Countryside High School Football Supporters,
Thank you for joining us this evening and each football evening for the 2020-2021 edition of Countryside High School Cougars football. Our administration is very proud of Head Football Coach Eric Schmitz and his talented staff, our amazing student athletes, and our outstanding parents that have all done so much to make this season possible. Our football program has worked very hard to prepare for an outstanding schedule that includes many in-county rivals and great competition. We appreciate you cheering us on this evening!
Selflessness and responsibility are two of the main pillars of our team and these qualities can be seen on the field and on our campus. We are proud Cougars and we thank our entire football program for representing our school so well. As a school, we are very pleased that our football program has found a way to remain active, healthy, and strategic as we navigate through this school year. The pride our student athletes bring to each and every game is evident in their play. The program remaining safe during these times is a strong testament to the dedication of our coaches, athletic training staff, and student athletes. Our student athletes demonstrate good sportsmanship on the field and are dedicated to performing in the classroom. These expectations, cemented by Coach Schmitz and his staff, make a great difference in how our student athletes represent our school community.
We would also be remiss without thanking our Golden Cougar Marching Band and Band Director Vincent Parrulli, who do an outstanding job of building excitement and making a difference at each game, our cheerleaders and Head Coach Alison Anderson and the energy they bring to our stands, and our Gold Gang student cheer squad who help keep the student body engaged in the competition. We are very fortunate to have such a great community, all working for a common goal. Please do all you can throughout this game to cheer on our student athletes, band, and cheerleaders as their dedication to our school is enormous.
Please feel to reach out to Assistant Principal for Athletics, Erin Overall, at [email protected] to share any positive observations or questions about our storied program. Thank you again for your time in being here to support Countryside High School athletics and we hope you have a great evening.
Go Cougars! Sincerely,
Taylor K. Henderson, Sr. Principal

EricSchmitz • hEad coach
Former offensive center from Mercyhurst College. Schmitz was named to Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Preseason All-American team in 2001. He was a 4 year starter in college, starting at guard for year, and the final three years at center. Following his playing career, Coach Schmitz had a stint coaching tight ends for a spring at his alma mater before moving on to Franklin College for 3 seasons. He was Franklin’s running backs coach his first year, offensive line coach his final two years, and offensive coordinator
his last year. In addition to his on-field coaching duties, Coach Schmitz also served as the strength and conditioning coordinator. In his first year as offensive coordinator, he transformed Franklin’s offense into one of the nation’s best units. The Grizzlies led the Heartland Conference Athletic Conference (HCAC)
in scoring (33.8) and total offense (398.3) per game. The offensive unit also ranked second in passing of- fense (269.6), passing efficiency (125.2), first downs (210), and red zone scoring offense (73.9). Nationally, the Grizzlies ranked 21st in Division III in passing offense and 32nd in scoring. Schmitz also tutored six All-HCAC offensive players, including four first-team selections. From there, Schmitz moved on to Divi- sion II Gannon University for 2 seasons. In addition to his duties as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Schmitz also served as the strength and conditioning coordinator, and recruiting coordinator. In two years, he was able to coach 6 players who earned All-GLIAC honors on offense, and another 2 players who played arena ball following college. In two years coaching against his alma mater, Schmitz finished with a 1-1 record. The highlight came his first year when Golden Knights were victorious over the Lakers to win the Niagara Cup in front of a sold out crowd at Gannon Stadium. He has also coached 2 years of varsity football for Tarpon Springs and East Lake, and 1 year of JV football for Tarpon Springs. This will be Schmitz’s 9th year coaching varsity football at Countryside. He spent his first 4 years at Countryside as the Cougars Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach before becoming head coach in 2014.
