2026 Interscholastic Unified SportsBocce State ChampionshipPARTNERSHIP WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS PENNSYLVANIA AND PIAAPlay with Special OlympicsInterscholastic Unified Sports is a fully inclusive high school program with teams comprised of a proportional number of students with and without intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. These student athletes train and compete together as equal peers, and proudly represent their school like other varsity teams. There were 490 Unified bocce teams from 325 high schools that played throughout the winter season in 926 competition matches. Teams advanced through league playoffs and regional championships to get to the state championship. There are eight teams which have emerged for the opportunity to win the 2026 State Championship! Last year’s state champion was Blackhawk High School from Beaver County. Special Olympics Pennsylvania proudly partners with more than 570 schools in 63 counties throughout the state through the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) program. Additionally, Special Olympics Pennsylvania is grateful for its valued parternships with the PIAA and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Special Education.WHAT IS BOCCE?You may know it as an Italian game, but internationally it is a very popular sport for Special Olympics. This is because of its ability to accommodate a wide range of athletes and skill levels. At the high school level, the bocce teams consist of 6-8 players with two alternates. Four team members are positioned on two sides of a 60 foot long court and compete against another team. In each frame a small yellow ball, called the pallina, is rolled out. Each member of a team must then toss a red or green ball and attempt to get their ball as close to the pallina as possible. Each team has four balls to roll. Points are awarded in each frame to one team. One point is given for each ball of the same color closer to the pallina than any of the opposing team’s bocce balls. The team members at the opposite end then begin a new frame. The game is complete when a team scores 16 points or the designated time frame of 30 minutes elapses.
