1. UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA ECO-CAMPUS SECRETARIAT: AT A GLANCE


















Brief history of UM Eco-Campus Secretariat
O cially setup in October 2018 under the purview of O ce of Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Research and Innovation) and support of O ce of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) UM.
Previously, UM campus initiatives were spearheaded under the banner of the then Sustainability
Science Research Cluster UM with the introduction of UM Living Labs Grant Programme (UMLL GP)
initiated in 2015. Now, all UM Living Labs projects are taken under the responsibility and
coordination of UM Eco-Campus Secretariat since the setup of this Secretariat. Professor Dr. Sumiani
Yuso have been o cially appointed as the Chairperson, UM Eco-Campus Secretariat & UM Living
Labs to lead the coordination of campus sustainability initiatives in UM.

2. Congrats UM! 36th World’s Most Sustainable University &
1st Asia's Most Sustainable University in City-Centre Setup 2018
























University of Malaya bags the 36th World’s Most Sustainable University in Universitas Indonesia
GreenMetric World University Rankings 2018 with overall score at 75% (that shows a 12.2%
improvement as compared to 2017 achievement). This year, total number of participating
institutions have increased by 100 institutions which made up a total of 719 members (a 16.2%
increase from 2017).

UI GreenMetric World University Rankings or in-short UIGM is the rst and the only world university
ranking systems based on voluntary participation to-date that gives emphasis on campus
sustainability performance. The ranking system analyze and rank universities performance in six
categories: (1) Setting and Infrastructure (15%), (2) Energy and Climate Change (21%), (3)
Waste Management (18%), (4) Water Management (10%), (5) Transportation Management
(18%), (6) Education and Research (18%).

In Malaysia, UM was joined by 17 other higher education institutions: UPM, UTM, UMS, UUM, UMP,
UTAR, UTeM, UKM, USM, Department of Mersing Polytechnic, and UPSI. UM ranked as the 2nd
Malaysian Most Sustainable University with signi cant improvements for most categories.

UM rose excellently with 3 signi cant achievements as follows:
• Best Water Management in Malaysia (95%)
• Best Education & Research (Sustainability) in Malaysia (87.5%), and
• Best Waste Management in Malaysia (79.2%)

With this year achievement, UM is also ranked:
• 4th Asia’s Most Sustainable University
• In City-Centre Category: UM maintained the position as the 1st Most Sustainable University
in Asia & 6th in the World out of 113 institutions.

At individual categories, UM managed to be listed out of 719 universities as:
• 11th World’s Best Water Management
• 28th World’s Best Education & Research (Sustainability)

UM achievements are made possible through collective contributions with the aspiration of ‘Smart -
Partnership’ by UM Living Labs Grant Programme, Department of Development & Estate
Maintenance (JPPHB) and various key-stakeholders across institutes, faculties and centers.
UM participation in UIGM 2018 was coordinated under the leadership of Professor Dr. Faisal Ra q
Mahamd Adikan (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development) and Professor Dr. Sumiani Yuso
(Chairperson, UM Eco-Campus Secretariat & UM Living Labs) with active support of UM Eco-Campus
Standing Committee (UMECS); key-persons and student volunteers with di erent backgrounds and
expertise working together toward a common goal.

3. FOREST PRESCHOOL PROJECT IN UM CAMPUS















Forest Preschool team co-led by Ms. Goh Seng Hui and Ms. Chloe Kor visited UM Eco-Campus o ce
to collaborate in the idea of setting up a Forest Preschool within the vicinity of UM main campus.
This project would be the rst Forest Preschool setup in Kuala Lumpur with the concept of learning
in the great outdoors where children have the freedom to explore and be exposed to the natural
wonders of mother earth. Ideally, forest preschool will conduct classes within parks, gardens, elds
and hills in UM campus which is aligned with our mutual goal of building a sustainable community in
a long-run.

The meeting was attended by Forest Preschool team, UM Eco-Campus & three representative of
pioneer UM Living Labs (Mr. Tan Kai Ren - The RIMBA Project, Mr. A an Nasaruddin – Water
Warriors, and Ms. Mairuzasmara Fariza Azlan – UM Zero Waste Campaign). Another follow-up
meeting was called on 31st January 2019 (Thursday) to discuss on Terms of Reference (ToR) on the
collaboration.

4. GREEN ROOF PROJECTS WITH BELALANG INOVASI











































Belalang Inovasi introduce a low maintenance, lightweight, versatile and a ordable green roo ng
solution. The GAIAMAT ™ system has been implemented widely in Singapore and have recently been
brought into Thailand and Malaysia. Their immediate goal is to make green roofs more widely
available and accessible to all by gearing-up Malaysian society and industries toward a greener
future, which entails absorbing global technical knowhow and innovating based on in-practice
systems to tackle negative anthropogenic impact on our environment.

An initial meeting between UM Eco-Campus and Belalang Inovasi was held to discuss about green
initiatives and exploring potential areas on green roof project for collaboration. The meeting was
attended by Mr. Quiwan Dong (Belalang Inovasi founder) and UM Eco-Campus team.

5. SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE DISCUSSION WITH KUMPULAN ASNAF

Part of our long-term contribution to community can be achieved through SDG17: Partnership for
the Goals. On 10 January 2019, Mr. Mokhtar (a representative of ASNAF Group and Mosque
Management Division, Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah) paid a visit to UM Eco-Campus O ce. The
meeting aims at exploring areas for collaboration between UM Eco-Campus to provide expertise and
advice to ASNAF Group: knowledge transfer, capacity building and training, and projects monitoring
to uplift their welfare and economic status.

Potential areas for collaboration (advisory and consultation):
• Integrated Waste Management
• Eco-Surau / Mosque
• Water Conservation
• Community Garden

Date : 8 January 2019 (Tuesday)
Time : 10 am – 12 pm

These are 8 groups of zakat bene ciaries whom we called Asnaf:
1) Fakir: One who has neither material possession nor means of livelihood; one who su ers, and
has no means to sustain his/her daily needs.
2) Miskin: One who has insu cient means of livelihood to meet his/her basic needs.
3) Amil: One who is appointed to collect Zakat and the expenses incurred in the administration of
Zakat.
4) Muallaf: One who recently embraced Islam.
5) Riqab: One who is freeing himself/herself from the bondage or shackles of slavery.
6) Gharimin: One who is in debt and needs assistance to meet his/her basic needs.
7) Fisabilillah: One who strives in the cause of Allah for the betterment of the community.
8) Ibnussabil: Stranded travellers on a permissible journey.



6. UM LIVING LABS SITE-VISIT MONITORING SESSIONS 2019
These site-visit monitoring sessions were conducted as part of the continuous evaluation of all UM
Living Labs Grant Programmes (UMLL GP) 2018/2019. A total of 19 UM Living Labs Programmes were

ON WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVES














Air Selangor is a water company committed to providing excellent water supply services to
consumers. These are several on-going initiatives as part of their corporate social
responsibility by Air Selangor:

A meeting was called by Datin Associate Professor Dr. Sa ah @ Yusmah Muhammad Yuso ,

Conservation Unit, Air Selangor. The meeting aims to explore potential areas for collaboration

9. WATER WARRIORS: RIVER CLEANUP & WATER MONITORING PROGRAM 2019 AT
SUNGAI PANTAI, UM (RIVER OF LIFE PUBLIC OUTREACH PROGRAM) PHASE 5

























































Water Warriors UM: River Clean Up in support of River of Life Public Outreach Program
(ROLPOP) Phase 5. Sungai Pantai that ows within the UM campus eventually connects to Sungai
Klang near Mid Valley Megamall. For a start, the UM community is trying to contribute whatever we

can from our campus backyard. Kudos to all the volunteers, including our alumni and members of
the general public.

We are humbled to be part of a growing network of community-based river conservation e ort in
Lembah Klang. At the same day and time, a similar initiative is being carried out by the Friends of the
Langat River @ Alur Ilmu, UKM

UM Eco-Campus & UM Living Labs Innovation: Product & Service

HIGHLIGHT 1
UM Zero Waste Campaign: Organic Compost

This is part of UM Eco-Campus through UM Zero Waste Campaign (UM ZWC) commitment to
highlight the importance of reducing our carbon footprint by practicing waste separation-at-source
(SAS) and recycling.

Organic waste can be converted into organic fertilizer (compost) and biogas. UM ZWC has
generated almost RM20,000 of compost sale to-date.

It is our hope that UM Community and general public will use our in-house organic compost by UM
ZWC for your plants be it at your o ce or your home-garden, which is sold at a very-reasonable
price of RM5/kilogram.

Imarah Green Project: Lestari Shop
Lestari Shop, central point for campus community and general public to donate clothes and

reusable items located at Block B, Level 2, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya
(APIUM).

Lestari Shop is one of the eco-campus initiatives under the banner of UM Living Labs Grant
Programme. Lestari Shop aims to encourage campus community and public to make donations and
to instil awareness on the importance of sustainable lifestyle through 3R Practices (Reduce, Reuse
and Recycle).

Lestari Shop is a one-stop-centre that provide charity sale with green market concept by
channelling donations to respective institutions or individuals in-need. This initiative is part of Eco-
Surau and Imarah Green Project continuous contribution to UI GreenMetric World University
Rankings by realizing the aspirations of UM Eco-Campus Blueprint. Similar to UM Intelligent Recycle
Centre, Lestari Shop also provides point reward system that gives donators and buyers to collect
points that is redeemable (please refer poster for details)
