NYYS Profiles - Get to know the NYYS family

Emma Toh, 17, piano - Chamber , seasons 49, 50, 51, 52

“I’ve played the piano since I was 3 and I joined the NYYS chamber music program when I
was 13. Walking into orientation, I expected to meet the other two members of my piano
trio and our coach. Instead, I found myself in a sea of chamber musicians rhythmically
thundering through Steve Reich’s Clapping Music. These brass, woodwind, and string
players all had their own chamber groups but at that moment we were communicating,
listening, and playing as one. I have had so many opportunities to learn from inspiring
teachers and perform in amazing places; but I am even more grateful for the fellow
musicians I have been able to meet and play with every year since my first orientation.”

Caitlin Lynch, Music Coach, Chamber

“Coaching for the Chamber Music Program has been an extraordinarily magical

experience for me. First, I find every interaction with the students inspiring on so many
levels – their commitment to the music and to each other, their willingness to approach
every idea with openness, and the pure joy and passion they bring to every step of the
process. I leave every coaching revitalized and excited by their remarkable music-making
and tangible growth. Second, I feel incredibly grateful to work for an organization that
is so genuinely committed to doing what is best for the students. My husband Tim and
I feel so fortunate to have found a professional home together in the warmth and vitality
of the New York Youth Symphony!”

Tim Mauthe, Assistant Director, Composition

“When last year’s curriculum for the Composition Program was finalized, I had to re-
read the schedule multiple times because I was so amazed by all of the opportunities
our composers were going to have. Before moving to New York with my wife, Caitlin,
I knew the NYYS by reputation as being a leading proponent of contemporary music.
However, I was not fully aware of the enormous extent to which the program gives its
students a comprehensive musical experience, education, and valuable opportunities. It
is a tremendous joy to be part of a team that brought together all the NYYS programs
with a unified goal of giving our students the best education possible. Working with
Kyle Blaha and our students this past year has been an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Kickoff Retreat Announced! Sept 18-20
