MESSAGE FROM VENTURA COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR

ROB VAN NIEUWBURG

On behalf of the board, thank you for partnering with us
to help make Ventura College students’ dreams a reality.
The Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support to
the students and programs of Ventura College. This would
not be possible without you.
With your invaluable support, the VC Foundation awarded
over half a million dollars in scholarships to over 250
deserving students this academic year. In addition, the
Foundation gave more than $30,000 in textbook support
to assist students with the cost of educational materials
and nearly $500,000 in program and capital support to
Ventura College.
The Ventura College Promise continues to be a huge
success and attracts attention across the nation. Since the
program’s inception in 2006, the Foundation has funded
over 12,000 students’ first year at VC. The impact has
been tremendous. Promise recipients are 70% more likely
to earn an Associate’s degree or certificate. Latino Promise
recipients are twice as likely to earn an Associate’s degree
and African American Promise recipients are 3.5 times
more likely to earn an Associate’s degree.
We have re-launched this publication as the “Gratitude
Report,” in honor of you – the individuals and organizations
that make our mission possible and help Ventura College
students achieve their dreams every day. Thank you for
continuing to partner with us and investing in the future of
our community.
Thank you,

Rob van Nieuwburg

HIGHER EDUCATION BECOMES
A REALITY FOR FIRST GENERATION
IMMIGRANT VALENTINA URIBE

Since she was five, Valentina wanted to be a doctor, and witnessing her
mother battle cancer only solidified that goal. “Seeing my mother lose
all her hair, and on what could have been her death bed, I decided with
the tears running down my face that I will become a great doctor to help
others, and most importantly my family.”
Originally from Colombia, Valentina never thought she could afford
higher education. Medical bills and other financial obligations made the
family budget tight, so she worked a part-time job to save for college but
doubted that she would ever have enough to cover the expense. “That was
a very harsh reality that made me doubt my chances of going to college
and pursuing a degree in Biology and eventually earning my doctorate in
medicine,” she said; so she reached out to the Ventura College Foundation.
“Thanks to the Foundation’s programs, I was able to afford paying for
my three years at Ventura College and have some extra money for helping
my family. [With the Promise,] I was able to go to college right after high
school, instead of having to take time off to save money for my future.”

COLLEGE PROMISE PROGRAM HAS HELPED MORE THAN

12,000 STUDENTS SINCE ITS CREATION IN 2006.

Valentina also accessed the lending library for her textbooks and received
three scholarships that helped her pay for tuition, textbooks that weren’t
available at the lending library, supplies, access codes to online educational
material and more. Currently, Valentina works at a local health clinic where
she has been promoted to analyze data and perform research related to
diabetes.

Valentina looks forward to attending a four-year university, the next step
toward becoming a doctor. “Thanks to the support of my family, the
Foundation, donors, Ventura College affiliated organizations, staff, faculty
and many others. You help students like me, in need of support and aid, to
continue our journeys and achieve our goals.”

“In the end I hope to achieve a lot so I may do well in this world. I hope to
help as many people as I can with a capable, humble, and loving heart while
also providing health, happiness, and love to this world that needs it.”

SPOTLIGHT

TEERSA
KRAMER

TEERSA KRAMER: FROM MOTHER,
TO STUDENT, TO NASA INTERN, TO
CHEMICAL ENGINEER

T eersa Kramer’s interest in science, the environment, and medicine
started at a very young age. She had a love for all animals and the
ocean. Her parents were circus performers and had no experience
with, or desire to attend college. Following in their footsteps, Teersa
decided not to pursue higher education after high school.
After a fifteen-year break home-schooling her son Race, who is now
studying engineering at Ventura College, Teersa was ready to pursue her
dreams with focus and passion. Race began taking classes at VC at just
13 years old and inspired her to enroll as well. With a debilitating illness
that causes her to have chronic pain and incapacitating fatigue, Teersa
was unsure how she would successfully manage school. She admits that
the illness made the journey difficult, but her perseverance, dedication,
and support from her family and scholarship donors has led her to
opportunities she never believed possible.
Teersa’s hard work paid off. She earned an internship with the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the Environmental
Engineering department. In the spring of 2015, she performed field
work and data analysis at NASA John C. Stennis Space Center’s 55-acre
waste disposal site and landfill.

VCF | COMMUNITY REPORT 2015/2016 11

“I OWE MY SUCCESS TO MY SUPPORT SYSTEM; MY FAMILY,
AND THE GENEROUS DONORS WHO INVEST IN MY EDUCATION.
WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE DONORS, THE GOALS I
HAVE SET FOR MYSELF WOULD NOT BE ATTAINABLE, DUE
TO THE HIGH COST OF EDUCATION. THE SUPPORT HAS BEEN
PSYCHOLOGICALLY SUPPORTIVE AS WELL. KNOWING THAT
SOMEONE BELIEVES IN MY DREAMS HAS TRULY EMPOWERED ME.”

As an intern at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in the spring of 2016, Teersa participated
in a chemical engineering internship and was tasked with designing an oxygen recovery system
for the Space Launch System rocket that will launch to Mars.

Her experiences allowed her to shadow some of the world’s top scientists and engineers and
participate in numerous engineering projects, such as: Lockheed Martin’s Orion Space Launch
System (SLS) (America’s new heavy-lift launch vehicle) and the Environmental Protection
Agency’s Gulf of Mexico Program.

“My experience at NASA has been life changing.”

Currently, Teersa is a chemical engineering intern at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Naval
Base Port Hueneme (NSWC PHD) where she supports the environmental program by managing
the overall environmental compliance of all NSWC PHD operations.

Teersa smoothly juggles her internship while completing necessary courses at Ventura College for
transfer into the Chemical Engineering Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
She also manages a plant share project in Ventura that serves to help educate people about the
concept of drought tolerant landscaping.

Once Teersa graduates, she plans to pursue a career with NASA or the Department of Defense.

MEETING THE NEED THE TSHING FAMILY:

NOURISHING STUDENTS’

BODIES AND MINDS

Generations of hungry Ventura College Foundation
Marketplace shoppers and Ventura College students
satisfy their cravings for menudo and asada from “Mama”
and “Papa” Tshing. Loretta Lin Tshing (Mama) and Kam Tong
Tshing (Papa) were the third vendors to join the Ventura College
Foundation Marketplace in 1985, which now has up to 600
vendors each weekend. Today, the Tshing family business, L&T
Catering, has a home on campus during the week offering Ventura
College students freshly made food in between classes.

In honor of his parents’ long-standing relationship with Ventura
College, Peter Tshing established the Papa Kam Tong Scholarship
to benefit business students, as well as the Mama Lin Tshing
Scholarship to benefit Hispanic single mothers who have
demonstrated academic excellence. Peter explains that these are
the hard working students they serve every day, and his family
wants to help them achieve their dreams. Peter recently committed
additional support to the VC Promise program.

Loretta and Kam emigrated from Hong Kong in the 1970’s.
Honoring their native cuisine, Papa cooks Chinese food, and
Mama, who studied Mexican cooking to appeal to the customers
at the Marketplace, specializes in menudo and asada.

The Tshings live and breathe their business and have no desire to
slow down. The family works seven days a week. Peter works a
full day, closes up shop, does clean up and paperwork, is in bed by
9 p.m. and is back up at 2 a.m. to prepare for the next day– just as
his parents have done for decades.

Peter expresses, “We are committed to this campus and this
community. We want to see these students succeed. It means a lot
to my family and we hope to make a difference for someone in
need.”

S CH OL AR SH IP S: H ONOR I NG T H E PA S T, B U IL DING T H E F U T U R E CRYSTAL CARDIEL’S CALLING:

TO SERVE THE UNDERSERVED

At age seven, Crystal Cardiel attended a union protest with her father and was so moved
by the experience that she decided on a political career so she can make a difference
in a community. This passion continued to develop in her middle school years as she
debated with her parents and family about topics in the news. As she grew closer to college
age, her parents worried about how they would afford Crystal’s admirable yet costly dream to
pursue political science. When Crystal learned of the VC Promise and the Textbook Lending
Library, she knew they would be ecstatic.

With these resources, Crystal was able to pursue classes in political science and Chicano
studies. “Taking International Relations and Comparative Government at Ventura College
really made me feel passionate about politics and government outside of the U.S. and sparked
my interest to work either for the United Nations or for a non-profit organization to help
underdeveloped countries meet basic needs for their people.”

In her second year, Crystal received four scholarships including the Professor Ismael “Mayo”
de la Rocha Scholarship. “When we got news about the scholarships, my parents were so
proud, they were nearly bouncing off the walls with joy!”

Crystal now attends the college of her dreams, UCLA, preparing to pursue her calling to serve
underdeveloped nations. “Professor de la Rocha was such an inspiration to so many people in
the community. I feel proud to have received this scholarship in his name, and I hope to make
him and his family proud.”

SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF

MAYO DE LA ROCHA BUILDS A

PLATFORM FOR CHANGE

I smael (Mayo) de la Rocha was born in Mexico and grew up in East Los
Angeles. The son of a bracero worker and seamstress, he understood the value
of education, but while attending UC Santa Barbara, Mayo struggled to keep
up. With perseverance and inspiration, Mayo graduated and became a professor at
Ventura College, giving support and guidance to students who needed a little extra
push.

Mayo taught history and Chicano studies at Ventura College for nearly 40 years
prior to his passing in August 2015. Mayo was not just a mentor to students, but
also to his colleagues and the community.

“He encouraged a lot of us who were going back to grad school,” fellow history
professor Michael Ward said. “He was such a positive force in all of our lives,
helping us realize our dreams.”

To honor his commitment to Ventura College and the local community, friends and
family of Mayo de la Rocha established an endowed scholarship in his memory to
be awarded in perpetuity. Crystal Cardiel is the first recipient of the Professor Ismael
“Mayo” de la Rocha Scholarship.

GIBBS TRUCK CENTERS

GETS STUDENTS’ CAREERS MOVING

W orking together, public and private entities can accomplish far more in
partnership than they can individually. The Gibbs Truck Centers team
understands that partnerships create new educational and economic
opportunities for our local students, which undoubtedly enhance economic life for
everyone in the region.

Gibbs Truck Centers, a full service truck dealership with six locations throughout central
California, has committed nearly $1 million in cash and in-kind support to establish
the Diesel Mechanics Program at Ventura College. The program’s first students started
classes in August 2016.

The Gibbs Truck Centers team provides critical expertise and experience, such as hands-
on training, logistical support, internships and job placement. Two of the company’s
service bays have become lab instruction facilities for the Ventura College program.

Ed Gibbs, Sr., president, has operated the company for 47 years and his son, Ed Gibbs,
has been its general manager since 2005. They both say, “Educated workers with
technical expertise as well as problem solving and ‘soft’ skills are now required for most
diesel repair facilities.”

The Diesel Mechanics Program provides hands-on, work-based training experience and
the classroom curriculum required for careers in diesel electronics and diagnostics and
in diesel engines and repair. The program will be NATEF approved, which is the premier
industry quality standard. Students can elect to pursue either a certificate of achievement
and/or an Associate of Science degree in diesel mechanics.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities in the diesel mechanics
field are expected to grow nine percent from 2012-2022 with annual starting salaries
ranging from $40,000 to $50,000.

The Foundation is proud to partner with businesses in the community to enable wider
access to varied programs for students and to forward the college’s goal of workforce
development.

PHOENIX SCHOLARSHIP DESPITE ADVERSITY, RENEE DIXON

IS ON THE PATH TO SUCCEED

I t was an emotional journey filled with personal tragedy that led Renee Dixon to her
life’s calling. Graduating from Buena High School in 2004, Renee had no plans to go to
college and instead enlisted in the Army, hoping to one day become a police officer.

Renee was stationed in Germany and three months later, deployed to Afghanistan. She
worked in an infantry unit that conducted convoy operations. When an attack or trauma
occurred, Renee’s unit would be the first to respond to provide assistance and protection to
injured troops until medical help arrived.

After returning from Afghanistan, Renee was transferred to an airborne unit in Georgia.
During training she suffered fractures in her hip and femur. As a result, Renee was reassigned
to a less strenuous position as a drug investigator for the Criminal Investigation Division.
After three years in the position, she felt she had found her passion. However, the pain from
her injury made it difficult to perform her investigative duties.

Adding to her difficulties was news that her father had been diagnosed with stage four
cancer. For months, Renee traveled from Georgia to California to be with her father for his
chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and through his hospitalization until his passing.

Throughout this ordeal, Renee was inspired by the nurses tending to her father’s care and
the difference they made in the quality of his life, and committed herself to becoming a
nurse.

VCF | COMMUNITY REPORT 2015/2016 19

THE PHOENIX SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1999

BY THE VENTURA COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN

RESPONSE TO THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF RE-ENTRY STUDENTS AT VC.

PHOENIX SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ARE RETURNING TO SCHOOL

AFTER A BREAK IN EDUCATION DUE TO DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES.

To pursue her dreams while supporting herself and her mother, Renee worked several part-
time jobs throughout the entire Nursing Program at Ventura College. Her busy schedule
didn’t affect her success – Renee was inducted into the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor
Society and served on the curriculum committee.

Next, Renee enrolled in the California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI) Nursing
Program. She was excited, but worried about the expense. The remainder of her GI Bill
would only cover her first semester at CSUCI. It seemed Renee’s dreams were just out of
reach.

She then learned about the scholarship program at Ventura College. Renee applied and
was awarded the Stan Weisel Phoenix Scholarship, which would cover her last semester at
CSUCI.

In June 2016, Renee became a Registered Nurse. She plans to receive a bachelor’s degree
from CSUCI in August 2017 and become a flight nurse on a helicopter to assist in emergency
situations. Renee hopes to offer the care and support people need during a traumatic time,
just as her father received.

“Everyone goes through hardships. Everything I went through made me who I am today
and led me to pursue this dream. Donors make more of an impact than they know... this
scholarship will allow me to finish what I started and reach my goals.”

GEORGE MCNEELY LEGACY SOCIETY LEGACY DONOR AURORA LOSS

HELPS THE FUTURE WITH A NOD

TO THE PAST

T hough few people would argue the impact nurses have in helping us heal or stay
healthy, chances are most people don’t think about where they’d be without a nurse
nearby. That’s not the case for Aurora Loss. For well over a decade, she has returned
a long-ago kindness by donating to the Ventura College Nursing Program. Aurora has
pledged to leave a lasting legacy of financial support in her will as well.

Decades ago, as a young single professional in Washington D.C., Aurora became ill
and needed to be hospitalized. It was an era when women had difficulty advocating for
themselves. When the doctors brushed away her symptoms, she was shown support and
kindness by a nurse. To this day, Aurora believes the nurse’s efforts on her behalf helped
save her life.

Now Aurora helps students who are struggling financially. She helps them achieve their
goals of a rewarding career as a nurse by lessening their financial burden. In doing so, the
98-year-old Ventura resident is helping the future by honoring the past. Aurora helps to
ensure there is a workforce of qualified nurses in our community.

For over 50 years, the Ventura College Nursing Program has been vital to our community
by delivering graduates who serve in every one of Ventura County’s four major hospitals
and treat patients at medical offices and homes.

The program meets the highest standards in nursing education, having obtained the national
Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) designation, the top honor a
program can receive, whether it’s a an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree program.

When students graduate with an associate degree in nursing (RN), they have a great career
and a solid livelihood.

Aurora’s generosity of spirit will ensure that generations ahead will receive quality care and
caring from Ventura College’s nursing program graduates. And for that, each and every one
involved in the Ventura College nursing program—from students to staff—is grateful.
