ISSUE 7 APRIL 2023

Message from our Vicar,

Rev. Fr. Antony Pullukattu (Fr. Tony)

My dear friends,

On this blessed day of Easter, we gather to celebrate the

triumph of life over death, of light over darkness, and of

hope over despair. Today, we rejoice in the resurrection of
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who conquered death and

opened the gates of heaven for all who believe in him.

Easter is a time of renewal and rebirth, a time to reflect on the sacrifice that

Jesus made for us on the cross and to give thanks for the gift of salvation that he

has bestowed upon us. It is a time to remember that through his death and

resurrection, Jesus has given us the ultimate hope and promise of eternal life.

As we celebrate Easter, we are reminded of the power of love and the strength of

faith. It was Jesus' love for us that led him to lay down his life for us, and it is

our faith in him that gives us the courage and strength to carry on in this world,

even in the face of adversity and suffering.

Let us therefore embrace the hope and promise of Easter, and let us renew our
commitment to following in the footsteps of our Lord and

Savior, Jesus Christ. May his love and grace guide us on our journey, and may we

always be mindful of the blessings that he has bestowed upon us.

My dear friends, as we celebrate this joyous occasion, let us give thanks for the

gift of new life that we have been given through Jesus' resurrection, and let us

go forth into the world with hearts full of love and hope, sharing the good news

of salvation with all who will hear.

Happy Easter to all!

REJOICE AND BE GLAD!!

By Sr. Mary Ann

Easter is the most important day of the Christian calendar.
On Easter, we celebrate Jesus' glorious Resurrection and
his triumphant victory over sin and death- the basis for our

faith, as Saint Paul emphatically reminds us in his first

letter to the Corinthians: "And if Christ has not been raised,
your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. Then those who
have fallen asleep in Christ have perished" (1 Corinthians

15:17-18).
Through the solemn observances of Lent, we join our

sorrowful Blessed Mother in accompanying Jesus on the
road to Calvary. Particularly on Holy Thursday and Good

Friday, when we unite ourselves to our Lord's Passion

, contemplating the suffering
Jesus endured for love of us,
we are transformed through

this uniting in order to also
share in Jesus' great

culminating victory over sin
and death. Just as we are

called to share in Our Lord's
Passion and Death, we are

also called to unite ourselves
to His Resurrection during

Easter, for " if we have died
with him, we shall also live

REJOICE AND BE GLAD!!

By Sr. Mary Ann

with him" (2 Timothy 2:11). This greatest of gifts, given to us
lovingly and freely by our Redeemer, has purchased for us

eternal life. We can hope for no greater glory than to gain

the Beatific Vision and live eternally with God, the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the angels and saints in Heaven.
Easter not only is the foundation of our faith, Easter also

invigorates our hope. Hope draws our eyes upward, where God
resides. Saint Paul encourages us: " If then you were raised with

Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right
hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For
you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When
Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in

glory" (Colossians 3:1-4).
The Church celebrates the Easter season for a longer period.

"Eastertide" extends to 50 days, and commemorates the 40
days Our Lord spent on earth after His Resurrection to the

time of His Ascension into Heaven, as well as the 10 days
from the Ascension to the coming of the Holy Spirit at

Pentecost.
On Easter Sunday, let us all join with the chorus of the

faithful as we proclaim,
"Yes, rejoice and be glad for Christ is truly Risen!

Alleluia!"
Sister Mary Ann Marshall, LSIC

HOLY WEEK TRADITIONS

By Kunjamma Francis

Holy Week celebrations start in Syro Malabar tradition, from Palm

Sunday, which includes special prayers and the blessing of Palm Leaves

following which the leaves are handed out to members of the parish (very

similar to Latin tradition). The history of Christianity in Kerala dates back

to when Saint Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, established the

Syro-Malabar Church. The Holy Week is observed during the last week of

Lent, where Christians spend time in intense prayer and abstain from

consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol. Maundy (Holy) Thursday

commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus. Church service is conducted in

the evening, followed by familial celebrations. The feast of Maundy
Thursday sees the

preparation of several

items that are specific

to Syro-Malabar fare.

Tradition mandates

that the whole house

be cleaned before

preparations begin.

Some of the items

prepared include:

Pesaha Appam or Kurishappam (unleavened bread). This dish is only

prepared on Maundy Thursday. The dish is made with a paste of rice and

urad dal, flavored with additions like cumin seeds, shallots, salt, and

grated coconut. Unlike regular appam batter, the Kurishappam batter is

not subject to fermentation; it is cooked in a steamer soon after it is

PAGE 10 EASTER EDITION | ISSUE 7

ISSUE 7 APRIL 2023

mixed. Before the batter is lowered into the steamer, it is garnished with

two segments of blessed palm leaf that are arranged in the shape of a

cross. This dish is considered holy.

Pesaha Paal: a beverage made by boiling coconut milk with jaggery, cumin

seeds, cardamom, dried ginger powder, and salt. A cross fashioned out of

palm leaves is added to the mixture before it is boiled to bless the

beverage. After the dishes are prepared, the oldest person in the family

cuts the Pesaha Appam after saying a short prayer, following which

members of the family are served a

piece of the dish with a glass of Pesaha

Pal from the oldest to the youngest.

This commemorates the establishment

of the Holy Sacrament, the body and

blood of Jesus Christ. Family read

Passion of Christ. Other preparations

are consumed after this ceremony,

often accompanied with bananas. This

practice may also apply to a

community, where members may opt to

congregate in one house for the

ceremony. Kurishappam and Pesaha

Pal are never to be disposed of in the

trash; they may be stored for the next day or destroyed via incineration.

Good Friday sees most Christians gather in churches for special prayers

and observing the way of the cross. This is a day of fasting, with Syrian

Christians opting to break the fast with lunch rather than dinner. The lunch

consists of simple vegetarian dishes, namely kanji (rice porridge),

vanpayar thoran (parboiled red cowpeas stir-fried with grated coconut and

spices), papad, and pickle. The meal is ideally served in a manchatti

PAGE 11 EASTER EDITION | ISSUE 7

ISSUE 7 APRIL 2023

(earthen bowl). Holy Saturday is celebrated at church with new fire and

blessing of the holy water (called Puthen vellam and puthen theyu). Easter

celebrations start after the Easter Vigil Mass, which is held on Saturday

night or in the early morning of Easter Sunday, and is the remembrance of

the resurrection of our lord after 3 days of His death on the cross. The

celebration of Easter is after 50 days of lent and abstinence, and the fare

served during this day features these

items extensively. The beauty is, we

Syromalabar Christian’s continue to

celebrate the tradition without

changes, no matter what part of the

world we live in. 50 years ago, when I

came to US, there was no Syromalabar

chruch or no guidance of Syromalabar,

so we did 40 days of lent. Ash

Wednesday followed the Latin

tradition . Still made pesaha appam

and pal, and chruch celebrations of

the Holy Week were almost the same

as Syromalabar . Children still come

for Pesaha Appam Murikal (in their

40’s) as old days . Tradition continues.

PRAYER, FASTING, AND WHAT…?

By Lindsae Sunny

Most individuals when they think of Lent, the first thing that comes to
mind or the first thing they might ask is, “what are you giving up for
Lent?”. However, Lent is not just about “giving up something”, but rather
taking up practices that bring us closer to God, our Father. Fasting is a
way to orient ourselves closer to God and rid us of our attachment to
earthly things. Through prayer, we deepen our faith and trust in God,
recommitting ourselves to the Father, just like Jesus. But what about

almsgiving? What is it? And why is it so important? According to the
Catechism of the Catholic Church, almsgiving is a “witness to fraternal
charity” and a “work of justice pleasing to God” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, no. 2462). In a world
where people love things and
use others, we are called to
act differently. We are called
to love people and use things.
Lent allows us to practice a
culture of giving, like Christ
gave, and by giving we are
indeed loving as He did. Now
some of us, especially our
youngest readers may not have the means to donate financially during
Lent, but there are other ways that we can be a “witness to fraternal
charity”. How about donating clothes or items you have not worn or used

in over a year? Or letting someone cut you in line? Or doing a random act
of kindness at home? Or doing a chore you do not like to do, without
being asked to do it? Or treating someone who may not deserve it with
kindness? All the three disciplines of Lent are impossible without God’s
grace. Let us continue to ask for God’s grace not just during the Lenten
season, but afterwards to help us continue growing in faith, hope, and
love. With God’s graces, these practices become signs that we are
becoming as we are meant to be.

God bless you all!

Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph, pray for us.

On March 18th and 19th, the Youth of Somerset joined together in their

annual Lenten Retreat. Led by the young adults, the youth were able to

connect through stories about faith, tribulations, family, and more from
role models in their community. In addition to the discussions held,

highschoolers were able to form small groups and talk one-on-one with

their faith leaders. There were also opportunities to participate in
adoration and confession after an overview of the examination of

conscience and reflections upon their faith journeys.

Movie Night:

On March 4th, the Knights of Columbus organized a movie night for the

powerful witness of authentic Christian charity, and a guidepost for all
who seek hope in our turbulent times. This was a very special
documentary on the life and works of Mother Teresa, and there was a
sense of family and joy at this movie night. It was a very enjoyable night

Raising Hope

“Recently, the Raising Hope Team made their way to

the Caring Ministry, an organization that looks after a

number of young children. Many had a powerful
experience, reminding them during the Christmas

season to give back to the community and to do good
in the name of Christ. One of the students that went

wanted to share her experience. Her testimony is

below.
For me, the experience at the Caring Ministry was eye

opening as I was able to see little children who were so
loving and full of joy and ready to welcome us. After

playing with them and giving them gifts, none of us

wanted to leave. It was a reminder of what is
important in this life, which is to love the people

around you. After the caring ministry, we got to serve

lunch for the homeless. This was an incredible
reminder of the blessing that it is to have food and

drink and how we can never take that for granted. It

was also a testament to the blessing that the ability to
serve others is. While Raising Hope often assist

financially, this opportunity helped us realize who we
were serving.
