The Corrimal Town Plan was released recently from the Corrimal Chamber of Commerce in
conjunction with Wollongong City Council. The town plan is a culmination of studies, reviews
and town meetings to devise a method through which the area can improve. The plan includes
developments, such as the Verge, which offers modern living with retail, improved cafe strips and
renewed parklands and fitness facilities. It aims to promote markets and outdoor art spaces allowing
for a diversified culture of modernity.
Currently, the annual Spring into Corrimal festival brings over 55,000 people to the streets and parks
of Corrimal. With a powerful move towards this direction, Corrimal is on the Verge of an enormous
transformation.

CORRIMAL'S HISTORY

The Aboriginal connection to the Illawarra
has a history which began thousands of years
before European colonisation. Corrimal is
named after 'Kurumul' who was an Aboriginal
warrior.
The Corrimal Colliery was opened in 1883. A
private colliery line was constructed along
with Tarrawanna Road, connecting with the
Corrimal Coke Works. The 'Green Frog' in
Memorial Park(pictured below) is a reminder
of the area's coal mining history.
Streets Ice Cream Company originated in
Corrimal In Australia's Post-Depression era as
an addition to a local milk bar. Owner, Edwin
Street, built an ice works factory on the corner
of the Princes Highway and Tarrawanna Road
complete with Neon signage and a polar bear.
Since then, Corrimal has grown to be
a neighbourhood region to the west of
Wollongong. With the rapid expansion of
Wollongong, and rising housing prices of
the Northern Illawarra, many people want a
