Moving Forward
ANNUAL REPORT 2020 - YWAM MS MOVING FORWARD
4M.1 oving Forward
Preparations to return the ship to PNG have been ongoing, as the vessel requires a 20-year special survey and drydocking
prior to recommencing outreach patrol activities. This is scheduled to be carried out in January to February 2021.
Upon drydock completion, YWAM MS aims to return the ship to PNG waters in February 2021, for further preparations in
Port Moresby to begin rural healthcare support in the third and fourth quarters of the year. The focus of these outreach
patrols is expected to be in Western Province. This will enable a new model of outreach to be established to support
increased efficiency and productivity.
In light of the current pandemic context, operations are expected to focus primarily on maternal and child health (MCH)
patrols and health promotion education. YWAM MS is also eager to assist where appropriate in the COVID-19 response
and continue to strengthen relationships with Western Provincial Health Authority (WPHA) and the Middle Fly District
Health team.
YWAM MS expects to officially open the Vocational Training Campus in Port Moresby in the first half of 2021. Two inaugural
schools are planned to run simultaneously for just over five months beginning in March, and the students are anticipated
to join the ship on outreach in Western Province later in the year. As this satellite campus develops, vocational training
is anticipated to be offered in a range of areas, including healthcare, hospitality, administration, faith and character
development, and media. YWAM MS’ training programs will be unique in that they will combine training in skills with
character development and service opportunities, with the goal of instilling passion within young people to build
healthy communities for a healthy Papua New Guinea.
YWAM MS is also planning to expand its land-based activities in the National Capital District (NCD) through a multi-use
mobile facility, working strategically with NCD and the National Department of Health (NDoH) for the implementation
of healthcare, education, and training services. With over 100 primary and high schools and a growing population in Port
Moresby, this multi-use mobile facility will strengthen existing services and will provide an ideal learning environment
in which health care professionals can develop their skills, while also responding to the needs of the nation. YWAM MS is
working to have this facility in PNG by the beginning of 2022.
NB: The MV YWAM PNG was able to redeploy to Papua New Guinea on 6 February 2021 after undergoing significant
maintenance in Townsville. The dry dock is scheduled to begin in mid-April in Port Moresby, with outreaches resuming in
Western Province upon its completion.
