Message from our Vicar,
Rev. Fr. Antony Pullukattu (Fr. Tony)
Did you know that we are experiencing three
digits temperature in Somerset, NJ?
Still our newsletter team is making all their
efforts to make another beautiful edition of Faith
Connections.
Yes, it is time to thank God for another blessed year of Faith Formation
with so much of in-person activities through COVID-19 restrictions –
Everyday Mass, CCD Classes, 5K, Syro Soccer, Graduations, VBS, Parish
Feast, Badminton, Basketball, and Steubenville Conference…
Surely, we are learning to be in His plan, trusting, surrendering and
celebrating God’s Love.
A big congratulation and thanks to all who contributed and worked hard
to make this newsletter a reality.
My prayers and wishes to all to have an enjoyable summer.
Tony Achan

Tony Achan's
Jubilee Projects
On June 5, 2022 our beloved Tony Achan
celebrated his Jubilee year in Priesthood.
Many people from our Adults, Youth, and
children came to speak on his behalf. It was a
lively event with lots of jokes and tidbits of
appreciation from all across our parish and
beyond. In honor of the Jubilee celebration,
two charity projects were started under Tony
Achan’s name. These would be “Color a
Dream” by Chaganassery Diocese that
supports hard working students that seek
higher education but are not in the financial
needs to support it. Another project that was
begun was the support the Seminarians at
the Chicago Diocese.
If you would like to donate to any of these
causes please contribute via billplay or via
online! Thank you!

October
October 1st: Feast of St.Therese of child Jesus
Catholics around the world honor the life of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, or
St. Thérèse of Lisieux on her feast day. She devoted herself to living a life of
holiness, doing all things with love and childlike trust in God. She struggled

especially those she didn’t like. She performed little acts of charity always,
and little sacrifices not caring how unimportant they seemed.

October 4, 1226.

October 17th: Feast of Ignatius of Antioch
Ignatius is well known for the seven letters he wrote on the long journey from
Antioch to Rome. Ignatius’ great concern was for the unity and order of the
Church. Even greater was his willingness to suffer martyrdom rather than

God which strengthened him. He knew the price of commitment and would not
deny Christ, even to save his own life.

MAHATMA GANDHI
By Aaron Stephen, Grade 6
Gandhi's Youth
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October
2nd, 1869 in a Hindu family in coastal Gujarat. Gandhi
was the last child of his father’s fourth wife. His father
did not have much of a formal education. Gandhi’s
mother, Putlibai, who did not care much for finery or
jewelry, spent most of her time divided at home and
the temple. Mohandas grew up in a home that followed
Vaishnavism, the worship of the Hindu god Vishnu. The
educational places at Porbandar were basic; in the
primary school that Mohandas attended, the children
wrote the alphabet on the floor’s dust with their
hands. One of the concluding reports said about him
was “good at English, okay in Math and weak in
Geography; behavior very good, bad handwriting.”
Gandhi took his studies seriously.
Gandhi's Goal
Gandhi wanted independence for India from British Rule. But he didn’t want to do it
with violence. Gandhi hated fascism (a political system led by a dictator in which
the government controls business and labor and opposition is not allowed), but he
also hated war. His greatest disappointment of his life was that Indian freedom was
realized without Indian unity. Gandhi was blamed by followers of both Hindus and
Muslims for the separation. When persuasion for Indian freedom failed, he went on a
fast. He won two great triumphs because of his fasting. In September 1947, his
fasting stopped the rioting occurring in Calcutta, and in January 1948 he humiliated
the city of Delhi into a shared truce. Later, on January 30, when he was on his way to
his prayer meeting in Delhi, he was shot down by Nathuram Godse, a young Hindu
zealot (a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an
extreme religious or political cause). The British attitude toward Gandhi was one of
mixed admiration, amusement, uneasiness, suspiciousness, and dislike.
Gandhi fought peacefully for Indian independence. His photo is imprinted on Indian
currency. Many statues were built in honor of him. He helped India win freedom. He
is a role model for us. We should not do things with violence. We should succeed in
our goals with peace, just as Gandhi did.

CCD Class of 2022!
The Graduating CCD Class of 2022 consists of more than fifteen intelligent,
talented, hard-working, and kind students who come from various parts of
North, Central, and Southern New Jersey. Most of the students have been in the
Faith Formation Program since Kindergarten and they have maintained strong
relationships and friendships with each other throughout the years. They have
excelled in the areas of academics and extracurricular activities, and have even
had to adapt to changes not just in how they learn in school, but during CCD
classes as well; from being virtual, to split into different groups, and then
forming one large group for classes.

CCD Class of 2022!
Continued...
Every year, the 12th grade class completes a senior class service project.
Previous years have seen partnerships with the our church’s Green Army to
help track food waste, as well as projects to beautify the Fellowship Hall with
artwork. This year, the 12th grade class worked together to fundraise for the
Steubenville Conference, as well as update websites for several pious
organizations within our church. The 12th graders had a stall at Thirunaal on
July 3rd where they sold ice cream, cotton candy, face painting, and even
chances to pie youth, young adults, and Tony Achan in the face. They raised a
total of $800 with the gracious support of all our parish members. Students
also worked together in small groups to update websites for the several
ministries within our church. Through the process, they learned more about
the functions of organizations and established connections with its leaders. A
few examples of the websites can be found below:

It has been an ultimate blessing from God, an absolute pleasure, and a true joy
of mine to be a small part of your Faith Formation journey. Thank you for all
your hard work and effort with the class project, your participation in class
discussions, and in assisting our parish in various ways throughout the years.
Graduates, in one way or another, our church has been part of your home
environment. As you take these next few steps on a new journey in life, you

will face situations that will make you question your faith, question your
identity, and question your purpose in life. Never forget that you have a home
here in Somerset, no matter how broken or messy it is.
The prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah Chapter 29, Verse 11 says “For I know the
plans I have in mind for you- oracle of the Lord- plans for your welfare and not
for woe, so as to give you a future of hope”. St. John Paul II echoes the same
sentiment when he says “do not be afraid to open up the doors of your heart
to Christ”. Graduates Be FEARLESS in your pursuit of Christ and the Kingdom
of Heaven; not just with the job, degree or lifestyle you want for yourself or
your family. Holiness and success are NOT mutually exclusive. Christ wants
us to be HOLY AND SUCCESSFUL. In Matthew Chapter 7, Verses 9-11 we read
“Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of
bread… if you then, who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those
who ask Him”. He gives anything to those who ask Him. No matter where you
find yourselves on the journey, never lose hope and pray always.
Fellow parishioners, let us not forget to keep our graduates in our prayers as
they embark on a new journey in their lives.

Steubenville 2022
Many members of our Youth made the wonderful decision to attend
Steubenville this year. Here are some testimonies we collected from our CCD
students that went and had a beneficial experience.
"I enjoyed the small group sessions and the Sunday mass was amazing"
- Sandra Matthew
"Steubenville was a pretty fun and interesting conference where I met a lot
of new people and was able to bond with God. I got to hang out with my
friends, and at the same time, learn more about Christianity. The time where
they bought the eucharist around the church, was really touching, and I truly
felt the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. I met many other youth from
different churches including other Syro-Malabar youth from other parishes"
- Johan Justin
“I loved the live band and the adoration was very good. The small group
discussions were emotionally relieving and I liked dorming with my friends.
The bus ride was also very fun especially when we were playing Hindi music”
-Anna
“I had an amazing time at Steubenville. Going in I wasn't sure what to expect,
but I tried to be open like our chaperones told us to be. At Steubenville, I had
a really great time with my friends and I feel like the Adoration was really
helpful for my spiritual life. The sessions and the speakers were also funny
and relatable. Also, all the people from the other churches were really nice
whenever they interacted with us.”

On June 18, 2022 our church participated in the syro soccer tournament. Our
church along with many other syro churches in the country all came together
for some friendly competition! Not only was it a big deal for our church team
but we also had many volunteers from our youth and young adults for bringing
this together! Overall it was a fun filled event for everyone and we cannot wait
to see it happen again next year!

congratulations to our new
altar servers!
During May, the last of the previous year’s batch of fifth-
grade students finally became altar-servers. Many of the new
altar-servers would come and serve during weekday Masses in
order to get ready to serve for Sunday Masses. On our church’s
Perunnal day, Achan desired that all installed altar-servers
should get to serve for that Mass, which was special because
it was the 1950th feast day of St. Thomas, and the bishop-
elect - Mar Joy Alapatt - was there to celebrate the Mass for
us. The combination of both the most senior and the littlest
altar-servers leading the procession both in and out of church
made it a beautiful sight. Children should continue altar-
serving and the best way for them to practice is to come
during weekday Masses, especially in the summer.

raising hope
During the past few months, Raising Hope has provided
food to the Helping Hands Soup Kitchen, hosted their
annual barbeque, and fundraised at the Syro Soccer
Tournament. In April of 2022, some Raising Hope
members went to the Helping Hands Soup Kitchen in the
Bronx in order to help serve and pack food for the
needy. In May of 2022, Raising Hope hosted their annual
barbeque, and all the proceeds went to the Helping
Hands Food Drive, the Missionaries of Charity in Asbury,
and the nursing students in Lissieux Sadanam. Finally,
during the Syro Soccer Tournament in June, they sold
snacks and beverages to raise funds for charities.

Green
Army
The green army is a charitable group in our church. The purpose of green army
is to support God’s creations in different ways. The initial aim of the Green
Army group was to make use of food wastage from the Sunday lunch program.
Green army creates composite from biodegradable food waste and uses it for
organic gardens. This encourages parishioners to create organic gardens at
their own homes, and make compost. Green army sells vegetables, seeds, and
also compost for parishioners. This year we had very limited supply of compost
due to Covid lockdowns. The fund raised from green army has been used for
the hunger hunt program organized by Fr Chiramel. Almost 100 food shelves
have been installed in different cities of Kerala by using our green army funds.
This year’s seedling collection has been handed over to Arunachal Pradesh
Bishop for charity programs. Green army organic garden has a variety of
vegetables. More than 100 parishioners are part of this green army group. Their
goal is to protect and care for God’s creations.
