Residential Update…

Sexual Trauma

I would like to say well done to Emma, Registered Manager and the team/young people at Columbus House for achieving ‘Improved
Effectiveness’ on their Ofsted ‘Good’ rating.

Well done to Carla and Bernie, Registered Managers and their teams/young people at Lincoln House and Austen House for achieving
‘Sustained Effectiveness’ on their Ofsted ‘Good’ ratings.

Also, a massive thank you to all the support provided to Lincoln House from everyone at Care 4 Children during
a time of significant change. Carla will continue to manage Lincoln House after her transfer from Nightingale House
and is excited to welcome the challenge of working in our HSB service.

Last but not least, thank you to all the managers and staff for maintaining excellent standards of care in the Sexual
Trauma division and to the young people for making our work worthwhile. You are all extremely valued and we
wouldn’t have such a great service without you all!!

Martin Hadfield - Head of Service

The Sexual Trauma division is excited to open our new CSE Home in May 2018. Rosa House will be led by
Carla in the interim with support from Austen House, Lincoln Hose and Meadow bank House.

Moving into the summer we will be sourcing and opening another CSE Home in line with C4C’s Top 10
Objectives!

Top priorities during 2018

• Open two new homes within the Sexual Trauma Division enabling Care 4 Children to support more young people
• To develop the skills and knowledge of our staff groups

Residential Update…

Forensic Services

It has been a busy period for Ofsted who have visited Meadow bank, Stalmine and Endeavour since our last newsletter. A big thank you to all the
staff and young people involved in these inspections which resulted in positive outcomes for all. Well done to Jane and her team at Stalmine, whose
interim inspection saw them achieve ‘Improved Effectiveness’ on their ‘Good’ rating.

A special mention to Danielle and her team at Meadow bank for achieving a ‘Good’ on their first ever inspection!

As Ofsted recently changed their policy on Motor homes, we say goodbye to Drake House and Andy Vint who has worked hard to manage the Crisis
service and handover to Jaimie Bell who will lead Endeavour House and the team at Maple.

You should shortly be seeing some publicity about our CHILDRENS COUNCIL to which we have had several nominations already, more are welcome.
We aim to have the Council functioning by June 2018 – watch this space!

Finally, I want to mention our young people who have successfully completed phases of the W4L programme, the young men
achieving junior instructor status with school and many others doing really well with their own personal goals. This has only been
made possible through the continued support & commitment from our staff team. THANK YOU!

Dominic Tumelty, Head of Service

The Forensic service is excited to open 3 new homes this year! Ribbleton House is due to open in May 2018
and will be led by Shelly Daly. As Shelly moves over from Fortitude House, Jeremy Farrar will take on
management duties for both Mill and Fortitude, supported by a new deputy structure.

We’re also expanding our GRIP service! Two new homes to replicate our Hope House offering are due to
open 2018 so keep your eye out for further details soon.

Top priorities during 2018
• Open 3 new homes in the Forensic service during 2018
• Achieve and maintain an Ofsted ‘Good’ rating on all of our homes

Fostering Update…

Carer Training
Joyce and Louisa have been delivering the majority of training courses with high attendance and positive feedback. A
new course called Trans-Gender Identity was also delivered by our clinical lead. This was aimed at raising awareness
for carers and encouraged interesting discussions.

New Carers
We have approved 6 new fostering families to our team and continue to seek individuals/households interested in
becoming foster carers.

Know someone interested in Fostering? Pass our number to them and a get referral fee once they start at C4C!

Step Down Fostering
We continue to work closely with all our residential, education and clinical colleagues to further build our Step Down
Fostering from our internal residential provisions. We are delighted that another child from Austen House
transitioned in February 2018 and is doing well.

Future Fostering Family and Team Event
We have organised a day out at Chester Zoo on Friday 13th April 2018. In total 36 adults and 63 children will be
attending and we’re sure they will enjoy spending time together.

Ofsted Annual Fostering Data Set
Fostering annual data set time is fast approaching. Joyce and Louisa were involved in an Ofsted Webinar Conference which outlined the changes in
the collection process. From 2018 this will be collected via Ofsted Data Base. Ofsted will be able to analyse the data across all organisations thus
offering a more detailed analysis on a national and regional basis.

This year there are some changes to the information collected-changes to recordings of missing from care; changes to data related to unplanned
placement endings; no data collection on education. The finalised version of data reports are being processed with final submission 30th June 18.

7

Clinical Update…

The clinical team is recruiting for our new homes in Preston and Burnley. Interviews happened before Easter with a number of
exceptional candidates we hope will join the clinical team over the next six months.

The Clinical team is looking forward to developing a digitised version of the Wellbeing for Life programme , an e-format of the manual
including the Exceptional Experiences Manual and making the clinical tracker more streamlined.

We have now appointed a partner to develop our
Clinical app and Tracker, as well as support us in
digitising our clinical manuals.

We are really excited about working with Citrus
Suite and look forward to giving you updates on
the app development in future newsletters.

We will be arranging focus groups, which we hope
will include our young people and staff to work on
the development of the app. Speak to Gerrilyn to

Education Update…

Trax - Preston

February was a great month for the Academy as our students were involved in collecting 3
new additions to our vocational educational mechanical fleet.

We have purchased 3 motorcycles. Two new training bikes have taken pride of place in
replacing the now retired workhorses and one bike which is looking at home in the workshop
alongside the other trials bikes.

Our students have been excited and very respectful riding the new additions and vocal in
sharing their appreciation of the opportunity to ride brand new motorcycles.

Learner Review Day

A number of weeks ago a learner review day took place showcasing the achievements of the young people within our residential homes. Below
are some of the photos of the last 3 months showing the great work our young people achieve with the support from our employees.

April and May Training Courses…

We have invested in a comprehensive training programme, Diploma’s, Management Development Programme and Specialist Skills
learning opportunities and I have been disappointed to see that some staff are not taking up these valuable opportunities. This has a
direct impact on the quality of care we are able to offer our young people, and the career progression opportunities available, I would
strongly urge everyone to look at their own development and try to book on any courses that are relevant to you over the remainder of
the year via your line manager.

Employee engagement – Staff survey…

In February we sent out our first C4C Staff Survey and we were absolutely delighted that 125 of our
employees took their time to complete the questionnaire and provide us with valuable feedback.

The purpose of this is to allow us to prioritise key actions in line with our Top 10 Objectives.
However, we are keen to continue with the full engagement of our workforce. Working groups will
be set up in the very near future to progress necessary improvements. We’ll be looking for
nominations from every work location to attend. Watch this space!!

A sneak preview/headline of the results:

100% of staff who completed the survey said that they were:

• Aware of our vision and values
• Committed to working with children and young people
• Believe we can improve the lives of the children we care for by supporting them to achieve positive outcomes
• Know who to speak to if they have safeguarding concerns
• Keen to learn new things to enhance their work performance

Our aim is to work on the areas that have been highlighted by our staff as needing improvements
i.e. communication and consultation methods, to enable every employee to maximise their
contributions by utilising and enhancing their skills set and also putting in place both formal and
informal processes for recognising and rewarding these efforts.

Thank you for your continued support with this ongoing project. I would like to take the opportunity to enforce that we are not an
organisation that simply pays lip service to employee engagement and our plan is not to merely run annual surveys to gain your
feedback. This is an ongoing process that involves everyone within C4C. Regardless of your role, your experiences, thoughts, feelings
and suggestions are really important to us. Our staff are our biggest and most valuable asset and we want you to have a long and happy
career with us, whilst creating a positive environment for both yourselves and our children to enable you all to reach your full potential.

Nina Savage, HR Director.

Pay and Pensions…

Pay rates & Sleep in allowances

We are pleased to announce, that from 16th March 2018 Sleep-in rates for all Residential Care Staff will increase to £40 and basic hourly
rates will also increase to £8.50. These changes will be automatically applied and will be reflected in your April wage slips. Should you
have any questions in relation to this, please contact your Line Manager. In response to comments received through the staff survey and
in order to remain competitive and recognise the contributions made by our workforce, we are currently undertaking a pay scale review.
The outcome of which will be communicated to you all in the near future.

Pensions – contribution increase

As you will be aware, at Care 4 Children we operate a workplace pension scheme to help you save for your retirement. This is run for us
by The Peoples Pension.
Recently, all staff were sent a letter outlining the legal requirement for contributions to be increased for both employees and employers
and what this means for you. This change will take effect from 6th April 2018 where you will benefit from a contribution top up from Care
4 Children – think of it as ‘free’ money and a great way to add to your retirement savings.
Should you wish to increase your own contributions further, you can arrange this through your online account with them, which will have
been set up on your commencement of employment with us. Should you have any questions you can visit their website which contains
lots of advice and guidance on what can be, quite a daunting topic. https://thepeoplespension.co.uk/
Happy saving to you all!

Beyond Expectations…

Our strap line, as displayed on all of our marketing material, is Beyond Expectations and we are
always looking to strive to achieve this in everything we do. We are aware that on a daily basis
our staff go over and above what is required of them in order to ensure the best outcomes for
the children we care for. This is to be said of staff who work directly in our residential care
settings and also those who are office based providing supportive services.

To show our appreciation of staff who go the extra mile, we are introducing an informal
recognition scheme called Star Awards. We are asking you to nominate your colleagues for
these certificates and to enter them into a prize draw to win £50, if you have witnessed them
going beyond expectations.
