What is Chess?

 A board game of strategic
skill for two players,
played on a chequered
board on which each
playing piece is moved
according to precise rules.

 The object is to put the
opponent's king under a
direct attack from which
escape is impossible
(checkmate).

Who invented Chess?

 The brahmin Sissa ibn Dahir (also called Sessa or Sissa
Sassa) is a mythical character from India.

 Sissa invents chess for an Indian king for
educational purposes. In gratitude, the King asks
Sissa how he wants to be rewarded. Sissa wishes
to receive an amount of grain which is the sum
of one grain on the first square of the chess
board, and which is then doubled on every
following square.

 This request is now known as the Wheat and
Chessboard Problem, and forms the basis of
various mathematical and philosophical questions

Which country did Chess
originated?

 The country that originated chess
is India dated back in the sixth
century.

 This predecessor, called
chaturanga or catur was played on
a 8x8 grid and featured pieces
generally similiar to those of
modern chess.

Wilhelm Steinitz Who is known as father

of chess?

 Steinitz isolated a number of significant positional
features and discovered that brilliant attacks are
often succesful only because of very weak defence.
After sharply raising the art of defence, he, in the
words of Euwe, 'cast doubts on the widely-
accepted, thanks to the victories of Morphy and
Anderssen, axiom about the need to attack!' And
instead of this, he put forward the concept of the
well-founded attack , resulting from the
continuous accumulation of small advandtages.

 His teaching became a turning point in chess
history: it was from Steiniz that the era of
modern chess began. The contribution of the first
world champion to its development is comparable
with the great scientific discoveries of the 19th
century.
