Concept Note Story Telling SEAQIL

Concept Note Story Telling SEAQIL

BUILDING ASEAN COMMUNITY THROUGH
STORY TELLING COMPETITION:
LISTENING TO ASIA

Call for Submissions

1. BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE

Culture is made up of all ideas, beliefs, values, knowledge, language and way of life a group
of people shares. Culture is expressed through such things as foods, celebrations, music, art,
laws, customs, rituals, and language. Culture is not taught, but people learn the culture by
living it. People decide what is right or wrong and respectful or disrespectful based on beliefs
or values in their culture.

Southeast Asia is a region which is very rich of cultures. Every country in this region has their
own unique cultures. Though geographically lies in the same region, cultures across Southeast
Asia may or may not share the same ideas, beliefs, values, or knowledge. Thus,
misunderstanding may take place when people across Southeast Asia interact one another. One
respectful way to better understand valuable wisdom, beliefs, or knowledge of people in the
region is by listening to their moral stories, such as folk stories, legends, fables, heroic stories
beyond great heroes or leaders and the like. By listening and comprehending the hidden values
beyond those great stories across Southeast Asia, it is expected that cultural barriers may break
down and hence ASEAN community becomes stronger.

In this regard, as a Centre focuses on language education, SEAMEO QITEP in Language initiates
a program to build a better cultural understanding across the region through language by
conducting a story telling competition called “LISTENING TO ASIA”.

2. PURPOSE

This storytelling competition aims to enable students to improve competencies required to
adapt the 21st century. It will enrich knowledge and to better understand Southeast Asia
culture among Southeast Asia students since this program will enable students to increase
their critical thinking as they have to select high value stories representing their own culture;
to enhance their creativity and their communicative competence as they have to tell the
selected story fluently and artfully; to improve their ability to collaborate as they have to
work in group (with another student) to plan their performance while telling the story. In

addition, this competition challenges teachers to supervise their students to conduct the

by the students critically; the storytelling performance initiates creativity; and the group of
students collaborate well and communicatively during the whole process.
