The Longer Road to Hershey

by Tom Elling - PA Wrestling Historian

Remember that exciting vacation trip you planned and just about anything you did seemed to go wrong? You may even have
had to postpone or cancel said trip.

Well, this wrestling season and the subsequent trip to the Giant Center in 2021 is that trip times ten!

A few of you will be here (thankfully) to watch your son or daughter compete for the coveted medals. Unfortunately, the vast
majority who have made the annual trek religiously will be absent. That is sad and unfortunate.

For health concerns and state regulations, the PIAA was forced to reduce not only the number of fans and qualifiers here but
also the number of staff. Many familiar faces will not grace the stands or tables. There will be small lines waiting to enter the
arena. The crowded hallways and the many merchants in those hallways will not materialize.

As we rejoiced last season getting our PIAA State Tournament in just a week ahead of the Statewide shutdown, we thought
that the effects would last maybe a couple weeks? A month tops? We were so wrong. The best laid plans of mice and men...
and all of that.

But here I sit with those few who were permitted to attend at the hallowed Giant Center- our yearly-planned destination,
thankful that this year’s tournament could go on.

For all concerned (wrestlers, coaches and fans), the trip to get here was not as seamless as we had hoped. The road was a
long and treacherous one with many potholes, bumps, detours, and road-closed signs. Some of us ran out of gas and some
needed to get our batteries recharged.

Many of us had doubts we'd ever arrive today. Some wanted to just go back home and forget this year's trip as an abject
failure: The 'We-Can-Go-Next-Year' line of thinking. Fortunately, we had those among us who refused to give up.

An extra week of qualifiers (Super Regionals) had to be instituted to make this road to glory possible. But as much as we didn't
have the enjoyable trip as we had hoped, we endured. As in any successful wrestling competition, it was a team effort. PIAA
leadership had to make some difficult (and often not-popular) decisions. From the very top of the structure to each and every
District and wrestling high school, those in charge forged on. The proverbial 'flat tire' may have slowed the process. Covid
was not an easy adversary with which to wrestle. Often times, it looked like we were doomed.

Cancellations and modifications were like the wrestler whose best moves had been thwarted and the bout went into
overtime. What made the trip even most difficult was that in so many cases we didn't have room for everybody. Covid
restrictions prevented so many parents from the ride. Even this weekend that has been such a traditional resort and reward
marking the culmination of 'the journey,' there are so many who are not here.

Streaming video and audio were available in some areas as local media was able to secure sponsors to provide video and/or
audio connections to the meets. Flo Wrestling provided a PPV opportunity starting last weekend at the East and West Super
Regionals.

While the road was not easy, (it never is when you have to build new pathways), innovators looked outside the GPS lines and
provided at least some direction for the greatest wrestling state to find a way.
Let's all be thankful that we have had a semblance of a wrestling season and that we are able to hold a PIAA State Wrestling
Championship. Some states are not as fortunate.

To quote a trite expression: 'When the going gets tough, the tough get going.' So let the wrestling of the toughest begin and
let's all applaud those who survived the journey.

Let's wrestle and remember “Keep your face always toward the sunshine—and shadows will fall behind you.” Walt Whitman

1956 PIAA State Champions – (front row, left to right) Maynard Aungston, Ron Myers, Larry Lauchle, Dan Johnston and
Ralph Littleberry. (back row, left to right) John Barclay, Ralph Clark, Veryl Long, Russ Triponey, Art Baker and Ron
Maltoney.

The tournament referees for 1956 were Gail Phillips from Forty Fort and Michael Babyak from Pittsburgh.

At 95, Lock Haven sophomore Maynard Aungst pounded Trinity's James Grimes in the championship bout, 10-2. In the

semi-finals, Aungst defeated Upper Darby’s Ron Fordham, 12-7, and Grimes dumped Northampton’s Joe Recker, 6-2.

Junior Ron Myers from Philipsburg-Osceola claimed the 103-pound title when he pinned Manheim Central's Rodney

Gibble in 1:14 in the finals. Myers decisioned Latrobe's Richard Martin in one semi-final bout, 13-6, while Gibble gained a measure

of revenge when he defeated returning state runner-up Dick Baker from Allentown, 2-2, referee's decision, in the other semi-final

bout. Baker defeated Gibble in the 1955 semi-finals at 95 pounds, 2-0.

Muncy junior Larry Lauchle won the 112-pound title with a hard-fought 1-1, referee's decision over Hershey's Cleon Cassel

in the championship finals. In the semi-finals, Lauchle dumped Waynesburg’s Paul Duffielt, 6-2, while Cassel topped Commodore

Perry’s Ron Conn, 5-2. It marked the second straight year that Cassel lost by referee's decision to the eventual state champion

after losing to Trinity Roland Taggart in1955 in the semi-finals.

At 120, Clearfield senior Dan Johnston became his high school's 29th state champion when he earned a 3-3, referee's

decision over Allentown's Russ Rohrback in the title bout. Johnston defeated York’s Andy Tortorici in one semi-final match, 8-1,

and Rohrback defeated Jefferson-Morgan’s Jim Dollar in the other semi-final, 7-3.

Senior Ralph Littleberry captured the 127-pound championship with a 3-2 decision over Bob Meyers from Northampton in

the state finals. In the semi-finals, Littleberry won a 2-2, referee's decision over Everett senior Jim Calhoun, the same wrestler he

defeated in the 1955 sem-finals, 5-0.

Junior John Barclay from Waynesburg won the 133-pound championship with a 7-5 decision over George Noll from

Bellefonte in the finals. In the semi-finals, Barclay decked Ed Newbold from York in 2:29 while Noll dumped Northampton’s Don

Santo, 9-3.

At 138, Clearfield's Ralph Clark defended his state title won in 1955 with a 6-0 win over South Williamsport's Larry Sinibaldi.

The 1966 tournament might best be characterized as a wide open tournament. A total of 42 high schools accounted for
the 48 wrestlers entered in the tournament for what may have been the greatest geographic parity of wrestlers in state tournament
history.

The 1965-66 season saw the return of two points for every takedown earned by a wrestler in a bout. The referee's uniform
was changed to black pants and black and white striped shirts.

Trinity junior John Abajace was the only returning state champion from 1965, moving up to 120 after winning his title at
103. Three 1965 state runners-up were eligible to challenge for state titles in the 1966 tournament. The 1965 state runners-up
eligible to return were Jack Sullivan from Mt. Lebanon, DuBois’ Henry Shaffer and Larry Marshall from Commodore Perry.

The 1966 championships saw six high schools claim their first individual PIAA state wrestling champion.
The 95-pound class was loaded with outstanding talent and brought about one of the more exciting championship final
bouts. Richard Braymer (20-0), a junior from Saegertown, won the lightweight title by the slimmest of margins over Susquehanna
Township sophomore Chris Black. Trailing 2-0 late in the final period, Braymer pancaked Black to his back for a takedown and two
poin near fall with four seconds remaining in the match to become Saegertown’s first-ever state wrestling champion. In the semi-
finals, Black defeated West Snyder freshman Ken Hess, 10-5, while Braymer defeated Waynesburg sophomore Dale Murdock, 9-
3. Sophomore Art Grinnell (of Commodore Perry won his school's first-ever title with a 3-2 decision on a riding time point
over Trinity junior Ron Junko in the 103-pound title bout.
At 112, Shamokin's Harry Weinhofer returned to the state tournament to capture his school's 11th state title. Weinhofer,
who was pinned in 16 seconds in the 1964 semi-finals, pinned 1964 state champion Sherm Hostler from Newport in 3:18. Weinhofer
won the battle of unbeatens to finish at 26-0 while Hostler finished his season at 24-1.

The lightweight crown went to Chartiers-Houston sophomore Phil Mary (41-3-1), a 11-6 winner over Lancaster McCaskey
senior Fredo Pagan (32-2) in the 98-pound state finals. Mary, the lone sophomore champion, avenged a 6-4 loss to Pagan in the
Manheim Central Tournament finals in December. Mary decked Churchill’s Dave Crisanti (31-4) in 2:53 in the semi-finals while
Pagan outlasted Moon senior Dave Buzza (33-3-1) in the other semi-final, 11-8. Buzza edged Hazleton junior Keith Maurer (31-6)
for the bronze medal, 4-3 while Valley’s Buddy Blaha (26-4) nipped Crisanti, 7-6, to finish in fifth place.

Red Land senior John Worley (30-1) won the 103-pound state title when he defeated previously unbeaten Anthony Russo
from Plymouth Whitemarsh (31-1) in the championship finals, 10-2. Worley scored two takedowns and turned Russo twice en route
to the title. Worley's toughest bout came in the quarter-finals against State College sophomore Scott Pifer (24-5), a 10-9 victory
while in the semi-finals he topped Northampton senior Matt Billy (24-6-1), 9-7. Russo shut out Governor Mifflin senior Ken Yamashita
(33-3) in the other semi-final, 6-0. Yamashita claimed third place when he decked Pifer in 4:18 and Chartiers-Houston junior Jim
Vulcano (35-3-1) dominated Billy in the fifth place consolation bout, 13-3.

At 112, Cedar Cliff senior John Aumiller (31-0) captured the state title with a 4-1 victory over Mark Keller (31-2), a senior
from Conestoga Valley. Aumiller won the title despite undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery four days prior to the start of the
tournament. In the semi-finals, Aumiller defeated Easton senior Tom Morello (33-6), 7-2, while Keller dominated Erie Prep junior
Geroge Ciotti (32-4-2), 8-1, in the other semi-final bout. Morello topped Ciotti, 10-2, to claim the bronze medal while Churchill junior
Rick Travis (28-4) decked Southmoreland senior Tom Skovira (31-7) in 2:27 to finish fifth.

Easton senior Randy Ascani (35-2) recorded a 6-4 victory over Bethlehem Catholic senior Vince Stravino (34-4) in the
119-pound state finals. Ascani broke a 4-4 tie with a double leg takedown with 55 seconds remaining in the bout. The championship
bout marked the third consecutive week the two had met with Ascani winning in the District 11 title and Stravino earning a criteria
decision over the Red Rover in the Northeast Regional finals. Stravino's loss marked the third consecutive year he lost in the PIAA
state finals after placing second in Class AA as a freshman and sophomore while competing for Northwestern Lehigh. Stravino
edged Jersey Shore senior Mike Packer (32-3) in the semi-finals, 4-2 while Ascani defeated Connellsville senior Dean Soberdash

The Class AAA tournament opened with five defending state champions and 51 total state placewinners eligible to return

to the state championships. Seniors Ron1D5oppYeelhaeuresr fArogmoCo–nn2ell0sv0ille6anCdlTarsosy LAetAters from Shaler and juniors Jermaine Jones

from West Chester Henderson, Matt Ciasulli from Easton and State College’s Nate Galloway returned in search of their second

straight state titles. Interestingly, all five successfully defended their titles.

In addition, junior Jeff Breese from McGuffey, the 1999 state champion at 103 pounds, returned from a serious knee injury

sustained during the 1999 soccer season to challenge for his second title.

Six other wrestlers who competed in the 2000 state finals were also looking for gold medals in the 2001 state meet. The

runners-up from 2000 included seniors Chris Lape from West Allegheny, Ryan Handy from Dallastown, Troy Millhouse from

Hempfield (District 3) and Jason Shivak from Spring Ford and sophomores Jeff Ecklof from Northampton and Susquehannock’s

Adam LoPiccolo.

Easton entered the state tournament as the heavy favorite to capture the Class AAA state team title after claiming the

Class AAA Team Dual Meet championship in early-February.

The Red Rovers waltzed to the team title with 97 points, 37 ½ points better than runner-up State College with 62 ½ points.

State College squad finished second in the dual meet championships to Easton as well. Defending state champion Northampton

finished in third place with 57 ½ points followed by Shaler (47) and Blue Mountain (43).

The championship finals started much like they did a year earlier as West Chester Henderson junior Jermaine Jones (36-

0) defended his 103-pound state title, capping an undefeated season with a convincing 12-3 major decision over Chartiers Valley

sophomore Mark McKnight (33-3). McKnight opened the scoring with a scrambling takedown off his shot for a quick 2-0 lead before

Jones escaped and countered a McKnight takedown with a takedown of his own into a tilt for two-nearfall points for a 5-2 lead after

one. Jones released McKnight before picking up a takedown to close the second period scoring. In the third, Jones completed the

scoring with an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall and his second state title. In the semi-finals, Jones topped Easton junior

TRIBUTE TO A MAN WHO LEFT HIS MARK
~CRAIG PHILLIPS~

(1955 – 2021)

As the world has been forced to adjust
to the “new normal” brought about by the
Covid-19 pandemic, millions of individuals
in the United States and abroad have fallen
victim to this unforgiving virus.

Longtime Pennsylvania Wrestling Round-
up Field Reporter Craig Phillips, a valued
member of the wrestling media in the
Keystone State for over 35 years, became
one of those victims, losing his life on Friday,
January 15,, 2021 at the UPMC - Passavant in Pittsburgh.
Craig was a dedicated, highly-proficient wrestling sportswriter and a fixture at almost every District 10, Northwest Regional and
PIAA State Wrestling Championship tournament during his tenure covering wrestling for the Meadville Tribune, the Oil City Derrick,
the Franklin Herald and, of course, the Pensylvania Wrestling Round-up.
For the first time since 1982, the graveled-voiced, “Grizzly-Adams” look-alike Phillips will be missing from his customary seat
at the end of press row covering this year’s state tournament. Round-up readers won’t be able to read his thorough, fact-filled PIAA
Tournament preview in the March issue and will also be denied reading his equally informative, multi-page state tournament recap
with its voluminous facts, figures and analysis in the April issue.
During his writing career, Craig found time to give back to his community, serving as head coach of the Meadville Junior High
wrestling team from 1983 to 1988 before becoming an assistant coach at MAHS under Hall of Fame head coach Dick Lumley from
1988 to 1992.
Craig Phillips received countless awards for his insightful wrestling columns and dual meet and tournament coverage. Most
notably, Craig is the only media individual to receive the Round-up’s “Media Award of Excellence” three times, earning recognition in
1984, 1989 and 2011. In 1990, Craig received the high honor of being named the USA Wrestling’s National Wrestling Sportswriter of
the Year. Also, in 2020, Craig was featured on ESPN radio.
Craig Phillips will be inducted posthumously on Sunday, October 17th into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association
Hall of Fame, Class of 2021, an honor that is richly deserved for a man who left his mark on Pennsylvania high school and college
wrestling.
Craig will be sorely missed as one of the true “giants” of our sport!

23 PIAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2021

March 12, 2021

Welcome All:

On behalf of every member school, student-athlete, administrator, official, and family; a big
THANK YOU! We did it!! We are celebrating our 83rd year of the PIAA Wrestling
Championships and in many cases – much like the movie - Against All Odds.

What a year it has been, but all of us worked together to accomplish something that many did not
think was possible; a complete wrestling season. This weekend we will see that many of our
wrestlers have over 30 bouts. That’s a tremendous accomplishment in a COVID-19 infected year
when many thought the season could be lost. As a matter of fact, it was against conventional
wisdom that we could even have a season.

But, much like the lessons athletics, specifically wrestling, teach all of us; persevere; be persistent;
don’t quit; keep on keeping on, set goals and work to achieve them and guess what? All of us
working together proved it can be done. Kudos to everyone. What a tremendous accomplishment!

What makes all of this more satisfying is in many areas, decisions were made that were arbitrary.
They may have been well intentioned, but they didn’t give athletes, coaches, officials’ and
administrators the chance to try. That’s the thing about athletics and why we play, why we watch
and why we organize – it’s the chance to compete; to have the chance and the opportunity to be
successful.

If it’s all done and decided on paper then why do we only have 13 four-time champions out of tens
of thousands of wrestlers in our 83 year history? You know why, because in wrestling, as in other
sports, it’s not given, its earned. There is no free pass, it’s awarded based upon performance. You
do or you don’t. It’s simple; factual; and final.

In this 83rd PIAA wrestling championship that started in some areas of the state with sectionals,
then districts, regionals and this year a super region; congratulations on a job well done and earned
through the toughest and best interscholastic wrestling tournament in the country.

Our eight finalists have endured, advanced and achieved and it is our distinct honor and pleasure
to be able to say to all of you; you are the best!

Congratulations and thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robert A. Lombardi
Executive Director
