrium@20: 3:30 pm to 3:50pm on every Wednesdays.

14. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on UM Faculty Sustainability Report Card 2019



















































































Respective University of Malaya faculties/academies and centers management representatives have
participated in UM Living Lab project Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on UM Faculty Sustainability
Report Card.

Dr Norizah Hassan (FBL) leads the project with assistance from her dedicated research team from
Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Built Environment & Faculty of Computer Science and Information
Technology (FSKTM) UM.

The FGD aims to gather faculties preliminary feedback, opinions and recommendations on the
Faculty Sustainability Report Card. The report card will be developed with the aims to address gaps on
campus community participation and contribution at academic PTjs level towards realizing the aspiration
of transforming UM as an eco-campus.

UM Eco-Campus would like to congrats Dr Norizah and team on this remarkable initiative. Thanks to all

Sustainable Development Goals or commonly known as SDGs are a set of 17 overarching goals cutting
across social, economic and environmental aspects to be achieved by the year 2030

As part of UM efforts in preparing our campus activities to be aligned with the mainstream agenda
introduced by the United Nations in 2015, UM Eco-Campus have put forth a proposal to UM Corporate
Communications Office (CCO) to include a section on SDGs on e-Majlis platform and ‘Borang
Permohonan Penganjuran Program (Persidangan/Seminar/Bengkel/Forum/Syarahan Umum). This
initiative aims to map all UM activities (contributions) to (specific) SDGs

Special thanks to Ms. Nazihah (CCO UM) and her good office for the opportunity to work together in
strategizing our efforts to make SDGs one of the mainstream agenda, in phases, to all members of the
university: staff and students

UM is one of the pioneer participating universities in Malaysia in Times Higher Education World University
Impact Rankings on SDGs which was successfully submitted under the coordination of UM Global
Strategic Planning Center (PPSG). The official result of THE SDGs will be released in April 2019 in Korea.

Faculty of Science Students Council Representative, Mr. Muhammad Safwan Mohd Shafie, 2nd year
student enrolled in Actuarial Science, Institute of Mathematical Sciences (ISM), Faculty of Science
UM have reached out to UM Eco-Campus Secretariat for an initial discussion. Aims of the discussion is to
seek advice and suggestions on how to embed elements of eco-campus and campus sustainability to be
adopted at Faculty of Science, especially to increase participation from both staff and students to support
the agenda. UM Eco-Campus is represented by Mr. Mohd Fadhli for the consultation.

Special thanks to Professor Dr Ronald Holzhacker from University of Groningen, Netherlands for his
brief visit to UM Eco-Campus Secretariat Office. This visit was part of his own initiative to learn more on
campus sustainability efforts and its social impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

UM Eco-Campus team took the pleasure of sharing UM’s initiatives based on the platform of UM Living

Labs Grant Programme (UMLL GP). He also shared that the organization that he’s currently heading,
SEA ASEAN, has put forth a proposal to the Ministry of Education of Malaysia to embed SDGs in
Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) II especially to take into account Social Impact component based
on all research activities conducted by universities.

Prof Holzhacker and his fellow authors recently published a book entitled ‘Sustainable Development Goals
in Southeast Asia and ASEAN’. Professor Dr Azirah Hashim, Executive Director of Asia-Europe Institute
and Ms. Aliyyah Nuha Faiqah Azman Firdaus contribute a book chapter on ‘SDGs and Capacity Building
in Higher Education in Malaysia and ASEAN’. The book was published on January 14, 2019.

20. Official Visit and Training Session with Leo Clubs

The R5 EcoCamp organized by Leo Clubs is a 2 Days 1 Night camp which is held in conjunction with
Earth Hour.

Objectives of this camp:

to increase awareness of the environmental issues among the Leos, and
to educate the Leos about the need to take care of mother nature inevitably.

To provide a more wholesome experience to Leos, University of Malaya as an eco-campus have been
chosen to be part of the programme. Two respective UM Living Labs took part in this training program:
UMLL The RIMBA Project & UMLL Zero Waste Campaign (UM ZWC).

It is our sincerest hope that programme such as this one is able to educate the younger generation on
the importance of practicing sustainable and responsible lifestyle and make greater efforts in
contributing to the well-being of our environment.
