ULLA
JOHNSON
To walk into Ulla Johnson’s new store is to escape
from New York. Cross the threshold’s weeping pines
and Saipua flower beds, and you’re greeted by a cus-
tom scent and glow-y lighting. The silk-upholstered
walls and plush carpet of the dressing rooms feel like
a refuge. Johnson approaches the design of her col-
lections in much the same way. Observing that soci-
ety has gone through a “collective unbuttoning,” she
said, “There used to be a rigorous sense of work and
leisure, but the lines have blurred. There’s a desire
now, I think, to bring a sense of escape into everyday
life. If I had to say what the vision of our brand is, it’s
that our clothes make women feel free.”

The “street” approach to style and
fashion is oftentimes based upon
individualism, not simply current
fashion trends. Using street style
methods, individuals demonstrate
their multiple, negotiated identities,
in addition to utilizing subcultural
and intersecting styles or trends.
This, in itself, is a performance, as
it creates a space where identities
can be explored through the action
of dress.

A style is a type of product that has
one or more specific features that dis-
tinguishes it and makes different from
other products of the same type, e.g.
a crew neckline is a style and turtle
neck is another style. Within a specific
style, there can be many variations in
trimmings, textures and decorations or
other details, e.g. a sweater is a dis-
tinctive style but individual variations
could include different kinds of nets,
embroideries, pockets or necklines.
