Gibble in 1:14 in the finals. Myers decisioned Latrobe's Richard Martin in one semi-final bout, 13-6, while Gibble gained a measure
of revenge when he defeated returning state runner-up Dick Baker from Allentown, 2-2, referee's decision, in the other semi-final
bout. Baker defeated Gibble in the 1955 semi-finals at 95 pounds, 2-0.
Muncy junior Larry Lauchle won the 112-pound title with a hard-fought 1-1, referee's decision over Hershey's Cleon Cassel
in the championship finals. In the semi-finals, Lauchle dumped Waynesburg’s Paul Duffielt, 6-2, while Cassel topped Commodore
Perry’s Ron Conn, 5-2. It marked the second straight year that Cassel lost by referee's decision to the eventual state champion
after losing to Trinity Roland Taggart in1955 in the semi-finals.
At 120, Clearfield senior Dan Johnston became his high school's 29th state champion when he earned a 3-3, referee's
decision over Allentown's Russ Rohrback in the title bout. Johnston defeated York’s Andy Tortorici in one semi-final match, 8-1,
and Rohrback defeated Jefferson-Morgan’s Jim Dollar in the other semi-final, 7-3.
Senior Ralph Littleberry captured the 127-pound championship with a 3-2 decision over Bob Meyers from Northampton in
the state finals. In the semi-finals, Littleberry won a 2-2, referee's decision over Everett senior Jim Calhoun, the same wrestler he
defeated in the 1955 sem-finals, 5-0.
Junior John Barclay from Waynesburg won the 133-pound championship with a 7-5 decision over George Noll from
Bellefonte in the finals. In the semi-finals, Barclay decked Ed Newbold from York in 2:29 while Noll dumped Northampton’s Don
Santo, 9-3.
At 138, Clearfield's Ralph Clark defended his state title won in 1955 with a 6-0 win over South Williamsport's Larry Sinibaldi.
Clark pinned Burgettstown sophomore Bob Marshall in the semi-finals in 5:36 and Sinibaldi doubled up on Manheim Township’s
Ken LaBone, 8-4.
In the next two bouts, a pair state runners-up from 1955 captured state titles. Trinity senior Veryl Long won the 145-pound
state title with a 6-1 decision over Gino DeLorenzo from Easton in the finals. In the semi-finals, Long topped Hollidaysburg’s Neil

history.
The 1965-66 season saw the return of two points for every takedown earned by a wrestler in a bout. The referee's uniform
was changed to black pants and black and white striped shirts.
Trinity junior John Abajace was the only returning state champion from 1965, moving up to 120 after winning his title at
103. Three 1965 state runners-up were eligible to challenge for state titles in the 1966 tournament. The 1965 state runners-up
eligible to return were Jack Sullivan from Mt. Lebanon, DuBois’ Henry Shaffer and Larry Marshall from Commodore Perry.
The 1966 championships saw six high schools claim their first individual PIAA state wrestling champion.
The 95-pound class was loaded with outstanding talent and brought about one of the more exciting championship final
bouts. Richard Braymer (20-0), a junior from Saegertown, won the lightweight title by the slimmest of margins over Susquehanna
Township sophomore Chris Black. Trailing 2-0 late in the final period, Braymer pancaked Black to his back for a takedown and two
poin near fall with four seconds remaining in the match to become Saegertown’s first-ever state wrestling champion. In the semi-
finals, Black defeated West Snyder freshman Ken Hess, 10-5, while Braymer defeated Waynesburg sophomore Dale Murdock, 9-
3. Sophomore Art Grinnell (of Commodore Perry won his school's first-ever title with a 3-2 decision on a riding time point
over Trinity junior Ron Junko in the 103-pound title bout.
At 112, Shamokin's Harry Weinhofer returned to the state tournament to capture his school's 11th state title. Weinhofer,
who was pinned in 16 seconds in the 1964 semi-finals, pinned 1964 state champion Sherm Hostler from Newport in 3:18. Weinhofer
won the battle of unbeatens to finish at 26-0 while Hostler finished his season at 24-1.

for the bronze medal, 4-3 while Valley’s Buddy Blaha (26-4) nipped Crisanti, 7-6, to finish in fifth place.
Red Land senior John Worley (30-1) won the 103-pound state title when he defeated previously unbeaten Anthony Russo
from Plymouth Whitemarsh (31-1) in the championship finals, 10-2. Worley scored two takedowns and turned Russo twice en route
to the title. Worley's toughest bout came in the quarter-finals against State College sophomore Scott Pifer (24-5), a 10-9 victory
while in the semi-finals he topped Northampton senior Matt Billy (24-6-1), 9-7. Russo shut out Governor Mifflin senior Ken Yamashita

tournament. In the semi-finals, Aumiller defeated Easton senior Tom Morello (33-6), 7-2, while Keller dominated Erie Prep junior
Geroge Ciotti (32-4-2), 8-1, in the other semi-final bout. Morello topped Ciotti, 10-2, to claim the bronze medal while Churchill junior
Rick Travis (28-4) decked Southmoreland senior Tom Skovira (31-7) in 2:27 to finish fifth.
Easton senior Randy Ascani (35-2) recorded a 6-4 victory over Bethlehem Catholic senior Vince Stravino (34-4) in the
119-pound state finals. Ascani broke a 4-4 tie with a double leg takedown with 55 seconds remaining in the bout. The championship
bout marked the third consecutive week the two had met with Ascani winning in the District 11 title and Stravino earning a criteria
decision over the Red Rover in the Northeast Regional finals. Stravino's loss marked the third consecutive year he lost in the PIAA
state finals after placing second in Class AA as a freshman and sophomore while competing for Northwestern Lehigh. Stravino
edged Jersey Shore senior Mike Packer (32-3) in the semi-finals, 4-2 while Ascani defeated Connellsville senior Dean Soberdash

to the state championships. Seniors Ron Doppelheuer from Connellsville and Troy Letters from Shaler and juniors Jermaine Jones
from West Chester Henderson, Matt Ciasulli from Easton and State College’s Nate Galloway returned in search of their second
straight state titles. Interestingly, all five successfully defended their titles.
In addition, junior Jeff Breese from McGuffey, the 1999 state champion at 103 pounds, returned from a serious knee injury
sustained during the 1999 soccer season to challenge for his second title.
Six other wrestlers who competed in the 2000 state finals were also looking for gold medals in the 2001 state meet. The
runners-up from 2000 included seniors Chris Lape from West Allegheny, Ryan Handy from Dallastown, Troy Millhouse from
Hempfield (District 3) and Jason Shivak from Spring Ford and sophomores Jeff Ecklof from Northampton and Susquehannock’s
Adam LoPiccolo.
Easton entered the state tournament as the heavy favorite to capture the Class AAA state team title after claiming the
Class AAA Team Dual Meet championship in early-February.
The Red Rovers waltzed to the team title with 97 points, 37 ½ points better than runner-up State College with 62 ½ points.
State College squad finished second in the dual meet championships to Easton as well. Defending state champion Northampton
finished in third place with 57 ½ points followed by Shaler (47) and Blue Mountain (43).
The championship finals started much like they did a year earlier as West Chester Henderson junior Jermaine Jones (36-
0) defended his 103-pound state title, capping an undefeated season with a convincing 12-3 major decision over Chartiers Valley
sophomore Mark McKnight (33-3). McKnight opened the scoring with a scrambling takedown off his shot for a quick 2-0 lead before
Jones escaped and countered a McKnight takedown with a takedown of his own into a tilt for two-nearfall points for a 5-2 lead after
one. Jones released McKnight before picking up a takedown to close the second period scoring. In the third, Jones completed the
scoring with an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall and his second state title. In the semi-finals, Jones topped Easton junior
Chad Sportelli (45-5), 5-3, and McKnight edged Waynesburg sophomore Drew Headlee (35-6), 4-2. In the consolation finals,
Sportelli topped Headlee for 3rd place, 2-1, Greater Latrobe junior Mike Ciotti (35-8) shut out Philipsburg-Osceola senior Jared Weller
(33-5) in the fifth place bout, 3-0, and West Perry senior Chris Yentzer (33-7) nipped Erie Prep senior Chris Wise for 7th place, 4-3.
The 112-pound championship final bout featured McGuffey junior Jeff Breese (34-2) opposite Belle Vernon senior Aaron
