ProSPER.Net, founded in June 2008 is an alliance of leading universities in the Asia-

'Sustainability Science' is recognised as a rapidly developing trans-disciplinary, cross-faculty framework for
studying multi-dimensional issues that interacts science and non-science elements including biodiversity,
environment, socio-economic and technological concerns, with a time perspective beyond the present gener-
ation.
It is a particular and promising framework for concerted efforts of disciplines, representing different scien-
tific cultures, having different time perspectives and differing also with respect to relative weight of basic
versus applied and policy relevant research.

Grand Challenge 2014 for Sustainability Science Research Cluster UM
This Grand Challenge focuses on current and future challenges of Greater Kuala Lumpur in facing
urbanization, degradation of environmental quality, limited resources, community integration and
infrastructure development.

UM CARES: THE COMMUNITY & SUSTAINABILITY CENTRE
UMCARES was inspired by a call by ex-Vice Chancellor, Datuk Rafiah Salim
for volunteers to green the University of Malaya in 2008. The motley crew
of academic staff and student volunteers decided to call themselves ‘UM
CARES’ and thus began the first campus-wide environmental organisation.
UMCARES is a people-driven, bottom-up initiative that uses the strength of the grassroots to drive the univer-
sity to sustainability.

SOLUTIONS NETWORK (UM SDSN) UNIT
SDSN Malaysia Chapter was launched on October 10th, 2012 where
University of Malaya became one of its first two members. University of Malaya Sustainable Development
Solutions Network (UM SDSN) is envisaged to become a recognized sustainability referral centre in multi-,
inter- and trans-disciplinary approach.
The rationale of its establishment is to address the issues of social, environmental, economic, and govern-
ance dimensions as highlighted by the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, UM SDSN works towards bridging
people from various sectors and backgrounds to promote innovative solutions to some of Malaysia’s most
challenging hurdles.
